At least 35 years ago, I think it was, our staff at St. Helens started it together and were so encouraged by it that we decided to start a course for all the students who came to us from the various they have a unifying theme that runs through that whole section. 00:04:02.060 --> 00:04:15.200 They tell of overwhelming destructive forces before which we human beings, whether in the 1st century or the 21st century, are absolutely helpless. 00:04:15.199 --> 00:04:19.439 So, why does Mark tell us these stories? 00:04:19.579 --> 00:04:23.300 And what is their message on the basis of our helplessness? 00:04:24.819 --> 00:04:28.339 Well, we can be quite sure that there were many miracles that Jesus did. 00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:30.199 I should think of hundreds, even not thousands. 00:04:30.339 --> 00:04:31.079 Would you not think? 00:04:31.079 --> 00:04:34.240 And he has chosen these with a purpose. 00:04:34.419 --> 00:04:35.279 What is that purpose? 00:04:35.399 --> 00:04:36.319 And what is his message? 00:04:37.899 --> 00:04:41.319 Well, message number one, every Christian can recognize. 00:04:41.699 --> 00:04:44.759 Mark has been plugging it from the beginning of his gospel. 00:04:45.959 --> 00:04:48.039 And I'm not going to spend a lot of time on it. 00:04:48.079 --> 00:04:48.860 You know it well. 00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:51.079 It's the foundation of the Christian faith. 00:04:51.079 --> 00:04:59.459 And Mark is recording how the disciples learned it until they came to a firm conviction about it. 00:05:00.579 --> 00:05:02.459 And that is that Jesus is I think of the forces of nature. 00:06:32.060 --> 00:06:34.639 Then the restoration of suffering people. 00:06:34.639 --> 00:06:41.500 And what we're being told by Mark in this very simple story is
