atheists admitted that they prayed, quote unquote, sometimes. 00:01:04.039 --> 00:01:11.579 If this is true, then it is safe to say that prayer is something that is practiced with some sense of regularity 00:01:11.579 --> 00:01:17.859 by many people who we come into contact with day in and day out. 00:01:18.799 --> 00:01:25.579 Just think about how often and how acceptable it is to say and to hear the phrase, 00:01:26.599 --> 00:01:32.759 our thoughts and prayers go out to or offered to our thoughts and prayers. 00:01:33.180 --> 00:01:39.180 We hear this constantly in the media when something tragic happens in our nation. 00:01:39.180 --> 00:01:48.660 So many people pray, but we must understand that not all prayer is the same. 00:01:49.660 --> 00:01:59.680 Many pray to gods that are not gods at all, and it is very possible, even plausible, to pray to the right god wrongly. 00:02:00.780 --> 00:02:06.040 The scripture has much to say about prayers offered up in vain. 00:06:59.920 I think that is a fantastic definition of prayer. 00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:07.520 I hope this morning that you know your great need of God's presence and power in your life. 00:07:07.680 00:09:31.980 --> 00:09:36.100 The recitation of Scripture is always to be commended. 00:09:36.460 --> 00:09:41.080 It is a wonderful thing to have this prayer memorized and to be able to say it. 00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:47.740 But I do not believe that Jesus is trying to give us material for our corporate liturgy. 00:09:48.660 --> 00:09:54.980 He is instead modeling a pattern for us to pray by. 00:09:55.460 --> 00:09:59.040 He does not say, pray this. 00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:04.199 He says, pray then like this. 00:10:04.860 --> 00:10:11.719 That we would see the attitude and the intentions of the Lord's Prayer 00:10:11.719 --> 00:10:15.339 and therefore model our praying after it. 00:10:15.519 --> 00:10:19.019 We can become over-reductionary at this point. 00:10:19.439 --> 00:10:22.120 And some do this very thing where they would say, 00:10:22.219 --> 00:10:24.139 look, we're not supposed to heap up empty phrases. 00:10:24.139 --> 00:10:29.019 We're merely meant to say this thing that Jesus said. 00:10:29.439 --> 00:10:33.539 We have the example in the Scripture of Jesus spending all night in prayer. 00:10:33.879 --> 00:10:39.879 And I am confident that He did not repeat these verses over and over and over again. 00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:43.340 So pray then like this. 00:10:43.980 --> 00:10:48.100 That is a very important distinction for us to consider. 00:10:48.100 --> 00:11:38.899 Prayer that is acceptable to God begins with a positional reality that God is our Father. 00:11:38.899 --> 00:11:46.199 If you have been saved by Christ, then you have been adopted into the family of God. 00:11:46.439 --> 00:11:56.100 You have Jesus as your brother, God as your Father, and all the blessed access to Him that comes with your adoption. 00:11:57.240 --> 00:12:05.000 We have relational intimacy with the Creator of heaven and earth. 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:09.639 Paul wrote in Galatians chapter 4 and verse 6. 00:12:10.639 --> 00:12:13.100 Because you are sons. 00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:18.860 And ladies, I want to always remind you that it was appropriate for them to write in this way. 00:12:19.019 --> 00:12:20.720 Sons received all the inheritance. 00:12:20.919 --> 00:12:22.820 And you can think that's unfair of their day. 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:25.879 But they're trying to communicate something in your day. 00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:28.559 Ladies, this, and I quote, 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:17.279 With what confidence would anyone address God as Father? 00:13:18.279 --> 00:13:23.200 Who would break forth into such rashness as to claim for himself the honor of a son of God 00:13:23.200 --> 00:13:28.980 unless we had been adopted as children of grace in Christ? 00:13:30.139 --> 00:13:35.600 But because the narrowness of our hearts cannot
