thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through Him and for Him. 00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:28.280 And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. just continued to preach the exact same sermon. 00:04:31.500 --> 00:04:34.439 And one of his congregants came up and asked him, 00:04:35.319 --> 00:04:39.000 Luther, why do you keep preaching to us the same sermon? 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:45.079 And he said, well, when you start showing up living like you believe it, I'll move on to something else. 00:04:45.879 --> 00:04:52.180 For quite some time, I think a period of about two months, he preached the same text again and again. 00:04:53.100 --> 00:05:01.740 And so such significant texts can be helpful to us, I think, to come back to them, retouch on them, be reminded of them. 00:05:02.620 --> 00:05:08.379 Now, every part of God's Word gives testimony about Jesus Christ. 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:16.579 In Luke chapter 24 and verse 27, you Jesus, perhaps none is more significant and beautiful and precious than the text before us today. 00:05:49.959 --> 00:05:55.899 You see, beloved, the reality of who Jesus is demands our affections and our obedience. 00:05:55.899 --> 00:06:05.399 Because if we say that we are disciples of Jesus Christ, we are not saying that we are following a mere man, but God himself. 00:06:06.299 --> 00:06:17.060 And we have a great confidence in claiming Christ as our teacher, because the reality of who Jesus is makes sure the promises of God. 00:06:17.060 --> 00:06:25.899 2 Corinthians 1 and verse 20, for all the promises of God find their yes in Jesus Christ. 00:06:26.939 --> 00:06:37.259 Now, it is important as we're looking at this text to know that verses 15 through 18 are thought to be a cosmic Jesus. 00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:49.240 Every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth. 00:07:49.319 --> 00:07:54.740 And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. 00:07:55.659 --> 00:07:59.839 So according to Paul, Christ is first in all things. 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:01.199 He is preeminent. 00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:08.560 But how should we consider the truth contained within this text the preeminence of Christ? 00:08:09.060 --> 00:08:12.219 How should we do such a work? 00:08:13.159 --> 00:08:15.379 The Puritan John Owen wrote in his book entitled, 00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:18.800 The Glory of Christ, the following, and I quote, 00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:37.560 The revelation made of Christ in the blessed gospel is far more excellent, more glorious, more filled with rays of divine wisdom and goodness that the whole creation and the just comprehension of it, if attainable, cannot contain or afford. 00:08:37.559 --> 00:08:45.419 Without this knowledge, the mind of man priding itself in other inventions and discoveries is wrapped up in darkness and confusion. 00:08:45.419 --> 00:08:53.879 This therefore deserves the severest of our thoughts, the best of our meditations and our utmost diligence in them. 00:08:53.879 --> 00:09:14.519 For if our future blessedness shall consist in living where he is and beholding his glory, what better preparation can there be for it than a constant previous contemplation of that glory as revealed in the gospel, that by a view of it, we may be gradually transformed into the same glory. Number two, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is the Lord of the universe. 00:10:36.139 --> 00:10:37.639 Verse 16 and 17. 00:10:37.639 --> 00:10:42.740 Number three, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is the head of the church. 00:10:42.860 --> 00:10:43.580 Verse 18. 00:10:44.519 --> 00:10:49.659 And number four, Jesus Christ is preeminent because of his redemptive work. 00:10:50.139 --> 00:10:50.620 Verse 20. 00:10:51.559 --> 00:10:56.759 So first, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is God. 00:10:56.960 --> 00:11:03.179 Verse 15 says he is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 00:11:03.179 --> 00:11:11.319 Paul says Jesus is the icon, the image or likeness of God. 00:11:11.939 --> 00:11:17.279 The scripture refers to man as the icon of God, but representation and the perfect manifestation of God. 00:11:29.639 --> 00:11:40.340 Hebrews chapter 1 and verse 3, the beginning of it, tells us Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature. 00:11:41.439 --> 00:11:48.439 Christ shines forth God's attributes as the sun gives light and heat to the earth. 00:11:49.220 --> 00:11:50.600 He is the image of God. word was with God and the word was God. 00:12:05.820 --> 00:12:13.580 Paul proceeds to describe Jesus as the firstborn, the prototokos, firstborn. 00:12:13.580 --> 00:12:25.180 And while this phrase certainly can mean chronologically first in a family, it refers primarily to position or to rank. 00:12:25.879 --> 00:12:35.139 From the Arians of the early church to the Jehovah's Witnesses of our day, those who seek to repudiate the deity of Jesus Christ refer to this phrase. 00:12:35.420 --> 00:12:36.460 So prepare yourself. 00:12:36.900 --> 00:12:41.540 You'll have these kinds of 00:13:11.539 --> 00:13:16.379 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. 00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:21.379 Jesus is where all that can be known or experienced of God is to be found. 00:13:22.100 --> 00:13:26.879 This is why Jesus was able to say in John 14, verse 9, 00:13:27.419 --> 00:13:32.340 Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. 00:13:32.340 --> 00:13:39.500 Beloved, we have such a blessed gift in knowing Christ our Lord. 00:13:39.960 --> 00:13:44.500 He is God and he is preeminent because he is God. 00:13:45.500 --> 00:13:50.660 Secondly, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is the Lord of the universe. 00:13:50.660 --> 00:13:52.920 Verse 16 says, 00:13:52.919 --> 00:14:20.839 Jesus Christ is preeminent, supreme, more excellent as the creator of all things.
