I suspect most of you haven't. I certainly hadn't until last week. 00:02:56.859 --> 00:03:02.479 If you're interested, he is an ultimate fighter. He's in the UFC, mixed martial arts. 00:03:02.939 --> 00:03:14.000 I don't follow it, but I always like to read those sort of personal interest stories, those interviews that reveal sort of glimpses into the sort of the backstory of athletes. 00:03:14.139 --> 00:03:23.059 And Francis's story is a story of being a refugee from Cameroon to becoming a rising star within the MMA. 00:03:23.819 --> 00:03:35.500 So I was reading and listening to him talk about being like many thousands from Africa, leaving that continent on migrant boats in order to sail to France. 00:03:35.500 --> 00:03:46.520 And then he spent months homeless and penniless in Paris until eventually he found a gym and then he began to train. 00:03:46.879 --> 00:03:51.659 And now he's on this path towards success in the MMA. 00:03:51.900 --> 00:03:57.939 And so I read that in the morning. And then later that day, I discovered that he had a championship fight, which he won. 00:03:57.939 --> 00:04:04.560 And he is now crowned as heavyweight champion in the world of UFC. 00:04:05.180 --> 00:04:12.759 And it's sort of now in my head, those two stories of agony and struggle and victory, they belong together. 00:04:13.079 --> 00:04:14.919 When I think about Francis and Gannou. 00:04:16.740 --> 00:04:20.639 And isn't that true when we think of the story of Easter and the story of Jesus? 00:04:20.639 --> 00:04:25.839 Here we have Isaiah 700 years before the arrival of Jesus. 00:04:26.519 --> 00:04:37.919 And what he's done in the first verses that we've looked at, he's taken us into the agony, to the depths of the suffering and the death of Jesus, the obedient suffering servant of the Lord. 00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:52.040 And today, in verses 10 to 12, we're going to see how the agony and the victory of the resurrection are then woven together as essential elements in the gospel. 00:04:52.200 --> 00:04:55.280 They are two sides of the same coin. 00:04:55.879 --> 00:05:07.280 So that hopefully we will recognise that we are called to respond to the Jesus of Isaiah 53. 00:05:07.920 --> 00:05:14.759 The Jesus who is both crucified for us and risen in glory. 00:05:15.699 --> 00:05:21.680 So the question is, will we worship this Jesus or will we walk away from him? 00:05:22.980 --> 00:05:30.460 So we're going to think about the resurrection of the servant of the Lord and see how that connects with the Lord's will. 00:05:30.459 --> 00:05:40.219 And then think about what that says about the satisfaction of the servant and the triumph of the servant as we move through this text. 00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:46.000 So let's begin with the resurrection and the Lord's will. 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:47.539 Verse 10. 00:05:48.859 --> 00:05:50.219 Look how it begins. 00:05:50.220 --> 00:06:03.720 Yet it takes us right to the heart of the crucial question. 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:07.440 Who killed Jesus? 00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:15.079 And it takes us beyond the religious leaders who plotted and planned against Jesus. 00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:21.779 It takes us past the Roman soldiers who conspired with the Jews to put Jesus to death. 00:06:22.180 --> 00:06:30.139 Ultimately, we see it was the father who planned to kill Jesus. 00:06:30.139 --> 00:06:36.500 Notice it begins, verse 10 begins with a yet. 00:06:38.500 --> 00:06:50.659 It's saying, although we have seen all this truth, although we have seen the servant despised, abused, rejected, killed, buried by those who hated him and opposed him. 00:06:50.660 --> 00:07:02.200 Yet as the curtain is pulled back, beyond human actions, we see it is the Lord's will and the Lord's pleasure to do what? 00:07:03.400 --> 00:07:05.300 This is a remarkable statement, isn't it? 00:07:05.340 --> 00:07:06.500 Look at verse 10. 00:07:06.820 --> 00:07:07.580 It was the Lord's will. 00:07:07.660 --> 00:07:10.940 It's the Lord's pleasure to crush his servant. 00:07:11.540 --> 00:07:14.620 To cause his servant to suffer. 00:07:14.620 --> 00:07:21.139 To make his servant's life an offering for sin, a guilt offering. 00:07:21.780 --> 00:07:29.120 Now remember, the servant is Jesus, the sinless Son of God. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.600 The dearly loved Son of God. 00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:35.720 So the question is that, how do we make sense of this? 00:07:35.980 --> 00:07:40.300 How can the Father delight in the death of his Son? 00:07:40.300 --> 00:07:49.780 And the answer must lie in what the death of his Son, the Lord Jesus, achieves. 00:07:52.379 --> 00:07:54.580 Now to just take a step back for a moment. 00:07:55.280 --> 00:08:00.480 Imagine the Bible, not as a book, but as a symphony. 00:08:01.900 --> 00:08:08.879 And if the Bible was a symphony, we'd hear over and over again the great melody of salvation ringing out. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:12.699 God is a God who delights to save sinners. 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:19.759 But within this symphony, we'd have interweaving themes that come and go throughout the whole Bible. 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:28.000 And two dominant themes are, one, that God is passionate for his glory and his honour. 00:08:28.420 --> 00:08:32.779 So he cannot turn a blind eye to sin and he cannot just brush sin under the carpet. 00:08:32.899 --> 00:08:36.240 He must be just and he must maintain his holiness. 00:08:36.240 --> 00:08:38.100 So God's passion for his glory and honour. 00:08:38.200 --> 00:08:42.019 But also, the other theme that we see is God's electing love. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:51.019 He is passionate to do good to sinners who rob him of glory, who deny him the honour he deserves. 00:08:51.840 --> 00:08:58.399 And what we see and what the Father delights in is that Jesus, in his death and resurrection, he brings those two themes together. 00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:01.399 This is what brings the Father delight. 00:09:02.139 --> 00:09:09.139 That Jesus is passionate for the glory of God and Jesus is passionate in his desire to save sinners. 00:09:10.259 --> 00:09:13.959 And so Jesus becomes our guilt offering. 00:09:16.019 --> 00:09:19.360 And Jesus' guilt offering is a suitable offering. 00:09:20.279 --> 00:09:20.919 He is perfect. 00:09:20.919 --> 00:09:23.079 He is blameless, as the law demands. 00:09:24.219 --> 00:09:31.719 Jesus, coming as our substitute, he meets the demands of God's justice against sin, as every sacrifice did. 00:09:32.279 --> 00:09:37.719 And Jesus also meets the needs for sinners like ourselves. 00:09:37.839 --> 00:09:40.219 We cannot make ourselves good enough for God. 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:45.179 We need the sacrificial work of the Lord Jesus. 00:09:45.179 --> 00:09:54.859 And in his becoming our guilt offering, he brings God glory and he saves sinners and God is pleased. 00:09:56.019 --> 00:09:59.059 Of course, that's not the end of the story. 00:09:59.199 --> 00:10:02.939 The story doesn't end with Jesus' death. 00:10:03.559 --> 00:10:05.319 Verse 10 continues. 00:10:05.320 --> 00:10:11.920 He will see his offspring and prolong his days. 00:10:12.400 --> 00:10:18.160 And the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. 00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:22.460 Beyond agony, there is victory. 00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:25.900 The will of the Lord prospers in his hand, Isaiah says. 00:10:25.940 --> 00:10:26.660 What does that mean? 00:10:27.180 --> 00:10:30.600 It means that beyond the death of Jesus, there is life. 00:10:30.600 --> 00:10:35.840 And in his risen life, Jesus continues the Lord's will. 00:10:36.759 --> 00:10:41.980 God's purpose and plan is worked out in and through the Lord Jesus. 00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:46.800 And what is his plan? 00:10:47.180 --> 00:10:50.180 What is the will and the pleasure of God? 00:10:50.940 --> 00:10:55.320 Well, again, to go back to verse 10, Jesus will see his offspring. 00:10:55.320 --> 00:11:03.980 Jesus, in his dying and rising, purchases a spiritual family that belong to God, 00:11:04.120 --> 00:11:08.700 who with Jesus share in his resurrection life. 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:17.500 And so we are invited by Isaiah and in the good news of the gospel to look to the cross 00:11:17.500 --> 00:11:21.900 and to see there at the cross both the Lord's plan and the Lord's passion. 00:11:21.899 --> 00:11:29.799 His desire to uphold his glory and honour and his desire to save ungodly rebel sinners 00:11:29.799 --> 00:11:38.659 by laying our sin on Jesus, by Jesus enduring our shame so that we might receive his honour. 00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:43.959 So we are not ashamed to say Christianity is a rescue religion. 00:11:44.679 --> 00:11:47.600 The great song of the Bible is the song of salvation. 00:11:48.299 --> 00:11:50.379 And we want to sing that joyfully. 00:11:50.379 --> 00:11:55.759 Nothing in my hands I bring simply to the cross of Jesus I cling. 00:11:56.539 --> 00:11:59.519 So we look to the cross, but we also look to the risen Jesus, 00:11:59.720 --> 00:12:04.100 the one who accomplishes the Lord's will as he becomes that guilt offering, 00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:10.080 the one who accomplishes the Lord's will as he establishes that family of faith that enjoys eternal life. 00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:17.320 As that family covers the globe, the global church, the church through history, 00:12:18.860 --> 00:12:21.259 Jesus accomplishing the Lord's will. 00:12:21.639 --> 00:12:26.160 The death and resurrection of Jesus enthrones him as victorious king. 00:12:27.520 --> 00:12:30.080 So this was the Lord's will for Jesus. 00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:38.980 I wonder how often we think about the Lord's will, the Lord's desire for you and for me. 00:12:38.980 --> 00:12:44.639 Paul, as he writes to Timothy in his first letter to Timothy chapter 2, 00:12:44.980 --> 00:12:52.139 says that God desires all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 00:12:53.740 --> 00:12:54.580 What is that? 00:12:54.759 --> 00:12:55.840 What is that truth? 00:12:56.779 --> 00:13:02.639 That in Jesus we can be part of the family of God rather than being enemies estranged from God. 00:13:02.639 --> 00:13:06.500 That we can receive eternal life and not eternal death. 00:13:06.580 --> 00:13:08.120 That we can enjoy forgiveness. 00:13:09.179 --> 00:13:11.000 That we don't have to live with guilt. 00:13:13.059 --> 00:13:16.620 That's the gift that God desires to give. 00:13:16.840 --> 00:13:20.019 Now of course, we can resist that. 00:13:20.460 --> 00:13:22.120 We can say no to that. 00:13:22.460 --> 00:13:23.360 But why would we? 00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:28.759 Do we know Jesus as Saviour? 00:13:28.759 --> 00:13:33.240 Do we worship him because of all that he has done? 00:13:35.240 --> 00:13:39.460 There's the resurrection and the Lord's will. 00:13:40.939 --> 00:13:49.439 Verse 11 moves from there to think about the resurrection and the servant's satisfaction. 00:13:49.700 --> 00:13:52.200 The satisfaction of Jesus, the servant of the Lord. 00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:57.480 Perhaps you are familiar with performance assessments. 00:13:57.480 --> 00:14:02.639 I know boys and girls that that's something you sometimes have to do in school. 00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:09.159 Maybe in a workplace you have end of year reviews or end of a project reviews. 00:14:09.519 --> 00:14:10.820 It's part of life for many of us. 00:14:11.139 --> 00:14:15.200 Asking questions like, you know, am I happy with how things went? 00:14:16.019 --> 00:14:17.720 What would I have done differently? 00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:21.220 Could things have been done better? 00:14:21.340 --> 00:14:23.139 Could things have turned out better? 00:14:23.139 --> 00:14:37.399 Now Isaiah here pictures, anticipates the servant of the Lord giving his assessment of the cross as he looks back on it as a finished work. 00:14:37.399 --> 00:14:43.899 And the servant is totally satisfied. 00:14:44.459 --> 00:14:53.379 He would change nothing because he has performed, he has achieved the Lord's will. 00:14:53.459 --> 00:14:57.860 And of course the Lord's will is the will of the servant because Jesus is the Son of God. 00:14:57.860 --> 00:15:05.259 So he is totally satisfied with what his performance has achieved. 00:15:06.840 --> 00:15:08.539 Let's see that in verse 11. 00:15:09.539 --> 00:15:10.779 Look at the beginning with me. 00:15:11.500 --> 00:15:18.840 After or literally because he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied. 00:15:18.840 --> 00:15:28.120 Here is a reward anticipated satisfaction that will be experienced because of this suffering that has been gone through. 00:15:28.280 --> 00:15:36.280 So the flow of the first part of the verse is because Jesus has suffered and died and Isaiah has laid that out in verses 3 to 9. 00:15:36.840 --> 00:15:41.660 Because he was despised and rejected, because he suffered, because he took up our pain and suffering, 00:15:41.820 --> 00:15:44.180 because he was pierced for our transgressions, 00:15:44.179 --> 00:15:52.339 because the punishment that brought us peace was on him as he was oppressed and afflicted but bore that silently. 00:15:52.839 --> 00:15:57.199 Now as he was cut off from the land of the living and assigned a grave with the wicked, 00:15:57.399 --> 00:16:01.099 after that comes resurrection. 00:16:01.319 --> 00:16:08.359 He will see the light of life and he knows the satisfaction of the plan of salvation being completed. 00:16:08.360 --> 00:16:12.180 So Jesus can look on the cross and be satisfied, 00:16:12.680 --> 00:16:20.759 knowing it is both the Lord's delight in upholding his glory and his delight in saving 00:16:39.759 To use the language of the book of Hebrews from a different section, 00:16:39.879 --> 00:16:44.200 Hebrews chapter 12, speaks of Jesus who for the joy set before him, 00:16:44.220 --> 00:16:45.779 so this is looking forward to the cross, 00:16:46.039 --> 00:16:48.519 who for the joy set before him endured the cross. 00:16:48.600 --> 00:16:51.480 Now what was the joy anticipated by Jesus? 00:16:51.600 --> 00:16:54.080 The joy of completing the Father's plan, 00:16:54.139 --> 00:16:57.240 of upholding the Father's glory and bringing salvation to sinners. 00:16:57.240 --> 00:17:01.500 And now here in Isaiah, he's looking back and seeing that same joy. 00:17:02.679 --> 00:17:04.940 Now the second part of the verse is interesting. 00:17:05.940 --> 00:17:09.460 Take a look at that verse, the second part. 00:17:10.200 --> 00:17:15.420 By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many and he will bear their iniquities. 00:17:15.500 --> 00:17:24.160 Now our instinct might be to read that to say that knowing Jesus is the key to being justified in God's sight. 00:17:24.160 --> 00:17:29.279 If we are to be declared perfectly acceptable, we can't do that on our own strength or merit. 00:17:29.279 --> 00:17:31.700 We need to know the Lord Jesus. 00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:33.420 And that of course is true. 00:17:34.619 --> 00:17:38.000 But the focus here isn't what do I know about Jesus? 00:17:38.779 --> 00:17:41.779 The focus is what does Jesus the servant know? 00:17:41.779 --> 00:17:47.980 And what Jesus the servant knows, and he alone knows, and sinful people to be acceptable, Jesus must, to use the language of verse 11, 00:18:10.900 --> 00:18:12.960 he must bear our iniquities. 00:18:13.320 --> 00:18:17.880 He must suffer the judgment of God for us. 00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:19.600 He must go under the curse for us. 00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:28.659 Jesus must become, as it were, unacceptable, that we might be made acceptable in God's sight the sacrifice God requires to deal with our sin has to be a righteous one. 00:19:06.139 --> 00:19:09.079 That's Jesus, the righteous servant. 00:19:09.079 --> 00:19:19.019 And the only way his righteousness can be extended to us is if we receive it as a gift. 00:19:20.319 --> 00:19:29.579 God can only be satisfied with us because he is satisfied with his son and we are in Christ. 00:19:30.019 --> 00:19:37.639 By faith we are united to Christ so that when God looks at us, he sees us perfect in the Lord Jesus. 00:19:37.640 --> 00:19:47.300 And it brought Jesus satisfaction to do 00:20:22.880 Perhaps we're not sure where we look for satisfaction. 00:20:23.540 --> 00:20:28.880 Maybe we've tried various things to give our life a sense of meaning and purpose and identity. 00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:34.900 And as the foundations of life have been shaken, we find that we're not sure where to turn. 00:20:35.440 --> 00:20:41.600 Well, the Bible says the one source of true and lasting satisfaction is in Jesus. 00:20:41.720 --> 00:20:48.780 So we look to Jesus and we consider what brought Jesus satisfaction. 00:20:48.779 --> 00:20:58.940 Here in Isaiah, we're reminded that the sinless Son of God took on himself the sin of the world, 00:20:59.440 --> 00:21:03.660 the judgment that we deserve so that we could be justified, 00:21:04.359 --> 00:21:07.180 so that we could stand in God's presence and not be condemned, 00:21:07.379 --> 00:21:09.559 so we could be declared righteous in God's eyes. 00:21:09.920 --> 00:21:11.859 And that brings Jesus satisfaction. 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:12.680 There's love, isn't it? 00:21:12.680 --> 00:21:21.080 Jesus both has satisfied the requirements of the law by becoming our blameless substitute, 00:21:21.360 -->
