They were enveloped by that bright cloud from which God spoke and gave testimony to his son. 00:00:24.920 --> 00:00:33.060 And then Jesus ordered Peter, James, and John not to say anything about what they saw until after he had risen from the dead. 00:00:34.120 --> 00:00:48.420 Well, the next day they made their way back down the mountain only to find that Jesus' disciples, the rest of them, other than Peter, James, and John, were surrounded by this great crowd of people. 00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:53.460 We pick up the story in Luke chapter 9, verse 37. 00:00:54.920 --> 00:01:03.380 The next day when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 00:01:04.680 --> 00:01:07.180 A man in the crowd called out, 00:01:07.180 --> 00:01:13.440 Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is gospel, actually gives the most detail about what happened here, including the moment when Jesus and the three who are with him first arrive. 00:01:50.260 --> 00:01:54.439 Listen to how Mark tells us in Mark chapter 9, verse 14. 00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:01.180 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 00:02:02.219 --> 00:02:08.280 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 00:02:10.379 --> 00:02:12.360 What are you arguing with them about? 00:02:12.360 --> picture this. 00:02:21.960 --> 00:02:24.300 There's this commotion happening in the crowd. 00:02:24.940 --> 00:02:27.860 Jesus' other nine disciples are right in the middle of this. 00:02:28.220 --> 00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:42.060 And all the people are standing around and kind of caught up in this moment. 00:02:43.080 --> 00:02:46.740 And then all of a sudden, Jesus approaches with Peter, James, but wonder what they're thinking in this moment as Jesus arrives. 00:02:59.719 --> 00:03:03.060 Perhaps for the nine disciples that Jesus had left behind, 00:03:03.240 --> 00:03:06.780 you know, I about it. 00:03:46.140 --> 00:03:50.620 And then for this man, the father of the afflicted son. 00:03:50.620 --> 00:03:55.920 You know, I imagine that he had this deep mixture of disappointment. 00:03:57.180 --> 00:04:00.020 That these disciples of Jesus couldn't help. 00:04:00.020 --> 00:04:13.540 But maybe there was also a spark of hope with Jesus' arrival that maybe he can do what his apprentices can't. 00:04:13.539 --> 00:04:18.599 And Jesus walks up to his disciples. 00:04:18.600 --> 00:04:32.860 At this point, as we just heard from Luke, the father comes before Jesus. 00:04:32.860 --> 00:04:36.280 Matthew tells us that he actually knelt before Jesus. 00:04:36.280 --> 00:04:40.160 And he begins to explain to Jesus what this is all about. 00:04:40.920 --> 00:04:42.060 There's this spirit. 00:04:43.280 --> 00:04:45.360 And it seizes my son. 00:04:45.360 --> 00:04:49.160 And when it happens, he suddenly screams. 00:04:50.340 --> 00:04:53.420 And the spirit throws him into convulsions. 00:04:54.319 --> 00:04:56.060 And he foams at the mouth. 00:04:57.980 --> 00:04:59.920 Mark includes even more details. 00:05:00.420 --> 00:05:03.740 This spirit has robbed him of speech. 00:05:03.740 --> 00:05:07.740 And when it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. 00:05:08.680 --> 00:05:12.780 He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. 00:05:14.780 --> 00:05:17.420 Also in Mark, a little bit later in the conversation, 00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:21.120 the man, the father says, 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:25.680 it has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. 00:05:28.139 --> 00:05:32.000 The father says that this spirit scarcely ever leaves him. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:34.079 And it's destroying him. 00:05:34.819 --> 00:05:38.339 Some translations say it severely bruises him. 00:05:42.199 --> 00:05:46.439 It's heart-wrenching even to think about this happening to a young boy. 00:05:51.079 --> 00:05:53.300 One of the things that many have noticed here 00:05:53.300 --> 00:05:57.339 is that some of the symptoms that this boy is experiencing 00:05:57.339 --> 00:06:00.339 are the same as what people with epilepsy experience 00:06:00.339 --> 00:06:02.039 when they have a seizure. 00:06:03.239 --> 00:06:06.439 And I think we should just talk about that for a minute. 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:12.099 Matthew in his gospel actually uses the ancient term for epilepsy here. 00:06:14.479 --> 00:06:17.959 Quite literally, he was moonstruck. 00:06:18.279 --> 00:06:19.899 That was their word for it. 00:06:20.479 --> 00:06:21.000 Moonstruck. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:25.379 That's what we get the term lunatic from. 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:29.660 And back then, it's because they associated that behavior, 00:06:30.180 --> 00:06:30.779 the seizures, 00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:34.800 with sort of the transcendent powers of the moon 00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:37.160 in their understanding of things. 00:06:38.779 --> 00:06:42.160 So they had this very specific word to describe these symptoms. 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:46.220 And even today, we know that people with epilepsy 00:06:46.220 --> 00:06:48.380 sometimes have grand mal seizures, 00:06:48.380 --> 00:06:50.920 which leads to convulsions on the ground 00:06:50.920 --> 00:06:52.980 and even foaming at the mouth. 00:06:54.140 --> 00:06:56.100 And the foaming at the mouth 00:06:56.100 --> 00:06:59.180 is caused by the clamping of the jaw muscles, 00:06:59.540 --> 00:07:03.180 which makes it impossible to swallow normally. 00:07:03.180 --> 00:07:07.180 And then the rapid breathing and the shaking 00:07:07.180 --> 00:07:11.819 lead to saliva frothing or foaming in the mouth. 00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:16.460 But we also notice that all three gospels 00:07:16.460 --> 00:07:20.040 are quite clear that what this boy is experiencing 00:07:20.040 --> 00:07:23.019 is caused by this evil spirit, 00:07:23.660 --> 00:07:24.639 this demon. 00:07:26.660 --> 00:07:28.180 Now that might make us wonder 00:07:28.180 --> 00:07:30.519 if there's a connection between evil spirits 00:07:30.519 --> 00:07:33.399 and certain disabilities 00:07:33.399 --> 00:07:35.620 or health conditions. 00:07:36.379 --> 00:07:38.120 As Mark says in his gospel, 00:07:38.279 --> 00:07:41.359 the spirit also robbed him of his speech. 00:07:42.620 --> 00:07:43.839 It made him mute. 00:07:45.759 --> 00:07:47.159 And so naturally, we may wonder 00:07:47.159 --> 00:07:50.759 how many severe disabilities or disorders 00:07:50.759 --> 00:07:52.599 are caused by evil spirits. 00:07:54.680 --> 00:07:56.979 And I think we need to be very careful here. 00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:00.299 First, there's nothing here to say 00:08:00.300 --> 00:08:01.759 that all mute people 00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:04.220 or all people who have epilepsy 00:08:04.220 --> 00:08:07.079 are possessed or demonized. 00:08:09.420 --> 00:08:12.199 But second, there is evidence here 00:08:12.199 --> 00:08:15.240 that demon possession can result 00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:18.600 in severe bodily harm or disability. 00:08:21.100 --> 00:08:23.240 So we don't want to deny the effects 00:08:23.240 --> 00:08:24.420 of the spirit altogether 00:08:24.420 --> 00:08:26.300 because it clearly can happen 00:08:26.300 --> 00:08:27.939 and did in this boy's life. 00:08:27.939 --> 00:08:31.500 Neither do we want to take it 00:08:31.500 --> 00:08:32.440 to the other extreme 00:08:32.440 --> 00:08:35.179 and assume that all or even most disabilities 00:08:35.179 --> 00:08:37.620 are caused by evil spirits. 00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:42.519 If we look at some of the other accounts 00:08:42.519 --> 00:08:45.000 of evil spirits in the New Testament, 00:08:46.100 --> 00:08:47.340 demon possession, 00:08:47.919 --> 00:08:50.340 one thing that seems obvious 00:08:50.340 --> 00:08:52.259 is that when a person is possessed 00:08:52.259 --> 00:08:53.360 by an evil spirit, 00:08:53.519 --> 00:08:55.840 they do seem to lose some measure of control 00:08:55.840 --> 00:08:57.780 over their own bodies 00:08:57.780 --> 00:08:59.860 to the spirit. 00:09:00.360 --> 00:09:01.580 The spirit seems to be able 00:09:01.580 --> 00:09:03.920 to make them do or say things 00:09:03.920 --> 00:09:06.200 that they wouldn't otherwise do or say. 00:09:09.639 --> 00:09:12.360 And so did this boy have epilepsy 00:09:12.360 --> 00:09:15.480 or was it just the demon 00:09:15.480 --> 00:09:16.800 having its way with him? 00:09:18.180 --> 00:09:19.540 We don't know exactly. 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:21.060 Could it have been both? 00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:25.919 One of the disturbing things mentioned here 00:09:25.919 --> 00:09:27.959 that really points to the spirit 00:09:27.959 --> 00:09:29.799 as an explanation for all this 00:09:29.799 --> 00:09:31.799 is in Mark's gospel, 00:09:32.159 --> 00:09:33.099 Mark 9.22, 00:09:33.579 --> 00:09:36.819 where Mark tells us 00:09:36.819 --> 00:09:38.439 what the father said, 00:09:38.500 --> 00:09:39.519 it has often thrown him 00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:41.019 into fire or water 00:09:41.019 --> 00:09:42.039 to kill him. 00:09:44.519 --> 00:09:46.500 So this is a deliberateness. 00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:49.079 If he just had epilepsy, 00:09:49.080 --> 00:09:50.940 you know, 00:09:51.020 --> 00:09:52.300 we wouldn't see that. 00:09:52.840 --> 00:09:54.480 But this is clearly 00:09:54.480 --> 00:09:55.940 more than just epilepsy. 00:09:58.500 --> 00:09:59.620 One of the worst things 00:09:59.620 --> 00:10:00.620 I think though we can do 00:10:00.620 --> 00:10:01.320 from this account 00:10:01.320 --> 00:10:02.340 is to begin assuming 00:10:02.340 --> 00:10:04.940 that most disabilities 00:10:04.940 --> 00:10:06.340 or illnesses 00:10:06.340 --> 00:10:07.500 that we see in people 00:10:07.500 --> 00:10:08.440 are demon caused. 00:10:09.780 --> 00:10:11.680 And then even worse, 00:10:11.780 --> 00:10:13.040 to try and cast demons 00:10:13.040 --> 00:10:14.500 out of people with disabilities 00:10:14.500 --> 00:10:16.600 who aren't possessed. 00:10:16.600 --> 00:10:18.820 Sadly, this has happened 00:10:18.820 --> 00:10:19.620 far too often 00:10:19.620 --> 00:10:20.259 by people 00:10:20.259 --> 00:10:21.840 in the name of Christ. 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:24.560 There's more than one
