or the person who I work with or go to college with, 00:00:33.340 --> 00:00:40.079 what can I do so that they too can become a follower of Jesus Christ? 00:00:41.920 --> 00:00:46.320 Well, the simple answer is found in Acts chapter 8. 00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:56.939 The story of the Ethiopian who hears the good news about Jesus from Philip and becomes a Christian. 00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:03.320 So let's look at this story as we seek to answer the question, how do people become Christians? 00:01:03.579 --> 00:01:06.060 The first part of the answer is this. 00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:09.099 God's gospel plan. 00:01:10.379 --> 00:01:13.840 And we see this worked out in three simple ways. 00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:17.520 First, we see his plan worked out in the world. 00:01:18.180 --> 00:01:24.340 The beginning of Acts, no need to look it up, makes it very clear what God's plan is. 00:01:24.980 --> 00:01:29.760 In Acts chapter 1 and verse 8, it says this. 00:01:30.820 --> 00:01:33.500 Jesus is speaking to his disciples. 00:01:33.680 --> 00:01:34.040 He says, 00:01:34.040 --> 00:02:01.400 God's intention was that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, the promise of salvation would be announced to all people. 00:02:01.400 --> 00:02:12.080 So God is making it very clear at the very beginning that his gospel doesn't belong to one particular culture or one particular race or people, 00:02:12.360 --> 00:02:16.879 but it's for everyone everywhere in the world. 00:02:18.719 --> 00:02:21.939 So how did people get to here? 00:02:22.620 --> 00:02:24.400 Well, go back to chapter 8. 00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:26.939 Chapter 8 and verse 1. 00:02:26.939 --> 00:02:30.300 Look at what we read there at the beginning of chapter 8. 00:02:31.219 --> 00:02:39.199 It tells us there that a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem. 00:02:39.699 --> 00:02:42.759 And all except the apostles were scattered. 00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:43.719 Where? 00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:47.699 Throughout Judea and Samaria. 00:02:47.699 --> 00:02:58.280 All of a sudden, families who had trusted in Jesus Christ and who were part of the church in the city of Jerusalem 00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:02.519 had to move to other places for fear of their lives. 00:03:02.599 --> 00:03:03.759 They had to escape. 00:03:05.199 --> 00:03:08.739 And what did they do when they moved to other places? 00:03:09.099 --> 00:03:10.199 Well, look at verse 4. 00:03:10.199 --> 00:03:17.839 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 00:03:18.199 --> 00:03:20.619 And we're told they went into Judea and Samaria. 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:23.379 Just as God had said. 00:03:23.619 --> 00:03:25.000 This was no accident. 00:03:25.179 --> 00:03:27.239 This was all part of God's working. 00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:36.060 His sovereign and great plan that the persecution would move people out to different places 00:03:36.060 --> 00:03:40.540 so that they could begin to share the good news with other people. 00:03:41.200 --> 00:03:42.840 So that's the first step. 00:03:42.939 --> 00:03:44.240 The second part is this. 00:03:45.320 --> 00:03:50.180 God's gospel plan in the witness is also worked out in Philip's life. 00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:56.000 Because Philip was in Jerusalem and now he's having to move out to another place. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:00.659 Look at verse 26 of Acts chapter 8. 00:04:02.020 --> 00:04:04.300 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:11.759 Go south to the road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. 00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:19.819 This is a road that goes southeast towards the coast from Jerusalem, about a 60 mile journey. 00:04:19.819 --> 00:04:25.819 As he started out on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch. 00:04:25.819 --> 00:04:30.959 An important official in charge of the treasury. 00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:41.120 So do you see how God is working in such a way that he brings Philip into contact with an unbeliever? 00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:43.560 So God's working in the world. 00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:49.160 He's working in Philip and he's working in the life of the unbeliever. 00:04:50.399 --> 00:04:55.100 Amazingly, God is doing that in this man from Ethiopia. 00:04:55.959 --> 00:05:01.639 This unbeliever, we've been told, has been up to Jerusalem to go to the temple. 00:05:01.639 --> 00:05:07.939 And now he's on his way home again and he's opened up his Bible to the Old Testament. 00:05:08.180 --> 00:05:11.560 Well, that's all they would have had then, the scriptures of Isaiah. 00:05:11.800 --> 00:05:13.439 And he's reading away. 00:05:14.939 --> 00:05:21.219 Now what would prompt a non-Jew to start reading the scriptures? 00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:25.899 Well, it seems God is at work in his life as well. 00:05:25.899 --> 00:05:27.599 This man is searching. 00:05:28.039 --> 00:05:29.319 He's not satisfied. 00:05:29.560 --> 00:05:31.319 What he has 00:05:47.579 Now Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian is really quite humorous. 00:05:47.839 --> 00:05:49.120 Look at verse 29. 00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:56.220 The spirit told Philip, go to that chariot and stay near it. 00:05:57.259 --> 00:06:01.720 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and he heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. 00:06:02.300 --> 00:06:04.740 Do you understand what you're --> 00:07:26.459 I don't think they were. 00:07:27.839 --> 00:07:35.399 And for us, it changes how we think about where we actually live, the house that we live in, the place that we work. 00:07:35.399 --> 00:07:43.079 And why I happen to be, perhaps, the only Christian in my family or in my college. 00:07:43.939 --> 00:07:47.379 At one level, we all choose the different places we live. 00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:48.879 We make decisions. 00:07:49.019 --> 00:07:53.339 We say, I'm going to go to that college and I'm going to do that course. 00:07:53.839 --> 00:07:56.179 Or I'm going to take that job. 00:07:56.180 --> 00:08:04.340 But at another level, God has planned out where we're going to live, where we're going to work, and what we're going to study. 00:08:05.759 --> 00:08:17.379 And if you are a Christian, God has placed you where you are because there are people just like the Ethiopian who doesn't know the good news about Jesus. 00:08:17.379 --> 00:08:25.879 And God has you there so that you can share and live your life amongst the people. 00:08:27.139 --> 00:08:29.600 So, how do people become Christians? 00:08:29.780 --> 00:08:32.700 Well, first, we've got to understand God's big plan. 00:08:33.340 --> 00:08:36.860 But second, his invitation. 00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:42.659 We're told a little bit about the Ethiopian in verse 27. 00:08:43.019 --> 00:08:45.180 Let's read verse 27 again. 00:08:45.180 --> 00:08:51.500 So, he started out, that's Philip, and on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch, 00:08:51.500 --> 00:09:00.240 an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:05.679 This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship. 00:09:05.679 --> 00:09:11.579 Now, in today's language, we might say that he was the finance minister. 00:09:12.179 --> 00:09:14.679 He's in charge of the treasury. 00:09:15.179 --> 00:09:19.279 He's the one who decides what taxes, what the budget is going to be. 00:09:19.279 --> 00:09:21.919 And he's a very important guy. 00:09:22.199 --> 00:09:28.259 So important, he's being chauffeur-driven in a first-century stretched limo. 00:09:29.079 --> 00:09:30.679 Except for it's a chariot. 00:09:30.679 --> 00:09:41.959 Now, we're told, verse 28, on his way home, he was sitting in his chariot, reading the book of Isaiah, the prophets. 00:09:41.960 --> 00:09:49.540 This unbeliever has travelled literally hundreds of miles all the way from Ethiopia, 00:09:49.740 --> 00:09:55.100 this great big vast kingdom of which the queen was in charge of, a very wealthy place, 00:09:55.139 --> 00:09:58.980 and he's travelled all the way up to Jerusalem to go and worship. 00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:07.240 Except when he arrives at the temple, he discovers sexually altered or castrated. 00:10:38.899 --> 00:10:46.379 Now, for us, that might seem quite odd and quite strange, but in a culture like that, it could be quite common. 00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:54.699 It was a sign, a way of showing that you were completely committed and loyal to the work and to the service that you were involved in. 00:10:54.700 --> 00:10:58.540 So this was a very like his journey all the way up from Ethiopia up to Jerusalem was a complete waste of time. 00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:37.860 And so he leaves disappointed, disillusioned. 00:11:38.259 --> 00:11:41.759 He came to meet God, to know something about God. 00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:43.539 But now he can't get in. 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:45.419 He's been barred. 00:11:45.419 --> 00:11:56.379 And somewhere on his was reading. 00:12:02.500 --> 00:12:03.659 Look at verse 32. 00:12:05.500 --> 00:12:11.759 The eunuch was reading this passage of scripture, which comes from Isaiah 53. 00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:15.679 He was led like sheep to the slaughter. 00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:21.139 And as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 00:12:21.480 --> 00:12:24.559 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. 00:12:25.100 --> 00:12:27.120 Who can speak of his descendants? 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:31.720 For his life was taken from the earth. 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:38.539 The eunuch asked this lamb who's going to be slain, and he's trying to figure out who is this sheep? 00:13:53.040 --> 00:13:54.020 Who's this lamb? 00:13:54.019 --> 00:13:58.079 Is it the prophet or was he speaking about somebody else? 00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:06.000 Well, look at what this passage has to say, because it is speaking about Jesus. 00:14:06.699 --> 00:14:07.579 Verse 5. 00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:10.919 He was pierced for our transgressions. 00:14:11.019 --> 00:14:13.019 He was crushed for our iniquities. 00:14:13.879 --> 00:14:17.220 The punishment that brought us peace was upon him. 00:14:17.539 chariot. 00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:14.240 It says there, 00:16:14.339 --> 00:16:18.799 By oppression and judgment he, that's Jesus, was taken away. 00:16:19.439 --> 00:16:22.479 And who can speak of his descendants? 00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:26.820 It's a bit of a puzzling question for him 00:16:26.820 --> 00:16:27.980 because he's saying, 00:16:28.139 --> 00:16:29.620 Well, if Jesus has died, 00:16:30.759 --> 00:16:32.840 who is going to be his family? 00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:35.039 Who is going to be his descendants? 00:16:35.259 --> 00:16:36.279 If Jesus is dead, 00:16:36.680 --> 00:16:38.360 what's his offspring going to be? 00:16:39.180 --> 00:16:41.720 Well, the answer comes for us in verse 10. 00:16:43.159 --> 00:16:45.720 It tells us there that it was the Lord's will 00:16:45.720 --> 00:16:49.060 to crush Jesus and to cause him to suffer. 00:16:49.059 --> 00:16:52.359 And though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, 00:16:52.859 --> 00:16:55.719 he will see 00:17:30.759 --> 00:17:32.339 instead of being excluded, 00:17:32.940 --> 00:17:35.759 not only can you be forgiven of all of your sin, 00:17:36.579 --> 00:17:40.759 but you too can be welcomed in to God's family. 00:17:40.759 --> 00:17:44.079 We don't know, 00:17:44.200 --> 00:17:46.940 but I wonder if he turned the page in his scroll, 00:17:47.440 --> 00:17:50.000 or rather unrolled it a little 00:18:14.940 excluded, 00:18:15.299 --> 00:18:16.440 but look what it says, 00:18:16.559 --> 00:18:18.180 Isaiah 56 verse 3. 00:18:18.180 --> 00:18:22.220 Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the
