--> 00:06:03.500 and both of them are waiting for the promises of God to be fulfilled. 00:06:04.159 --> 00:06:06.779 And they're going to do something quite amazing in our passage. 00:06:07.299 --> if you want to sum up the first two chapters of Luke, 00:06:27.020 --> 00:06:30.480 it would be the arrival of Jesus into the world 00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:33.100 and the fulfillment of those promises. 00:06:33.620 --> 00:06:34.819 And we're going to meet up with Jesus 00:06:34.819 --> 00:06:40.240 as they make the five-mile trip from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:43.980 Take a look and then wait another 33 days 00:07:39.899 --> 00:07:42.480 to present him to the Lord and offer sacrifices. 00:07:43.220 --> 00:07:45.620 In addition, as Jesus was the firstborn child, 00:07:46.500 --> 00:07:48.279 he would be presented to the Lord 00:07:48.279 --> 00:07:51.699 for all the firstborn of all livestock and people 00:07:51.699 --> 00:07:52.959 belong to the Lord. 00:07:54.120 --> 00:07:55.519 What we can take from this is that 00:07:55.519 --> 00:07:57.680 Luke is very keen to emphasize 00:07:57.680 --> 00:08:02.660 that Jesus' parents fulfilled the law of the Lord. 00:08:02.660 --> 00:08:05.240 And if we're unsure as to what that's what he wanted, 00:08:05.760 --> 00:08:07.680 take a look at verse 27. 00:08:08.380 --> 00:08:08.880 He says, 00:08:09.640 --> 00:08:10.420 In the middle of it, 00:08:10.540 --> 00:08:12.280 when the parents brought in the child 00:08:12.280 --> 00:08:16.120 to do for him what the custom of the law required, 00:08:16.640 --> 00:08:19.300 Luke was keen to make sure that we knew 00:08:19.300 --> 00:08:22.040 that Jesus' parents had followed the law. 00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:23.700 And in case we missed it, 00:08:24.060 --> 00:08:27.280 take a look at verse 39 and 40. 00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:30.039 Verse 39, 00:08:30.179 --> 00:08:32.600 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required 00:08:32.600 --> 00:08:33.720 by 00:09:00.519 Here we're going to meet Simeon 00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:03.120 who's been faithfully waiting for God's promises. 00:09:03.800 --> 00:09:06.200 Note what Luke says about Simeon. was upon him. 00:10:12.279 --> 00:10:13.419 Verse 26, 00:10:13.419 --> 00:10:16.799 He had a revelation of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:17.559 --> 00:10:18.519 And verse 27, 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:20.459 Moved by the Spirit, 00:10:20.599 --> 00:10:21.939 he went into the temple courts. 00:10:22.299 --> 00:10:24.799 Here was a man with the Holy Spirit was upon him. 00:10:25.399 --> 00:10:26.819 He had Israel. 00:10:44.120 --> 00:10:47.500 And that word waiting is in the sense of waiting for something 00:10:47.500 --> 00:10:49.159 that he is looking forward to, 00:10:49.240 --> 00:10:50.000 something favorable. 00:10:50.500 --> 00:10:51.799 We can wait for many things, 00:10:52.139 --> 00:10:55.139 but often we can wait for things that might cause us anxiety 00:10:55.139 --> 00:10:56.279 or stress, 00:10:56.360 --> 00:10:58.079 something that we really don't want to happen. 00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:01.700 But Simeon was waiting for something that he was looking ahead to. 00:11:01.700 --> 00:11:05.580 And what he was waiting for was the consolation of Israel. 00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:08.879 You might have picked it up from one of the songs we sang just now. 00:11:09.560 --> 00:11:10.639 Consolation of Israel. 00:11:10.820 --> 00:11:11.700 What was that? 00:11:12.840 --> 00:11:14.180 Well, the word consolation, 00:11:14.300 --> 00:11:16.020 we might use the word comfort. 00:11:16.019 --> 00:11:18.079 And the actual meaning of that, 00:11:18.179 --> 00:11:22.139 the Greek word meaning for it is paraklesis, 00:11:22.360 --> 00:11:25.039 to call near or to draw alongside. 00:11:25.819 --> 00:11:27.860 We can understand that concept of comfort, 00:11:28.199 --> 00:11:28.639 can't we? 00:11:29.159 --> 00:11:32.279 When we are anxious or when things aren't going well in our lives, 00:11:32.379 --> 00:11:37.799 when we need something or someone to help us through whatever we're going through, 00:11:38.120 --> 00:11:39.659 we want to call them near, 00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:40.139 don't we? 00:11:40.139 --> 00:11:43.960 We want someone or something to draw alongside, 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:47.399 to help us through so that we are comforted. 00:11:50.120 --> 00:11:52.379 Simeon was obviously looking for comfort. 00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:54.899 Think about who Simeon was in the time he lived in. 00:11:55.379 --> 00:11:56.600 Simeon was an Israelite. 00:11:57.500 --> 00:12:00.080 The Israelites were a people blessed by God. 00:12:00.159 --> 00:12:02.919 They'd been given great promises of God. 00:12:03.419 --> 00:12:04.960 They were told that they would be blessed. 00:12:05.220 --> 00:12:07.240 They would become numerous people, 00:12:07.240 --> 00:12:09.700 that God would be their God. 00:12:11.139 --> 00:12:12.759 But the Israelites sinned, didn't they? 00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:14.679 And if you read the history of Israel, 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:17.639 you will see that time and time again, 00:12:18.100 --> 00:12:18.840 they sinned. 00:12:19.179 --> 00:12:20.439 They disobeyed God. 00:12:20.639 --> 00:12:22.699 They turned their backs on God. 00:12:23.620 --> 00:12:25.360 God had sent them into exile. 00:12:25.539 --> 00:12:26.360 He had brought them back. 00:12:26.759 --> 00:12:29.059 But that relationship was broken. 00:12:29.299 --> 00:12:32.559 Their sin was separating them from God. 00:12:33.879 --> 00:12:36.100 When Simeon is looking for consolation of Israel, 00:12:36.100 --> 00:12:37.360 he's looking for comfort. 00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:39.299 But he's not looking for comfort, 00:12:39.299 --> 00:12:40.139 thinking, 00:12:40.339 --> 00:12:40.579 yes, 00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:43.299 surely God is going to do this because God is good. 00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:47.319 He could rely on promises that were in God's word. 00:12:48.319 --> 00:12:49.799 He was righteous and devout. 00:12:50.259 --> 00:12:51.120 He was in the temple. 00:12:51.319 --> 00:12:53.099 He'd have heard the scriptures being read out. 00:12:53.620 --> 00:12:55.879 Listen to these words from Isaiah, 00:12:56.059 --> 00:12:56.919 chapter 40, 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:57.659 1 and 2. 00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:01.299 It echoes that comfort that Simeon is looking for. 00:13:01.299 --> 00:13:02.259 They read, 00:13:02.620 --> 00:13:05.399 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 00:13:05.859 --> 00:13:10.579 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, 00:13:11.159 --> 00:13:12.979 that her sin had been paid for, 00:13:13.299 --> 00:13:17.359 that she has received double from the Lord's hand for her sins. 00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:22.560 God was calling for comfort for his people. 00:13:24.220 --> 00:13:26.620 Isaiah was talking to them before they went into exile. 00:13:27.139 --> 00:13:27.779 And in a sense, 00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:29.940 that promise was partially fulfilled. 00:13:30.060 --> 00:13:30.820 They'd come back. 00:13:30.919 --> 00:13:32.340 They were partially comforted. 00:13:32.820 --> 00:13:34.180 But they didn't have full comfort. 00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:35.899 And people like Simeon, 00:13:36.039 --> 00:13:36.800 people like others, 00:13:36.800 --> 00:13:39.300 were waiting for comfort to come into the world. 00:13:39.299 --> 00:13:45.139 But Simeon wasn't the only one who was looking for comfort. 00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:46.419 Take a look at Anna, 00:13:46.599 --> 00:13:47.599 verse 36. 00:13:48.439 --> 00:13:50.599 Anna was described as a prophetess. 00:13:51.059 --> 00:13:52.399 And she was very old. 00:13:52.519 --> 00:13:55.359 And she lived in the temple night and day, 00:13:55.899 --> 00:13:56.819 fasting and praying. 00:13:57.099 --> 00:14:00.620 Another servant of God who was totally dedicated to the Lord. 00:14:01.179 --> 00:14:03.019 Coming up to them at that very moment, 00:14:03.019 --> 00:14:04.599 she gave thanks to God 00:14:04.599 --> 00:14:09.019 and spoke about the child to all who were through the Old Testament 00:14:27.179 --> 00:14:31.079 and look at all of the promises of God, 00:14:31.419 --> 00:14:32.299 of a Messiah, 00:14:32.299 --> 00:14:34.459 of a comforter to come into the world. 00:14:35.500 --> 00:14:37.519 As a teacher of Sunday school, 00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:39.759 a great privilege each week 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:41.840 to teach the children about Jesus. 00:14:42.279 --> 00:14:43.279 For the last year and a half, 00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:45.340 we have been going through the Old Testament. 00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:48.840 And it's been amazing to see the connection 00:14:48.840 --> 00:14:50.819 in the Old Testament to Jesus 00:14:50.819 --> 00:14:54.620 as we see promises of a Messiah to come, 00:14:54.939 --> 00:14:55.639 a comforter, 00:14:56.079 --> 00:14:57.379 someone to console. 00:14:57.379 --> 00:15:00.980 And we are about to see those promises 00:15:00.980 --> 00:15:03.139 to be fulfilled. 00:15:05.100 --> 00:15:07.200 But Simeon had a special promise as well, 00:15:07.259 --> 00:15:07.620 didn't he? 00:15:07.720 --> 00:15:09.840 Even though all of these people were waiting for Jesus, 00:15:10.439 --> 00:15:13.360 Simeon had a special one of the Holy Spirit. 00:15:13.580 --> 00:15:14.759 Look at verse 26. 00:15:15.419 --> 00:15:17.500 He was promised that it had been 00:15:17.500 --> 00:15:19.480 that he would not see death 00:15:19.480 --> 00:15:22.879 until he had seen the Lord's Christ, 00:15:23.379 --> 00:15:24.039 or the Messiah. 00:15:24.039 --> 00:15:25.779 He had this special promise. 00:15:26.219 --> 00:15:27.620 So can you imagine, Simeon, 00:15:28.539 --> 00:15:29.819 the expectation he had 00:15:29.819 --> 00:15:31.500 that every morning he woke up, 00:15:32.399 --> 00:15:33.219 he was still alive, 00:15:33.559 --> 00:15:35.259 meaning he didn't see the Lord's Christ, 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:36.620 and he was about to. 00:15:38.199 --> 00:15:39.980 And we see that this very day reach to the ends of the earth. 00:21:22.860 --> 00:21:25.380 Isaiah was talking about a servant of the Lord. 00:21:25.580 --> 00:21:27.120 People didn't know who the servant was. 00:21:27.360 --> 00:23:31.320 They even were coming up with plans to kill him. 00:23:32.920 --> 00:23:34.940 Isaiah was prophesying to Mary that, 00:23:35.259 --> 00:23:36.880 yes, this is going to happen to your son. 00:23:37.279 --> 00:23:39.380 Listen to these words again from Isaiah. 00:23:39.519 --> 00:23:42.740 Let's look forward to this servant that would come. 00:23:42.740 --> 00:23:45.240 Isaiah 53, verse new mother. 00:24:35.960 --> 00:24:38.019 She had a newborn baby in front of her, 00:24:38.600 --> 00:24:39.740 and yet Simeon was saying, 00:24:39.980 --> 00:24:42.200 A sword will pierce your soul too. 00:24:43.080 --> 00:24:44.519 Jesus was no ordinary baby, 00:24:44.680 --> 00:24:46.160 and Mary, when it comes down to it, 00:24:46.160 --> 00:24:48.180 was no ordinary mother. 00:24:49.660 --> 00:24:51.100 Mary would suffer also. 00:24:51.240 --> 00:24:52.660 She would see the rejection 00:24:52.660 --> 00:24:54.360 and the suffering of her son. 00:24:54.359 --> 00:24:59.199 We see Mary and Jesus together in Jerusalem here, 00:24:59.899 --> 00:25:01.919 and just over 30 years after this, 00:25:02.119 --> 00:25:03.859 we see them again in Jerusalem, don't we? 00:25:04.500 --> 00:25:05.500 But this time, 00:25:05.839 --> 00:25:07.919 Jesus will be hanging on a cross 00:25:07.919 --> 00:25:10.439 for your sins and my sins, 00:25:10.839 --> 00:25:11.979 and Mary will be watching. 00:25:12.459 --> 00:25:14.599 Look at how John describes it. 00:25:15.199 --> 00:25:18.779 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother. 00:25:20.439 --> 00:25:22.659 Mary was going to live to see her son 00:26:12.980 --> 00:26:14.300 The hint is in his name, 00:26:14.700 --> 00:26:18.180 to save his people from their sins. 00:26:18.180 --> 00:26:23.240 But note what else Simeon says. 00:26:23.759 --> 00:28:48.039 we can trust that God fulfills his promises. 00:28:48.720 --> 00:28:50.580 He made promises to his people. 00:28:51.740 --> 00:28:54.259 Simeon, Anna, and others were faithfully waiting
