00:05:02.439 --> 00:05:03.960 Put your trust in God. 00:05:03.960 --> 00:05:08.100 And you will have everything you need now and for eternity. 00:05:08.100 --> 00:05:16.200 The three points that we'll be talking about this morning are going to be treasure, trust, and the kingdom of God. 00:05:18.860 --> 00:05:27.300 So in this first part of this passage, you'll know that we have a dispute over inheritance. 00:05:27.520 --> 00:05:32.439 Now, I don't know how many people here have been involved with a family dispute over an inheritance. 00:05:32.780 --> 00:05:35.320 There's a lot of young people out there, so I'm guessing not many. 00:05:35.319 --> 00:05:44.000 But you can imagine that with all the emotions and with all this history and the desire to want what's fair, 00:05:44.899 --> 00:05:54.360 that going through dealing with how to disperse an inheritance after someone dies can get a little difficult. 00:05:55.219 --> 00:06:01.620 It's been known to split families up, even cause siblings to not talk to each other for many years. 00:06:01.620 --> 00:06:05.219 And that's what we have about to happen at the beginning of this passage. 00:06:05.319 --> 00:06:07.139 This man comes up to Jesus and says, 00:06:07.740 --> 00:06:12.959 I want you to intervene and tell my brother to give me what is owed me for my inheritance. 00:06:13.639 --> 00:06:18.980 Now, we don't find out whether or not what he's asking for is fair. 00:06:19.139 --> 00:06:21.180 He just wants Jesus to get it for him. 00:06:22.319 --> 00:06:28.300 And we also see that it isn't that Jesus doesn't care about what this man is getting or not getting. 00:06:28.300 --> 00:06:33.300 But Jesus doesn't want to get pulled down into the details of what's taking place. 00:06:33.939 --> 00:06:40.240 He is concerned, however, about a larger issue that's going on, and he wants to warn those around him. 00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:43.420 So he tells the man, who am I to judge you? 00:06:44.180 --> 00:06:47.620 Which is rather ironic coming from Jesus, the King of Kings. 00:06:47.980 --> 00:06:51.480 But again, he doesn't want to, at this time, he's not here to judge. 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:53.580 He doesn't want to get involved with the details. 00:06:53.780 --> 00:06:56.259 But he wants to say an important thing. 00:06:56.680 --> 00:06:58.060 And that's what we're going to get into. 00:06:59.220 --> 00:07:04.180 Now, I will warn you that the first part of this message, the first point, is the longest of the three. 00:07:04.700 --> 00:07:05.840 It's also the heaviest. 00:07:05.839 --> 00:07:12.219 So depending on where you are in life, what your possessions look like, you may struggle a little bit more. 00:07:12.279 --> 00:07:14.699 It might be a little heavy for you. 00:07:15.459 --> 00:07:21.879 But the reason for this is because there's a seriousness and a weight that Jesus is bringing to this passage. 00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:26.919 And so he wants us to feel the dangers that can is that you will be corrected in those areas where Jesus wants to correct you. 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:46.240 But you will be comforted by the promises and the blessings that we have from being wants to warn you about them. 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:24.259 So the first part of our passage this morning deals with treasure. 00:08:24.259 --> 00:08:26.000 Where is your treasure? 00:08:27.219 --> 00:08:30.839 And are you desiring to be rich on earth or rich toward God? 00:08:30.980 --> 00:08:32.580 Let's take a look at verse 15. 00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:40.039 And Jesus, he, Jesus, said to them, notice he turns from the man and turns to the crowd to say this. 00:08:40.100 --> 00:08:44.340 He says, take care and be on your guard against all covetousness. 00:08:44.580 --> 00:08:48.759 For one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. 00:08:48.759 --> 00:08:57.240 A person's life does not consist, that is, is not made up of the abundance of his possessions. 00:08:58.819 --> 00:09:07.659 Now, it can also, as you read this, it also means that not just for those who have an abundance of possessions, 00:09:07.799 --> 00:09:10.819 but those who have possessions, whether a lot or a little. 00:09:10.820 --> 00:09:17.340 So the important point here is that this is not a parable for rich people only. 00:09:17.920 --> 00:09:23.460 It's a parable about a rich man, but it's a parable for the rich and the poor and anyone in between. 00:09:23.460 --> 00:09:36.900 Jesus wants us to know that our life is not defined by, cannot be preserved or protected by our stuff, our 00:13:43.679 We have that freedom, but with bad decisions come bad results. 00:13:43.679 --> 00:13:52.699 We also know that we can make other bad decisions, not just about stuff that will affect our --> 00:14:20.179 That's not what I'm talking about when I say God gives you things in your life. 00:14:20.299 --> 00:14:24.239 He does give you those things, but some of the bad ones we choose for And he says in verse 18, 00:16:01.939 --> 00:16:05.359 I know, I'll tear down the barns that I have, and I'll build bigger ones. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:07.500 That's where I can put all my stuff. prepared, whose will they be? 00:17:06.680 --> 00:17:17.140 In the Old Testament, when the word fool was used, it meant someone who either acts without God or without wisdom about potential destruction. 00:17:17.660 --> 00:17:18.580 That's a fool. 00:17:19.840 --> 00:17:24.779 Let me first say, there's nothing wrong with being a farmer who is prosperous. 00:17:24.779 --> 00:17:33.700 There's nothing wrong with anyone in any occupation, assuming that it's lawful, being prosperous and doing well. 00:17:33.899 --> 00:17:37.579 Those are signs of God's favor and blessing on that 00:20:08.420 The fool is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. 00:20:08.600 --> 00:20:17.420 So, if we want to avoid being a fool, then we lay up treasure in heaven and
