question that I want us to think about this morning is, what is the king going to find? 00:02:21.780 --> 00:02:23.900 What will the king find? 00:02:24.319 --> 00:02:29.740 So when Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, is he going to find a people who are devoted to him? 00:02:30.180 --> 00:02:33.900 A people who love him and who worship him in spirit and truth? 00:02:34.580 --> 00:02:36.819 Or will he find a construction site? 00:02:37.479 --> 00:02:44.659 Will he find a people who make a whole load of noise, but on the inside, they are spiritually bare and empty? 00:02:45.800 --> 00:02:47.840 What will the king find? 00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:52.039 Now, why do I say that this is the question we're going to think about this morning? 00:02:52.140 --> 00:02:55.780 Who is this king that we're talking about and where is he going to find something? 00:02:56.659 --> 00:03:00.099 Well, let's just have a quick recap of where we've been in Luke's gospel. 00:03:00.780 --> 00:03:10.159 Maybe you remember at the beginning of Luke's gospel, Luke says that he has written an orderly account to Theophilus, a man, a friend of his, 00:03:10.219 --> 00:03:15.699 that he may have certainty about the things that he's been taught concerning Jesus Christ. 00:03:15.699 --> 00:03:24.519 And throughout Luke's gospel, Luke has left us little signposts to help us navigate through this orderly account of the life of Jesus. 00:03:25.280 --> 00:03:28.859 So in Luke chapter 9, verse 51, it says, 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:31.579 And he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 00:03:31.580 --> 00:03:41.080 And then in chapter 13, 22 and 17, 11, there is a phrase which says along the lines of, 00:03:41.160 --> 00:03:43.000 And Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:49.220 So the whole of Luke's gospel has been building up to the moment that we see on the page right in front of us. 00:03:49.700 --> 00:03:54.580 In Luke chapter 19, verse 28, the king arrives in Jerusalem. 00:03:54.580 --> 00:04:01.800 Now this is the beginning of a new section in Luke's gospel and the orderly account of the life of Jesus. 00:04:02.620 --> 00:04:07.500 And it is from Luke chapter 19, verse 28 to 21, verse 30. 00:04:07.580 --> 00:04:11.040 And the big question that we're going to be thinking about over the next few weeks is, 00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:14.480 Will God's people accept God's king? 00:04:14.680 --> 00:04:17.259 Will God's people accept God's king? 00:04:17.259 --> 00:04:22.300 Jesus is God's king who was sent by God to rule over God's people. 00:04:23.339 --> 00:04:26.000 And we're going to spend a few weeks in this section. 00:04:26.099 --> 00:04:28.079 I want you to have that question in the back of your mind. 00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:34.319 But at the beginning of this new section, we see Jesus, God's king, the chosen one. 00:04:35.039 --> 00:04:38.420 So the question that we're going to ask is, what will the king find? 00:04:39.620 --> 00:04:43.339 There are three things that we'll see this morning. 00:04:43.339 --> 00:04:44.839 We'll see the king arrives. 00:04:45.239 --> 00:04:48.619 We'll see the king weeps and the king rebukes. 00:04:49.899 --> 00:04:52.339 Will Jesus find a people who are expecting him? 00:04:52.899 --> 00:04:57.399 A people who are excited about his arrival and the arrival of God's kingdom? 00:04:57.519 --> 00:04:59.799 Or will he find a people who've turned their backs on him? 00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:04.879 Well, let's look at the passage and see what God has to teach us this morning. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:09.339 So the first thing that we see is that the king arrives. 00:05:09.339 --> 00:05:12.759 Verses 28 to 40, the king arrives. 00:05:13.479 --> 00:05:16.479 So at this moment, Jesus is standing just outside Jerusalem. 00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:20.560 He's just taught the crowds and disciples about the kingdom of God. 00:05:21.339 --> 00:05:25.279 And he turns to two of his disciples and says, go to the next village and you'll find a donkey. 00:05:25.899 --> 00:05:26.599 Bring it to me. 00:05:27.319 --> 00:05:32.539 And so they go and bring it to Jesus because the Lord needs it, as Jesus says. 00:05:32.540 --> 00:05:40.080 Do you remember what you were doing on the 29th of April, 2011? 00:05:41.700 --> 00:05:42.500 Probably not. 00:05:42.620 --> 00:05:47.600 Maybe it's just a date I've picked out, but it's actually a pretty important date to the royal family. 00:05:48.180 --> 00:05:57.180 So maybe you were sitting at home glued to your television as you watched the wedding procession of Prince William and his wife-to-be, Kate. 00:05:57.180 --> 00:06:00.400 You probably remember scenes similar to this one. 00:06:01.400 --> 00:06:09.400 Tons of people flocked to the streets to see the wedding, to see the procession as the prince and his bride made their way to the church, 00:06:09.399 --> 00:06:17.679 surrounded by big, beautiful horses, by people dressed in lovely and frankly a little bit strange outfits as well. 00:06:18.479 --> 00:06:21.979 But they were being pulled in this really lovely decorated carriage. 00:06:22.919 --> 00:06:27.279 It was even declared a public holiday so that people could be there in London. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:30.819 Or if you couldn't be there in person, that you could at least watch it on television. 00:06:33.919 --> 00:06:36.939 That's the kind of entrance we'd expect from royalty, isn't it? 00:06:38.179 --> 00:06:46.159 Even in Jesus' day, when the king returned to a city, there was a huge festival that took place which took absolutely days to prepare. 00:06:46.559 --> 00:06:50.619 The animals were fattened weeks in advance to prepare a huge feast. 00:06:50.620 --> 00:06:59.660 The streets were lined and jam-packed with people who were shouting encouragements and expressing their love for their king who's just returned. 00:07:01.459 --> 00:07:03.680 But Jesus doesn't make an entrance like that. 00:07:04.439 --> 00:07:12.360 Instead of coming in with all the attention on him, instead of being pulled by a huge horse and a lovely carriage, 00:07:13.139 --> 00:07:16.740 Jesus is going to enter Jerusalem on the back of a humble donkey. 00:07:16.740 --> 00:07:23.280 Now this isn't an insignificant detail that Luke has just thrown in there to pique our interest. 00:07:24.199 --> 00:07:26.840 But this detail helps us see who Jesus is. 00:07:27.060 --> 00:07:32.660 So let me read a verse from the Old Testament which is pointing forward to the promised king of God, the Messiah, 00:07:33.340 --> 00:07:35.699 the one who would save God's people. 00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:38.680 This verse is from the book of Zechariah, 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:43.540 which was written pointing forward to the day that God would reconcile the world to himself. 00:07:43.540 --> 00:07:48.340 It points to the day where God's kingdom would come and the arrival of his king. 00:07:48.460 --> 00:07:50.220 So let's read this verse together. 00:07:51.500 --> 00:07:53.300 Rejoice greatly, daughter Zion. 00:07:53.500 --> 00:07:55.280 Shout, daughter Jerusalem. 00:07:55.720 --> 00:07:57.640 See, your king comes to you, 00:07:58.060 --> 00:08:01.720 righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:04.280 on a colt, a fowl of a donkey. 00:08:06.320 --> 00:08:10.100 Do you see the significance of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey? 00:08:10.100 --> 00:08:13.220 Jesus hasn't just randomly thought, 00:08:13.320 --> 00:08:15.300 oh yeah, that would be a good way to get into the city. 00:08:16.240 --> 00:08:17.320 Take the load off my feet. 00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:22.340 But Jesus has done this to point out his identity as God's king. 00:08:22.860 --> 00:08:27.220 And the whole of the Old Testament points to Jesus being God's king, 00:08:27.720 --> 00:08:30.280 the Messiah of God's people. 00:08:31.620 --> 00:08:34.960 Look at the description of the king in this verse. 00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:39.860 God's chosen king will be righteous and victorious, 00:08:40.620 --> 00:08:42.100 but he will also be humble. 00:08:43.740 --> 00:08:46.080 Now based on what we've already seen in Luke's gospel 00:08:46.080 --> 00:08:48.240 and based on what we'll see in these final chapters, 00:08:48.660 --> 00:08:52.019 this is a completely fitting description of Jesus, isn't it? 00:08:53.280 --> 00:08:54.940 Jesus is the son of God. 00:08:55.019 --> 00:08:55.800 He never sinned. 00:08:55.860 --> 00:08:56.960 He was perfect. 00:08:57.600 --> 00:08:59.019 Never rebelled against God. 00:08:59.019 --> 00:09:02.279 And yet he died a criminal's death. 00:09:03.620 --> 00:09:05.399 Was it because he deserved it? 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:06.579 No. 00:09:07.740 --> 00:09:10.360 Was it because his enemies defeated him? 00:09:10.819 --> 00:09:11.840 Definitely not. 00:09:12.699 --> 00:09:15.419 In fact, the absolute opposite is true. 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:17.939 At the cross of Jesus, we see his righteousness 00:09:17.939 --> 00:09:21.079 and his victory most clearly. 00:09:22.139 --> 00:09:22.779 Why? 00:09:23.439 --> 00:09:24.779 Because at the cross of Jesus, 00:09:24.919 --> 00:09:29.939 he defeated mankind's worst enemy, sin. 00:09:31.139 --> 00:09:33.100 The sin which cuts us off from God. 00:09:33.620 --> 00:09:35.939 The wrongdoings of our lives, 00:09:35.980 --> 00:09:38.199 which make us deserving of God's wrath. 00:09:38.620 --> 00:09:40.620 All of that was poured on Jesus, 00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:42.579 but he was not defeated. 00:09:43.860 --> 00:09:48.240 He rose victorious from the grave three days later. 00:09:48.240 --> 00:09:51.200 He defeated sin and death 00:09:51.200 --> 00:09:53.340 and made reconciliation with God possible 00:09:53.340 --> 00:09:55.480 for all those who call on his name. 00:09:56.919 --> 00:09:58.879 This is God's king. 00:10:00.560 --> 00:10:02.500 This is the king who God had chosen 00:10:02.500 --> 00:10:03.899 to rule over his people. 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:05.740 So think back to the question. 00:10:06.980 --> 00:10:09.060 What is this king going to find? 00:10:10.620 --> 00:10:12.620 As Jesus makes his way to Jerusalem, 00:10:12.899 --> 00:10:14.299 we see two responses. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:17.919 We see faith and we see rejection. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:20.480 Look at what the disciples are doing 00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:23.060 in verses 37 and 38. 00:10:25.379 --> 00:10:28.680 The whole crowd of disciples began joyfully 00:10:28.680 --> 00:10:31.120 to praise God in a loud voice 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:33.320 for all the miracles they had seen. 00:10:34.200 --> 00:10:36.759 Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:10:37.399 --> 00:10:40.440 Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. 00:10:42.659 --> 00:10:45.680 Jesus' disciples are declaring who Jesus is 00:10:45.679 --> 00:10:47.839 and they are glorifying and praising God 00:10:47.839 --> 00:10:49.979 for the wonderful things that they have seen. 00:10:51.319 --> 00:10:53.099 They might not have fully understood 00:10:53.099 --> 00:10:56.359 exactly what Jesus' kingdom would look like 00:10:56.359 --> 00:10:59.479 or exactly how Jesus is going to be God's king, 00:10:59.579 --> 00:11:01.819 but they believed that he was the Messiah 00:11:01.819 --> 00:11:05.319 and they joyfully worshipped God because of it. 00:11:05.959 --> 00:11:07.479 The disciples had faith 00:11:07.479 --> 00:11:11.879 and that faith led them to joyfully worshipping God. 00:11:11.879 --> 00:11:14.480 So that's the faith of the disciples. 00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:18.559 But the other response is the Pharisees. 00:11:18.679 --> 00:11:19.939 They reject God. 00:11:21.299 --> 00:11:23.159 See, they heard what the disciples were shouting 00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:24.519 and they turned to Jesus and said, 00:11:24.600 --> 00:11:25.519 Jesus, stop them. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:26.580 Rebuke them. 00:11:28.899 --> 00:11:29.840 Do you remember last week 00:11:29.840 --> 00:11:31.600 how Graham took us through a parable 00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:34.220 and we saw some servants who didn't want a king? 00:11:34.220 --> 00:11:36.480 Well, this week we see it, 00:11:36.500 --> 00:11:37.279 but not in a parable. 00:11:37.399 --> 00:11:38.500 We see it in real life. 00:11:39.060 --> 00:11:42.040 The Pharisees are rejecting God's king. 00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:44.940 And the devastating news 00:11:44.940 --> 00:11:46.960 is that the Pharisees should have been the ones 00:11:46.960 --> 00:11:48.240 who were expecting Jesus. 00:11:48.920 --> 00:11:50.720 They should have been joining in the disciples 00:11:50.720 --> 00:11:53.040 as they shouted praise to God, 00:11:53.160 --> 00:11:54.920 not telling Jesus to stop them. 00:11:57.860 --> 00:12:01.420 See, the Pharisees should have been welcoming Jesus in. 00:12:01.419 --> 00:12:04.279 They should have been joining in with the shouting. 00:12:04.779 --> 00:12:06.699 These people were the teachers of the law. 00:12:07.539 --> 00:12:09.899 They were the people who taught Israel about God. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:11.120 They taught the Old Testament. 00:12:11.240 --> 00:12:12.120 They could quote you. 00:12:12.479 --> 00:12:15.519 They could quote to you tons of the Old Testament. 00:12:16.019 --> 00:12:17.439 They could speak to you for hours 00:12:17.439 --> 00:12:20.019 about God's promised king who would come. 00:12:20.620 --> 00:12:23.120 But as the king stands right in front of them, 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:25.219 instead of cheering with joy, 00:12:25.299 --> 00:12:27.679 they snap at and they reject Jesus. 00:12:27.679 --> 00:12:31.939 The people who should have been standing 00:12:31.939 --> 00:12:34.679 at the gates of Jerusalem to welcome Jesus in. 00:12:34.819 --> 00:12:36.259 The people who should have been hanging 00:12:36.259 --> 00:12:38.459 on his every single word. 00:12:38.519 --> 00:12:40.179 Instead of welcoming him, they reject him. 00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:42.939 But Jesus says, 00:12:43.459 --> 00:12:47.099 if my disciples stop singing praises to God, 00:12:47.339 --> 00:12:49.639 then the stones will cry out. 00:12:51.039 --> 00:12:53.219 No amount of opposition will stop 00:12:53.219 --> 00:12:54.719 the declaration going forth 00:12:54.719 --> 00:12:56.799 that God's king has arrived. 00:12:56.799 --> 00:13:00.959 Now as we sit here this morning, 00:13:01.099 --> 00:13:03.240 over 2,000 years away from this event, 00:13:03.339 --> 00:13:05.319 the same declaration rings true. 00:13:06.099 --> 00:13:08.019 God's king has arrived. 00:13:09.179 --> 00:13:10.919 The question that I want you to think about 00:13:10.919 --> 00:13:13.740 is how will we react to God's king? 00:13:15.299 --> 00:13:18.659 Will we believe in him and praise God joyfully? 00:13:19.439 --> 00:13:20.859 Or will we reject him? 00:13:20.860 --> 00:13:24.279 Now a question that you may be thinking about is, 00:13:24.580 --> 00:13:28.080 well, why is Jesus deserving of joyful praise? 00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:32.399 Well, because he is God in the flesh. 00:13:33.019 --> 00:13:34.580 He is the son of God. 00:13:34.659 --> 00:13:37.379 He is the solution to our biggest problem. 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:39.899 In Genesis chapter 3, 00:13:39.960 --> 00:13:41.659 at the beginning of the Bible, 00:13:41.820 --> 00:13:44.519 we see Adam and Eve rebel against God. 00:13:44.600 --> 00:13:45.800 They reject God's rule. 00:13:45.799 --> 00:13:48.299 They say, we don't want your care. 00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:52.579 But a promise is made amidst all the chaos 00:13:52.579 --> 00:13:55.399 that one day God would send a man 00:13:55.399 --> 00:13:57.859 to save the people of this world. 00:13:58.519 --> 00:14:01.500 And this person will defeat sin and Satan 00:14:01.500 --> 00:14:03.819 and will reconcile the world to himself. 00:14:03.820 --> 00:14:06.740 The whole of the Old Testament
