Amen. 00:02:24.179 --> 00:02:31.479 As we prepare to come to the Lord's table tonight, I want us to think for a few minutes about the cups 00:02:31.479 --> 00:02:40.359 of Maundy Thursday. One we read about earlier is, for good reason, the more famous cup. There have been 00:02:40.360 --> 00:02:49.040 movies made about it, lots of talk about it, the cup from the Last Supper, the cup that is the new 00:02:49.040 --> 00:02:55.560 covenant in Jesus' blood that He extends to His disciples. We'll partake of that cup together here 00:02:55.560 --> 00:03:04.900 in a bit. But the passage I just read for us twice refers to another cup, one that is not so pleasant 00:03:04.900 --> 00:03:16.700 to drink. I remember when I was a kid visiting the World Coke Museum in Atlanta. It's a really neat 00:03:16.700 --> 00:03:22.500 place if you've never been. You can learn as you walk through it all sorts of things about the history 00:03:22.500 --> 00:03:30.400 of Coke and bottling and how it was developed. Any tour, though, is not complete without a trip to the 00:03:30.400 --> 00:03:37.560 tasting room. This wonderful tasting room with dozens and dozens of different Coke beverages 00:03:37.560 --> 00:03:46.280 from around the world. All sorts of Coke products. There's Coke, classic the way you know it and love 00:03:46.280 --> 00:03:51.500 it. Diet, of course, and then all of the things you can put in it. I don't even know them all. There's 00:03:51.500 --> 00:03:58.980 cherry and lime and whatever else you want in your Coke, you can try it there. The one that usually gets the most 00:04:03.959 --> 00:04:12.379 discussion and talk from tour groups is an Italian beverage called Beverly. You probably haven't had 00:04:12.379 --> 00:04:20.240 Beverly unless you've been to the World of Coke Museum. It looks like yet one more soda on a range of 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:28.060 sodas from the machines there. I assure you it's not. It should have a different classification all its own. 00:04:28.060 --> 00:04:35.920 I still remember the bitter taste that hits you like a ton of bricks when you drink it. If you've 00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:43.500 never had it, most American mouths are not used to this kind of drink. It is much worse than cough syrup. 00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:52.100 It hits you much more strongly. It is so bitter. Typically what you do if you're like me and if you have 00:04:52.100 --> 00:04:58.100 younger siblings, I'm an oldest child, so I've done this more than once, is that you hide your reaction 00:04:58.100 --> 00:05:03.300 to it when you taste it the first time until you've been able to take a full cup of it over to your 00:05:03.300 --> 00:05:08.060 younger siblings and say, have you had this one yet? You've got to try it. And then you wait to watch 00:05:08.060 --> 00:05:16.280 their reaction as their faces contort, as they yell out or spit it out, and you delight in seeing them 00:05:16.279 --> 00:05:25.219 suffer just a little more than you did a few minutes ago. The contrast between Beverly and the 00:05:25.219 --> 00:05:32.619 many other drinks you've been sampling is quite stark. The sugary sweetness of Coke that has just 00:05:32.619 --> 00:05:39.299 been there on your lips in one cup, and then the bitterness of Beverly in another cup. 00:05:39.300 --> 00:05:47.660 We see a stark contrast like that between the cup of the Lord's Supper and the cup Jesus speaks of in 00:05:47.660 --> 00:05:55.220 this passage. We leave the upper room for a moment on that Thursday evening and go with Jesus and his 00:05:55.220 --> 00:06:02.980 trusted friends to the garden of Gethsemane. And Jesus, overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, 00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:10.939 it says. So distraught at what he's facing that he could die, turns to his father and he prays, 00:06:11.259 --> 00:06:18.300 if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. And then when he prays a second time, if it's not 00:06:18.300 --> 00:06:26.240 possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done. Here's the perfect 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:34.759 Son of God who suffered all sorts of things, now facing a cup that he speaks of, sweating drops of 00:06:34.759 --> 00:06:43.460 blood, sorrowful to the point of death as he contemplates drinking this bitter cup. What could it be that 00:06:43.460 --> 00:06:51.300 would make him feel that way? What makes him wonder at facing this cup that he's about to drink? 00:06:51.300 --> 00:07:00.900 The cup Jesus was contemplating is the cup of God's wrath that he will drink. The cup of suffering 00:07:00.900 --> 00:07:09.660 often referred to in the scriptures. It's the just punishment of God due unto sin. The full weight 00:07:09.660 --> 00:07:17.920 of God's righteous justice poured out on someone. Isaiah 51 describes the effects of this cup being 00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:24.199 poured out on God's people because of their sin. Isaiah says it this way, 00:07:24.259 --> 00:07:29.699 Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath. 00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:37.980 You who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes men stagger. These double calamities have come 00:07:37.980 --> 00:07:45.480 upon you. Who can comfort you? Ruin and destruction, famine and sword. Who can console you? Your sons have 00:07:45.480 --> 00:07:52.360 fainted. They lie at the head of every street like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the 00:07:52.360 --> 00:08:02.819 wrath of the Lord and the rebuke of your God. That's just one description of this cup. The afflicted 00:08:02.819 --> 00:08:10.580 one is the one who drinks it. Made drunk but not with wine. The cup that made you stagger the goblet of 00:08:10.579 --> 00:08:18.300 my wrath as Isaiah describes it. That's why it's often referred to as a cup of suffering. The just 00:08:18.300 --> 00:08:26.259 judgment of a holy God unleashed, poured out beyond what a man can take so that he's drunk but not on 00:08:26.259 --> 00:08:35.179 wine. Staggered, reeling physically, emotionally, spiritually overwhelmed. When you drink the bitter cup, 00:08:35.179 --> 00:08:41.339 you're beyond help. You're beyond help. This passage says no one can console you. You can't deliver 00:08:41.339 --> 00:08:47.519 yourself like an antelope trapped in a net. Do you have that picture in your mind struggling to get 00:08:47.519 --> 00:08:55.259 free and all you do is get more entangled? It's fair to say the wrath of God is the cup that will supply 00:08:55.259 --> 00:09:04.459 the flames of hell forever. The point of all these images is that when the wrath of God is poured out 00:09:04.460 --> 00:09:16.400 upon sin, the results are utterly devastating. And Jesus knows this. Look back at Matthew 26 where 00:09:16.400 --> 00:09:24.160 he's there in the garden. Jesus who has repeatedly told his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem 00:09:24.160 --> 00:09:31.100 because he must suffer and he must die. Now on the night of his betrayal is overwhelmed at the thought 00:09:31.100 --> 00:09:37.100 of drinking the bitter cup. He wonders aloud to his father if there's another way, if there's not 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:44.720 perhaps a different cup from this one. Isn't it poignant how he goes to the father three times? 00:09:45.680 --> 00:09:51.240 Three times to his father as he wrestles with the thought of tasting the father's wrath, the intense 00:09:51.240 --> 00:09:56.160 pain of crucifixion, the utter agony of drinking the cup of God's wrath. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:10:05.699 And yet Jesus chooses to drink the cup, not my will, but yours be done the first time. 00:10:06.100 --> 00:10:12.019 Your will be done. And then the third time, the same thing it says, your will be done. 00:10:12.919 --> 00:10:22.039 He chooses the bitter cup. And the question for us is not so much which cup would we choose, 00:10:22.039 --> 00:10:31.819 but which cup do we deserve? There's actually only one cup within our reach. What does every sin deserve? 00:10:33.399 --> 00:10:40.519 Our kids know. The catechism tells us every sin deserves the wrath and curse of God, both in this 00:10:40.519 --> 00:10:47.740 life and in the life to come. We deserve for all those descriptions of staggering, inconsolable, 00:10:47.740 --> 00:10:56.600 overwhelmed people to be true of us for all eternity.
