And second, how do we respond to Him? 00:01:01.199 --> 00:01:09.939 We're leaving behind the twin stories that we had the last couple weeks, showing Jesus a power over evil and His power to heal. 00:01:10.420 --> 00:01:18.060 We're moving forward with the beginning of chapter 6, and as we come to this passage, we have one problem and one question. 00:01:18.060 --> 00:01:28.079 Our problem is this. In verse 5, we have this surprising or difficult statement which tells us that Jesus could do no mighty work there. 00:01:28.240 --> 00:01:31.280 Meaning He could do no mighty work in Nazareth. And that raises a problem. 00:01:31.740 --> 00:01:34.219 Is Jesus limited somehow in His power? 00:01:34.939 --> 00:01:41.879 Is Jesus facing limitations here, even though we're told that He's the Son of God, that He is God Himself? 00:01:41.879 --> 00:01:44.719 So that's our problem. Our question is this. 00:01:44.879 --> 00:01:53.699 If Jesus came and visited Colorado Springs, would He be able to do a mighty work in your life? 00:01:55.699 --> 00:02:01.199 If Jesus came to Colorado Springs, would He be able to do a mighty work in your life? 00:02:01.399 --> 00:02:04.599 In other words, what keeps us from coming to Jesus? 00:02:04.599 --> 00:02:15.759 And what is it that prevents us from experiencing true and deep and substantial change and healing in our lives? 00:02:17.340 --> 00:02:21.900 It's with that that we come to Mark chapter 6. way. 00:06:14.780 --> 00:06:17.360 What I am saying is that part of the human heart, 00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:22.480 and the way that it works is it always looks for someone else to blame. 00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:29.160 It's difficult to admit that it's not just what's outside of you that's holding you back, 00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:31.000 not just your age or circumstances. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:36.579 It's difficult to admit that it might also be what's inside that's holding you back. 00:06:36.579 --> 00:06:40.180 And that's actually the problem that we encounter in this story. 00:06:40.259 --> 00:06:44.539 In verse 1, we find out that Jesus is back in his hometown of Nazareth, 00:06:44.539 --> 00:06:47.859 and it looks like we're about to have a repeat of chapter 1. 00:06:47.959 --> 00:06:52.240 You may remember from chapter 1 that Jesus had come to the city of Capernaum, 00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:54.079 and we see this exact same situation. 00:06:54.180 --> 00:06:58.000 When he came to Capernaum, on the Sabbath day, he went into the synagogue. 00:06:58.219 --> 00:06:59.019 He started teaching. 00:06:59.620 --> 00:07:00.479 He does that here. 00:07:00.540 --> 00:07:01.280 It's a Sabbath day. 00:07:01.340 --> 00:07:02.160 He goes into the synagogue. 00:07:02.340 --> 00:07:03.080 He starts teaching. 00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:05.400 Chapter 1, you remember the word that we used. 00:07:05.480 --> 00:07:07.500 They were astonished at Jesus' teaching. 00:07:07.819 --> 00:07:08.920 Here, what do we find out? 00:07:08.980 --> 00:07:11.580 Chapter 6, they're astonished at Jesus' teaching. 00:07:11.700 --> 00:07:15.319 It seems like we're watching a rerun of the Jesus show, 00:07:15.740 --> 00:07:17.939 except there's one thing that's different. 00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:21.000 If you're tracking with chapter 1, you know after these things happen, 00:07:21.300 --> 00:07:22.700 Jesus casts out a demon. 00:07:22.700 --> 00:07:25.879 And so we should be expecting here as careful readers of the story 00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:29.800 that we're going to see Jesus do something great and miraculous again. 00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:34.280 Except it's the opposite that happens. 00:07:35.020 --> 00:07:36.400 They take offense at him. 00:07:36.660 --> 00:07:41.220 Verse 5, Jesus is not able to do any mighty work. 00:07:41.920 --> 00:07:43.620 And in verse 3, we're told why. 00:07:43.780 --> 00:07:46.200 Jesus is the hometown boy. 00:07:46.780 --> 00:07:50.140 They ask this question, is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary? 00:07:50.960 --> 00:07:53.420 Now, there's probably a subtle dig going on here. 00:07:53.420 --> 00:07:57.100 We would expect them to say that Jesus is not the son of Mary, 00:07:57.240 --> 00:07:59.900 but to name the father, that he's the son of Joseph. 00:07:59.899 --> 00:08:03.899 And so they're alluding here to the fact that maybe there's still some suspicion 00:08:03.899 --> 00:08:05.539 about the origin of Jesus. 00:08:05.639 --> 00:08:09.339 There's some questions about whether he's really up to the quality 00:08:09.339 --> 00:08:11.959 and the snuff of everyone else in this town. 00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:15.679 What's fascinating, though, is in verse 2, 00:08:15.779 --> 00:08:18.139 it's not that they deny Jesus' power. 00:08:18.239 --> 00:08:19.439 They actually recognize it. 00:08:19.479 --> 00:08:21.099 They know he teaches with wisdom. 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:23.259 They know that he's doing mighty works. 00:08:23.259 --> 00:08:25.939 They see all of those things. 00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:28.560 They just can't handle it. 00:08:30.339 --> 00:08:32.779 It's not that they believe he's incapable. 00:08:33.559 --> 00:08:35.100 It's just they don't want to see it. 00:08:35.139 --> 00:08:37.960 And Jesus names what's going on for us here in verse 4. 00:08:38.419 --> 00:08:41.000 A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:44.960 and among his relatives and in his own household. 00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:51.360 In other words, it is hard to submit to someone that you grew up with. 00:08:53.440 --> 00:08:58.100 It is hard to take advice and correction from a peer. 00:08:59.379 --> 00:09:03.019 And this is just another angle on the neediness that we've been talking about 00:09:03.019 --> 00:09:05.300 as we've walked through the Gospel of Mark. 00:09:05.400 --> 00:09:08.100 Jesus' power and wisdom here, they see it, 00:09:08.440 --> 00:09:10.440 and it's an assault on their pride. 00:09:10.440 --> 00:09:14.300 To admit that Jesus has something that they don't 00:09:14.300 --> 00:09:17.520 is also to confess that there is something lacking in them. 00:09:17.760 --> 00:09:19.380 There is something that they need. 00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:21.260 If Jesus is wise, then they are foolish. 00:09:21.380 --> 00:09:26.120 If he does mighty works, then they are limited and finite and weak. 00:09:27.600 --> 00:09:30.780 And so the We're given a negative example of faith. 00:09:55.720 --> 00:09:57.860 These people are confronted with this question of, 00:09:58.120 --> 00:09:59.160 what is wrong with me? 00:09:59.300 --> 00:10:01.540 Why is it that someone from our town 00:10:01.540 --> 00:10:03.600 is able to come back with this wisdom? 00:10:03.860 --> 00:10:05.720 And if we come up against that question 00:10:32.779 I see that Jesus here is doing mighty works, 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:35.639 and it shows me in ways I didn't realize before 00:10:35.639 --> 00:10:39.399 how weak and finite and fragile and sinful I am. 00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:42.899 Jesus' strength shows me my weakness. 00:10:44.180 --> 00:10:46.960 And so we can understand the threat that these people feel. 00:10:47.240 --> their very nature, 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:12.439 make you swallow your pride. 00:11:13.339 --> 00:11:16.000 Imagine opening a present on Christmas morning 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:18.639 from a friend, and it is a dieting book. 00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:22.539 Then you take off another ribbon and wrapper, 00:11:22.779 --> 00:11:25.360 and you find it is another book from another friend 00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:27.139 overcoming selfishness. 00:11:28.199 --> 00:11:29.840 If you say to them, 00:11:30.460 --> 00:11:32.120 Thank you so much, 00:11:32.500 --> 00:11:34.259 you are in a sense admitting, ate it. 00:13:15.040 --> 00:13:16.600 It's a wonderful thing to do. 00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:20.240 Now let's say that I go back to Chick-fil-A today 00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:24.320 and I want to order a 00:15:18.740 Is he saying that this woman that he healed had some great power 00:15:18.740 --> 00:15:21.360 that she was able to muster up and exercise 00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:22.820 so that her bleeding stopped? 00:15:23.580 --> 00:15:25.299 No, the power is in Jesus. 00:15:25.419 --> 00:15:28.139 What he is saying is that you were open and able 00:15:28.139 --> 00:15:30.620 and willing to
