00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:27.379 a letter about the greatness of Christ and the all-sufficiency of who he is 00:00:27.379 --> 00:00:28.140 and what he's done. 00:00:28.140 --> 00:00:31.339 And you'll remember if you've been with us the last few weeks that Paul 00:00:31.339 --> 00:00:37.240 had never met this church before, but we find that he greatly cared about them. 00:00:37.780 --> 00:00:44.939 And he's going to describe his ministry in the text before us in order to encourage them. 00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:49.480 So we're picking up in chapter 1, verse 24, and we're going to read, best way to identify a counterfeit is by studying the real thing. 00:03:17.439 --> 00:03:24.159 Whether it's currency or the artwork of an old master, it's best to spend your time learning 00:03:24.159 --> 00:03:26.060 what makes the real thing the real thing. 00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:30.719 Then you can spot whatever imitations happen to come along. 00:03:31.859 --> 00:03:35.419 And apparently, when it comes to money, I've been told, it's not all that difficult. 00:03:35.860 --> 00:03:40.219 There are certain things that you can look for, the security thread, the watermark, the what a fake looks like too, to compare them side by side. 00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:55.480 But on the whole, if you can know the real thing and what to look for, you can avoid being 00:03:55.480 --> 00:03:57.100 taken in by the counterfeits. 00:03:59.200 --> 00:04:02.219 That's some of what Paul is up to in this paragraph. 00:04:02.219 --> 00:04:07.340 He's showing us what true gospel ministry the spiritual options in the ancient world seemed plausible to the 00:04:20.740 --> 00:04:21.220 Colossians. 00:04:22.160 --> 00:04:27.899 And there were teachers and there were gurus with seeming authority and wisdom and skill who really 00:04:27.899 --> 00:04:30.300 seemed to know what they were talking about. 00:04:30.300 --> 00:04:34.220 And maybe they had a following, seemingly to prove it. 00:04:35.939 --> 00:04:40.740 But you see, for Paul to be taken in by these alternate spiritual options was sort of like 00:04:40.740 --> 00:04:45.080 having a wallet full of counterfeit money without even realizing it. 00:04:45.939 --> 00:04:47.019 You may feel rich. 00:04:47.620 --> 00:04:49.840 Your wallet is seemingly full of cash. 00:04:49.939 --> 00:04:55.259 But when you finally get to the bank and they run your money through that machine, you realize 00:04:55.259 --> 00:04:59.080 that it's not worth a thing and that you're actually broke. 00:05:00.300 --> 00:05:03.100 The same is true for us. 00:05:04.780 --> 00:05:10.879 Imagine going through life thinking that you're spiritually wealthy, only to find that whatever 00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:14.860 you've been believing in and trusting in has been a counterfeit all along. 00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:18.980 Imagine coming to the end of your days and realizing that you're bankrupt. 00:05:18.980 --> 00:05:25.200 Or to change the metaphors for a moment, imagine to find that what you thought was real medicine 00:05:25.200 --> 00:05:26.700 was only a placebo. 00:05:27.280 --> 00:05:33.480 And those benefits that you felt, only a placebo effect, masking the fact that the real problem, 00:05:33.580 --> 00:05:38.560 the real sickness remained untouched, as dangerous and as cancerous as ever. 00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:47.720 So then it's important that we grasp what real biblical ministry looks like. 00:05:48.360 --> 00:05:53.240 Counterfeits abound today as then and our spiritual lives are at stake. 00:05:53.360 --> 00:05:57.360 We don't want to be deluded, as Paul says, by teachers or ministries or movements that have the 00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:00.620 appearance of plausibility but are empty in the end. 00:06:00.620 --> 00:06:05.819 But we need to know what real gospel ministry looks like for another reason. 00:06:06.819 --> 00:06:12.040 Not just so we can spot the real thing, but so that we can do the real thing. 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:16.459 Later in the book of Colossians in chapter 3 verse 16 we read, 00:06:16.459 --> 00:06:29.620 What Paul is saying here is that the work of ministry, teaching and admonishing is actually 00:06:29.620 --> 00:06:32.439 for every member of the body of Christ. 00:06:32.539 --> 00:06:33.779 We're to do this to one another. 00:06:35.240 --> 00:06:40.079 Some are called to be pastors and elders, yes, but ultimately our job as pastors and elders 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:42.959 is to equip you, the saints, for the work of ministry. 00:06:42.959 --> 00:06:50.419 So that we can all build one another up in love, as we read in the book of Ephesians. 00:06:51.879 --> 00:06:56.740 So then we need to know what real life giving gospel ministry looks like so that we can actually 00:06:56.740 --> 00:06:59.139 do it, so that we can actually put it into practice. 00:07:00.359 --> 00:07:02.939 And that's how our text this morning is so helpful. 00:07:04.060 --> 00:07:09.919 What Paul is showing us here as we look at it are actually two broad aspects, two critical 00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:15.040 aspects, two necessary components of real gospel ministry. 00:07:15.800 --> 00:07:19.160 And once you learn to see them, they're pretty easy to spot. 00:07:21.280 --> 00:07:27.340 Broadly, we'll look at the manner of true ministry, and then we also see here the message 00:07:27.340 --> 00:07:29.060 of true gospel ministry. 00:07:29.400 --> 00:07:30.180 So that's where we're going. 00:07:30.259 --> 00:07:32.800 Let's look first at the manner of true ministry. 00:07:32.920 --> 00:07:35.240 Of course, there's a lot going on in this paragraph that we just read. 00:07:35.240 --> 00:07:39.000 We could probably do a whole seminar on the doctrine of the church out of this passage, 00:07:39.160 --> 00:07:43.960 but when it comes to the manner of Paul's ministry, three words or three pictures jump 00:07:43.960 --> 00:07:44.240 out. 00:07:45.340 --> 00:07:48.759 Suffering, stewardship, and struggle. 00:07:50.340 --> 00:07:52.040 We see suffering in verse 24. 00:07:52.220 --> 00:07:52.620 Paul says, 00:07:52.720 --> 00:07:57.439 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I'm filling up what is lacking 00:07:57.439 --> 00:08:00.360 in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is the church. 00:08:00.360 --> 00:08:05.699 Now remember that Paul is writing this letter from a prison cell. 00:08:06.960 --> 00:08:14.139 He is no stranger to suffering, and yet he can rejoice in that suffering because, as he 00:08:14.139 --> 00:08:19.819 says, in my flesh I'm filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions. 00:08:21.080 --> 00:08:24.639 Now that probably strikes you as a strange phrase at first, right? 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:26.139 What does Paul mean by that? 00:08:26.199 --> 00:08:28.480 Well, there's one thing that he certainly cannot mean by that. 00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:34.840 Paul can't mean that there's something lacking in Christ's afflictions for our atonement, 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:35.960 for our salvation. 00:08:36.740 --> 00:08:41.440 Our reconciliation with God was finished once and for all through Christ's suffering on the 00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:44.240 cross, and that lacks nothing. 00:08:44.980 --> 00:08:49.759 The rest of Colossians will say that over and over and over again in a dozen different 00:08:49.759 --> 00:08:55.539 ways, that what Christ has done is completely and utterly abundantly sufficient for us. 00:08:55.539 --> 00:08:58.699 So what is Paul talking about here? 00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:04.679 Rather than talking about Christ's afflictions for our atonement, for our redemption, he's 00:09:04.679 --> 00:09:12.099 talking about the ongoing afflictions that Christ experiences because of his ongoing union 00:09:12.099 --> 00:09:13.299 with his church. 00:09:14.459 --> 00:09:19.519 When the church suffers in this age, Christ himself suffers. 00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:23.019 Do you remember Paul's Damascus Road conversion? 00:09:23.799 --> 00:09:28.919 When Jesus appeared to Paul the persecutor, he didn't say, Paul, why are you persecuting 00:09:28.919 --> 00:09:29.480 my church? 00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:33.539 Jesus said, Paul, why are you persecuting me? 00:09:36.079 --> 00:09:39.639 Identifying himself completely with his body on earth. 00:09:39.639 --> 00:09:48.559 The church is, as it says here in verse 24, the body of Christ, inseparably united with 00:09:48.559 --> 00:09:50.379 Christ the head. 00:09:51.659 --> 00:09:59.179 And the road to glory for the church, just like Christ our head, the road to glory, the 00:09:59.179 --> 00:10:03.439 road to the crown of eternal life is by way of the cross. 00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:10.600 Over and over again, the New Testament is very clear that the church will experience affliction 00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:11.300 in this age. 00:10:11.400 --> 00:10:14.840 We will experience Christ's afflictions, as Paul says here. 00:10:15.800 --> 00:10:18.360 That is, we will experience afflictions for Christ. 00:10:18.520 --> 00:10:21.140 We will experience afflictions like Christ. 00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:24.380 We will experience our afflictions with Christ. 00:10:25.740 --> 00:10:26.920 Why is that the case? 00:10:27.020 --> 00:10:29.780 Why does the church experience such hostility from the world at times? 00:10:29.779 --> 00:10:37.839 Because the church, as Christ's body, friends, is the birth of the new creation in the midst 00:10:37.839 --> 00:10:38.360 of the old. 00:10:39.620 --> 00:10:45.059 In the midst of the old humanity, in the old fallen way of doing things, the church is God's 00:10:45.059 --> 00:10:47.819 new thing in the midst of the old. 00:10:49.319 --> 00:10:51.980 And that makes the church a bit like an organ transplant. 00:10:53.600 --> 00:10:57.159 The healthy organ is there to heal the body, to give it life and hope. 00:10:57.159 --> 00:11:03.039 But as we know, sometimes the old body doesn't recognize this new thing and actually attacks 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:03.939 it as a threat. 00:11:06.139 --> 00:11:10.199 It's a bit like that with the church, the new humanity in the midst of the old. 00:11:11.659 --> 00:11:17.959 And what Paul is saying here is that he, in his vocation as an apostle, is willing to step 00:11:17.959 --> 00:11:24.699 out on behalf of the church and to undergo these Christ-like afflictions to fill up what's 00:11:24.700 --> 00:11:29.080 remaining of the Christ's ongoing walk along the way of the cross. 00:11:29.160 --> 00:11:33.580 He's willing to step out on behalf of the church and to suffer Christ-like afflictions 00:11:33.580 --> 00:11:34.860 for their sake. 00:11:36.100 --> 00:11:40.660 And the overtones of this passage are even, in some sense, in their place so that they 00:11:40.660 --> 00:11:41.340 don't have to. 00:11:41.340 --> 00:11:49.920 So, this becomes then our first window into the manner of real gospel ministry. 00:11:51.139 --> 00:12:00.519 Real, true ministry is willing to gladly suffer hardship and loss or even persecution for the 00:12:00.519 --> 00:12:02.720 sake of the church, Christ's body. 00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:09.240 True ministers of the gospel are willing to stand in front, taking the blow of ridicule 00:12:09.240 --> 00:12:13.259 or hatred or even violence so that the rest of the body might be spared. 00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:18.700 We see that over and over in Paul's ministry, and Paul here is in prison. 00:12:19.019 --> 00:12:23.759 Just like many pastors and church leaders and ministers after him would, in the history 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:30.060 of the church, also suffer and also land in prison and also face persecution, drawing the 00:12:30.059 --> 00:12:35.959 heat and the animosity of the world's hatred onto itself so that the churches might be spared. 00:12:38.519 --> 00:12:45.899 In other words, if the church is Christ's body, real, true ministry doesn't lord itself 00:12:45.899 --> 00:12:46.859 over the body. 00:12:47.639 --> 00:12:50.739 Rather, it lays itself down for the sake of the body. 00:12:53.579 --> 00:12:59.019 Sadly, many ministries today exist to make a minister great. 00:13:00.059 --> 00:13:02.719 But that is not the way of Christ. 00:13:03.959 --> 00:13:10.019 Real ministry, true, genuine ministry is just the opposite, a willingness and love even to 00:13:10.019 --> 00:13:12.919 suffer for those to whom we minister. 00:13:14.979 --> 00:13:18.399 So, there's our first window into the manner of genuine ministry. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:20.899 We see the second in verse 25. 00:13:21.419 --> 00:13:23.519 It's not just suffering, it's stewardship. 00:13:24.379 --> 00:13:27.639 If the theme of suffering is connected to the metaphor of the church's Christ's body, 00:13:27.639 --> 00:13:34.019 then this idea of stewardship brings with it the metaphor of the church as God's household. 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:37.539 Now, an ancient household was a bit different than ours. 00:13:37.639 --> 00:13:42.360 It included not just the immediate family, but also at times the extended family, and also 00:13:42.360 --> 00:13:45.340 the servants and the workers who labored as part of the family estate. 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:49.840 The household was sort of a big organization, almost a mini business running. 00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.960 And within the large household, the head of the house would often appoint someone called 00:13:55.960 --> 00:13:56.879 a steward. 00:13:58.060 --> 00:14:02.639 And the steward's job was to make sure that the food and other resources of the household 00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:07.080 were being distributed and managed wisely and fairly on behalf of the rest of the people 00:14:07.080 --> 00:14:08.000 who made up the household. 00:14:08.580 --> 00:14:12.379 The steward wasn't there to act on his own wishes or plans, but to carry out the wishes 00:14:12.379 --> 00:14:13.680 and plans of the head of the house. 00:14:13.679 --> 00:14:19.339 So, you can see now the kind of picture that Paul is painting in verse 25. 00:14:19.579 --> 00:14:25.099 He says, I became a minister of the church according to the stewardship from God that 00:14:25.099 --> 00:14:28.719 was given to me for you to make the Word of God fully known. 00:14:29.399 --> 00:14:30.699 See the picture he's painting here? 00:14:30.859 --> 00:14:36.379 God is sort of the head of this household, the church, and Paul's been appointed as a steward 00:14:36.379 --> 00:14:42.879 under God's authority to make sure that the Word of God is being distributed to all in 00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:43.439 the house. 00:14:45.820 --> 00:14:49.399 So, this means that the manner of real ministry is not just one of glad, self-giving love for 00:14:49.399 --> 00:14:54.980 the church, but it's also one of faithful teaching and exposition and unfolding and distribution 00:14:54.980 --> 00:14:57.019 of God's Word. 00:14:59.299 --> 00:15:02.240 Real ministry is not just expounding our own opinions or theories. 00:15:03.299 --> 00:15:06.639 Real ministry is a stewardship of the Word of God. 00:15:06.639 --> 00:15:14.059 What God has stored up in the treasuries of His Word, the Gospel, and preserved in the Bible 00:15:14.059 --> 00:15:19.939 is what we, like good stewards, want to bring out at the right time in the right way so that 00:15:19.939 --> 00:15:21.620 the household can be fed and cared for. 00:15:21.620 --> 00:15:28.100 So, then if the manner of real ministry is a stewardship, then biblical teaching becomes, 00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:29.940 in many ways, the central activity. 00:15:33.539 --> 00:15:38.279 And in His devotion to teaching the Bible as God's stewards, real ministry will be appropriately 00:15:38.279 --> 00:15:38.879 humble. 00:15:40.899 --> 00:15:46.139 After all, we are simply servants working on behalf of the head of the house. 00:15:46.139 --> 00:15:49.659 This message doesn't ultimately come from us, but from Him. 00:15:50.379 --> 00:15:54.980 So, there's nothing for us, as we minister as a church, to get sort of self-inflated about. 00:15:55.100 --> 00:15:57.279 This isn't about our own wisdom or our own rescue. 00:15:57.659 --> 00:16:00.120 It's not our own wisdom or our own rescue that we proclaim. 00:16:00.259 --> 00:16:01.980 It's God's wisdom, and it's God's rescue. 00:16:03.059 --> 00:16:06.480 And so, we're humble, exalting God and not exalting self. 00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:15.100 But in addition to being humble, real ministry as stewardship will also, at the same time, 00:16:15.159 --> 00:16:16.399 be appropriately bold. 00:16:18.320 --> 00:16:21.440 After all, we're not doing this on our own authority. 00:16:21.580 --> 00:16:23.639 We are acting in the name of another. 00:16:25.080 --> 00:16:28.620 It is God's Word that we teach and we hold out. 00:16:29.620 --> 00:16:32.279 True ministry need not be sheepish or afraid. 00:16:32.279 --> 00:16:38.220 It need not be blown and tossed by whatever popular ideas might be trending at the time. 00:16:40.600 --> 00:16:43.600 As stewards of the Word, we can be humble and we can be bold. 00:16:46.120 --> 00:16:49.079 So, those are the first two windows into the manner of real gospel ministry. 00:16:49.240 --> 00:16:54.279 Paul's suffering shows us that true ministry is about self-giving love for God's church. 00:16:54.579 --> 00:16:58.779 And Paul's stewardship shows us that ministry is about faithful exposition of God's Word. 00:16:58.779 --> 00:17:02.759 And the third and last thing we see here is that there is struggle. 00:17:03.199 --> 00:17:04.460 Look at chapter 2, verse 1. 00:17:04.519 --> 00:17:12.559 I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face. 00:17:13.579 --> 00:17:18.059 Now, the word struggle here is actually an athletic term. 00:17:18.420 --> 00:17:20.599 It's a term from the world of sports. 00:17:20.599 --> 00:17:27.639 It carries with it an idea of striving for a goal or contending for the crown of victory. 00:17:29.159 --> 00:17:33.719 And what makes struggling different than the suffering that we talked about earlier? 00:17:33.899 --> 00:17:39.099 Well, suffering, sort of as part of a body, has to do with bearing external attack. 00:17:40.240 --> 00:17:48.339 But struggling, like an athlete on a team, has to do with internal desire, with drive. 00:17:48.339 --> 00:17:56.119 This is not the first time Paul will use athletic imagery to describe the work of ministry in 1 Corinthians. 00:17:56.419 --> 00:17:58.139 And in 2 Timothy, he does the same thing. 00:17:58.279 --> 00:18:05.139 Paul will say in those passages that competing like an athlete, training hard, maintaining self-discipline, striving for the crown of victory. 00:18:05.339 --> 00:18:08.559 All of these have something to teach us about real ministry. 00:18:08.559 --> 00:18:19.799 Here in Colossians, the idea of the struggle of ministry is connected to helping fellow believers reach what he calls maturity in Christ. 00:18:22.379 --> 00:18:29.259 Chapter 2, verse 2 describes that maturity that Paul is struggling to bring about in this way. 00:18:29.339 --> 00:18:31.759 It says, we should be encouraged in heart. 00:18:31.759 --> 00:18:34.379 And we should be united in love. 00:18:35.299 --> 00:18:38.019 And we should be fully assured in our understanding. 00:18:39.440 --> 00:18:44.759 This is what Paul strives and struggles like an athlete to see happen in Colossae. 00:18:45.160 --> 00:18:48.779 And in other cities he hasn't even visited yet, like Laodicea as well. 00:18:50.400 --> 00:18:55.779 Struggling, striving, training, working like an athlete, no doubt in prayer for these churches. 00:18:55.779 --> 00:19:00.899 No doubt in his correspondence and in his writing to them, as we see here in Colossians. 00:19:01.720 --> 00:19:07.200 And no doubt in his training and in his sending of ministers to these cities. 00:19:07.440 --> 00:19:10.700 Men like Epaphras that we looked at a few weeks ago who brought the gospel to Colossians. 00:19:10.740 --> 00:19:17.899 In all these ways, Paul is struggling and striving for these churches he hasn't even met yet. 00:19:17.900 --> 00:19:26.060 So the manner of real ministry, how can we spot real genuine gospel ministry when we see it? 00:19:26.920 --> 00:19:33.580 Well, the manner of it is not just self-giving love, not just
