00:02:02.699 Now, question as we begin, is meekness, just another word, for weakness? 00:02:02.700 --> 00:02:10.420 Let me take you to the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. 00:02:11.199 --> 00:02:15.060 He wrote a now famous book called The Cost of Discipleship. 00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:21.480 So he was writing and teaching in the late 1930s in a seminary in Germany, 00:02:21.479 --> 00:02:24.899 training pastors for the confessing church. 00:02:24.899 --> 00:02:33.159 And many of those pastors, along with Bonhoeffer, would courageously oppose Hitler and the Nazi regime. 00:02:34.479 --> 00:02:36.659 Bonhoeffer was not meek. 00:02:37.579 --> 00:02:39.859 But here is what he says on meekness. 00:02:39.860 --> 00:02:46.100 He said, those who now possess the earth by violence and injustice shall lose it. 00:02:47.220 --> 00:02:52.300 And those who here have utterly renounced it, utterly renounced the world, 00:02:52.500 --> 00:02:58.460 who were meek to the point of the cross, shall rule the new earth. 00:03:00.300 --> 00:03:07.040 Here is Bonhoeffer encouraging these pastors to give up their rights. 00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:11.739 Not assert my rights. 00:03:12.739 --> 00:03:20.639 To pursue future inheritance rather than looking for the comfort and security of seeking everything now. 00:03:22.299 --> 00:03:24.280 Isn't this such a different message? 00:03:25.019 --> 00:03:27.239 Isn't this counter-cultural? 00:03:28.699 --> 00:03:34.799 But to be honest, isn't this profoundly challenging to our mindset and behaviour? 00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:43.780 We live here today in a secular society where most people think in terms of a closed system. 00:03:44.439 --> 00:03:46.360 Where all we see is all there is. 00:03:46.660 --> 00:03:47.980 So all we have is now. 00:03:48.980 --> 00:03:51.100 Therefore, we should grab what we can. 00:03:51.500 --> 00:03:54.680 We should drive for our personal goals. 00:03:54.680 --> 00:03:59.840 Now, of course, we need to recognise ambition can be good. 00:04:00.480 --> 00:04:05.939 When that ambition is to glorify God and when it is to serve others and to be for others. 00:04:06.480 --> 00:04:09.680 But ambition can also become misdirected. 00:04:11.020 --> 00:04:16.720 And it can be turned inward so that we're concerned with self-glory and pride. 00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:20.980 And we can be profoundly selfish in our ambitions. 00:04:20.980 --> 00:04:32.520 And in a society and in a way of thinking where that dominates, meekness, as described by Bonhoeffer, as described by Jesus, may appear as weakness. 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:38.839 And to be the one person who doesn't want to step on others to get ahead. 00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:48.019 And to be the one person who, on social media, doesn't want to going on typically. 00:04:56.939 --> 00:05:04.759 Martin Lloyd-Jones, he said that Christians should be an enigma to the world. 00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:06.660 A puzzle to the world. 00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:09.180 What's with the church? 00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:12.779 What's with these values that they pursue? 00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:17.319 So we're going to think about the value of meekness. 00:05:17.319 --> 00:05:20.699 And recognise, as we do, that we follow Jesus. 00:05:21.319 --> 00:05:24.980 Who the one time, in the Gospels, he describes his own heart. 00:05:24.980 --> 00:05:28.460 He describes himself as gentle and lowly. 00:05:29.300 --> 00:05:31.000 Humble and meek. 00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:38.080 Jesus is this powerful combination of complete power as God the Son. 00:05:38.900 --> 00:05:42.439 But also this gentle, patient love. 00:05:43.640 --> 00:05:45.500 Meekness is not weakness. 00:05:46.020 --> 00:05:47.080 As I hope we'll see. 00:05:48.020 --> 00:05:52.040 Three questions for us to think about together. 00:05:52.040 --> 00:05:56.420 First question, simply, what is meekness? 00:05:58.160 --> 00:06:01.500 We'll use one negative example from the Bible and two 00:06:09.420 We go here often. 00:06:09.520 --> 00:06:10.800 What do we know about Adam and Eve? 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:13.259 They were made in God's image. 00:06:13.259 --> 00:06:19.699 They were made with glory and dignity to rule as stewards over God's creation. 00:06:19.920 --> 00:06:22.159 So to rule the earth under God. 00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:26.620 And they were living in paradise in that setting. 00:06:27.039 --> 00:06:31.920 But Adam and Eve did not bow in meekness. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:33.779 Or they did not continue in that state. 00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:39.759 Rather, tempted by the devil, the snake, they tried to seize rule for themselves. 00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:42.879 And they discovered that kind of pride was not gain but loss. 00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:44.560 Sin certainly means we don't assert my rights over God as we saw in the garden. 00:07:26.460 --> 00:07:27.640 Now to our psalm. 00:07:28.260 --> 00:07:31.980 And the positive example of King David in Psalm 37. 00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:35.200 And as we said, Jesus likely has this psalm in mind. 00:07:35.700 --> 00:07:40.780 Now maybe as we read this together, you would have heard a repeating pattern three times. 00:07:41.680 --> 00:07:43.760 It says do not fret or do not fear. 00:07:44.440 --> 00:07:46.220 And each time the focus is similar. 00:07:46.220 --> 00:07:51.940 Do not fear the apparent progress or the apparent success of the evil and the wicked. 00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:56.760 Don't fret those who seem to be getting ahead while they live without God. 00:07:57.140 --> 00:07:57.440 Why? 00:07:58.880 --> 00:08:01.260 Because in the end they will fade away. 00:08:02.140 --> 00:08:04.620 And in the end they will face the judgment of God. 00:08:05.680 --> 00:08:10.140 And instead, David encourages a particular mindset. 00:08:10.139 --> 00:08:16.519 So in verse 3, instead of fretting and fearing, trust in the Lord and do good. 00:08:17.979 --> 00:08:22.419 Verse 4, delight in the Lord 00:11:07.419 --> 00:11:10.899 To give his life as a ransom for many. 00:11:11.580 --> 00:11:14.740 To save proud rebels like us. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:17.259 To give us new hearts. 00:11:18.180 --> 00:11:21.220 That would humble ourselves before our God and King. 00:11:21.860 --> 00:11:29.299 So meekness is a life patterned on Jesus the second Adam. 00:11:29.299 --> 00:11:33.000 Jesus the greater king than David. 00:11:36.319 --> 00:11:38.059 Following on from that. 00:11:38.979 --> 00:11:42.579 What are some of the marks of meekness? 00:11:43.159 --> 00:11:47.019 Let's try and think in a concrete way here. 00:11:48.179 --> 00:11:50.719 John Stott in his book Christian Counterculture. 00:11:51.699 --> 00:11:55.779 He recognises a flow to the first three beatitudes. 00:11:55.779 --> 00:12:01.019 That if we recognise that spiritually we are poor and banged up. 00:12:01.079 --> 00:12:03.919 That we are entirely reliant on God for mercy. 00:12:04.259 --> 00:12:08.439 If we mourn our sins such that we take it to Jesus for forgiveness. 00:12:08.860 --> 00:12:11.620 Then we'll have a true self-assessment. 00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:12.699 So we won't be proud. 00:12:12.799 --> 00:12:14.860 We'll naturally be meek. 00:12:16.600 --> 00:12:19.480 Before our holy and perfect God. 00:12:19.480 --> 00:12:27.480 But with the result that we will not be so defensive and protective how does this kind of meekness show up in our lives? 00:12:56.259 --> 00:13:02.360 Where does its light shine over and against the backdrop of pride and self-confidence? 00:13:03.460 --> 00:13:10.279 And here in part I'm drawing from a book written by a pastor scholar by the name of Terry Johnson on the Beatitudes. 00:13:10.279 --> 00:13:13.000 Which is one of the many helpful books that are out there. 00:13:13.720 --> 00:13:15.319 He makes four observations. 00:13:15.559 --> 00:13:19.100 First of all, the meek are teachable. 00:13:20.600 --> 00:13:24.220 Let me read from James chapter 1 verse 21. 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:26.159 Where James says, 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:31.620 Get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent. 00:13:32.500 --> 00:13:39.379 And humbly accept the word planted in you which can save you. 00:13:40.279 --> 00:13:47.939 In humbly accepting the correction of God's word, we will get rid of moral filth. 00:13:48.879 --> 00:13:52.139 Meek people are ready to listen to others. 00:13:52.679 --> 00:13:54.779 Are ready to receive correction. 00:13:55.159 --> 00:14:00.620 Especially to submit to the correction that comes from God's word. 00:14:00.839 --> 00:14:05.000 Whether it's as we're reading the Bible in our private devotions. 00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:09.019 Whether it's hearing the Bible as it's read and taught in church. 00:14:09.019 --> 00:14:16.240 Or whether it's as it's brought to us from a Christian friend lovingly helping to show us truth. 00:14:17.500 --> 00:14:18.879 So we're not defensive. 00:14:19.679 --> 00:14:21.360 We're not sulking. 00:14:22.019 --> 00:14:23.899 We're not fighting back. 00:14:26.120 --> 00:14:28.240 Where we can honestly say, 00:14:28.659 --> 00:14:31.840 I know there are many areas in which I fail. 00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:37.080 So it's natural and necessary that I receive correction. 00:14:39.660 --> 00:14:42.940 Honestly, this is something that I find difficult. Brothers and sisters, 00:15:19.779 --> 00:15:21.939 If someone is caught in a sin, 00:15:23.019 --> 00:15:24.939 You who live by the Spirit 00:15:24.939 --> 00:15:29.139 Should restore that person gently. 00:15:29.139 --> 00:15:29.939 Gently. 00:15:30.960 --> 00:15:34.600 So we have a responsibility to our brothers and sisters in Christ 00:15:34.600 --> 00:15:37.220 Towards loving correction 00:16:29.620 --> 00:16:33.799 To think the best of someone. 00:16:33.799 --> 00:16:36.440 Even when they show you your worst. 00:16:37.240 --> 00:16:45.019 And how different that is to the trial by social media that we see so prevalent. 00:16:45.019 --> 00:16:48.340 People that we don't know. 00:16:49.240 --> 00:16:53.579 Background stories that we have no inclination what's going on. 00:16:53.639 --> 00:17:00.059 But we can be so quick to pile in with harsh words and pronounce judgment. 00:17:00.059 --> 00:17:03.939 As Christians we need to avoid that. 00:17:03.939 --> 00:17:06.779 We need to avoid cancel culture. 00:17:07.740 --> 00:17:14.000 Again so quick to pounce on the mistake of a celebrity or a politician or a friend. 00:17:15.039 --> 00:17:17.059 And to in the left and the right hand of Jesus when he came to reign as king in his kingdom. 00:18:47.839 --> 00:18:50.880 And Jesus said this to them and to his listening disciples. 00:18:51.339 --> 00:18:55.220 Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. 00:18:55.220 --> 00:19:00.220 And whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 00:19:00.220 --> 00:19:05.660 For even the son of man did not come to be served but to serve. 00:19:06.860 --> 00:19:10.279 And to give his life as a ransom for many. 00:19:10.279 --> 00:19:14.279 The meek are not living for themselves.
