Bible, 00:06:34.899 --> 00:06:35.939 the book of Deuteronomy. 00:06:36.479 --> 00:06:40.399 And we're going to look today at this most influential text in the history of the world, 00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:45.359 the Ten Commandments, these God-given standards of the Ten Commands, 00:06:46.139 --> 00:06:50.479 are really the heart and the foundation of the message of Deuteronomy 00:06:50.479 --> 00:06:53.679 because they represent Yahweh, the Lord, 00:06:53.879 --> 00:06:59.479 and His loving, covenantal, marital relationship with His people. 00:07:00.739 --> 00:07:07.739 There's a certain here and now urgency about these commands for us here in the East Bay in 2021. 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:10.980 And I don't know why we left this out. 00:07:11.079 --> 00:07:11.800 It was my bad. 00:07:11.900 --> 00:07:14.960 But verse 3, you just heard Megan read. 00:07:15.079 --> 00:07:17.620 In the Hebrew, it literally says, 00:07:18.639 --> 00:07:24.439 with us, we, these ones here today, all of us living now. 00:07:25.220 --> 00:07:27.280 That's who God has made this covenant with. 00:07:27.319 --> 00:07:32.319 It's a contemporary claim with each new generation of God's people. 00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:39.500 And these Ten Commands are given to Israel as a whole, collectively, as a comprehensive unit. 00:07:39.620 --> 00:07:45.259 And yet, each one is spoken in the second 00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:00.839 Each of us are directly responsible to God for each of these things. 00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:07.079 And what this list really is, is a sketch of a contrast society. 00:08:07.239 --> 00:08:10.219 It's a sketch of an alternative way of life. 00:08:10.459 --> 00:08:12.259 A way that's different from the Egyptians. 00:08:12.479 --> 00:08:15.239 A way that's different from the Canaanites. 00:08:15.379 --> 00:08:23.239 This is a sketch of a different way of envisioning and living in a world where Yahweh, the Lord, is king. 00:08:23.779 --> 00:08:27.099 And in that sense, it's a blueprint for how to love Him. 00:08:27.100 --> 00:08:36.300 It's a blueprint for how to order and regulate the loves of our community so that we can live in harmony and peace under the breaker. 00:09:06.340 --> 00:09:13.180 Because there's a widespread assumption that if God is there, He wants us to follow the rules. 00:09:13.899 --> 00:09:24.720 In order to find credibility and acceptance with God, we must behave ourselves and obey His laws and follow His rules if we want to win His love and get in His good graces. 00:09:25.580 --> 00:09:27.139 Where did that idea come from? 00:09:27.700 --> 00:09:31.500 Why do we associate our behavior with acceptability to God? 00:09:31.500 --> 00:09:35.240 I don't know, but it's deeply ingrained in all of us, myself included. rescue me. 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:49.100 But I want us to look at verse 6. 00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:52.059 Verse 6 is the foundation stone of the Ten Commandments. 00:09:52.139 --> 00:09:54.220 And there's different ways to read it. 00:09:54.320 --> 00:09:56.100 One way is just to not read it. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:57.200 To skip over it. 00:09:57.379 --> 00:09:59.120 So that this sounds like this. 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:00.919 God said, you shall not. 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:06.539 If you want to curry my favor, if you want to gain my love, then you better behave. 00:10:06.659 --> 00:10:08.059 You better act right. 00:10:08.500 --> 00:10:17.159 And if we skip over verse 6, then God seems like a severe, harsh, exacting, demanding, inflexible God. 00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:23.820 But another way to read it is not to skip over verse 6, but to just kind of change verse 6 a little bit to read like this. 00:10:23.820 --> 00:10:36.220 I am the Lord, I am the Lord, the God, which makes God seem distant and impersonal, like a detached, indifferent, unloving God. 00:10:36.220 --> 00:10:39.480 But what does verse 6 actually say? 00:10:40.399 --> 00:10:43.080 It says, I am the Lord, your God. 00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:46.660 I'm a personal, intimate God. 00:10:46.740 --> 00:10:48.220 I'm your God. 00:10:48.300 --> 00:10:50.600 And you already are mine. 00:10:50.700 --> 00:11:58.019 We loved him. 00:11:58.100 --> 00:11:59.719 He was a terribly behaved dog. 00:12:00.839 --> 00:12:03.980 But the question is, when did Junior become our dog? 00:12:04.860 --> 00:12:09.759 Did he become our dog when we put him in our yard behind the protection of our fence? 00:12:10.439 --> 00:12:14.220 So that if Junior got out, he wasn't our dog anymore. 00:12:14.959 --> 00:12:15.240 to rest. 00:15:41.620 --> 00:15:45.220 And that's why I want to focus on commandment number four, keep the Sabbath holy. 00:15:45.920 --> 00:15:48.140 It's the longest and most specific of the
