00:04:32.659 --> 00:04:33.739 They're back in the land. 00:04:34.419 --> 00:04:36.139 They started rebuilding the temple. 00:04:36.299 --> 00:04:39.699 And then all of a sudden, after a while, they've just kind of gone a bit meh about it. 00:04:39.739 --> 00:04:41.939 Not that fussed about the Lord. 00:04:41.939 --> 00:04:45.259 We're just going to build our own wee houses. 00:04:45.579 --> 00:04:45.680 Right? 00:06:22.379 --> 00:06:25.399 We do our own thing Monday through Saturday. 00:06:25.399 --> 00:06:25.479 Sunday. 00:06:26.120 --> 00:06:28.560 And we do the God thing on Sunday. 00:06:29.419 --> 00:06:31.939 And that's kind of what we do with our days. 00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:34.959 And God is saying to this generation, I'm not having any of it. 00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:41.939 And so through Haggai to people who are gallus, think things are going well. 00:06:42.859 --> 00:06:45.899 God points out two big problems that exist in their day. 00:06:46.759 --> 00:06:52.159 Two big problems that I think we'll realize really will hit home when we examine them. 00:06:52.160 --> 00:06:54.420 So he says two things to this people. 00:06:54.939 --> 00:06:57.220 Firstly, he delivers some home truths about holiness. 00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:04.320 And this really matters because this is all about how you and I today and these people can be right with our creator. 00:07:05.900 --> 00:07:10.080 Because this is all about how we can come into the presence of a holy God. 00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:19.439 Because our sins, we've been thinking in that kids talk there, our sin, our rebellion against him, the fact that we want our way, not his way, it is a big deal. 00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:21.199 It needs to be dealt with. 00:07:21.459 --> 00:07:26.899 Because to come into the presence of a spotlessly holy God, you need to be spotlessly clean. 00:07:28.519 --> 00:07:32.419 And this is almost a textbook example right here of how it doesn't work. 00:07:33.279 --> 00:07:35.279 And so there's two angles on how this doesn't work. 00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:39.319 Firstly, God says stop treating sin superstitiously. 00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:43.259 So what the people are doing, verse 12, if you come with me. 00:07:43.979 --> 00:07:48.839 And it's hard to tell whether this is what they're actually doing or whether this is just the mindset that they're coming with. 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:54.399 Is they're taking consecrated meat from the temple, the altar. 00:07:55.120 --> 00:07:56.860 And they're bringing it home. 00:07:57.219 --> 00:08:02.539 They're placing it on the table and thinking that somehow it transfers its cleanliness to the rest of the house. 00:08:02.680 --> 00:08:05.319 Treating it like some kind of good luck omen. 00:08:07.039 --> 00:08:09.819 Like cleanliness can be passed on to everything it touches. 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:12.039 Now I remember the friend at uni called Soshi. 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:14.560 Soshi was a Muslim girl. 00:08:15.659 --> 00:08:16.319 A great laugh. 00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:22.779 But every time you go into a room, what you'd see in the top shelf of the bookshelf was a copy of the Quran. 00:08:23.839 --> 00:08:26.579 As far as I can tell from what she said, she never read it. 00:08:26.579 --> 00:08:33.539 But it was there because in her mind it almost acted like a good luck omen for the rest of the room. 00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:35.659 Anyone who came in contact with it. 00:08:35.799 --> 00:08:37.179 It transferred its blessing. 00:08:38.139 --> 00:08:40.419 I had no idea, honestly, if that's a thing in Islam. 00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:41.120 I don't know. 00:08:41.199 --> 00:08:42.600 But it was a thing for Soshi. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:44.799 It transferred its blessing. 00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:49.159 And the thing is, Christianity, some of us come at it and we think it's no different. 00:08:50.259 --> 00:08:54.019 Just because we wear a cross around our necks, just because we attend a service, 00:08:54.819 --> 00:08:57.799 just because we read our Bibles and say our prayers, 00:08:58.219 --> 00:09:01.279 doesn't necessarily mean that we're right with God. 00:09:01.359 --> 00:09:03.959 That is not how we get right with the Lord. 00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:09.300 And so God says to this generation, would you stop treating sin superstitiously? 00:11:37.259 --> 00:11:42.200 And the chorus just went, you're beautiful in every single way. 00:11:43.639 --> 00:11:46.100 And the Bible's response to that is, yeah, but no, but. 00:11:47.299 --> 00:11:47.600 Okay. 00:11:48.220 --> 00:11:56.340 Yes, that the worldview of the Bible is that every single human life is a life that's made wonderfully in God's image. 00:11:56.419 --> 00:11:59.700 I think it's just one of the most beautiful things that the Bible says about human beings. 00:12:00.559 --> 00:12:02.419 You do not earn respect and dignity. 00:12:02.779 --> 00:12:05.259 You simply have it because you exist. 00:12:05.259 --> 00:12:13.460 It's what's driven men like Wilberforce people down the generations, Christian people, understanding what this is, what God says about human life. 00:12:13.460 --> 00:12:18.840 And yet, the Bible would say no, because the human heart, we know it's true, isn't it? 00:12:18.860 --> 00:12:20.840 It's a mixture of beauty and beast. 00:12:21.620 --> 00:12:24.620 And we've seen this play out over the last two years. 00:12:25.580 --> 00:12:25.759 Right? 00:12:25.920 --> 00:12:35.840 We are the people who are standing on our doorsteps, clapping for carers one minute, going, banging our drums, hitting our pots and pans, trying to encourage them. 00:12:35.840 --> 00:12:40.700 And yet, we're the generation who are down as to fighting for toilet rule the next. 00:12:40.780 --> 00:12:42.259 I mean, is that not just the human heart? 00:12:43.460 --> 00:12:49.940 Capable of incredible acts of love and yet capable of incredible acts of selfishness. 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:53.500 The Bible says, yeah, but, no, but. 00:12:54.899 --> 00:12:55.600 You know the feeling? 00:12:55.600 --> 00:12:59.800 And this is what I discovered when I first came to know Jesus. 00:13:00.320 --> 00:13:02.620 That feeling of going to a doctor. 00:13:03.879 --> 00:13:09.720 And you don't know what the problem is, but the doctor takes a look and says, that's what the problem is. 00:13:10.159 --> 00:13:11.360 And you think, yes. 00:13:13.980 --> 00:13:19.580 There's a reason why Christians down the years have talked about Jesus as the great physician. 00:13:19.580 --> 00:13:24.120 But this generation, do you see, they do not see their problem. 00:13:25.020 --> 00:13:30.259 And I think the challenge that would come to us today is if any of us are here and we're trying to play God, 00:13:30.379 --> 00:13:35.840 thinking that we can do our own thing during the week, live our own way, and then come in here on a Sunday 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:38.420 and think that we're somehow transferred to his good books. 00:13:38.759 --> 00:13:40.660 We've got to feel the challenge of verse 14. 00:13:40.759 --> 00:13:46.000 What does God say to this generation who are doing the thing, but they're not pursuing it with faith? 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:46.500 What does he say? 00:13:46.500 --> 00:13:51.740 Whatever they do, whatever they offer there, the altar, is defiled. 00:13:52.779 --> 00:13:55.139 So God says, you're not right before me. 00:13:55.460 --> 00:13:57.299 And do you see how he takes them on a history lesson? 00:13:58.600 --> 00:14:03.620 Because I take it these people, if you look at the calendar, I think this is when they expect to bring in the harvest, 00:14:03.799 --> 00:14:05.279 and yet they've got nothing to show for it. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:09.379 And God says, do you remember how a similar thing happened to your ancestors? 00:14:09.860 --> 00:14:12.159 And do you see how it's repeating itself in your day? 00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:13.679 What was its purpose? 00:14:13.679 --> 00:14:14.679 Verse 17. 00:14:16.500 --> 00:14:20.539 What was the purpose of these covenant curses that fell on God's Old Testament people? 00:14:21.139 --> 00:14:23.600 It was to get you to return to me. 00:14:24.320 --> 00:14:30.000 Not just with token gestures of obedience, but to return to me with all of your heart. 00:14:31.220 --> 00:14:36.299 See, this God is after 24-7 holiness from his people. 00:14:36.299 --> 00:14:41.979 I remember, again, as a kid, 24-7 Tesco opened up in our neighborhood. 00:14:42.219 --> 00:14:45.240 Trying to get my head around the fact that that thing never stops. 00:14:46.059 --> 00:14:47.419 It never closes. 00:14:48.479 --> 00:14:49.979 Never has an off day. 00:14:50.219 --> 00:14:51.979 That's what God is saying he wants to these people. 00:14:53.479 --> 00:14:54.659 Or maybe to flip the analogy. 00:14:55.319 --> 00:15:00.719 We have to view our lives not like a house with individual box rooms that all serve a different purpose. 00:15:01.059 --> 00:15:03.139 We have to view our lives as being open plan. 00:15:03.139 --> 00:15:05.759 A whole thing of worship to God. 00:15:07.960 --> 00:15:10.659 And yet, despite all the failures of this generation, 00:15:11.960 --> 00:15:15.639 verse 19, God says, I will bless you. 00:15:16.939 --> 00:15:20.639 My wonderful purposes for you and for the world, 00:15:20.840 --> 00:15:22.360 they're going to come through you, 00:15:22.679 --> 00:15:26.139 are not going to be thwarted because of your disobedience. 00:15:26.139 --> 00:15:29.980 So park that promise for a moment. 00:15:30.399 --> 00:15:32.600 You see, God delivers some home truths about holiness. 00:15:33.399 --> 00:15:35.860 And then he delivers some hard facts about power. 00:15:37.319 --> 00:15:40.679 Verse 20, Haggai speaks again, do you notice, on the same day. 00:15:40.939 --> 00:15:44.460 Which I take it is perhaps why we're meant to view these two little sections together. 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:46.360 But this time, do you notice, 00:15:46.480 --> 00:15:49.100 his words are not addressed to the entirety of the people. 00:15:49.539 --> 00:15:52.340 God's words through Haggai are addressed to one individual. 00:15:52.519 --> 00:15:52.899 Do you see it? 00:15:52.899 --> 00:15:56.000 It's a private sermon to Zerubbabel, 00:15:56.240 --> 00:15:57.860 who at this point in time, 00:15:58.539 --> 00:16:00.039 is the king of Israel. 00:16:01.959 --> 00:16:05.539 And I take it perhaps he too is feeling a little bit gallows. 00:16:06.379 --> 00:16:10.279 I mean, what is not to like about being the guy who's heading up the new project?
