Insecure people criticize others who see things differently from themselves. 00:04:08.620 --> 00:04:11.120 Insecure people tend to get into tribes. 00:04:11.900 --> 00:04:14.020 They find people that think similarly to themselves. 00:04:14.540 --> 00:04:20.079 And then they and their tribes criticize others who think differently as a way of boosting their own self-esteem 00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:23.099 and make themselves think good about themselves. 00:04:24.219 --> 00:04:27.180 Insecure people keep on telling themselves that they are right. 00:04:27.300 --> 00:04:28.279 They see the the things I would sometimes find myself doing is I would listen to sermons from other churches 00:04:39.699 --> 00:04:42.159 and then I would scoff at them. 00:04:43.099 --> 00:04:45.299 And I would privately think things like, 00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:47.860 Oh my goodness, they are not gospel-centered at all. 00:04:47.860 --> 00:04:50.340 That is not an expositional sermon. 00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:52.500 They didn't even get to Jesus. 00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:55.439 And all sorts of other ridiculous things. 00:04:55.980 --> 00:04:59.720 Now, it's one thing for someone to do that privately, one day I found myself talking to two people saying these very humble words. 00:05:35.819 --> 00:05:38.500 I listened to Pastor So-and-So sermon, 00:05:38.860 --> 00:05:41.319 and it was one of the worst sermons I've ever listened to. 00:05:43.800 --> 00:05:49.219 That coming from a 33-year-old self-congratulatory schmuck 00:05:49.219 --> 00:05:52.120 who didn't actually know anything at all. know why churches, there's fighting and there's disagreements? 00:06:19.899 --> 00:06:23.239 Why do churches and denominations not get along 00:06:23.239 --> 00:06:26.159 and churches bad-mouth one another? 00:06:27.299 --> 00:06:30.739 I think the reason is because fear and insecurity 00:06:30.739 --> 00:06:32.859 and pride and self-centeredness 00:06:32.859 --> 00:06:36.179 is such a real part of our human hearts 00:06:36.179 --> 00:06:38.659 and church leaders as well. 00:06:38.719 --> 00:06:42.060 And we find it so much easier to retreat into our own little tribe 00:06:42.060 --> 00:06:44.579 and to find people that maybe agree with us 00:06:44.579 --> 00:06:49.179 and we, together, find joy in criticizing the church down the road 00:06:49.180 --> 00:06:50.439 or the pastor down the road 00:06:50.439 --> 00:06:52.800 or that group and that people down the road. 00:06:53.720 --> 00:06:56.579 And so that's something of what we see in the book of 1 Corinthians. 00:06:56.780 --> 00:06:58.939 And so we're going to look at 1 Corinthians. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:01.360 If you're new, we are preaching through this book of the Bible 00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:02.540 over the next couple of months. 00:07:03.379 --> 00:07:06.579 And in the city of Corinth, the church there, 00:07:06.920 --> 00:07:09.420 the church is a small church, maybe 30 or 40 people, 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:11.920 but there are factions, there are groups, there are divisions. 00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:13.500 There's this group of people 00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:15.519 and they don't get along with that group of people. 00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:19.060 And there's lots of division and faction going along in the church. 00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:22.000 And so the Apostle Paul writes this letter to him 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:23.399 and he wants to address it. 00:07:23.479 --> 00:07:24.839 And so he does three things. 00:07:24.979 --> 00:07:26.479 And again, I'm sorry, I don't have slides, 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:28.319 but he makes an appeal. 00:07:29.419 --> 00:07:31.399 Second, he exposes the problem. 00:07:32.039 --> 00:07:33.939 And then thirdly, he gives a prescription. 00:07:34.159 --> 00:07:36.240 He gives a solution, an answer to their problem. 00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:37.199 So let's look at the first one. 00:07:37.299 --> 00:07:41.459 He makes an appeal and he appeals for unity and agreement. 00:07:41.659 --> 00:07:43.180 Look at what he says here in verse 10. 00:07:43.180 --> 00:07:44.259 He says, 00:07:44.379 --> 00:07:46.199 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, 00:07:46.360 --> 00:07:48.319 by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:07:48.620 --> 00:07:50.180 that all of you agree 00:07:50.180 --> 00:07:53.120 and that there be no more divisions amongst you, 00:07:53.379 --> 00:07:55.620 but that you be knighted in the same heart 00:07:55.620 --> 00:07:56.800 and the same judgment. 00:07:57.600 --> 00:07:59.540 Okay, so this is Paul's appeal. 00:08:00.220 --> 00:08:01.639 Now remember, last week he said, 00:08:01.960 --> 00:08:04.079 he said Jesus is the head of the church. 00:08:04.300 --> 00:08:05.840 Jesus is the one who's leading the church. 00:08:06.139 --> 00:08:07.899 Jesus is at work in the church. 00:08:08.420 --> 00:08:10.780 But just because Christ is at work in the church 00:08:10.779 --> 00:08:13.439 doesn't mean that everybody else doesn't do anything. 00:08:14.059 --> 00:08:15.799 He says, Christ is at work. 00:08:15.919 --> 00:08:18.459 He's given you gifts to grow you and sustain you 00:08:18.459 --> 00:08:19.439 and carry you to the end. 00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:21.219 But you've got to also do something. 00:08:21.799 --> 00:08:23.179 And what do they need to do? 00:08:23.679 --> 00:08:25.339 They need to be in agreement. 00:08:25.479 --> 00:08:26.419 They need to come together. 00:08:26.559 --> 00:08:28.299 They need to put away their factions 00:08:28.299 --> 00:08:29.979 and mend their --> 00:08:38.220 hey, let's all wear blue clothing 00:08:38.220 --> 00:08:39.960 or let's all, you know, you like tennis, 00:08:40.060 --> 00:08:40.780 I like tennis. 00:08:41.160 --> 00:08:43.680 This is a deep-seated, profound unity. 00:08:44.340 --> 00:08:46.820 He says, be united in the same mind, 00:08:47.220 --> 00:08:48.120 the same judgment. 00:08:48.840 --> 00:08:49.860 Another translation says, 00:08:50.300 --> 00:08:51.780 be of the same convictions. 00:08:51.980 --> 00:08:52.340 In other words, 00:08:52.700 --> 00:08:55.520 the deep-seated foundation of this church 00:08:55.520 --> 00:08:57.580 come together and be one. 00:08:57.580 --> 00:09:01.620 Now, this is obviously not suggesting 00:09:01.620 --> 00:09:04.580 that churches should just be uniform, right? 00:09:04.980 --> 00:09:06.780 We should all just be the same culture. 00:09:07.340 --> 00:09:09.480 We should all just look, address, and act 00:09:09.480 --> 00:09:11.000 and talk exactly the same.
