it has a bearing on our lives because first, as I mentioned previously, it's it's our history. 00:06:44.360 --> 00:06:49.180 It's important for us to know the tradition from which we come. 00:06:49.259 --> 00:06:52.819 And of course, we could argue that it traces out before that as well. 00:06:52.819 --> 00:07:00.439 But much of who we are as a people find some of its locus in these --> 00:09:05.759 At the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century, Augustine of Hippo found some occupation refuting the teaching of a man named Pelagius. 00:09:06.800 --> 00:09:19.460 Pelagius and the subsequent teaching known as Pelagianism denied original sin, believed in an autonomous and neutral free will. 00:09:19.460 --> 00:09:23.740 We read a pretty powerful statement against that together earlier. 00:09:24.860 --> 00:09:33.440 The power of sin and the judgment for it have their cause in individual choice rather than inborn sinfulness. 00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:37.800 And people become sinners by following Adam's poor example. 00:09:38.040 --> 00:09:43.240 And they become holy by following Jesus's good example. 00:09:43.900 --> 00:09:48.260 You may hear the lack of of justification. 00:10:56.899 --> 00:11:04.659 So hear that he's saying a person must be perfect to be justified by themselves. 00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:05.099 Perfect. 00:11:05.919 --> 00:11:11.299 He went on to say, quote, but again to the question, can man be justified while sin remains in him? 00:11:11.299 --> 00:11:17.559 Surely he cannot, either upon legal or gospel principles, unless the law
