hallowed be your name. 00:00:22.179 --> 00:00:33.840 So, our text this morning again, once again, is Matthew chapter 6, verse 9 and verse 10, with an emphasis on verse 10. 00:00:34.899 --> 00:00:43.939 In order for us to gain the broader context of Jesus' teaching on prayer, we're going to read, though, a larger portion of Matthew 6. 00:00:44.060 --> 00:00:48.500 I'll begin in verse 5 understand that not all prayer is the same. 00:02:41.020 --> 00:02:44.360 Many pray to gods that are not gods at all. 00:02:44.740 --> 00:02:54.319 And it is very possible, even very plausible, to pray to the right God, but to pray wrongly. 00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:01.959 I then showed you that the Scripture has much to say about prayers offered in vain. 00:03:02.280 --> 00:03:07.699 In fact, I gave you 12 examples, which I don't think was exhaustive at all. 00:03:08.459 --> 00:03:11.180 But here's a few of them, such as, 00:03:11.759 --> 00:03:18.199 God does not answer the prayer of those who have personal and selfish motives. 00:03:18.199 --> 00:03:21.419 James chapter 4 and verse 3, James writes, 00:03:21.539 --> 00:03:28.000 You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to 00:03:52.840 So we must be concerned about praying to the right God, 00:03:52.959 --> 00:03:57.000 but also praying to the right God rightly. 00:03:57.799 --> 00:04:00.199 I would encourage you, if you weren't here last week, 00:04:00.280 --> 00:04:07.639 to go and listen to those other things the Scripture has to say concerning wrong prayer. 00:04:07.639 --> 00:04:14.939 So a careful consideration of how we ought to pray is of great importance for us. 00:04:16.019 --> 00:04:23.240 In this text, Jesus is modeling a pattern for us to pray by. 00:04:24.259 --> 00:04:27.039 Note that He does not say, pray this. 00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:31.680 He says, pray then like this. 00:04:32.159 --> 00:04:33.639 He's showing us. 00:04:33.639 --> 00:04:39.339 He's informing us about how our prayers should be formed. 00:04:39.659 --> 00:04:42.860 What should be motivating our praying. 00:04:44.279 --> 00:04:46.979 And He begins, our first point last week, 00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:51.620 was saying, pray this way. 00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:53.919 Our Father in Heaven. 00:04:54.099 --> 00:04:55.639 So we should pray like Jesus. 00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:58.839 Our Father in Heaven. 00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:07.319 Jesus tells us that our prayers should begin with the recognition that God is our Father. 00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:12.239 And so this becomes the beginning point for God to hear our prayers and to answer our prayers 00:05:12.239 --> 00:05:15.059 is that He is in fact our Father. 00:05:15.719 --> 00:05:20.239 That you have been adopted into His family by grace alone, 00:05:20.539 --> 00:05:21.759 through faith alone, 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:23.259 in Christ alone. 00:05:23.259 --> 00:05:30.219 That you have seen that there's no amount of labor on your part in keeping the laws. 00:05:30.959 --> 00:05:36.560 Previously sung songs stated so well that could ever have earned us a place in God's family. 00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:40.680 But rather because of the perfect Son. Him. 00:06:35.180 --> 00:06:40.180 This is a profound title to utter to God in our prayers. 00:06:40.180 --> 00:06:45.519 And it is the absolute basis for our confidence in approaching Him. to do this lest we become too chummy 00:06:58.139 --> 00:07:03.500 with the One who created heaven and earth and all that is in them. 00:07:03.500 --> 00:07:08.720 We're meant to remember who this us this morning, 00:07:59.640 --> 00:08:02.980 Jesus has been talking about private prayer. 00:08:04.020 --> 00:08:07.340 So I think He means for us in the opening of our praying 00:08:07.340 --> 00:08:10.660 to recognize that God has saved a people. 00:08:11.460 --> 00:08:12.920 He has a people. 00:08:13.379 --> 00:08:15.660 And we collectively have a Father. 00:08:15.819 --> 00:08:18.379
