impactful this can be in our lives. 00:01:09.599 --> 00:01:22.239 It was actually when I was in college, going into my senior year of college, me and a couple of my close friends had the opportunity to go spend the week with a man by the name of Chuck Wood. 00:01:22.739 --> 00:01:25.339 Now, none of you, I'm sure, know who Chuck Wood is. 00:01:25.419 --> 00:01:32.239 But Chuck had just retired from the Army and where he had spent the last half of his career as an Army chaplain. 00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:42.179 Before that, he spent the majority of his career as an enlisted man going through ranger school and then becoming a ranger instructor. 00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:45.079 And so he was this man's man. 00:01:45.159 --> 00:01:47.299 And we got to go spend this week with him. 00:01:47.659 --> 00:01:52.039 And during that week, we actually stayed on cots in his garage. 00:01:52.599 --> 00:01:56.939 And then we would go along with him on all the things that he was doing. 00:01:56.939 --> The importance of having people that you're pouring into, that you're investing into. 00:02:11.419 --> 00:02:14.139 And it wasn't just something that he said to us. 00:02:14.439 --> 00:02:16.939 This was something that he showed us with his life. 00:02:17.419 --> 00:02:23.340 This is something that he not only poured into us that week and modeled for us individually. 00:02:23.340 --> 00:02:26.080 But we got to have a firsthand account. 00:02:26.180 --> 00:02:29.500 We got to witness how he did this each and every day. 00:02:29.700 --> 00:02:32.759 This wasn't just something he did while we take a look at Jesus's life. 00:02:55.579 --> 00:02:57.079 Let's just take a look at his life. 00:02:57.219 --> 00:03:00.739 Yes, Jesus would minister to the multitudes. 00:03:01.500 --> 00:03:05.019 Yes, Jesus would preach sermons to thousands of people. 00:03:05.159 --> 00:03:07.619 Yes, he would do those big events. 00:03:08.079 --> 00:03:10.899 But that's not where he spent most of his time. 00:03:11.359 --> 00:03:13.000 He said, look at Jesus's life. 00:03:13.060 --> 00:03:14.239 He did those things. 00:03:14.519 --> 00:03:19.039 But he spent far more time with those disciples that went around with him. 00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:27.199 And even more than that, he was very intentional about those 12 apostles that were very close to him during his ministry. 00:03:27.620 --> 00:03:38.039 And then even on top of that, the three that he really poured his life into, Peter, James, John, those that he really built those relationships with. 00:03:38.500 --> 00:03:42.680 And Chuck said, he says, this is the model that has been given to us. 00:03:42.939 --> 00:03:44.439 This is God's plan. 00:03:44.519 --> 00:03:47.340 And so we must be a part of that. 00:03:47.340 --> 00:03:55.860 And so there are many different places that we could go to in Scripture to see how this is God's plan for reaching the lost, reaching the nations. 00:03:56.420 --> 00:03:59.000 And we could easily look at Jesus's life. 00:03:59.140 --> 00:04:04.080 But for our time this morning, I want us to look at a relationship. 00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:09.099 I want us to look at how this played out in some people's lives. 00:04:09.159 --> 00:04:14.719 And so for our time this morning, I want us to take a look at Paul and Barnabas's life. 00:04:14.719 --> 00:04:20.860 You know, many times when we think about Paul's life, we see him in the driver's seat. 00:04:20.939 --> 00:04:23.879 We see him as the mentor in the relationships. 00:04:24.500 --> 00:04:30.199 We see him as the one who is showing others how to live and to follow his example. 00:04:30.759 --> 00:04:37.180 And we definitely see this play out in Paul and Barnabas's relationship, especially later on. 00:04:37.180 --> 00:04:43.160 But at the beginning, what you see is Barnabas giving Paul an example. 00:04:43.740 --> 00:04:48.620 What you see at the beginning is Barnabas coming alongside him and encouraging him. 00:04:48.980 --> 00:04:56.079 And so I want us to take a look at the beginning of their relationship and then over a couple different places throughout their relationship 00:04:56.079 --> 00:05:05.180 and see the importance that we have of meeting with people, of showing people, of investing in their lives. 00:05:05.180 --> 00:05:09.780 And so to do this, we're going to start our time looking in Acts chapter 9. 00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:15.639 So if you have a copy of God's Word, I want you to go ahead and open there with me to Acts chapter 9. 00:05:16.439 --> 00:05:21.819 But then we're also going to look at the next few chapters of Scripture all the way to chapter 13 00:05:21.819 --> 00:05:26.600 to look at how this played out in Paul and Barnabas's life. 00:05:26.600 --> 00:05:37.600 But to begin with, what we see is that showing means we must see those God places in our lives. 00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:38.780 Showing. 00:05:38.800 --> 00:05:43.320 In order to show, we must see those that God has placed in our lives. 00:05:43.560 --> 00:05:49.180 And we get this from Acts chapter 9 verses 26 through 30. 00:05:49.980 --> 00:05:52.160 Right here through 31, it says this. 00:05:52.160 --> 00:06:22.140 And it says, 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:45.760 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. 00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:52.480 And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. 00:06:53.740 --> 00:06:59.339 Now I want to take for just a moment, I want us to consider the situation as it is to the apostles. 00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:04.959 You have the arch enemy of the church coming in and wanting to meet with you. 00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:13.419 You have the one who had over and over again persecuted Christians, who was there as Stephen Stoney, 00:07:13.699 --> 00:07:16.699 who was approving of that execution there. 00:07:16.799 --> 00:07:22.719 You have the one who was traveling around trying to squash this movement of God's people, 00:07:22.859 --> 00:07:26.159 this movement of the church, and throw those individuals in prison. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:33.980 And so you have this person who had seen the example of persecuting the church over and over again. 00:07:34.140 --> 00:07:39.960 You have this person who is now coming in, and rightfully so, they were a little bit concerned. 00:07:40.580 --> 00:07:44.120 They were a little uneasy about what was going to take place. 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:49.379 But their caution needed to give way to their Christ-like behavior. 00:07:58.899 --> 00:08:06.560 This simple act, that otherwise seemingly minor detail, just this one little portion of Scripture, 00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:15.620 this one little verse in this section, it ends up having and leading to a lifelong friendship in Paul and Barnabas' life. 00:08:16.259 --> 00:08:21.459 In this very small section of Scripture, Barnabas steps into Paul's life 00:08:21.459 --> 00:08:28.980 and shows him very quickly what it means to extend the grace that he had already been shown in his life. 00:08:29.540 --> 00:08:34.340 In a very quick way, in a very ordinary way, 00:08:34.340 --> 00:08:42.860 he steps in to show God's grace, show the grace that he had already been shown in receiving Jesus as his Lord and Savior. 00:08:43.320 --> 00:08:50.100 In this seemingly small act, God uses it in a powerful way to encourage Paul. 00:08:51.160 --> 00:08:55.920 You see, oftentimes we gravitate towards the exciting stories in Scripture. 00:08:56.560 --> 00:09:01.519 Those powerful stories of martyrdom or mass conversions or miracles. 00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:09.860 But much of the Christian life is oftentimes doing ordinary things with gospel intentionality. looked like they could be the next leader. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:22.100 But then this is what we read in 1 Samuel 16, 7. 00:13:22.100 --> 00:13:22.860 He says, 00:13:22.860 --> 00:13:24.800 But the Lord said to Samuel, 00:13:25.800 --> 00:13:30.159 Do not look at his appearance or the height of his stature, 00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:32.279 because I have rejected him. 00:13:32.540 --> 00:13:36.279 For the Lord sees, not as man sees. 00:13:36.620 --> 00:13:41.420 Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:43.920 I want to encourage you today. 00:15:28.419 which means the encourager. 00:15:28.720 --> 00:15:31.360 He's someone who encourages so much 00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:34.759 that this becomes what everybody refers to him as, 00:15:34.960 --> 00:15:36.179 as the encourager. 00:15:36.179 --> 00:15:39.079 And so before we look at Acts 11 right here, 00:15:39.179 --> 00:15:41.719 I want to give you a little bit of background information. 00:15:42.719 --> 00:15:45.779 Persecution had led many in the Jerusalem church 00:15:45.779 --> 00:15:47.699 to disperse, to scatter. 00:15:48.179 --> 00:15:50.579 And some of those that were being scattered 00:15:50.579 --> 00:15:53.099 made their way up to Antioch. 00:15:53.419 --> 00:15:57.939 Now at Antioch, God began to work and move in a mighty way. 00:15:58.379 --> 00:16:00.639 In Antioch, God was working and moving. 00:16:00.779 --> 00:16:03.279 And so the church in Jerusalem wasn't exactly sure 00:16:03.279 --> 00:16:05.959 what to do with all these new Gentile believers. 00:16:06.199 --> 00:16:09.480 And so they sent Barnabas to go check things out, 00:16:09.559 --> 00:16:10.959 to see what's going on. 00:16:10.980 --> 00:16:13.339 And this is where we pick up in Acts chapter 11, 00:16:13.659 --> 00:16:15.879 starting in verse 19, it says this. 00:16:15.879 --> 00:16:19.480 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution 00:16:19.480 --> 00:16:21.059 that arose over Stephen, 00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:25.500 traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, 00:16:25.500 --> 00:16:29.639 speaking the word to no one except the Jews. 00:16:30.600 --> 00:16:32.179 But there were some of them, 00:16:32.679 --> 00:16:34.639 men of Cyprus and Cyrene, 00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:36.000 who on coming to Antioch, 00:16:36.360 --> 00:16:38.100 spoke to the Hellenists also, 00:16:38.500 --> 00:16:39.860 preaching to Lord Jesus. 00:16:40.379 --> 00:16:42.639 And the hand of the Lord was with them, 00:16:42.799 --> 00:16:46.159 and a great number of who believed turned to the Lord. 00:16:46.519 --> 00:16:48.039 The report of this came 00:16:48.039 --> 00:16:50.480 to the ears of the church in Jerusalem. 00:16:50.480 --> 00:16:52.840 And they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 00:16:53.159 --> 00:16:55.600 And when he came and saw the grace of God, 00:16:55.960 --> 00:16:58.220 he was glad and exhorted them all 00:16:58.220 --> 00:17:01.820 to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, 00:17:02.200 --> 00:17:03.639 for he was a good man, 00:17:03.980 --> 00:17:05.940 full of the Holy Spirit and faith. 00:17:06.220 --> 00:17:09.099 And a great many people were added to the Lord. 00:17:09.559 --> 00:17:13.460 And so Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul. 00:17:13.920 --> 00:17:15.259 And when he had found him, 00:17:15.299 --> 00:17:16.839 he brought him to Antioch. 00:17:17.059 --> 00:17:19.380 For a whole year they met with the church 00:17:19.380 --> 00:17:21.640 and taught a great many people. 00:17:22.180 --> 00:17:23.000 And in Antioch, 00:17:23.080 --> 00:17:26.420 the disciples were first called Christians. 00:17:27.380 --> 00:17:28.880 The church in Jerusalem 00:17:28.880 --> 00:17:32.440 heard that in the church in Jerusalem 00:17:43.900 --> 00:17:45.700 weren't exactly sure about the Samaritans 00:17:45.700 --> 00:17:46.960 coming to faith in Christ. 00:17:46.960 --> 00:17:48.740 And so in Acts chapter 8, 00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:50.700 they sent out Peter and John 00:17:50.700 --> 00:17:54.259 to go investigate these conversions 00:17:54.259 --> 00:17:56.420 that were taking place among the Samaritans. 00:17:56.740 --> 00:18:00.299 And now they hear about these Gentile believers in Antioch. 00:18:00.759 --> 00:18:03.319 And so they send Barnabas to check on things. 00:18:03.860 --> 00:18:04.799 Once in Antioch, 00:18:05.019 --> 00:18:07.559 Barnabas, without hesitation, 00:18:08.100 --> 00:18:10.579 begins to rejoice at what God is doing. 00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:12.880 When you think about all the people 00:18:12.880 --> 00:18:14.340 they could have sent to Antioch 00:18:14.339 --> 00:18:15.740 to investigate this, 00:18:16.119 --> 00:18:17.919 praise God they sent Barnabas. 00:18:18.279 --> 00:18:20.240 Praise God they sent the encourager. 00:18:20.519 --> 00:18:22.919 One who is looking and seeing how God is moving, 00:18:23.240 --> 00:18:24.559 who's not going to go and say, 00:18:24.679 --> 00:18:26.379 hey, well, these people aren't Jews. 00:18:26.500 --> 00:18:28.480 I'm not sure that they can come to faith in Christ. 00:18:28.759 --> 00:18:30.259 These people
