ascension was an event in his earthly life. 00:03:16.699 --> 00:03:25.339 Forty days after he rose from the dead, whose place in the plan of salvation, well, we're just not always that clear about. 00:03:25.340 --> 00:03:30.340 There are some reasons for that, but I won't go into those right now. 00:03:30.340 --> 00:03:37.659 Let's just take it that we tend to let the ascension kind of take a quiet seat somewhere else. 00:03:37.659 --> 00:03:41.139 And we don't come to it very often. 00:03:41.139 --> 00:03:46.340 So I want us to think about what the ascension means for us and for our some professing Christians, 00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:26.300 have doubted that Jesus' ascension was a public historic event. 00:04:26.300 --> 00:04:34.639 They'll continue to recite the Creed as a kind of way to acknowledge what we used to believe, maybe. 00:04:35.340 --> 00:04:39.540 But when it comes to explaining the meaning of the ascension, 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:46.280 they'll take us back to the resurrection first and say that it was really at heart, 00:04:47.300 --> 00:04:51.060 well, an experience in the lives and hearts of the disciples. 00:04:52.460 --> 00:04:55.400 And so there was no tomb that was emptied one morning, they say. 00:04:55.399 --> 00:05:00.659 Rather, Jesus somehow rose in their hearts, you've probably heard this on Easter morning, 00:05:00.859 --> 00:05:03.959 so that they really, truly felt him to be alive. 00:05:05.699 --> 00:05:11.000 And so 40 days later, so this view goes, it's not my view, I'm just saying someone's view, 00:05:11.459 --> 00:05:15.959 they felt that he had, if you like, relocated to heaven. 00:05:15.959 --> 00:05:21.680 So a well-known Anglican bishop, I'm not going to name, some years ago said, 00:05:21.799 --> 00:05:26.019 if Jesus' ascension was a literal event in history, 00:05:26.519 --> 00:05:33.219 it is beyond the capacity of our 21st century minds to accept it or to believe it. 00:05:35.599 --> 00:05:37.620 Now, maybe just two thoughts on that. 00:05:37.620 --> 00:05:44.560 I think we need to be more interested in how the Bible reads 21st century minds 00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:48.000 than with how 21st century
