gathering together, I wanted to pick up something that we should do together when we gather together. 00:01:52.879 --> 00:01:56.180 So this morning we're going to talk about musical worship. 00:01:56.180 --> 00:02:06.400 Take a bit of time to see what the Bible has to say about why and how and what we should sing when we come together. 00:02:07.300 --> 00:02:12.040 Singing is an activity of a people who are waiting. 00:02:13.040 --> 00:02:15.939 So our church has a high turnover rate. 00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:18.800 Lots of young people come through the life of our church. 00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:23.260 And so I think it's good that you be reminded of this if you've been here for a while or maybe here for the very first time. 00:02:23.340 --> 00:02:27.920 Why is it that we do music the way that we do music? 00:02:28.280 --> 00:02:34.140 I don't mean for this to be a defense of the way we do music, but rather a time of equipping for you. 00:02:34.139 --> 00:02:46.839 And we find ourselves in a day we've got to think even more about music and singing and the importance of it as we've had restrictions on our gatherings together. 00:02:46.839 --> 00:02:53.599 And we may have some further and we're anticipating tighter restrictions in the coming months. 00:02:53.599 --> 00:02:58.339 So we want to think clearly about the gathering of the church and what the church does. 00:02:58.439 --> 00:03:01.159 I'm not trying to draw conclusions for you about that. 00:03:01.159 --> 00:03:13.280 I don't have conclusions, but we should have a good theological foundation for singing together if we're going to think well about what we need to be doing in the coming months and year. 00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:14.680 I hesitate to say. 00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:21.280 So we're going to talk a bit this morning about music together, specifically music together. 00:03:21.939 --> 00:03:26.259 When we gather together as a church, why do we engage in musical worship? 00:03:26.259 --> 00:03:31.479 And why do we engage in musical worship the way that we engage in musical worship? 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:37.500 I want to begin with an aside concerning our language concerning music. 00:03:37.959 --> 00:03:49.199 For far too long, the music sung in church has been referred to as worship and the individual leading the music as the worship leader. 00:03:49.199 --> 00:04:01.679 Music rightly sung in our church gatherings or otherwise certainly is worship, but it is not the totality of worship. 00:04:01.979 --> 00:04:10.899 And the individual's leading music is certainly leading us in worship, but not in the totality of worship. 00:04:10.900 --> 00:04:24.620 To call our singing together worship and the individual leading the music, the worship leader suggests that our worship of God is reduced to a bit of time during a service on Sunday morning. 00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:32.860 And it excludes our prayers, taking the Lord's Supper, scripture reading and preaching. 00:04:32.860 --> 00:04:36.400 Paul stated in Romans chapter 12 and verse 1, 00:04:36.460 --> 00:04:47.660 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 00:04:48.600 --> 00:04:55.960 Understand that that word bodies, body is talking about our very being, who we are. 00:04:56.600 --> 00:05:01.139 God means for all of our lives to be committed to his praise. 00:05:01.139 --> 00:05:31.120 God means for all of our lives to be committed to his life. 00:05:31.139 --> 00:05:33.000 God means for all of us to say such a thing. 00:05:33.399 --> 00:05:41.659 And so that's why we'll speak in terms of musical worship and why we'll call whoever's leading our music, 00:05:56.579 The subject of musical worship in churches have been a highly contested one in my lifetime. 00:05:56.579 --> 00:06:06.779 The past decades have been full of what often people call the worship wars, which contain much heat with little to no light. 00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:13.459 The current solution has seems to be for small churches to work to serve a particular demographic. 00:06:14.019 --> 00:06:18.779 We're going to figure out who we're going to try to gather and we're going to design music for that group. 00:06:18.779 --> 00:06:24.079 And for larger churches to cater to every demographic with multiple services. 00:06:24.199 --> 00:06:28.500 We're going to divide everybody up into their preferred style of music. 00:06:29.159 --> 00:06:35.559 And none of this is good for your faith or for the community of faith. 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:43.759 It is not proper for a church to serve preference over purpose in the way that we gather. 00:06:44.280 --> 00:06:53.379 It is not healthy to meet felt needs at the expense of real needs to promulgate consumerism in the worship of our God. 00:06:53.379 --> 00:07:02.300 So, Wes, who was one of our founding elders and our music leader for the first nine years of our church's history, 00:07:02.980 --> 00:07:10.399 and myself in the very early days of Christ Family Church, were a musician becoming a pastor. 00:07:10.719 --> 00:07:15.079 This was the work that Wes was doing as he had some skill that he brought to the task. 00:07:15.079 --> 00:07:24.719 And I was a teacher becoming a pastor, some skill in explaining things, but learning what it meant to lead a church. 00:07:25.199 --> 00:07:29.519 So both of us, with great trembling, opened up our Bibles. 00:07:29.699 --> 00:07:31.219 We believed in the sufficiency of Scripture. 00:07:31.339 --> 00:07:37.019 We believed that the text had what it needed in it to help us, to instruct us on how in the world are we supposed to do this? 00:07:37.019 --> 00:07:42.620 Because we were looking at the world out there and seeing all the varied opinion and all the varied things going on. 00:07:42.620 --> 00:07:45.420 And it felt icky, right? 00:07:45.540 --> 00:07:50.519 It didn't feel right and proper to be catering to the felt needs of people all the time. 00:07:50.579 --> 00:07:56.019 So we said, what does the Bible say about musical worship? 00:07:56.660 --> 00:07:59.120 So we're going to do that briefly together this morning. 00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:06.220 Let's begin our study looking at Colossians 3.16 and then Ephesians 5.18 and 19. 00:08:06.920 --> 00:08:10.639 Before I read these two texts, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us, 00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:13.180 written for his glory and our good. 00:08:13.479 --> 00:08:18.759 So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands. 00:08:19.099 --> 00:08:20.979 Colossians 3.16. 00:08:22.599 --> 00:08:29.199 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, 00:08:30.060 --> 00:08:35.860 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 00:08:35.860 --> 00:08:39.019 And now Ephesians 5.18 and following. 00:08:40.820 --> 00:08:46.200 And do not get drunk with wine for that is debauchery, but be filled with the spirit, 00:08:59.980 So why do we sing together when we gather? 00:09:00.779 --> 00:09:03.179 Because the Bible commands it. 00:09:03.659 --> 00:09:07.319 And the Bible commands it for God's glory and for our single verse, sing praises. 00:09:38.799 --> 00:09:45.439 The Bible contains over 400 references to singing and 50 direct commands to sing. 00:09:45.440 --> 00:09:50.120 The longest book of the Bible by verse count is the Psalms, right? 00:09:50.180 --> 00:09:54.440 Which is a book of songs for God's people to sing. 00:09:55.560 --> 00:09:59.900 It is always so wonderful when we don't plan things rejoicing will follow. 00:11:54.399 --> 00:11:57.439 This should be true of us. 00:11:58.039 --> 00:12:00.559 So we should sing when we are gathered. 00:12:00.699 --> 00:12:06.720 We should sing, the text tells us, psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. 00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:13.559 Psalms are those things coming from, arising from the Psalter, from the book of Psalms. 00:12:13.559 --> 00:12:18.279 We should sing from God's song book. 00:12:18.620 --> 00:12:21.319 It's a helpful and important thing for us to do. 00:12:21.320 --> 00:12:25.580 It helps us to rightly orient the way in which we should sing. 00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:35.160 For example, did you know that a third of the book of Psalms are psalms of lament, crying out in anguish to our God? 00:12:35.560 --> 00:12:39.379 Our gathering together and singing shouldn't all be raw, raw anthony. 00:12:39.379 --> 00:12:44.039 Because people who are hurting have no place in a gathering like that. 00:12:44.159 --> 00:12:50.019 We should sing songs that say, yes, this world is broken and yes, we struggle within it. 00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:51.799 But our God. 00:12:52.960 --> 00:12:59.639 We should sing hymns, which are songs to or about God and what he has done. 00:12:59.639 --> 00:13:04.740 Some examples of that could be how great thou art and holy, holy, holy. 00:13:05.639 --> 00:13:13.879 And we should sing spiritual songs, songs to or about us in relation to God and what he has done. 00:13:14.600 --> 00:13:15.860 Amazing grace. 00:13:16.399 --> 00:13:20.639 And it is well, two wonderful examples of that. 00:13:38.139 We think back to your high school years and think about some band or some individual that you were really into 00:13:38.139 --> 00:13:42.160 and how foolish it seems that you ever thought that that was a person that you should emulate and follow. 00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:45.240 Why do we do such things? 00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:52.120 There are some crazy musicians out there and we think they're so cool and we want to be just like them, right? 00:13:52.120 --> 00:13:56.980 We're wired to be led along by music. 00:13:57.620 --> 00:14:04.560 Every movement, every uprising, every cultural expression has its music. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:06.879 We are musical beings. 00:14:07.799 --> 00:14:13.299 Everyone will tap their foot or bob their head to something, right? 00:14:13.299 --> 00:14:21.379 There's some kind of music that will get a person to move a little bit, even awkwardly at times, right? 00:14:21.379 --> 00:14:32.399 So when we sing, when we are gathered, is our hope that our feelings catch up to the truth that we believe. 00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:37.299 Like it is proper for us to feel the truth together. 00:14:38.220 --> 00:14:41.460 Jonathan Edwards in his work Religious Affections wrote, 00:14:41.460 --> 00:14:50.740 The duty of singing praises to God seems to be appointed wholly to excite and express religious affections. 00:14:51.560 --> 00:14:58.560 No other reason can be assigned why we should express ourselves to God in verse rather than in prose and do it with music, 00:14:58.560 --> 00:15:02.220 but only that such is our nature and frame. 00:15:02.740 --> 00:15:07.900 That these things have a tendency to move our affections. 00:15:07.899 --> 00:15:19.600 We don't sing for the sake of emotion simply, but to get our emotions, to get our we've got this mindfulness that's going on, right? 00:17:50.539 --> 00:17:52.259 We're meant to be mindful. 00:17:52.380 --> 00:17:55.400 If we're going to walk by the Spirit, we're going to have to wisdom. 00:18:47.440 --> 00:18:53.839 We're addressing one another, Colossians 3.16 says, in our singing. 00:18:53.839 --> 00:19:04.959 John Owen once said, we must not allow ourselves to be satisfied with vague ideas of the love of Christ, which present nothing of his glory to our minds. 00:19:05.859 --> 00:19:13.419 We shouldn't sing songs if you could replace the name Jesus with the name of your girlfriend or boyfriend, and the song would still make sense. 00:19:14.679 --> 00:19:19.379 Owen says, these vague ideas of the love of Christ are going to do us no good, right? 00:19:19.380 --> 00:19:24.060 We need the glory of Christ presented to our minds. 00:19:24.940 --> 00:19:34.740 Paul writes in 1 Corinthians chapter 14 and verse 15, I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing
