that name Jonah, or even son of Amittai, 00:06:52.759 --> 00:06:53.720 we can search the Bible, 00:06:53.720 --> 00:06:59.500 and it takes us to 2 Kings 14, verse 25. 00:07:00.020 --> 00:07:01.240 2 Kings 14. 00:07:02.360 --> 00:07:04.360 And this is what 2 Kings says, 00:07:04.460 --> 00:07:07.660 that Jeroboam II was king in Samaria. 00:07:07.900 --> 00:07:09.180 Samaria is the northern part, 00:07:09.840 --> 00:07:11.140 the ten tribes of the north. 00:07:11.980 --> 00:07:14.740 And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:20.040 When the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter, 00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:21.139 and why was that? 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:24.180 Well, who was the oppressor of King Jeroboam II? 00:07:24.340 --> 00:07:25.120 It was Assyria. 00:07:25.220 --> 00:07:26.620 It was their neighbor to the east, 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:28.960 taking over the land back from Egypt. 00:07:29.319 --> 00:07:31.579 God raised up Assyria to judge Israel. 00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:35.180 Israel was taxing them very heavily. 00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:37.000 They had taken over several of those cities 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:38.220 on those major trade routes. 00:07:38.360 --> 00:07:39.300 They were cutting off their trade. 00:07:39.400 --> 00:07:40.740 They were cramping them economically, 00:07:41.660 --> 00:07:43.100 and politically, and militarily. 00:07:43.100 --> 00:07:47.740 So the Lord let that wicked king, Jeroboam II, 00:07:47.900 --> 00:07:50.100 push back the borders of Israel. 00:07:50.360 --> 00:07:51.460 Even though he's a wicked king 00:07:51.460 --> 00:07:52.939 that had done evil in the eyes of the Lord, 00:07:53.260 --> 00:07:54.040 during his reign, 00:07:54.340 --> 00:07:56.939 the Lord let him push Assyria back a bit. 00:07:58.600 --> 00:08:01.260 This happened, 2 Kings 14 says, 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:03.000 in accordance with the word of the Lord, 00:08:03.100 --> 00:08:03.820 the God of Israel, 00:08:04.260 --> 00:08:06.080 spoken through his servant, 00:08:06.260 --> 00:08:08.860 listen, Jonah, son of Amittite. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:10.280 That's our Jonah. 00:08:11.120 --> 00:08:12.060 And we get a clue here. 00:08:12.060 --> 00:08:14.600 He's the prophet from Gath Hefer. 00:08:15.019 --> 00:08:16.939 So that situates him on the map as well. 00:08:18.300 --> 00:08:20.060 All of this, I believe, is significant. 00:08:20.220 --> 00:08:20.920 So bear with me. 00:08:21.800 --> 00:08:23.819 And why did the Lord allow this wicked king 00:08:23.819 --> 00:08:25.060 to push Assyria back? 00:08:25.600 --> 00:08:28.420 Because the Lord promised to not blot out 00:08:28.420 --> 00:08:31.100 the name of Israel from under heaven. 00:08:31.980 --> 00:08:33.879 So you get the context of the book of Jonah. 00:08:34.360 --> 00:08:36.879 In that first verse, it's Jonah, son of Amittite. 00:08:37.100 --> 00:08:38.440 The word of the Lord comes to him. 00:08:38.440 --> 00:08:40.820 Now the context tells us, 00:08:40.900 --> 00:08:43.720 okay, Israel has wickedness in their land. 00:08:44.280 --> 00:08:45.900 And we can look at the timeline. 00:08:46.560 --> 00:08:49.860 Jonah would have come a little bit after Elijah and Elisha. 00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:52.460 So a little bit after the great prophet Elijah. 00:08:52.620 --> 00:08:53.700 Well, what do we know about Elijah? 00:08:54.700 --> 00:08:57.080 This was a time of wickedness in the northern tribes, 00:08:57.280 --> 00:08:58.400 wickedness in Israel. 00:08:59.020 --> 00:09:00.320 They rebelled against the Lord. 00:09:00.920 --> 00:09:02.700 Remember the prophets of Baal rising up, 00:09:02.760 --> 00:09:04.660 trying to kill off all of the prophets of God. 00:09:05.260 --> 00:09:06.680 Jonah comes on the heels of that. 00:09:06.679 --> 00:09:09.459 And even though the next king, Jeroboam II, 00:09:09.459 --> 00:09:10.679 was very, very wicked, 00:09:11.299 --> 00:09:12.639 God still remained faithful. 00:09:12.739 --> 00:09:14.699 He was long-suffering toward Israel. 00:09:15.579 --> 00:09:17.899 And that's the context in which the word of the Lord 00:09:17.899 --> 00:09:20.039 now comes to a known prophet, 00:09:20.239 --> 00:09:21.639 Jonah, son of Amittite, 00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:23.679 the prophet representing all those 00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:25.739 through whom God was ministering his word 00:09:25.739 --> 00:09:27.459 at the time of this wicked king. 00:09:27.460 --> 00:09:32.360 So my first observation is simply that 00:09:32.360 --> 00:09:35.780 you know the holy presence of God 00:09:35.780 --> 00:09:37.820 through his word. 00:09:37.980 --> 00:09:39.620 When the word of the Lord comes, 00:09:40.040 --> 00:09:41.540 you're getting the presence of the Lord 00:09:41.540 --> of the Lord came to Isaiah. 00:09:48.220 --> 00:09:50.500 He knew he was in the presence of a holy God. 00:09:51.100 --> 00:09:52.740 The word of the Lord came to Moses. 00:09:52.860 --> 00:09:54.460 He had to take off his shoes. 00:09:54.580 --> 00:09:55.560 He's on holy ground. 00:09:55.559 --> 00:09:58.219 The word of the Lord came to the apostle John 00:09:58.219 --> 00:09:59.939 in the book of Revelation, 00:09:59.939 --> 00:10:02.419 and he saw a great vision. 00:10:02.959 --> 00:10:04.559 So the word and the presence of the Lord 00:10:04.559 --> 00:10:05.419 are tied together. 00:10:06.199 --> 00:10:08.339 You know the holy presence of the Lord 00:10:08.339 --> 00:10:10.099 by his word. 00:10:11.719 --> 00:10:14.279 Have you ever heard the word of the Lord? 00:10:15.179 --> 00:10:16.059 Maybe in private, 00:10:16.419 --> 00:10:17.619 maybe with the people of God, 00:10:17.699 --> 00:10:18.979 you've heard the word of the Lord, 00:10:19.319 --> 00:10:20.839 and you just have that sense 00:10:20.839 --> 00:10:22.359 that sweeps over you. 00:10:22.419 --> 00:10:23.579 You can't explain it to someone 00:10:23.579 --> 00:10:24.839 who's never experienced it. 00:10:24.840 the word of the Lord came to Jonah, 00:10:35.580 --> 00:10:36.540 son of Amittai. 00:10:36.660 --> 00:10:39.180 Well, Jonah, his name means dove, 00:10:39.460 --> 00:10:40.940 and the root also means oppress. 00:10:42.720 --> 00:10:44.460 This is interesting because, you know, 00:10:44.500 --> 00:10:45.720 a dove is a very, 00:10:46.340 --> 00:10:48.340 it's a creature that's liable to oppression, 00:10:48.340 --> 00:10:51.500 and it can very easily become prey of others. 00:10:51.500 --> 00:10:54.460 The prophet Hosea, Hosea 711, 00:10:55.179 --> 00:10:56.919 he uses that picture of a dove, 00:10:57.100 --> 00:10:58.279 the root word is oppression, 00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:00.740 and he says this of Ephraim. 00:11:01.059 --> 00:11:02.440 Ephraim was like a dove, 00:11:02.600 --> 00:11:04.259 silly and without sense, 00:11:04.419 --> 00:11:05.360 calling to Egypt, 00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:07.120 going to Assyria. 00:11:07.899 --> 00:11:09.460 Israel was like a dove. 00:11:09.980 --> 00:11:11.899 Israel was liable to be oppressed 00:11:11.899 --> 00:11:13.240 by these kingdoms of the world 00:11:13.240 --> 00:11:14.139 that they keep chasing. 00:11:14.980 --> 00:11:16.199 So you could say in that sense 00:11:16.199 --> 00:11:17.419 that even the name Jonah 00:11:17.419 --> 00:11:19.100 is making him a representative 00:11:19.100 --> 00:11:21.600 of this rebellious,
