offices of the Messiah. 00:00:59.500 --> 00:01:06.299 And these offices, all throughout the Old Testament, for someone to serve in one of these offices, prophet, priest, or king, they were anointed. And all throughout the Old Testament, we see prophets who are anointed, consecrated, set apart in order to speak on behalf of God to the people. 00:01:41.359 --> 00:02:11.340 Here's what you need to appointed by God to speak for God to the people. 00:03:47.720 --> 00:03:54.320 And there are basically five points, five boxes to check when it comes to being a prophet. 00:03:54.319 --> 00:03:56.579 First, prophets were set apart by God. 00:03:57.259 --> 00:03:58.519 We see that in Jeremiah. 00:03:58.739 --> 00:04:00.879 He was set apart in his mother's womb. 00:04:01.259 --> 00:04:03.280 Isaiah, Isaiah 6 was set apart. 00:04:03.479 --> 00:04:05.419 Ezekiel and Ezekiel 1 was set apart. 00:04:06.439 --> 00:04:09.039 So you've got to be set apart by God. 00:04:09.620 --> 00:04:12.879 Second, you've got to be sent by God. 00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:17.560 Not only are you set apart, you're sent by God to go speak to a people. 00:04:18.339 --> 00:04:21.719 Isaiah 6, remember that ends with God saying from the throne, 00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:24.020 who shall go for us, whom shall we send? 00:04:24.440 --> 00:04:26.860 Isaiah's like, here I am, send me. 00:04:27.740 --> 00:04:28.100 Sent. 00:04:29.760 --> 00:04:31.660 Ezekiel 2, Ezekiel sent. 00:04:32.320 --> 00:04:33.980 Jonah, the naughty prophet. 00:04:34.480 --> 00:04:36.360 God sought to send him. 00:04:36.440 --> 00:04:39.060 He's like, no way, I'm going the other direction from Nineveh. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.060 He had a change of mind in the belly of the whale. 00:04:42.420 --> 00:04:43.020 Changed everything. 00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:47.900 When God sends someone, they eventually get sent. 00:04:47.899 --> 00:04:56.560 But maybe the third box to check is that which stands out about a prophet. 00:04:56.839 --> 00:04:59.959 They speak on behalf of God. 00:05:00.479 --> 00:05:05.899 All throughout the Old Testament, prophets preface what they say with, 00:05:07.259 --> 00:05:09.379 thus says the Lord. 00:05:09.379 --> 00:05:18.699 The holy God of the universe speaks through sinful, limited men to declare his will. 00:05:21.699 --> 00:05:22.819 They speak. 00:05:23.139 --> 00:05:27.839 And what we see is that a prophet will both foretell, 00:05:28.439 --> 00:05:31.540 which means they will speak of something of what's going to happen in the future. 00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:34.079 The judgment of God is to come. 00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:36.920 Jerusalem will fall. 00:05:36.920 --> 00:05:40.960 But they also foretell. 00:05:41.620 --> 00:05:44.699 They call God's people to immediate response. 00:05:45.840 --> 00:05:47.340 In light of who God is. 00:05:48.720 --> 00:05:49.840 Live this way now. 00:05:50.740 --> 00:05:53.580 Which brings me to the fourth box to check. 00:05:54.680 --> 00:05:58.240 What marks a prophet is the actual words they speak. 00:05:59.500 --> 00:06:00.540 They're God's words. 00:06:02.220 --> 00:06:04.980 They are sanctifying words. 00:06:04.980 --> 00:06:11.060 It's the words the prophet speaks that God is speaking through these sinful men. 00:06:11.180 --> 00:06:18.800 These very words are intended to call a sinful people back into a covenant relationship with their God 00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:22.720 so that they walk in holiness to be holy for I am holy. 00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:25.420 All throughout the prophets. 00:06:25.700 --> 00:06:27.760 Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea. 00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:35.520 We see God calling his covenant people an unfaithful whore of a people. 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:38.780 And these prophets appeal to them. 00:06:38.880 --> 00:06:40.260 They say, come back to your God. 00:06:40.680 --> 00:06:42.400 Come back to your faithful husband. 00:06:42.840 --> 00:06:43.340 Come back. 00:06:43.500 --> 00:06:43.840 Come back. 00:06:43.840 --> 00:06:45.840 They're sanctifying words. 00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:49.060 Mark's a prophet. 00:06:49.859 --> 00:06:53.439 And the fifth and final mark of a prophet is that they suffered for it. 00:06:55.919 --> 00:06:58.839 Jeremiah spent a long time in a cistern. 00:07:01.159 --> 00:07:03.179 It's said of Isaiah that he was sawn in two. 00:07:03.180 --> 00:07:11.040 The profile of a prophet is that they're set apart, sent from God, speak on behalf of God. 00:07:11.139 --> 00:07:16.600 They speak sanctifying words to reconcile people to God and they suffer for what they say. 00:07:16.680 --> 00:07:20.220 So the question is, does Jesus check the boxes? 00:07:22.680 --> 00:07:23.120 Oh yeah. 00:07:24.259 --> 00:07:25.439 How's Jesus set apart? 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:32.480 Well, do you know anybody else that is conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of a virgin? 00:07:34.980 --> 00:07:36.139 That sets him apart. 00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:44.259 And then if you fast forward to Matthew 4, the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus as a dove. 00:07:44.699 --> 00:07:47.199 It is his anointing for ministry. 00:07:49.220 --> 00:07:50.139 He's set apart. 00:07:50.879 --> 00:07:54.639 And then Jesus is sent for God so loved the world that he gave. 00:07:54.639 --> 00:07:56.860 He sent his only begotten son.
