And in it he writes this. 00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:46.719 He says there's something deep inside us that diminishes past facts and magnifies present uncertainties. 00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:58.140 Somehow God's faithfulness in the past doesn't carry weight for long, and pretty soon we start feeling as unloved and alone as ever. 00:00:58.840 --> 00:01:03.340 It's just the way we are. 00:02:50.280 And here we are in chapter 30. 00:02:50.439 --> 00:02:56.700 And in this chapter the people of Judah seem oblivious to the fact that God is the one who's taken care of them in the past. 00:02:57.040 --> 00:02:58.340 He's the one who's got them through. 00:02:58.760 --> 00:03:01.879 And so he can be trusted to take care of them in the future. 00:03:01.879 --> 00:03:07.919 And we actually find the people of Judah living and acting like practical atheists. 00:03:08.740 --> 00:03:12.199 They move ahead in their plans as if God didn't really exist. 00:03:12.199 --> 00:03:24.599 But as I mentioned last week the reason God offers works of judgment and the reason God acts in judgment is not only to satisfy his justice. 00:03:25.099 --> 00:03:26.719 It is because God cares about his people. 00:03:27.839 --> 00:03:32.519 He's not willing to leave you and I in a state that is not best for us. 00:03:32.520 --> 00:03:36.420 And so in this chapter I hope that you heard it as we 00:04:25.539 A godly king. 00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:27.959 But he also made the mistake of his predecessors. 00:04:28.740 --> 00:04:33.740 He thought that the way to deal with political threat from the neighbouring superpower of Assyria, 00:04:34.339 --> 00:04:39.599 the way to be comfortable, the way to be protected is to build an alliance with another superpower. 00:04:40.579 --> 00:04:45.120 So the threat for Judah and Hezekiah is coming from the north, from Assyria. 00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:49.759 And so they go running off to the superpower of the south to Egypt. 00:04:50.439 --> 00:04:51.459 And they try to get our help. 00:04:52.599 --> 00:04:57.159 And all along, he seems to ignore the fact that God is saying, 00:04:57.279 --> 00:04:58.979 I am the only one you need in this 00:05:52.259 How he rescued the Israelites out of slavery. 00:05:53.379 --> 00:05:55.000 He showed, didn't he, in the plagues. 00:05:55.080 --> 00:05:58.000 That he has absolute superiority over Egypt. 00:05:58.300 --> 00:06:00.180 And its little gods in the Exodus. 00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:04.720 And the Exodus was the defining experience for the people of Israel. 00:06:05.720 --> 00:06:08.920 It was the way in which they understood who their God was. 00:06:09.699 --> 00:06:11.500 God would say to them, wouldn't he, again and again. 00:06:11.579 --> 00:06:13.060 We read it in the start of the 10th chapter. 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:15.699 I am the Lord your God who brought you up out of Egypt. 00:06:17.100 --> 00:06:21.019 And God even makes it really clear in Deuteronomy chapter 17 and verse 16. 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:26.100 That his people were forbidden to look to Egypt for their help. 00:06:26.100 --> 00:06:30.340 It's not a matter of wisdom for the people of Judah. 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:34.879 It's not a matter of, is this the right thing to do or not. 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:38.660 No, this is a matter of obedience or disobedience. 00:06:40.120 --> 00:06:43.220 God says, I do not want you running to Egypt for help. 00:06:43.520 --> 00:06:45.160 But now look at the people of Judah. 00:06:46.379 --> 00:06:52.360 They think that Egypt is their protection and their shade Egypt is my shade. 00:07:20.439 --> 00:07:21.920 Egypt is where I run to. 00:07:22.280 --> 00:07:23.500 Egypt is my rock. 00:07:24.939 --> 00:07:27.640 And Judah's allegiance and hope is in Egypt. 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:32.640 And they send their government envoys laden with gifts to butter up the Egyptians. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:34.319 And to solicit their help. 00:07:34.680 --> 00:07:39.400 And God says, all this is going to lead to, in verse 3, the end of the first sentence, shame. 00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:41.620 And the end of the last sentence, humiliation. 00:07:41.620 --> 00:07:47.660 Now the question is, how do you get to a place when you're trusting in other people? 00:07:48.680 --> 00:07:51.660 In other powers, in other nations, instead of trusting in God? 00:07:51.720 --> 00:13:54.859 How can he be just and punish the sin of which Isaiah calls this sinful and rebellious people? 00:13:55.019 --> 00:13:57.379 Which if we're honest includes you and I, doesn't it? 00:13:58.179 --> 00:14:01.299 How can he be just towards that sin? 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:06.599 And how can he show us grace and kindness and favour? 00:14:08.539 --> 00:14:11.099 And the answer of the Bible is of course 700 years later. 00:14:12.899 --> 00:14:15.319 It is in the person and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:14:16.199 --> 00:14:16.839 God's son. 00:14:18.719 --> 00:14:21.779
