here today and I'm actually not a Christian. 00:00:21.400 --> 00:00:26.219 Maybe you've thought about fully embracing the Lord Jesus as your Savior and your King, 00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:27.940 but you just haven't brought yourself to do it. 00:00:27.940 --> 00:00:32.600 And if that's you this morning, then this question is not really for you. 00:00:33.300 --> 00:00:35.520 But most of us here are 00:01:25.199 Maybe the way you lived and some of the choices that you made 00:01:25.199 --> 00:01:30.259 left such a mark that even the consequences of those old decisions are still felt even today. Jesus wants us to be reminded of what it's like to not be a Christian. 00:01:49.379 --> 00:01:55.439 He wants us to remember how life was before we believed. 00:01:56.980 --> 00:02:02.340 He's going to tell us how life is right now for all who are not his people. 00:02:02.340 --> 00:02:07.560 And he does this through the words of his Apostle Paul to Titus. 00:02:08.360 --> 00:02:12.159 We've been working our way through this book, and we're in chapter 3. 00:02:12.860 --> 00:02:17.080 Let me just read the first few verses of our passage for us this morning. 00:02:17.240 --> 00:02:22.599 Titus chapter 3, starting in verse 3. 00:02:23.780 --> 00:02:24.460 Paul writes, 00:02:24.460 --> 00:02:31.719 At one time, we too were foolish, disobedient, 00:02:32.340 --> 00:02:37.560 deceived, and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. 00:02:38.340 --> 00:02:44.319 We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:49.879 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 00:02:50.360 --> 00:02:51.439 he saved us. 00:02:52.020 --> 00:02:54.640 Not because of righteous things we had done, 00:02:55.480 --> 00:02:57.599 but because of his mercy. 00:02:57.599 --> 00:03:05.460 So Paul, speaking for Jesus, has written this letter to Titus. 00:03:05.699 --> 00:03:10.359 For those of you who are visiting with us and haven't been here for the whole series, 00:03:10.519 --> 00:03:12.060 Titus is on the island of Crete, 00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:16.740 and Paul has left him there to put things in order in the churches on the island. 00:03:17.599 --> 00:03:21.359 Titus is to install qualified elders in each of the churches. 00:03:21.360 --> 00:03:25.700 He's to rebuke false teachers who have crept into the churches, 00:03:25.700 --> 00:03:27.760 and he's to teach about God's salvation, 00:03:28.260 --> 00:03:32.460 and about how to live good, holy, and upright lives. 00:03:33.480 --> 00:03:37.500 Paul has just finished urging Titus, here in chapter 3, 00:03:37.880 --> 00:03:42.520 to teach the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, 00:03:42.520 --> 00:03:46.460 to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 00:03:46.840 --> 00:03:48.500 to slander no one, 00:03:48.820 --> 00:03:51.120 to be peaceable and considerate, 00:03:51.480 --> 00:03:53.820 and always to be gentle toward everyone. 00:03:54.920 --> 00:03:59.060 And now as Paul has been urging Christ's people to live good, 00:03:59.879 --> 00:04:01.260 holy, upright lives, 00:04:01.340 --> 00:04:04.800 he now points us back for a moment to reflect on what life was like 00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:08.300 before we came to believe in Jesus. 00:04:08.300 --> 00:04:09.700 He says, 00:04:09.840 --> 00:04:13.920 At one time, we too were foolish. 00:06:49.020 It's the island that's known 00:06:49.020 --> 00:06:50.480 for a lack of self-control, 00:06:50.860 --> 00:06:51.879 for gluttony, 00:06:51.960 --> 00:06:52.720 for drunkenness, 00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:54.000 as we've heard throughout the letter. 00:06:54.480 --> 00:06:55.640 And Christ has been urging 00:06:55.640 --> 00:06:57.200 his people there on Crete 00:06:57.200 --> 00:07:01.160 to live self-controlled lives. 00:07:01.280 --> 00:07:02.780 Don't live that way anymore. 00:07:03.740 --> 00:07:04.939 And so here Paul is saying, 00:07:05.560 --> 00:07:06.939 we used
