wooing Portia, 00:01:07.019 --> 00:01:09.539 and so he takes a loan from Shylock. 00:01:09.879 --> 00:01:14.840 And he accepts the condition of the loan that if it's not repaid at the time stipulated, 00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:19.980 he will forfeit a pound of flesh to be taken from near his heart. 00:01:21.180 --> 00:01:23.939 Well, Antonio's ships that he was relying on don't come in, 00:01:24.380 --> 00:01:30.820 and so Shylock goes to court to try to enforce the stipulation that he's made. 00:01:30.819 --> 00:01:33.419 And there is Portia. 00:01:33.419 --> 00:01:36.919 Portia, dressed and disguised as a male lawyer, 00:01:37.419 --> 00:01:40.959 and she has been given permission to hear the case. 00:01:41.899 --> 00:01:46.899 And in this speech that we've read part of, she appeals to Shylock's mercy. 00:01:47.780 --> 00:01:50.419 The mercy that she feels he should have, 00:01:50.819 --> 00:01:54.679 particularly because now the money that he was needing is available. 00:01:54.680 --> 00:01:56.760 But it does no good. 00:01:57.140 --> 00:02:01.200 Shylock has no mercy, and he pursues justice. 00:02:01.400 --> 00:02:04.460 He says, I need my pound of flesh. 00:02:05.440 --> 00:02:07.080 And Portia, as the judge says, 00:02:07.160 --> 00:02:09.640 yes, you are entitled to your pound of flesh, 00:02:10.159 --> 00:02:11.780 but not a drop of blood. 00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:13.540 And of course, that is impossible. 00:02:14.140 --> 00:02:16.100 And the tables are turned on Shylock, 00:02:16.100 --> 00:02:20.760 and the one who refused to show mercy is himself think there are three things in this speech 00:02:32.060 --> 00:02:38.340 which are worth noting as we come to look at the mercy and the justice of God. 00:02:39.020 --> 00:02:42.980 The first is that mercy can't be forced on us. 00:02:43.719 --> 00:02:49.180 That's what Portia means when she says the quality of mercy is not strained. 00:02:50.020 --> 00:02:54.500 You can't twist someone's arm mercy, it has to come freely and out of love and concern for others. 00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:11.039 And so, Portia or Shakespeare compare it to the rain that comes from heaven 00:03:11.039 --> with others. 00:03:49.099 --> 00:03:58.120 And then the third lesson from this speech is that if justice was here without mercy, 00:03:58.120 --> 00:04:04.560 if God was just but not merciful, we God's consistency. 00:05:22.859 --> 00:05:24.379 God is always holy. 00:05:24.919 --> 00:05:26.439 God is always good. 00:05:26.439 --> 00:05:30.019 God is always faithful and loving. 00:05:30.719 --> 00:05:33.660 And so God is always just. 00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:39.579 There is never any injustice in God's dealings with us. 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:44.100 Now we look around our world and we see a lot of injustice. 00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:47.860 Most of all at the moment, of course, as we look at Ukraine 00:05:47.860 --> 00:05:50.540 and we look at what Putin's doing there, 00:05:50.540 --> 00:05:52.780 and we say that is totally unjust. 00:05:52.780 --> 00:05:55.520 It is totally unjustifiable. 00:05:56.140 --> 00:06:00.740 And there are many other situations like that that we probably could consider. 00:06:01.640 --> 00:06:05.760 But even when human beings are trying to be just, 00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:08.180 they don't always succeed. 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:13.080 They don't succeed because they don't know everything about a situation. 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:16.719 And there may be relevant facts and something that we come across 00:06:16.719 --> 00:06:18.359 that we're unaware of, 00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:23.879 and so we do the wrong thing because we didn't know the full story. 00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:27.779 And we can also be unjust because we're prejudiced, 00:06:27.879 --> 00:06:29.039 because we're biased, 00:06:29.459 --> 00:06:33.639 because we tend to do things that are in our own interests. 00:06:33.639 --> 00:06:36.099 When it comes to God, Hebrews 4 says, 00:06:47.099 --> 00:06:50.319 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. 00:06:51.180 --> 00:06:54.439 Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him 00:06:54.439 --> 00:06:57.579 to whom we must give account. 00:06:58.699 --> 00:07:01.419 So God knows everything that happens in our world. 00:07:01.419 --> 00:07:03.360 He knows everything that happens in our lives. 00:07:03.639 --> 00:07:07.180 He knows everything that happens in our hearts. 00:07:07.779 --> 00:07:12.019 He has complete knowledge as we never do. 00:07:13.240 --> 00:07:19.139 And God applies that knowledge in a way that is absolutely fair and unbiased. 00:07:20.039 --> 00:07:22.079 Remember in Genesis chapter 18, 00:07:22.620 --> 00:07:28.379 as Abraham is pleading with God for the city of Sodom to be saved, 00:07:28.379 --> 00:07:31.039 if they can find some righteous people there. 00:07:31.620 --> 00:07:32.659 What he says is, 00:07:32.660 --> 00:07:36.980 Will not the judge of all the earth do right? 00:07:37.580 --> 00:07:41.460 And we can be sure the judge of all the earth will do right. 00:07:42.040 --> 00:07:44.040 God will always ask justly, 00:07:44.380 --> 00:07:48.660 and his purposes are without bias, without discrimination. 00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:53.860 He is absolutely fair and righteous and just. 00:07:54.040 --> 00:07:56.820 God is always just. 00:07:56.819 --> 00:07:59.779 Then the second sentence there says, 00:07:59.779 --> 00:08:06.259 He punishes unrepentant sinners and forgives the penitent who trust in Jesus. 00:08:07.099 --> 00:08:12.519 We might wonder, well, can't God's mercy just ignore all our sins? 00:08:12.519 --> 00:08:16.560 Couldn't a God who is completely merciful just say, 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:19.899 Well, I forgive you, whatever the situation, whatever you've done, 00:08:20.259 --> 00:08:21.839 then you are forgiven. 00:08:22.899 --> 00:08:25.819 Can you imagine what would happen in our courts, in the earthly courts, 00:08:26.060 --> 00:08:27.539 if that attitude was taken? 00:08:28.099 --> 00:08:30.419 If a murderer comes before the judge and just says, 00:08:30.500 --> 00:08:34.179 It doesn't matter what you've done, you're forgiven, you can go free. 00:08:34.179 --> 00:08:36.939 It would be unjust. 00:08:37.859 --> 00:08:39.739 It wouldn't be right. 00:08:41.539 --> 00:08:45.319 And we as sinners, as those who have rebelled against God, 00:08:45.819 --> 00:08:49.699 the right treatment for us, the just treatment for us, 00:08:50.059 --> 00:08:52.179 would be God's punishment. 00:08:53.259 --> 00:08:57.039 The best known verses in the New Testament, I guess, is Romans 6, verse 23. 00:08:57.959 --> 00:09:00.979 For the wages of sin is death. 00:09:01.059 --> 00:09:02.519 Wages is what we deserve. 00:09:02.519 --> 00:09:07.019 Wages is what we should get and what we are entitled to. 00:09:07.699 --> 00:09:11.519 And Paul says the wages of sin is death. 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:16.340 And of course, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:09:17.100 --> 00:09:21.179 So God would be absolutely entitled and absolutely just 00:09:21.179 --> 00:09:25.899 if he were to punish us all, to give us what we deserve. 00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:29.919 And the punishment, the right thing for sin, 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:33.579 is eternal separation from God, 00:09:33.979 --> 00:09:37.639 going to hell after we die. 00:09:38.719 --> 00:09:41.779 But that's only half of the justice of God. 00:09:42.479 --> 00:09:46.120 So the justice of God is in punishing unrepentant sinners, 00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:51.539 but also in forgiving the penitent who trust in Jesus. 00:09:51.539 --> 00:09:58.639 And that is just as much part of the justice of God as the punishment aspect of it. 00:09:59.240 --> 00:10:05.059 Because God is just, because Jesus has died on the cross for our sins, 00:10:05.480 --> 00:10:09.559 then if we trust in him and if we're repentant of our sins, 00:10:10.099 --> 00:10:14.500 then the justice of God demands that we are forgiven. 00:10:14.500 --> 00:10:19.840 I don't know if you noticed in both our that we need to be aware of. 00:10:49.619 --> 00:10:52.500 The one side that says that those who reject him, 00:10:53.019 --> 00:10:56.199 that those who are not repentant for the wrong they've done, say it's unfair that I'm being condemned for my sin. 00:11:10.279 --> 00:11:12.759 That is absolutely what we deserve. 00:11:12.919 --> 00:11:15.319 That is the wages of sin. 00:11:16.259 --> 00:11:17.939 And yet if we know the Lord Jesus, 00:11:18.740 --> 00:11:20.360 if our trust is in him, 00:11:21.179 --> 00:11:25.279 then the punishment having been taken for the wrong in our lives, 00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:28.340 the penalty having been paid, 00:11:28.659 --> 00:11:34.319 the God of justice will ensure that we are forgiven. 00:11:34.759 --> 00:11:39.179 God punishes unrepentant sinners, 00:11:39.700 --> 00:11:44.019 but forgives the penitent who trust in Jesus. 00:11:45.080 --> 00:11:46.960 Then the final thing as we look at justice 00:11:46.960 --> 00:11:51.919 is that God expects us to act justly. 00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:55.480 Again and again as we go through the New Testament 00:11:55.480 --> 00:11:56.980 and indeed the New Testament, 00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:01.720 we find that the command that we are to act justly 00:12:01.720 --> 00:12:05.379 and to do right in our dealings with others. 00:12:05.960 --> 00:12:06.960 There's no mercy on that. 00:12:07.040 --> 00:14:47.379 --> 00:14:48.720 same kind of thing, 00:14:48.840 --> 00:14:51.440 Lord, son of David, have mercy on me. 00:14:51.500 --> 00:14:55.259 My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly. 00:14:55.940 --> 00:14:57.600 Another man came to Jesus and said, 00:14:57.700 --> 00:14:59.420 Lord, have mercy on my son. 00:14:59.420 --> 00:15:03.480 He has seizures and is suffering 00:15:21.159 and to make things better. 00:15:21.259 --> 00:15:22.800 Not because they deserved it. 00:15:23.340 --> 00:15:27.340 Not because there was anything in them that particularly merited it. 00:16:29.279 --> 00:16:31.319 well, maybe I could go back to my father. 00:16:32.120 --> 00:16:34.559 Maybe he would accept me as a servant. 00:16:34.699 --> 00:16:38.019 That would be a lot better says is, 00:19:43.559 --> 00:19:46.379 son, your sins are forgiven. 00:19:46.500 --> 00:19:47.720 That creates a bit of a furore. 00:19:48.480 --> 00:19:51.000 People would think he'd say, rise up and walk. 00:19:51.539 --> 00:19:55.399 And they're thinking, how can he forgive sins? 00:19:55.400 --> 00:19:59.900 And Jesus said, and I think this is a really important question, 00:20:00.780 --> 00:20:03.640 which is easier to say to this paralyzed man, 00:20:04.320 --> 00:20:05.519 your sins are forgiven, 00:20:06.240 --> 00:20:10.259 or to say, get up, take your mat and walk? 00:20:10.780 --> 00:20:12.840 And perhaps many of the people there were thinking, 00:20:13.120 --> 00:20:16.300 well, obviously it's easier to say your sins are forgiven 00:20:16.300 --> 00:20:19.500 because no one can really know one way or the other 00:20:19.500 --> 00:20:20.740 whether it's right. 00:20:21.340 --> 00:20:23.400 If you say, rise, get up your mat and walk 00:20:23.400 --> 00:20:24.460 and
