00:18:52.560 It wasn't in the passage you read, verse 21 of chapter 2. 00:18:52.559 --> 00:18:58.740 And then after around 40 days, there were two things, two duties that his parents had. 00:18:59.500 everyone in Egypt were slain, 00:19:18.679 --> 00:19:21.440 except for the firstborn of the Jews. 00:19:21.440 --> 00:19:26.880 And following on from that, the firstborn of every family should have been dedicated to the Lord. 00:19:26.940 --> 00:19:29.559 A good example of that way was Samuel from the Old Testament. 00:19:29.940 --> 00:19:33.480 Now by the Lord's time, the practice has slightly changed. 00:19:33.820 --> 00:19:36.920 In general, the parents would make a payment into the temple treasury, 00:19:37.320 --> 00:19:41.700 and that would kind of release them of their obligation to dedicate their firstborn to the son. 00:19:41.960 --> 00:19:46.640 And it was the Levites who did looking after the temple and all that kind of stuff. 00:19:46.640 --> 00:19:48.360 So that was one thing the parents had to do, though. 00:19:48.620 --> 00:19:51.480 They had to dedicate their son to the Lord. 00:19:51.960 --> 00:19:55.420 And the second thing they had to do, because Mary had been pregnant, had a baby, 00:19:55.560 --> 00:20:00.800 she was considered unclean under the law, and they had to make sacrifices for that. 00:20:01.200 --> 00:20:06.140 The sacrifices they made indicate they probably were relatively poorly off, 00:20:06.140 --> 00:20:09.000 because those who were better off would have sacrificed a lamb, 00:20:09.400 --> 00:20:12.440 and they sacrificed two turtle be too long this morning. 00:20:53.140 --> 00:20:56.160 The first thing is that Simeon was filled with what I've called 00:20:56.160 --> 00:20:58.500 a spirit-filled anticipation. 00:20:58.500 --> 00:21:04.000 He was waiting for God's Messiah to come. 00:21:05.099 --> 00:21:06.819 The word that's used here for waiting, 00:21:06.940 --> 00:21:08.980 it says he was waiting for the consolation of Israel. 00:21:09.180 --> 00:21:11.539 The word that's used there is used of three people, 00:21:11.799 --> 00:21:14.200 or three groups of people, in the Gospel of Luke. 00:21:14.700 --> 00:21:15.880 First of them is Simeon. 00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:18.200 The second one we read later in the passage, 00:21:18.660 --> 00:21:21.140 it is Anna and those who are around her who are waiting 00:21:21.140 --> 00:21:24.900 for the Messiah, the redemption of Jerusalem. 00:21:24.900 --> 00:21:27.400 And then right at the end of Luke's Gospel, 00:21:27.560 --> 00:21:28.620 we have a third person. 00:21:29.060 --> 00:21:32.060 It's Joseph of Arimathea who buried the body of the Lord Jesus, 00:21:32.580 --> 00:21:36.540 and it says he was waiting for the kingdom of God. 00:21:37.300 --> 00:21:41.160 The sense of the waiting is very much it was waiting with anticipation. 00:21:42.100 --> 00:21:45.460 It was really looking forward to something that was going to happen 00:21:45.460 --> 00:21:48.560 and waiting to welcome it. 00:21:48.559 --> 00:21:53.339 Now, it has to be said, there weren't that many people in Israel at that time 00:21:53.339 --> 00:21:55.319 who were waiting in that way. 00:21:56.099 --> 00:21:59.059 The religion of the nation had become largely sterile. 00:21:59.679 --> 00:22:06.419 It had become largely just following a series of laws set by the Pharisees it had been 400 years 00:22:15.839 --> 00:22:19.619 since God had last spoken to the nation of Israel. 00:22:19.720 --> 00:22:23.399 But Simeon was one who was waiting for God's time, 00:22:23.720 --> 00:22:25.759 waiting for, it says, the consolation of Israel, 00:22:25.839 --> 00:22:29.059 the one who would come to provide comfort and solace to Israel, 00:22:29.319 --> 00:22:32.980 which I remember was then under Roman occupation. 00:22:34.039 --> 00:22:39.039 And it isn't there, I think, for us, about waiting for God's time. 00:22:39.039 --> 00:22:43.279 We have a schedule sometimes of three times the Holy Spirit is mentioned. 00:23:33.259 --> 00:23:35.660 Verse 25, the Holy Spirit was upon him. 00:23:35.660 --> 00:23:38.340 In verse 26, it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit 00:23:38.340 --> 00:23:41.000 that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 00:23:41.400 --> 00:23:45.759 Verse 27, moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple court. 00:23:45.860 --> 00:23:47.140 And indeed, there could have been another one 00:23:47.140 --> 00:23:52.360 because I'm sure that his song was also inspired by the Spirit. 00:23:53.180 --> 00:23:55.740 light for revelation to the Gentiles, 00:25:06.500 --> 00:25:10.059 and for glory to your people Israel. 00:25:11.559 --> 00:25:14.420 I think Simeon had been meditating on the prophecy of Isaiah, 00:25:15.039 --> 00:25:17.200 because the words that he brings out 00:25:17.200 --> 00:25:19.819 are very similar to those in Isaiah chapter 42, 00:25:19.819 --> 00:25:24.720 when Isaiah is looking forward to the servant of the Lord who would come. 00:25:25.159 --> 00:25:26.179 This is what he says, 00:25:26.819 --> 00:25:30.200 I will keep you and make you to be a covenant for the people 00:25:30.200 --> 00:25:32.879 and a light for the Gentiles, 00:25:33.119 --> 00:25:34.899 to open eyes that are blind, 00:25:35.059 --> 00:25:36.439 to free captives from prison, 00:25:36.980 --> 00:25:41.279 and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. 00:25:41.399 --> 00:25:41.700 And of course, 00:25:41.740 --> 00:25:44.119 the last part of that was what the Lord was preaching on 00:25:44.119 --> 00:25:47.539 a little bit later on in Luke's Gospel, 00:25:48.199 --> 00:25:52.719 as he preached what was the first recorded sermon that we know of his. 00:25:53.439 --> 00:25:55.119 So Simeon had been reading the Scriptures, 00:25:55.799 --> 00:25:57.839 he'd understood what God was saying, 00:25:58.239 --> 00:25:59.739 he saw that the one who had come, 00:25:59.819 --> 00:26:00.659 this little baby, 00:26:00.979 --> 00:26:03.339 was the one who would bring God's salvation, 00:26:03.979 --> 00:26:06.500 and his mind went back to the prophecy of Isaiah 00:26:06.500 --> 00:26:07.459 that he'd been studying, 00:26:07.879 --> 00:26:10.819 and he was able to echo that in his song. 00:26:10.819 --> 00:26:13.439 Now the song is all about seeing, 00:26:13.879 --> 00:26:15.399 and it's about light. 00:26:16.519 --> 00:26:17.480 So the first thing he says, 00:26:17.599 --> 00:26:20.099 my eyes have seen your salvation, 00:26:20.659 --> 00:26:25.379 which you have prepared in the sight of all the people. 00:26:25.460 --> 00:26:26.619 I've seen your salvation, 00:26:27.299 --> 00:26:31.599 it's prepared in the sight of all the people. --> 00:26:58.119 just a little baby he saw, 00:26:58.379 --> 00:27:00.099 wasn't anything particularly spectacular, 00:27:00.279 --> 00:27:03.980 but he knew that through that baby salvation would come. 00:27:03.980 --> 00:27:06.079 And my eyes have seen your salvation, 00:27:06.700 --> 00:27:11.420 which you have prepared in the sight of all people. 00:27:12.039 --> 00:27:15.980 Simeon knew that eyes were going to be opened by the Lord Jesus, 00:27:16.180 --> 00:27:18.880 that those who were receptive would see him, 00:27:19.339 --> 00:27:22.480 and would find salvation for themselves. first time in Luke's Gospel 00:27:40.320 --> 00:27:42.280 that it says explicitly 00:27:42.280 --> 00:27:46.300 that Jesus came to be saviour of Gentiles, 00:27:46.420 --> 00:27:48.320 as well as Jews. 00:27:48.920 --> 00:27:50.740 When the angel Gabriel came to Mary, 00:27:51.120 --> 00:27:53.100 he talked about Jesus being a king 00:27:53.100 --> 00:27:55.740 on the throne of David forever. 00:27:55.740 --> 00:27:59.720 When the angels came to the shepherds, 00:27:59.980 --> 00:28:01.099 they said it was good news, 00:28:01.220 --> 00:28:02.519 which would be for all people, 00:28:02.660 --> 00:28:03.440 or all the people, 00:28:03.859 --> 00:28:05.400 but the shepherds may well have thought 00:28:05.400 --> 00:28:06.980 that is just for the Jews, 00:28:07.079 --> 00:28:07.799 for all the Jews, 00:28:07.920 --> 00:28:10.400 because they are God's people. 00:28:11.539 --> 00:28:12.599 Here Simeon says, 00:28:12.740 --> 00:28:15.319 no, it's not just for the Jews. 00:28:16.279 --> 00:28:18.539 It is something that will reveal God 00:28:18.539 --> 00:28:20.799 to the Gentiles. 00:28:21.359 --> 00:28:24.099 This one who has come to be the light of the world, 00:28:24.099 --> 00:28:26.379 this one who has come to show us 00:28:26.379 --> 00:28:28.359 what God is like. 00:28:28.879 --> 00:28:30.399 He's not going to be restricted 00:28:30.399 --> 00:28:32.719 to one nation in the Middle East. 00:28:33.319 --> 00:28:35.019 He is the saviour who is here 00:28:35.019 --> 00:28:36.399 for all the world, 00:28:36.799 --> 00:28:39.699 for all who will believe in him. 00:28:40.279 --> 00:28:41.659 That's a fantastic message, 00:28:42.099 --> 00:28:43.500 that Jesus is there, 00:28:43.699 --> 00:28:46.439 not just for any kind of select group of people, 00:28:46.839 --> 00:28:49.779 not just for a few privileged folk. 00:28:50.179 --> 00:28:51.659 He is there for anyone 00:28:51.660 --> 00:28:53.620 who will put their trust in him, 00:28:54.019 --> 00:28:56.420 who will believe that through his death on the cross, 00:28:56.860 --> 00:28:59.320 that they can have forgiveness for sin, 00:28:59.380 --> 00:29:02.019 they can enjoy his salvation. 00:29:02.140 --> 00:29:04.720 The revelation was to the Gentiles 00:29:04.720 --> 00:29:07.140 as well as to the Jews. 00:29:08.240 --> 00:29:09.860 It doesn't mean that the Jews weren't special, 00:29:09.940 --> 00:29:10.940 and aren't special, 00:29:11.019 --> 00:29:12.460 because Simeon goes on and says, 00:29:12.540 --> 00:29:15.779 for glory to your people, Israel. 00:29:16.420 --> 00:29:17.640 And it is still special. 00:29:17.779 --> 00:29:18.900 The Jews were for God's, 00:29:18.900 --> 00:29:22.080 who are God's people throughout the Old Testament times. 00:29:22.519 --> 00:29:26.320 They are still a very special people in God's sight, 00:29:26.900 --> 00:29:29.660 because out of that nation of Israel 00:29:29.660 --> 00:29:34.400 came the one who is the Messiah of the whole world. 00:29:35.800 --> 00:29:38.440 And Jesus is, in a very real sense, 00:29:38.820 --> 00:29:42.320 one who brings glory to that nation. 00:29:42.319 --> 00:29:45.819 Israel is still seen in our world as being special, 00:29:46.000 --> 00:29:47.419 perhaps a slightly different nation, 00:29:47.519 --> 00:29:49.259 obviously caught up in the tensions 00:29:49.259 --> 00:29:51.899 and turmoil of the Middle East, 00:29:52.179 --> 00:29:55.740 but it is still the nation that God called to be his own. 00:29:56.539 --> 00:29:57.960 It is a nation that we read about 00:29:57.960 --> 00:30:00.279 that has a future with God. 00:30:00.939 --> 00:30:04.200 It is a nation from which the Messiah came, 00:30:04.299 --> 00:30:08.099 and for that, he is the glory of Israel. 00:30:08.099 --> 00:30:10.500 The salvation that God gives, 00:30:10.959 --> 00:30:15.879 that Simeon saw in that baby in the temple in Jerusalem, 00:30:16.500 --> 00:30:18.199 it is for all of us, 00:30:18.619 --> 00:30:20.919 all of us who will receive it. 00:30:23.899 --> 00:30:26.179 And finally, Simeon doesn't just stop at the end 00:30:26.179 --> 00:30:27.959 of what I suppose we may think of as his song, 00:30:28.039 --> 00:30:30.619 but he has something more to say specifically 00:30:30.619 --> 00:30:33.339 to Mary, the mother of the Lord Jesus, 00:30:33.500 --> 00:30:35.859 from verse 33 onward. 00:30:35.859 --> 00:30:38.819 And I've called this a heart-rending revelation, 00:30:39.000 --> 00:30:40.919 a heart-rending revelation. 00:30:41.459 --> 00:30:42.559 Heart-rending for Mary. 00:30:43.319 --> 00:30:45.559 Mary had the joy of being a new mother. 00:30:46.099 --> 00:30:48.419 She knew that this baby who had been born to her 00:30:48.419 --> 00:30:49.559 was very special, 00:30:50.179 --> 00:30:52.219 and Simeon is the one who has to point out to her, 00:30:52.299 --> 00:30:54.559 yes, the baby is very special indeed, 00:30:55.119 --> 00:30:57.259 but it's going to cause great pain for you 00:30:57.259 --> 00:30:58.539 and looking forward undoubtedly 00:30:58.539 --> 00:31:01.799 to the death of the Lord Jesus. 00:31:02.879 --> 00:31:05.219 So for Mary, there was something, 00:31:05.220 --> 00:31:07.539 Simeon says, a sword will pierce your own soul, 00:31:08.059 --> 00:31:10.660 that she would have to suffer the anguish 00:31:10.660 --> 00:31:12.100 of seeing her son crucified, 00:31:12.779 --> 00:31:14.579 and perhaps at that point not realising 00:31:14.579 --> 00:31:17.380 that he would be raised again gloriously. 00:31:17.880 --> 00:31:20.579 So it was heart-rending for Mary. 00:31:21.160 --> 00:31:24.100 But I think heart-rending goes a bit beyond that. 00:31:24.600 --> 00:31:26.720 Because the Bible tells us that the word of God 00:31:26.720 --> 00:31:27.819 is like a sword, 00:31:28.279 --> 00:31:31.900 and that it pierces between the bone and the marrow. 00:31:31.900 --> 00:31:34.259 So it is something which reveals 00:31:34.259 --> 00:31:36.900 the hidden things of our hearts. 00:31:37.600 --> 00:31:39.280 And Jesus says, Simeon is someone 00:31:39.280 --> 00:31:41.420 who is going to reveal the hidden things, 00:31:41.460 --> 00:31:43.660 the things that people would rather keep secret 00:31:43.660 --> 00:31:47.700 and would differentiate between one and another. 00:31:47.700 --> 00:31:51.640 So he says in verse 34, 00:31:52.140 --> 00:31:54.580 this child is destined to cause the falling 00:31:54.580 --> 00:31:58.380 and rising of many in Israel 00:31:58.380 --> 00:32:02.080 and to be a sign that will be spoken against. 00:32:02.960 --> 00:32:04.240 When it says falling and rising, 00:32:04.360 --> 00:32:06.580 it may mean falling and rising of one person 00:32:06.580 --> 00:32:09.460 in the sense that they would be brought to their knees 00:32:09.460 --> 00:32:11.539 as they realised their sin and then raised again 00:32:11.539 --> 00:32:14.600 as they saw the salvation through Jesus. 00:32:14.599 --> 00:32:16.740 I think more likely it's talking about 00:32:16.740 --> 00:32:18.359 two different groups of people. 00:32:18.980 --> 00:32:20.859 One whom it would be cause to fall 00:32:20.859 --> 00:32:23.779 and one who would be cause to rise. 00:32:24.480 --> 00:32:25.439 So for some people, 00:32:25.599 --> 00:32:27.159 Jesus would be a stumbling block. 00:32:27.799 --> 00:32:29.419 He would be someone they would see, 00:32:29.759 --> 00:32:31.459 they would witness what he was doing, 00:32:31.799 --> 00:32:33.459 they would hear what he was saying, 00:32:33.779 --> 00:32:35.659 and they would turn away from him. 00:32:36.179 --> 00:32:38.000 It would be unacceptable to them, 00:32:38.339 --> 00:32:40.079 and particularly for the Jews, 00:32:40.240 --> 00:32:41.480 when he went to the cross, 00:32:41.519 --> 00:32:43.000 when he was crucified there, 00:32:43.000 --> 00:32:44.579 that was, says Paul, 00:32:44.720 --> 00:32:48.539 it was a stumbling block for the Jews. 00:32:49.440 --> 00:32:52.079 And as Jesus forced people to make a choice 00:32:52.079 --> 00:32:53.420 about who he was 00:32:53.420 --> 00:32:56.019 and to think how that affected their lives, 00:32:56.539 --> 00:32:58.880 for some it would be something that made them fall, 00:32:59.460 --> 00:33:02.200 that turned them away from God in a sense 00:33:02.200 --> 00:33:04.640 as they saw the goodness and the holiness of God 00:33:04.640 --> 00:33:06.640 and how far short of it they were, 00:33:07.180 --> 00:33:10.039 Jesus would be the one who would make them fall. 00:33:10.039 --> 00:33:13.440 But for others, he would be the one who would make them rise. 00:33:13.519 --> 00:33:15.019 The word that's used here for rise, 00:33:15.379 --> 00:33:17.859 everywhere else that's used in the New Testament 00:33:17.859 --> 00:33:19.879 is translated resurrection. 00:33:21.220 --> 00:33:22.720 And I think that's appropriate, 00:33:23.259 --> 00:33:24.779 that Jesus would be the one 00:33:24.779 --> 00:33:28.359 who would raise those who trust in him to life, 00:33:29.019 --> 00:33:32.240 that they would rise from the deadness of their sin 00:33:32.240 --> 00:33:34.900 and their
