about how to face evil times, hard times. 00:00:22.339 --> 00:00:28.780 There might be evil times on an international scale or a national scale, they might be in 00:00:28.780 --> 00:00:34.679 fact quite personal evil times when they hit us and everything kind of comes crashing 00:00:34.679 --> 00:00:35.840 down in our world. 00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:39.000 How do we stand in that moment? 00:00:39.160 --> 00:00:45.320 And this book is here to help us be prepared for when those times come as they will for 00:00:45.320 --> 00:00:48.920 all of us at some point and as they had for Habakkuk 00:00:58.780 --> 00:01:03.660 In Judah, which is being perpetrated by God's own people. 00:01:04.359 --> 00:01:08.640 And he wants to know why God seems to be okay with it, why God's not doing anything about 00:01:08.640 --> 00:01:09.079 this. 00:01:09.859 --> 00:01:11.939 And these are God's covenant people. 00:01:12.579 --> 00:01:22.620 And so for Habakkuk, he would be concluding that God's promises, which was to bless all 00:01:22.620 --> 00:01:27.680 the nations are not going to be fulfilled because God's people are corrupt here. 00:01:27.820 --> 00:01:31.719 And he wants to see God's glory displayed to the end of the earth. 00:01:32.240 --> 00:01:35.160 And it's not happening because God's people are corrupt. 00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:41.439 And God's response to Habakkuk came back really quickly and said, yes, I see the injustice. 00:01:41.700 --> 00:01:43.400 I see the corruption. 00:01:43.719 --> 00:01:44.980 It really bothers me too. 00:01:44.980 --> 00:01:49.000 And I do have a plan to fix it. 00:01:49.500 --> 00:01:51.700 But if I told you the plan, you wouldn't understand the plan. 00:01:52.920 --> 00:01:56.180 And Habakkuk says, oh, come on, you know, tell me the plan, you know, please, please, please, 00:01:56.219 --> 00:01:56.500 please, please. 00:01:56.920 --> 00:01:58.439 And God says, okay, here it is. 00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:07.080 What I'm going to do is I'm going to use the evil, ruthless, merciless schoolyard bullies, 00:02:07.079 --> 00:02:11.199 the Babylonians to come on in and to wipe out Judah. 00:02:11.439 --> 00:02:11.979 That's what I'm going to do. 00:02:12.039 --> 00:02:12.879 They're going to judge them. 00:02:12.939 --> 00:02:15.159 I'm going to use the Babylonians to judge Judah. 00:02:15.379 --> 00:02:17.780 And Habakkuk is like, what? 00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:19.800 You're kidding me. 00:02:19.939 --> 00:02:29.079 How can such a wicked people be used by you to execute your judgment on people who are less 00:02:29.079 --> 00:02:30.079 wicked than them? 00:02:30.219 --> 00:02:31.360 That makes no sense. 00:02:31.360 --> 00:02:39.720 And so all of a sudden, Habakkuk's complaint about the injustice and evil that he sees over 00:02:39.720 --> 00:02:44.040 there, it gets quite personal for him, because what he realizes is that when the Babylonians 00:02:44.040 --> 00:02:49.320 come to town, they're not just going to pick out, you know, the bad people. 00:02:49.440 --> 00:02:50.700 They're going to take on everyone. 00:02:51.600 --> 00:02:57.800 And so Habakkuk realizes that means that he is going to get caught up in God's judgment 00:02:57.800 --> 00:02:59.080 on those people over there. 00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:01.460 It makes no sense to him. 00:03:02.360 --> 00:03:03.960 And you can kind of understand it. 00:03:04.960 --> 00:03:06.480 Some of you might remember this. 00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:14.280 Malcolm Naden was the most wanted person in New South Wales up until his captured arrest 00:03:14.280 --> 00:03:15.780 in 2012. 00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:24.580 He was on the run from June 2005 to March 2012 when he was finally captured in his little 00:03:24.580 --> 00:03:28.300 remote cabin way out in the middle of nowhere past Gloucester. 00:03:29.080 --> 00:03:35.700 Now, imagine you were one of the people and he'd existed in all this forest area for some 00:03:35.700 --> 00:03:36.020 time. 00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:37.880 And I'm trying to pin him down where he was. 00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:44.460 And in the time he was there, he was stealing from farmers and all that kind of stuff. 00:03:44.460 --> 00:03:50.240 Now, imagine you're one of the farmers who's got a property out there somewhere between Gloucester 00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:54.500 and Armidale and you know this guy's wandering around. 00:03:54.620 --> 00:03:56.020 You want him caught. 00:03:56.480 --> 00:03:57.540 No doubt about it. 00:03:57.620 --> 00:03:59.879 You want this guy to be brought to justice. 00:04:00.040 --> 00:04:03.140 He's stolen from you and stolen from a bunch of your mates. 00:04:03.139 --> 00:04:08.159 And then all of a sudden you hear that New South Wales police have come up with a new plan 00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:11.839 to finally get Malcolm Naden. 00:04:12.099 --> 00:04:21.759 And that is we are calling in Donald Trump to do a missile strike everywhere from Kempsey 00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:26.879 West to Armidale down south to Gloucester. 00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:30.019 Just blanket the whole area with nuclear missiles. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:36.339 And you go, well, it has its strengths, that plan. 00:04:36.339 --> 00:04:45.060 You know, you finally get the guy who's embarrassed you by escaping from you seven times in the 00:04:45.060 --> 00:04:45.519 past. 00:04:47.159 --> 00:04:49.039 Feral animals is a problem in that area. 00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:50.599 So you get rid of all the feral animals. 00:04:50.819 --> 00:04:51.359 That's good. 00:04:52.039 --> 00:04:58.639 There's a whole lot of other cash crops that are not quite legal yet in this country. 00:04:58.859 --> 00:05:02.699 And you'd kind of wipe them out and all the hippies that are planting them as well. 00:05:02.699 --> 00:05:09.719 And so you kind of, you know, you solve a bunch of problems, but you also destroy everything, 00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:13.639 including me, the person who wants justice being done. 00:05:13.719 --> 00:05:15.000 And I'm getting caught up in it. 00:05:15.939 --> 00:05:21.459 And this appears to be God's strategy to deal with the injustices and the corruption of his 00:05:21.459 --> 00:05:22.740 people in Judah. 00:05:23.899 --> 00:05:27.180 And so Habakkuk now has a second complaint. 00:05:27.959 --> 00:05:30.519 And his second complaint is bigger than his first complaint. 00:05:30.519 --> 00:05:34.079 And he states it in verse 13 of chapter one. 00:05:34.599 --> 00:05:40.719 Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves? 00:05:41.899 --> 00:05:48.199 And then in verse 17, a couple of verses later, he's got another question about the Babylonians. 00:05:48.199 --> 00:05:59.979 And he says, is he to keep and emptying his nest, destroying nations without mercy? 00:06:01.579 --> 00:06:04.560 Is he just going to keep going? 00:06:04.680 --> 00:06:10.699 Babylon just going to get away with it consistently and just keep destroying everything? 00:06:12.579 --> 00:06:15.000 In other words, Habakkuk saying, what about the Babylonians then? 00:06:15.699 --> 00:06:16.599 You're going to judge Judah. 00:06:16.600 --> 00:06:17.520 What about the Babylonians? 00:06:17.540 --> 00:06:18.600 Are they just going to get away with it? 00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:21.640 And God says, no, you've got to be patient. 00:06:22.640 --> 00:06:27.640 I'm going to deal with the Babylonians, but it's not ultimately going to happen in your time. 00:06:28.400 --> 00:06:33.340 And so in verses six to 20, which is where we're up to today, is God's answer. 00:06:33.420 --> 00:06:34.840 And there's three things we want to look at. 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:38.700 God judges all sin and evil, the source of all sin and evil. 00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:42.200 And thirdly, God's solution to our sin and evil. 00:06:42.199 --> 00:06:46.219 So firstly, God judges all sin and evil. 00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:56.699 What you see in verses six to 20 is, or six to 18 especially, is Babylon is mocked as an empire. 00:06:56.980 --> 00:07:05.079 It is mocked in five separate statements of woe, curses, five curses that have come upon Babylon. 00:07:05.079 --> 00:07:11.919 And even though Babylon in its time looked invincible, certainly in Habakkuk's time, it looked invincible. 00:07:12.560 --> 00:07:22.879 God would ultimately bring Babylon to nothing in 539 BC when the Medes and the Persians came in and destroyed Babylon. 00:07:22.879 --> 00:07:37.240 Now, each of these five woes that you see in these verses details the crimes that are perpetrated by Babylon and God's response to those crimes. 00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:40.519 And so we'll have a look at the first one, verses six to eight. 00:07:40.620 --> 00:07:45.219 Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion. 00:07:45.620 --> 00:07:47.399 How long must this go on? 00:07:47.939 --> 00:07:50.360 Will not your creditors suddenly arise? 00:07:50.360 --> 00:07:54.060 Will they not wake up and make you tremble? 00:07:54.680 --> 00:07:57.720 Then you will become their prey. 00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:00.040 Because you have plundered many nations. 00:08:00.180 --> 00:08:02.920 The peoples who are left will plunder you. 00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:05.620 For you have shed human blood. 00:08:06.040 --> 00:08:09.800 You have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them. 00:08:11.080 --> 00:08:14.280 So this is directed to Babylon's practice. 00:08:14.280 --> 00:08:20.240 In fact, it would be directed to anyone who have acquired goods dishonestly. 00:08:21.220 --> 00:08:24.939 And what happens to those who acquire their goods dishonestly? 00:08:25.060 --> 00:08:26.240 It says here, the tables are turned. 00:08:27.580 --> 00:08:31.400 The victims become the victor. 00:08:32.600 --> 00:08:35.100 And notice especially verse eight. 00:08:35.100 --> 00:08:43.300 Because you have plundered many nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. 00:08:43.299 --> 00:08:56.719 And so what God does here is he relays to Habakkuk the very basic principles of his justice. 00:08:57.719 --> 00:09:03.359 And that is the punishment always fits the crime. 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:07.180 The punishment always fits the crime. 00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:15.779 And a little bit later in this section, it talks about God's justice coming around in circles. 00:09:15.779 --> 00:09:20.600 The punishment fits the crime. 00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:25.179 And you see the pattern right through these five woes. 00:09:25.179 --> 00:09:31.639 So in verses nine to eleven, we have the plotter who exploits for personal gain. 00:09:32.019 --> 00:09:37.139 And he does it so that he might gain things for himself or gain things for his nation or for his royal household. 00:09:37.139 --> 00:09:45.460 It's a direct attack on the Babylonian empire and the rulers of the Babylonian empire. 00:09:46.460 --> 00:09:52.559 And what this is about in verses nine to eleven is about the pursuit of glory. 00:09:53.699 --> 00:09:59.460 They are doing everything in order to bring glory to themselves. 00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:00.480 They destroy nations. 00:10:00.580 --> 00:10:01.259 They shed blood. 00:10:01.259 --> 00:10:06.919 They plunder and pillage in order to clothe themselves in glory. 00:10:08.659 --> 00:10:09.980 And what's their punishment? 00:10:10.960 --> 00:10:15.659 Verse 10 says that they will have shame instead of glory. 00:10:16.919 --> 00:10:20.740 Then in verses 12 to 13 is the promoter of violence. 00:10:20.860 --> 00:10:26.139 The foundation of Babylonian society was the blood of their enemies. 00:10:26.539 --> 00:10:28.480 And their punishment is in verse 13. 00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:34.560 Has not the Lord Almighty determined that the people's labor is only fuel for the fire? 00:10:35.820 --> 00:10:40.659 They were building an empire by destroying other empires. 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:47.420 And God says you are building an empire which is just simply going to be firewood for my fire. 00:10:47.419 --> 00:10:58.099 In fact, James 5.5 in the New Testament speaks of rich oppressors who have fattened themselves up for the day of slaughter. 00:11:00.819 --> 00:11:02.439 The punishment fits the crime. 00:11:03.079 --> 00:11:04.759 Again, verse 15. 00:11:04.759 --> 00:11:13.319 We have the immoral woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wine skin till they are drunk so that he can gaze on their naked bodies. 00:11:13.939 --> 00:11:18.139 You will be filled with shame instead of glory. 00:11:19.879 --> 00:11:20.899 Now it's your turn. 00:11:21.799 --> 00:11:24.399 Drink and let your nakedness be exposed. 00:11:24.600 --> 00:11:29.279 The cup from the Lord's right hand is coming around to you. 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:33.740 And disgrace will cover your glory. 00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:43.419 In other words, what they did is they puffed themselves up with glory by bringing shame to everyone else. 00:11:44.100 --> 00:11:47.220 They made themselves feel better by putting down everyone else. 00:11:48.059 --> 00:11:52.179 And instead of glory, they received shame themselves. 00:11:53.039 --> 00:11:56.159 And the last woe is in verses 18 to 20. 00:11:56.159 --> 00:11:57.839 It refers to the idolater. 00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:05.879 And idolatry, according to the Bible, is when we worship something that is less than us and certainly less than God. 00:12:06.219 --> 00:12:08.059 It's not just something that's less than God. 00:12:08.179 --> 00:12:10.159 It's something that is less than us. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:12.860 It's speechless. 00:12:13.319 --> 00:12:14.219 It's powerless. 00:12:14.539 --> 00:12:15.819 And therefore, it is useless. 00:12:15.980 --> 00:12:22.939 And these Babylonians, they created idols to give them wisdom and guidance. 00:12:22.940 --> 00:12:27.760 And their punishment, when the time comes, when they need it, it says here, silence. 00:12:28.520 --> 00:12:29.400 No help. 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:38.840 What you notice through here is that the punishment fits the crime. 00:12:38.840 --> 00:12:53.920 And it's by that principle alone that both God's people, Judah, and the Babylonians will be judged by the same principle. 00:12:55.340 --> 00:12:56.700 God is committed to justice. 00:12:57.240 --> 00:12:59.660 The wicked are not going to get away with their evil. 00:13:00.259 --> 00:13:02.980 God is going to hold them accountable for their actions. 00:13:02.980 --> 00:13:06.220 And he will punish them accordingly. 00:13:08.840 --> 00:13:10.480 So that's good news for Habakkuk. 00:13:13.620 --> 00:13:18.300 But secondly, let's look at what the real issue here is. 00:13:18.680 --> 00:13:20.879 I've kind of alluded to it a number of times. 00:13:21.480 --> 00:13:25.620 But what's the real issue here for the Babylonians? 00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:26.820 What is their source? 00:13:26.940 --> 00:13:29.720 What is the sin which is beneath the sin for them? 00:13:29.720 --> 00:13:33.320 Because the sin is they've gone bloodshed, they've gone and plundered and pillaged. 00:13:33.399 --> 00:13:37.620 But what's the real driving thing that's underneath all of that? 00:13:38.899 --> 00:13:45.980 And I think it's really essential for us to get to this point because it is so easy for us to sit back at this point and go, 00:13:46.540 --> 00:13:48.560 Ah, Babylonians, absolutely. 00:13:49.019 --> 00:13:53.259 I mean, ruthless suckers, awful people. 00:13:53.259 --> 00:13:59.620 And frankly, they got what they deserved in 539 BC, if that's when you told me they were around. 00:13:59.939 --> 00:14:01.019 And that's when they got destroyed. 00:14:01.319 --> 00:14:03.639 And they got exactly what they deserved. 00:14:03.720 --> 00:14:05.259 But I would never do these things. 00:14:05.399 --> 00:14:07.620 I would never do the stuff that's talked about looked at this last week. 00:14:32.259 --> 00:14:33.120 James showed us this. 00:14:33.539 --> 00:14:37.419 It is inflating yourself. 00:14:38.720 --> 00:14:45.519 It is having an inflated view of yourself, puffing yourself up that others might glory in you. 00:14:45.519 --> 00:14:50.179 It goes on in verse 5, straight after. 00:14:50.460 --> 00:14:59.840 It says that he, Babylon, is arrogant, never at rest, because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied. 00:15:01.179 --> 00:15:06.659 He gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the people. 00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:08.639 That's what it means to be puffed up. 00:15:08.639 --> 00:15:20.019 Greedy, never at rest, constantly dissatisfied and gathering all things for my glory. 00:15:20.600 --> 00:15:26.399 In Babylon's case, they wiped out people for their own magnificence. 00:15:27.879 --> 00:15:31.980 And at the center, they're proud, they're arrogant, and they are empty. 00:15:31.980 --> 00:15:33.920 They gather in the nations themselves. 00:15:34.039 --> 00:15:36.039 They conquer, they kill for their own glory. 00:15:36.139 --> 00:15:43.220 They are, in fact, what they're doing here is they are using and abusing people for their own promotion. 00:15:45.539 --> 00:15:51.200 And I wish that I had more time to unpack how we all do that. 00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:55.480 Maybe in a the heart of the evil Babylonian culture, at the heart of every culture, and at the heart of every life, 00:16:19.699 --> 00:16:31.179 is arrogance, pride, that leads to a life of pursuing personal 00:16:50.379 You know, the self-aggrandizement, the promotion, that sort of stuff. 00:16:50.879 --> 00:16:56.459 And I suspect that few, and I know this is not a, but here's a good example. each morning in order to hear him crow. 00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:17.860 This guy roared on about how he was the greatest. 00:17:18.420 --> 00:17:24.960 He bragged consistently about his good looks, and he declared that nothing was impossible for him. 00:17:26.460 --> 00:17:34.740 And, in fact, he was bragged about himself until, ultimately, Parkinson's took away his ability to speak. 00:17:37.900 00:19:17.980 is because we are to a great degree insecure and trying to cover ourselves with honor and glory. 00:19:17.980 --> 00:19:26.960 The great tennis player, Chris Ebbett, was in one year, and she was a great tennis player, 00:19:27.039 --> 00:19:35.620 but she said in one interview that the driving force behind her playing tennis and her passion to win 00:19:35.620 --> 00:19:39.740 was that when I won, I felt beautiful. 00:19:39.740 --> 00:19:47.480 And in one way or another, that's us. 00:19:48.720 --> 00:19:52.440 I grew up being a fern for my practical skills. 00:19:52.539 --> And there are those here who are waiting for Jesus. 00:31:51.519 --> 00:31:54.380 They're the people that Habakkuk, earlier in chapter 2, 00:31:54.680 --> 00:31:58.460 James talked about those who are waiting patiently by faith. 00:31:58.460 --> 00:32:01.539 But there are also by implication here, 00:32:01.940 --> 00:32:04.579 those who are not waiting patiently by faith. 00:32:06.440 --> 00:32:11.840 The destiny of the proud and the idolatrous who continue to hold God at one end 00:32:11.840 --> 00:32:16.259 and pursue idols, whatever it might be, 00:32:17.500 --> 00:32:21.660 is in the very next chapter in Hebrews 10, verse 26. 00:32:21.660 --> 00:32:22.300 It says, 00:32:22.360 --> 00:32:25.640 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we receive the knowledge of the truth,
