And he speaks a word that reorients the disoriented and encourages the discouraged. 00:04:19.660 --> 00:04:23.680 I'm going to point you to five words in this passage. 00:04:25.200 --> 00:04:26.020 Five words. 00:04:27.620 --> 00:04:32.700 Suffering, church, mystery, mature, rejoicing. 00:04:32.699 --> 00:04:36.779 And in those five words, Paul's making a case. 00:04:36.779 --> 00:04:38.639 And it goes something like this. 00:04:40.039 --> 00:04:47.000 We suffer together for Christ so that others would treasure Christ. 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:54.740 And if you want to reduce it to just four words, Christ is worth it. 00:04:56.379 --> 00:04:59.079 So let's look at this first word, suffering. 00:05:01.399 --> 00:05:06.259 Now up until this point, Paul has thanked God for what God is doing among the Colossians. 00:05:06.339 --> 00:05:07.899 That's chapter 1, verses 3 through 8. 00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:13.720 Paul has prayed that these Colossians would grow in their understanding of God's will. 00:05:13.720 --> 00:05:14.900 What's God's will for your life? 00:05:14.960 --> 00:05:16.320 To please Christ in everything. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:25.720 In chapter 1, verses 15 through 20, Paul portrays this magnificent Christ. 00:05:26.380 --> 00:05:29.480 The firstborn of all creation and the firstborn from the dead. 00:05:29.560 --> 00:05:31.140 He's the king of all. 00:05:34.140 --> 00:05:39.120 Verses 21 through 23, he assures these Colossian Christians that they belong to this king. 00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:46.079 And here in verses 24 through chapter 2, verse 5, Paul shares says, I toil. 00:06:17.060 --> 00:06:17.700 I struggle. 00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:21.740 This ministry of proclaiming Christ is contested. 00:06:22.940 --> 00:06:28.900 In 2.1, he tells these Colossian church, he wants them to know how great a struggle he has for them. 00:06:28.899 --> 00:06:34.259 And then in 2.5, he says this, for though I am absent in body. 00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:36.239 What is that all about? 00:06:38.179 --> 00:06:38.859 Where's Paul? 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:40.199 Have you seen those Werewoldo books? 00:06:40.659 --> 00:06:41.399 Where's Paul? 00:06:43.139 --> 00:06:44.039 He's in Rome. 00:06:46.039 --> 00:06:48.579 He's writing to a church in Colossae. 00:06:49.159 --> 00:06:50.179 They're far apart. 00:06:50.439 --> 00:06:51.399 What's he doing in Rome? 00:06:51.679 --> 00:06:53.459 He is suffering in Rome. 00:06:54.139 --> 00:06:55.079 What is he suffering? 00:06:55.179 --> 00:06:57.819 Turn to the end of Colossians, chapter 4, verse 18. 00:06:57.819 --> 00:07:02.259 And he says something, and he's not trying to be a drama queen. 00:07:02.399 --> 00:07:04.000 He's not trying to be dramatic. 00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:07.540 He says, I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. 00:07:07.779 --> 00:07:08.939 Remember my chains. 00:07:12.740 --> 00:07:16.159 Why is he suffering in Rome? 00:07:16.360 --> 00:07:23.759 Why is he under house arrest, chained to Praetorian guard, and waiting to hear whether he's going to live or die? 00:07:24.019 --> 00:07:26.480 Well, you could say it's because of Christ. 00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:26.759 Christ. 00:07:27.819 --> 00:07:38.420 Did you notice that interesting verse, that line, I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's affliction for the sake of his body, that is church? 00:07:38.420 --> 00:07:43.740 Here's what Paul's not saying. 00:07:45.080 --> 00:07:54.500 Paul's not saying here that somehow the suffering and death of Jesus Christ was somehow inadequate to accomplish our 00:08:49.799 What is this that he's filling up? 00:08:49.799 --> 00:08:54.159 Do you all remember what happened in Acts chapter 9? 00:08:55.459 --> 00:08:58.939 Paul's on his way to Damascus to shred some Christians there. 00:09:00.319 --> 00:09:02.139 The risen Christ meets him on the way. 00:09:03.819 --> 00:09:05.939 Paul is converted on the spot. 00:09:05.940 --> 00:09:10.400 And then this guy named Ananias kind of houses Paul. 00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:12.800 Jesus, the risen Christ, shows up to Ananias. 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:15.060 And he has some words with Ananias. 00:09:15.180 --> 00:09:18.080 And then he says this to Ananias about Paul. 00:09:19.460 --> 00:09:21.060 For I will show him. 00:09:21.160 --> 00:09:27.260 I, the risen Christ, will show him, Paul, how much he must suffer for the sake of my name. 00:09:28.300 --> 00:09:29.140 Do you know what that is? 00:09:29.760 --> 00:09:32.980 That's a suffering quota put on Paul. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:35.380 You're going Christ for you so that you, Colossians, would treasure Christ above all else. 00:10:14.599 --> 00:10:20.719 Suffering is necessary to the spreading of the gospel to all people everywhere. 00:10:20.720 00:10:53.019 What Paul is doing here is he's writing these Colossians and he's saying, we're all in this together. 00:10:54.759 --> 00:10:56.019 We suffer together. 00:10:56.019 --> 00:11:02.279 If you look at chapter 1, verse 11, do you remember this verse from a couple weeks ago? 00:11:02.439 --> 00:11:07.000 Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for all endurance and patience with joy. 00:11:07.059 --> 00:11:08.720 Do you know what that's about? 00:11:10.139 --> 00:11:14.059 That's an enduring and being patient with joy in the midst of suffering. 00:11:15.199 --> 00:11:16.519 Hardship, discouragement. 00:11:18.199 --> 00:11:19.379 Here's what Paul is doing. 00:11:19.799 --> 00:11:22.600 He is normalizing suffering for us. 00:11:22.600 --> 00:11:28.120 Did you know that 2 Timothy 3.12 is in your Bible, Christian? 00:11:29.600 --> 00:11:36.440 Indeed, if anyone would live a godly life in Christ Jesus, he will suffer. 00:11:40.220 --> 00:11:45.300 The question is, is Christ worth it? 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:50.139 Church, we suffer together for Christ 00:11:50.139 --> 00:11:56.080 so that Christ would be treasured by others. 00:11:57.580 --> 00:11:59.279 Let's look at the second word, church. 00:12:02.620 --> 00:12:04.699 In verse 24, Paul says, 00:12:04.779 --> 00:12:08.439 I'm filling up what is lacking in Christ's affliction for the sake of his body. 00:12:08.519 --> 00:12:09.559 That is the church. 00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:13.500 Don't miss the connection. 00:12:13.500 --> 00:12:15.559 The apostle Paul is saying, 00:12:15.980 --> 00:12:19.720 the body of Christ is the church of Christ. 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:20.879 They're one and the same. 00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:25.120 The body of Christ is a metaphor for God's people 00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:26.360 and it's one of Paul's favorites. 00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:28.759 We've already seen it in verse 18 of chapter 1 00:12:28.759 --> 00:12:30.779 and he is the head of the body of the church. 00:12:31.740 --> 00:12:33.980 It shows up in chapter 2 in verse 19, 00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:38.039 but he's actually speaking about false teachers in this context. 00:12:38.039 --> 00:12:43.059 He's saying that they're not a part of the body of Christ. 00:12:44.039 --> 00:12:45.039 And here's what he says. 00:12:46.679 --> 00:12:48.259 And not these false teachers, 00:12:48.379 --> 00:12:49.759 they're not holding fast to the head 00:12:49.759 --> 00:12:52.559 from whom the whole body nourished and knit together 00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:54.679 through its joints and ligaments 00:12:54.679 --> 00:12:56.959 grows with a growth that is from God. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:12:58.480 It's a picture of the body. 00:12:59.860 --> 00:13:01.220 That little phrase, 00:13:02.340 -->
