And last week we saw that his wisdom was compromised from the start and remained so, 00:02:32.300 --> 00:02:41.680 and so maybe the slide wasn't as steeply sloped as we might have thought. In fact, it started at a fairly low level already. 00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:49.560 Well, like last week, this week we'll be moving around in Solomon's story in 1 Kings, but we'll camp out a little bit 00:02:49.560 --> 00:02:55.700 in 1 Kings chapter 8. So I'd invite you to turn to 1 Kings chapter 8, 00:02:55.699 --> 00:03:02.819 and then keep your Bibles open in front of you. 00:03:05.159 --> 00:03:10.179 Those who were here this morning, we had quite a long prayer which focused on Israel's sin, 00:03:10.259 --> 00:03:17.500 and those of you who know 1 Kings chapter 8 will know that it's a long prayer that focuses on Israel's sin. 00:03:17.500 --> 00:03:27.620 But we won't be looking at the whole of the passage, and our focus is Solomon's worship. 00:03:28.099 --> 00:03:35.199 We saw last week already that Solomon was a keen worshiper. He was an enthusiast. 00:03:36.680 --> 00:03:43.740 And so this week as we explore his worship, we want to see how someone so eager to be in God's presence 00:03:43.740 --> 00:03:48.040 could end up by experiencing God's absence. 00:03:48.860 --> 00:03:57.580 So 1 Kings chapter 8 is the story of the dedication of the temple that Solomon built, 00:03:57.659 --> 00:04:00.020 or that was built under Solomon at worship. 00:06:24.699 --> 00:06:29.000 Now, we could spend weeks looking at the theme of worship. 00:06:29.240 --> 00:06:32.460 It's a very rich theme to dig into. 00:06:32.640 --> 00:06:40.160 Already in the things that Pete's put together for us to our singing and in our prayers and in our reading, 00:06:40.460 --> 00:06:44.980 we'll have seen lots of pointers to true worship and what it's about and so on. 00:06:44.980 --> 00:06:51.840 But we'll be looking at four moments in Solomon's life where we see Solomon at worship. 00:06:53.340 --> 00:06:56.900 And it would help to have some definition of what worship is. 00:06:57.900 --> 00:07:00.000 And worship can mean different things. 00:07:00.100 --> 00:07:02.220 It means different things in different contexts. this task of building a temple for the Lord is inherited, in a sense, by Solomon. 00:09:59.539 --> 00:10:04.439 And it dominates Solomon's story in 1 Kings 1 to 11. 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:06.860 to say that the temple, 00:10:51.799 --> 00:10:55.899 nor to say that the king was a bad thing in coming to Israel. 00:10:56.039 --> 00:10:58.699 And you'll have seen in the reading that we had 00:10:58.699 --> 00:11:03.000 that the glory of the Lord filled the temple. 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:09.519 So, this is the place that God has chosen to mark his presence with his people. 00:11:10.200 technical details. 00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:06.799 You know, it's like getting a car or a computer or a new appliance. 00:12:07.240 --> 00:12:11.039 And we just love reading the manual and the specifications. 00:12:11.319 --> 00:12:12.639 That's not quite it. 00:12:13.099 --> 00:12:19.039 It's because our historian puts this timing here for a reason. 00:12:19.039 --> 00:12:22.039 As far as this historian is concerned, 00:12:22.939 --> 00:12:30.599 the temple comes at the precise midpoint of God's national life with his people Israel. 00:12:30.919 --> 00:12:32.500 It's a very significant moment. 00:12:33.259 --> 00:12:37.159 480 years after the Israelites came out of Egypt. 00:12:38.039 --> 00:12:42.419 Well, what had happened in this chronology 480 years earlier? 00:12:42.419 --> 00:13:07.559 and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 00:13:08.159 --> 00:13:11.919 Moses couldn't enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, 00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:15.399 and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 00:13:16.099 --> 00:13:17.659 That's the exodus event. 00:13:18.479 --> 00:13:21.379 480 years, we're at Solomon in the temple, 00:13:21.519 -->
