the biography of Corrie Ten Boom, if any of you familiar with that. 00:02:13.400 --> 00:02:18.139 And just the hope in the midst of suffering in that book, 00:02:18.340 --> 00:02:20.379 along with just some other things. 00:02:20.439 --> 00:02:21.599 So I work with uni students, 00:02:21.900 --> 00:02:27.379 and you may have heard some statistics about how mental health in uni students, 00:02:27.459 --> 00:02:28.240 where they are today. 00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:36.000 And there's a statistic that would say that over 40% of Gen Z battle with depression 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:37.800 and feelings of hopelessness. 00:02:38.460 --> 00:02:39.520 Over 40%. 00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:41.939 And so these things are just on my mind a lot. 00:02:42.260 --> 00:02:47.740 And this passage in Romans chapter 5 has actually just been a big personal help to me 00:02:47.740 --> 00:02:51.120 in times when I feel like I need hope. 00:02:51.120 --> 00:03:00.340 There is actually a global foundation that has been tracking hope, 00:03:00.780 --> 00:03:03.039 what they would call the Hope Index. 00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:08.719 Since 2014, it was a global project, and then it included studies here in the UK. 00:03:09.659 --> 00:03:14.040 It assessed various dimensions of hope, like expectations for a better future, 00:03:14.599 --> 00:03:19.259 one's ability to, or perceived ability to achieve that future, 00:03:19.259 --> 00:03:21.899 and the motivation to overcome challenges. 00:03:23.620 --> 00:03:27.819 Then COVID happened, and newer studies started happening based in the UK. 00:03:28.019 --> 00:03:30.859 There's a company called 5654 and Company 00:03:30.859 --> 00:03:36.139 that started publishing statistics in 2022 on the Hope Index. 00:03:36.539 --> 00:03:41.659 And again, it started really with COVID as they were trying to measure where people are. 00:03:41.719 --> 00:03:44.979 And all this is found in the Office for National Statistics here in the UK. 00:03:45.620 --> 00:03:48.159 These newer studies that began in the UK, 00:03:48.159 --> 00:03:55.859 they suggested that fluctuations in hopelessness were influenced by factors like economic conditions, 00:03:56.419 --> 00:03:59.439 political developments, and societal changes. 00:04:00.579 --> 00:04:07.659 So coming out of COVID, the numbers were like below 40% of people felt hopeful for the future. 00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:10.719 And today that number is closer to 66%. 00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:13.759 It's a massive jump in just a few years. 00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:18.599 And one of the things I think this tells us is just as human beings, 00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:21.659 we view hope in light of our circumstances. 00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:25.500 If things are going well, we're more hopeful. 00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:28.959 If things are going bad, we feel less hope. 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:34.740 But that's not the biblical view of hope and what Jesus has for us. 00:04:34.740 --> 00:04:40.519 So we come to this passage in Romans chapter 5, 00:04:41.340 --> 00:04:45.360 where we're talking about, Paul is talking about sufferings. 00:04:45.939 --> 00:04:47.680 And look what he says in verse 3. 00:04:48.680 --> 00:04:49.019 He says, 00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:52.160 But we rejoice in our sufferings. 00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:56.699 Rejoice in our sufferings. 00:04:56.920 --> 00:04:58.639 This is one of those times where you're like, 00:04:58.699 --> 00:05:00.079 Paul, have you lost your mind? 00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:03.819 What do you mean rejoice in your sufferings? 00:05:03.899 --> 00:05:07.620 Now, my wife and daughter will tell you that I'm prone to hyperbole. 00:05:07.979 --> 00:05:08.139 Okay? 00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:11.060 And a lot of ministers, we'll just call it out, our sufferings? 00:05:27.019 --> 00:05:31.259 To be quite honest, this sounds like something someone would say who hasn't suffered. 00:05:32.419 --> 00:05:33.299 You know what I'm saying? 00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:36.039 Are you out of your mind? 00:05:36.560 --> 00:05:40.319 But we know Paul is one of those people that suffered a ton. 00:05:40.439 --> 00:05:44.000 I mean, in fact, he has different places in Scripture 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.079 where he talks about some of the suffering he's gone through. 00:05:46.579 --> 00:05:49.319 And one time he casually just throws in there being shipwrecked. 00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:51.500 Doesn't say much about it, but just shipwrecked. 00:05:52.099 --> 00:05:53.079 And I was thinking about that. 00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:55.019 Do you know how scary that would be to be shipwrecked? 00:05:55.019 --> 00:05:55.500 Shipwrecked? 00:05:55.819 --> 00:05:57.779 Back in those days, there's no Coast Guard. 00:05:57.899 --> 00:05:58.859 There's no suffering extremely well. 00:06:15.579 --> 00:06:18.560 And he's saying that we rejoice in suffering. 00:06:18.859 --> 00:06:19.859 That word rejoice, 00:06:19.860 --> 00:06:22.100 some of you may have translations of your Bible 00:06:22.100 --> 00:06:25.060 that actually translates the word to boast. 00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:27.360 We boast in our sufferings. 00:06:27.819 --> 00:06:29.340 Now, that seems like a weird word. 00:06:29.420 --> 00:06:31.000 It kind of has a negative connotation. 00:06:31.480 --> 00:06:35.240 And our vocabulary to boast is like to highlight one's successes. 00:06:35.900 --> 00:06:36.100 Right? 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:39.259 But in a sense, what Paul is saying 00:06:39.259 --> 00:06:43.780 is that suffering can highlight what God is doing in our lives. 00:06:43.779 --> 00:06:47.500 It puts a spotlight on different things 00:06:47.500 --> 00:06:48.819 where God is going to say, 00:06:49.179 --> 00:06:51.359 I am there, I am with you, and I am working. 00:06:52.099 --> 00:06:54.000 For those who are in Christ, 00:06:54.779 --> 00:06:57.739 it is not to our shame that we're suffering. 00:06:58.119 --> 00:07:01.219 But instead, it is a place 00:07:59.100 --> 00:08:00.259 through suffering, 00:08:00.259 --> 00:08:03.339 it produces this perseverance and endurance 00:08:03.339 --> 00:08:08.519 that provides a steadfastness to our lives. 00:09:59.740 suffering is not going away. 00:09:59.939 --> 00:10:03.240 This problem hasn't necessarily gone away. 00:10:03.240 --> 00:10:08.539 I'm not promised that it will go away. 00:10:09.299 --> 00:10:38.519 --> 00:10:40.659 or the hope of when Jesus comes back. 00:10:41.099 --> 00:10:42.579 That is certainly true. 00:10:42.759 --> 00:10:45.119 But he's talking about hope now. 00:10:45.899 --> 00:10:48.919 He's talking about that now in Christ, 00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:50.839 having been declared righteous, 00:10:51.059 --> 00:10:51.899 it says in verse 1, 00:10:51.979 --> 00:10:53.000 justified by faith, 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.619 we have peace with God 00:10:54.619 --> 00:10:57.359 and access into this grace in which we stand. 00:10:57.739 --> 00:10:59.459 It's talking about
