in which we live, we see widespread and seemingly unbridled rebellion. 00:05:50.860 --> 00:05:57.539 All we have to do to see this rebellion locally is tune into our favorite TV, radio, or social media outlet. 00:05:58.620 --> 00:06:04.899 This is a rebellion that spans all cultural and political vantage points. 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:10.399 I'm not making any judgment about any of the things necessarily that happened this past week. 00:06:10.399 --> 00:06:15.139 There is just a widespread rebellion in our world. 00:06:16.359 --> 00:06:20.299 What is the Christian meant to think of such things? 00:06:21.060 --> 00:06:26.339 How are we to bear up when everything seems to be falling apart around us? 00:06:27.539 --> 00:06:37.159 Psalm 2 speaks into our world concerning its rebellion and tells us that God is powerfully at work to end this world's rebellion. 00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:44.820 The uprising that began with Adam and Eve will not be allowed to persist forever. 00:06:46.120 --> 00:06:50.640 For those not in Christ, this is terrible news. 00:06:51.320 --> 00:06:56.240 Your rebellion, if you're not in Christ, will not go unpunished. 00:06:56.500 --> 00:06:59.140 It will be put to an end. 00:06:59.139 --> 00:07:05.979 For those found in Christ, Psalm 2 is a psalm of hope and encouragement. 00:07:06.659 --> 00:07:09.139 I hope that it will be the latter for you today. 00:07:30.360 Number one, the world rebels. 00:07:31.360 --> 00:07:34.260 Psalm 2 begins with a rhetorical question. 00:07:34.620 --> 00:07:37.300 I imagine the psalmist frustrated. 00:07:38.120 --> 00:07:40.600 He's hand-palming, right? 00:07:40.640 --> 00:07:41.660 He's shaking his head. 00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:45.040 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 00:07:46.020 --> 00:07:49.480 Do they not understand who it is they're rebelling against? 00:07:49.480 --> 00:07:53.500 What a fruitless, pointless thing for them to do. 00:07:54.300 --> 00:08:00.180 He has noticed that the world over, people have a rebellion problem. 00:08:01.200 --> 00:08:03.580 And he continues in disbelief. 00:08:03.780 --> 00:08:05.780 The kings of the earth set themselves. 00:08:06.080 --> burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us. 00:08:19.479 --> 00:08:28.500 The nations, the peoples, the kings, and the rulers of the earth do not want to be placed under any authority. that we seem to be living in now. 00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:42.759 People want to be unbound, to go their own way. 00:08:42.759 --> 00:08:49.080 And the psalmist tells us that all the peoples of the world are rebelling against who? 00:08:49.779 --> 00:08:50.340 Us? 00:08:51.220 --> 00:08:55.299 No, the Lord, and against his anointed. 00:08:55.799 --> 00:09:02.379 It's much more egregious than a rebellion against what we might think or believe. 00:09:02.379 --> 00:09:09.620 They do not want to be placed under the authority of God and Jesus Christ. 00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:15.480 Now, the early church understood Jesus to be the anointed of Psalm 2. 00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:18.439 So quickly, let me show you that that's the case. 00:09:18.779 --> 00:09:24.840 Listen to the response of the church to the news that Peter and John had been arrested and released in Acts chapter 4. 00:09:24.939 --> 00:09:27.000 This is verse 24 and following. 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.960 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, 00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:33.980 Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:39.179 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit. 00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:40.820 And then here's Psalm 2, right? 00:09:40.860 --> 00:09:47.179 Being excited in their prayer in response to Peter and John's arrest and release. 00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:48.039 This is verse 25. 00:09:48.379 --> 00:09:52.960 Why did the Gentiles rage and the people's plot in vain? 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:59.160 And the kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed. 00:10:00.120 --> 00:10:01.019 And then verse God and his Christ did not end with the persecution of the early church. 00:10:25.099 --> 00:10:27.559 It is not over. 00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:35.319 Much of the New Testament is written to Christians who were suffering because the world was rebelling against God and his Christ. 00:10:36.099 --> 00:10:41.039 We as Americans have somehow thought that we're exempt from this, American Christians, 00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:44.860 as if we live in Jerusalem and not in Babylon. 00:10:44.860 --> 00:10:53.580 Near the end of his reign, the Roman emperor Diocletian set up two massive pillars in Spain declaring victory over Jesus Christ. 00:10:54.320 --> 00:10:56.300 The inscription on the pillars read, 00:10:57.240 --> 00:10:59.680 forgive me for this horrible butchering of this guy's name. 00:11:00.600 --> 00:11:01.980 I'm sure he won't mind. 00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:03.600 Diocletian, Jovian. 00:11:03.960 --> 00:11:05.519 Maximilian, Hercules. 00:11:05.960 --> 00:11:07.480 Caesarius, Augusti. 00:11:08.019 --> 00:11:08.779 Something like that. 00:11:08.779 --> 00:11:17.279 For having adopted Gallerius in the East, for having everywhere abolished the superstition of Christ, 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:21.439 for having extended the worship of the gods. 00:11:22.100 --> 00:11:23.980 This is beyond the early church day. 00:11:24.100 --> 00:11:29.819 And this rebellion against God and his Christ continues to this very day. 00:11:30.360 --> 00:11:32.759 We can witness it all around us in many forms. 00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:37.700 And we should make no mistake that it is rebellion against God and his Christ. 00:11:37.919 --> 00:11:40.679 It is of the highest offense. 00:11:41.779 --> 00:11:43.639 And so, as God's people, 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:51.879 it's reasonable --> 00:12:19.459 The apostles had been arrested. 00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:21.199 This is the council calling them in. 00:12:21.539 --> 00:12:25.919 They beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus and let them go. 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:31.000 Then, they left the presence of the council, 00:12:31.500 --> 00:12:34.059 went to a basement and started a blog. 00:12:37.579 --> 00:12:38.519 What did they do? 00:12:38.679 --> 00:12:44.439 They were rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. 00:12:45.319 --> 00:12:47.860 And every day in the temple and from house to house, 00:12:47.939 --> 00:12:52.839 they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus. 00:12:52.840 --> 00:12:56.139 So, this is the rebellion of the world.
