00:04:29.699 --> 00:04:31.959 That's where you get the word martyr from. 00:04:32.039 --> 00:04:38.219 And when we think of martyr, we think of people who give up their lives out of believing in Jesus and proclaiming him. 00:04:38.339 --> 00:04:45.379 And so, what we're getting at here are these, this cloud of witnesses are those who bore witness to God to their last breath. 00:04:45.379 --> Testament saints will not be made perfect. 00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:15.559 Their salvation as ours was found in Christ alone. 00:06:15.779 --> 00:06:18.239 Theirs by faith in what Christ would do. 00:06:56.740 --> 00:06:59.500 A cloud of spectators. 00:07:00.040 --> 00:07:01.840 And they were cheering him on. 00:07:02.220 --> 00:07:05.439 And he ran that last 200 yards to the end. 00:07:05.540 --> 00:07:08.879 It was like a stadium filled with people rooting him on. 00:07:09.019 --> 00:07:17.620 In chapter 12, verse 1, the author is picturing our holding fast to Christ as a marathon. 00:07:17.620 --> 00:07:23.019 And we're being surrounded by those who've endured to the end. 00:07:23.639 --> 00:07:29.420 They've gone before us and they wait for us in the heavenly city of God. Have you ever filled out a government form where it asks for your ethnic heritage, whether you're Caucasian or you're black or you're Hispanic or you're Asian? 00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:31.060 Just 00:10:01.559 The New International Version of the Bible says, 00:10:01.819 --> 00:10:06.399 Let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles. 00:10:07.699 --> 00:10:09.960 Have you ever noticed a marathon runner what they wear? 00:10:11.960 --> 00:10:14.279 When they're running the race, they don't wear much. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:17.759 They usually wear like really short shorts. 00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:19.259 Who wears short shorts? 00:10:20.179 --> 00:10:21.460 And then they have a tank top. 00:10:22.139 --> 00:10:23.100 And that's all that they're wearing. 00:10:23.379 --> 00:10:27.340 On cold days, they usually put on a stocking hat and have gloves on, but that's it. 00:10:28.620 --> 00:10:31.159 They're running light. 00:10:32.439 --> 00:10:39.080 In fact, the Greco-Roman Olympics, which began in 776 BC, 00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:42.279 they wore no clothing at all. 00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:50.039 Which would boost the Olympic kind of viewership if they did that today. 00:10:51.879 --> 00:10:53.259 But the point is, 00:10:55.519 --> 00:10:56.819 competitors run light. 00:10:58.740 --> 00:11:03.439 They compete light to minimize hindrances to the running the race. 00:11:03.580 --> 00:11:07.679 They lay things aside that would distract them or hinder them. 00:11:07.679 --> 00:11:10.000 Think about it this way. 00:11:10.199 --> 00:11:14.939 If it is not helping you run the race for Jesus, 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:19.939 it's probably hindering you from running the race for Jesus. 00:11:20.599 --> 00:11:25.079 And the author points to two different types of hindrances in this passage. 00:11:25.080 --> 00:11:28.220 The first is every weight. 00:11:29.300 --> 00:11:33.980 Let us also lay aside every weight. 00:11:34.580 --> 00:11:39.420 A marathon runner may show up to the race in a full-blown body warm-up suit, 00:11:39.620 --> 00:11:44.379 but when it's race time, he or she will take off that warm-up suit and lay it aside 00:11:44.379 --> 00:11:47.220 because they want to run the race and run it strong. 00:11:47.220 --> 00:11:55.080 They don't want anything hindering them from running as strong and as best as they can run. 00:11:56.340 --> 00:12:01.680 There are things that aren't in and of themselves sinful 00:12:01.680 --> 00:12:06.120 that become hindrances to us running the race. 00:12:06.200 --> 00:12:07.120 Let me give you some examples. 00:12:07.120 --> 00:12:11.700 Would you say that sleep is bad or good? 00:12:12.500 --> 00:12:13.259 It's good. 00:12:14.860 --> 00:12:21.879 But if your sleep habits are resulting in your neglecting your pursuit of Christ, 00:12:22.919 --> 00:12:24.759 you've got a hindrance. 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:29.019 You've got to lay that aside. 00:12:29.159 --> 00:12:30.919 It's not helping you pursue Jesus. 00:12:31.100 --> 00:12:31.840 It's hindering you. 00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:37.820 It's keeping you from reading the Bible, from praying unto God. 00:12:39.220 -->
