you notice if you read through the book of Acts and I've done, you know, we spent about half a year, a few years ago, going through the book of Acts. 00:01:39.959 --> 00:01:47.059 But if you look at the book of Acts as a whole, one of the things that you're going to notice is this a movement taking place. 00:01:47.579 --> 00:01:53.579 You know, I've spent a lot of time thinking about Acts and a lot of time trying to see what God is doing there. 00:01:53.799 --> 00:02:01.379 And one of the things that I keep coming back to is the fact that when you read through the book of Acts, you see God moving. 00:02:01.659 --> 00:02:06.219 You see God working and you see him working through individual lives. 00:02:06.219 --> 00:02:12.479 And so as we see this, a lot of times we don't necessarily relate this to how we see the church today. 00:02:12.740 --> 00:02:16.599 We don't necessarily we see that as something that took place at one point in time. 00:02:16.780 --> 00:02:20.599 And we don't 00:03:17.560 It's a movement of God that is working in people's lives. 00:03:17.560 --> 00:03:25.500 The church is not a destination to arrive at and then leave from, nor is it sometimes we're the church, but the gospel advanced largely through the words and deeds of unordained and uneducated people, informal missionaries. 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:14.459 The church today, in fact, desperately needs to recover this practice, he says. 00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:25.240 He says, the only difference in a believer sitting in his or her American home and a foreign missionary on the mission field is location, not identity. 00:04:26.159 --> 00:04:27.899 Every Christian is a missionary. 00:04:28.819 --> 00:04:32.860 And so each of us should ask, where do I serve? 00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:35.539 To whom do I minister? 00:04:35.540 --> 00:04:40.900 And so I hope and pray that we all desire to see a movement. 00:04:41.300 --> 00:04:49.160 I hope and pray that we all desire revival to take place in 00:05:48.220 And he's speaking to here. 00:05:48.339 --> 00:05:55.000 And in each of these instances, I was struck by something in the way that he ends his description of these churches. 00:05:55.339 --> 00:05:57.939 In each of these accounts, he says this. 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:05.259 He says, he who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. 00:06:06.220 --> 00:06:11.060 He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. 00:06:11.160 --> 00:06:13.420 And so I want that to be our prayer today. 00:06:13.420 --> 00:06:19.939 I want that to be our prayer that if we have an ear, if we're listening to God's word being read, 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:24.280 if what we're seeing and what we're hearing is in alignment with scripture, 00:06:24.280 --> 00:08:55.680 You see, understanding this first part of Acts 00:08:55.680 --> 00:08:58.860 is key to understanding the rest of the book. 00:08:59.460 --> 00:09:01.480 Understanding this first part of Acts, 00:09:01.480 --> 00:09:04.279 and especially Acts 1.8 is key to understanding 00:09:04.279 --> 00:09:05.620 the rest of the book of Acts 00:09:05.620 --> 00:09:07.940 and also key to understanding 00:09:07.940 --> 00:09:11.279 how God works and moves in our lives today. 00:09:12.180 --> 00:09:15.460 Acts 1.8 says that there to be witnesses in Jerusalem, 00:09:16.019 --> 00:09:17.360 in Judea and Samaria, 00:09:17.680 --> 00:09:19.300 and to the end of the earth. 00:09:19.539 --> 00:09:22.460 And then what you see in Acts is this play out. 00:09:22.899 --> 00:09:24.899 Chapters 1 through 7 of Acts 00:09:24.899 --> 00:09:26.980 deal with how the Holy Spirit 00:09:26.980 --> 00:09:29.279 is moving and working there in Jerusalem. 00:09:30.279 --> 00:09:32.220 Verses, or chapters 9 through 11 00:09:32.220 --> 00:09:34.460 talk about how the Spirit is working, 00:09:34.580 --> 00:09:37.899 the gospel is being proclaimed in Judea and Samaria. 00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:39.879 And then from 12 to 28, 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:42.480 you see that the Spirit is working and moving 00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:44.700 to the end of the earth. 00:09:45.159 --> 00:09:46.820 Acts is an exciting book 00:09:46.820 --> 00:09:50.639 that calls us to live an exciting life. 00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:53.399 And to help us understand that this morning, 00:09:53.480 --> 00:09:55.919 to help us see how this takes place, 00:09:55.980 --> 00:09:57.720 there's a few observations 00:09:57.720 --> 00:10:00.480 that I want us to make from Acts 1.8 right here. 00:10:00.860 --> 00:10:02.220 And to begin with, 00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:06.600 I want us to see that disciples go with power. 00:10:07.720 --> 00:10:09.519 Disciples go with power. 00:10:09.699 --> 00:10:09.840 It says, 00:10:10.019 --> 00:10:11.460 but you will receive power 00:10:11.460 --> 00:10:14.860 when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. 00:10:15.419 --> 00:10:17.899 What we see is dependence on the Holy Spirit 00:10:17.899 --> 00:10:19.439 throughout the book of Acts, 00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:22.380 but especially right here in the beginning. 00:10:23.040 --> 00:10:27.720 The Holy Spirit is so vital to us going 00:10:27.720 --> 00:10:30.340 and so vital to the mission of God 00:10:30.340 --> 00:10:31.920 being fulfilled and proclaimed 00:10:31.920 --> 00:10:32.740 that Jesus, 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:35.400 right before he gives this great commission, 00:10:35.780 --> 00:10:37.060 when they're all gathered there, 00:10:37.140 --> 00:10:37.460 he says, 00:10:37.560 --> 00:10:39.180 hey, wait right here. 00:10:39.900 --> 00:10:41.580 Wait until the gift of the Father. 00:10:41.780 --> 00:10:44.660 Wait until you receive the Holy Spirit. 00:10:44.860 --> 00:10:46.640 Because he knows that if they go 00:10:46.640 --> 00:10:48.360 without the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:10:48.360 --> 00:10:49.800 then what they're doing is in vain. 00:10:49.860 --> 00:10:50.139 He says, 00:10:50.340 --> 00:10:52.100 wait for the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:52.180 --> 00:10:54.779 You see that right there in Acts 1.4. 00:10:54.860 --> 00:10:56.419 While they were staying with him, 00:10:56.460 --> 00:10:58.659 he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, 00:10:58.659 --> 00:11:02.680 but to wait for the promise of the Father. 00:11:03.379 --> 00:11:05.600 Jesus tells them to wait for the promise of the Father. 00:11:05.680 --> 00:11:06.800 The promise, of course, 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:08.740 being the Holy Spirit, 00:11:08.860 --> 00:11:10.159 the great helper. 00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:10.480 Remember, 00:11:10.839 --> 00:11:12.259 that the one being talked about 00:11:12.259 --> 00:11:14.379 is the one that Jesus describes earlier 00:11:14.379 --> 00:11:15.240 in the Gospels when he says, 00:11:15.539 --> 00:11:15.620 nevertheless, 00:11:16.039 --> 00:11:16.579 I tell you, 00:11:16.839 --> 00:11:20.000 it is to your advantage that I go away. 00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:21.639 For if I do not go away, 00:11:21.779 --> 00:11:23.399 the helper will not come to you. 00:11:23.620 --> 00:11:24.699 But if I go, 00:11:25.079 --> 00:11:27.019 I will send him. 00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:31.279 And then we get to see this power being unleashed. 00:11:31.659 --> 00:11:32.379 In Acts 2, 00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:34.139 verses 1 through 12, 00:11:34.199 --> 00:11:36.279 it records the coming of the Holy Spirit 00:11:36.279 --> 00:11:37.559 in the day of Pentecost. 00:11:37.559 --> 00:11:40.959 The day of Pentecost marked one of three major feasts 00:11:40.959 --> 00:11:42.500 of Israel's annual calendar. 00:11:42.979 --> 00:11:46.319 And Pentecost refers to the 50th day after Passover. 00:11:46.699 --> 00:11:50.859 And so 10 days after Jesus ascends into heaven, 00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:53.739 we see the gift of the Holy Spirit coming. 00:11:54.099 --> 00:11:57.000 And I think it would be hard to overstate 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:59.899 the significance of what is happening here. 00:12:00.179 --> 00:12:02.579 Our need to be dependent on the Holy Spirit 00:12:02.579 --> 00:12:04.679 to work and to move. 00:12:05.039 --> 00:12:05.899 After priests, 00:12:20.340 --> 00:12:22.000 and they were described this way. 00:12:22.100 --> 00:12:22.379 It says, 00:12:22.740 --> 00:12:25.799 now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John 00:12:25.799 --> 00:12:28.980 and perceived that they were uneducated, 00:12:29.139 --> 00:12:29.899 common men, 00:12:30.220 --> 00:12:31.679 they were astonished, 00:12:31.679 --> 00:12:35.519 and 00:23:11.559 To begin with the call itself, 00:23:11.680 --> 00:23:16.519 you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. 00:23:16.960 --> 00:23:21.180 Oftentimes we hear this and we think only in geographic terms. 00:23:21.680 --> 00:23:23.579 We only think in geographic terms. 00:23:23.579 --> 00:23:24.079 For example, 00:23:24.079 --> 00:23:25.299 if you look on a map, 00:23:25.639 --> 00:23:28.539 you will essentially see that where they were was Jerusalem. 00:23:29.339 --> 00:23:33.099 And the surrounding area around them is Judea and Samaria. 00:23:33.460 --> 00:23:35.059 And the end of the earth is, 00:23:35.439 --> 00:23:35.559 well, 00:23:35.619 --> 00:23:36.439 it's the end of the earth, 00:23:36.579 --> 00:23:36.899 right? 00:23:37.059 --> 00:23:40.019 And so you think of it in these geographic terms. 00:23:40.079 --> 00:23:41.639 And there's absolutely that. 00:23:41.919 --> 00:23:45.619 God has called us to be a witness right here where we are. 00:23:45.879 --> 00:23:48.559 He's called us to be a witness to those places around us. 00:23:48.559 --> 00:23:50.940 He's called us to be a witness to the end of the so some of us are called to be a witness where it's easy. 00:24:06.519 --> 00:24:08.799 Some of us are called to be a witness where it's a little bit more challenging. 00:24:08.940 --> 00:24:10.679 And so what he's telling him is he says, 00:24:33.580 --> 00:24:34.759 go to where they hate you. 00:24:35.259 --> 00:24:38.140 Go to where you will be despised when they're sharing this message. Samaritans. 00:24:43.880 --> 00:24:44.520 In fact, 00:24:44.580 --> 00:24:50.460 this is why Jesus uses a good Samaritan to describe his neighbor to being a good neighbor 00:24:50.460 --> 00:24:52.580 and the good Samaritan, 00:24:52.760 --> 00:24:54.320 because they hated the Samaritan. 00:24:54.420 --> 00:24:55.380 So what Jesus is, 00:24:55.460 --> 00:24:57.500 is telling us is go to where they hate you, 00:24:57.600 --> 00:24:58.880 go to where you hate them, 00:24:59.160 --> 00:25:00.440 and then go to the end of the earth, 00:25:00.500 --> 00:25:03.380 go to places you've never even heard
