at the beginning here, 00:07:37.160 --> 00:07:37.900 we see a command. 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:42.060 God's judgment is to be preached to Nineveh. 00:07:42.960 --> 00:07:44.180 So there's God's justice. 00:07:44.860 --> 00:07:46.440 Why will God be judging Nineveh? 00:07:46.920 --> 00:07:48.460 Well, he says right here, he says, 00:07:48.980 --> 00:07:50.680 Their wickedness has come up before me. 00:07:50.760 --> 00:07:51.160 They're wicked. 00:07:52.200 --> 00:07:53.760 We don't know everything there is to know 00:07:53.760 --> 00:07:56.520 about the ancient empire of Assyria, 00:07:56.740 --> 00:07:58.840 which Nineveh was the capital of most of the time. 00:07:58.839 --> 00:08:00.979 But we know enough, 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:03.039 we've discovered enough to know 00:08:03.039 --> 00:08:05.199 that they really were quite wicked. 00:08:06.439 --> 00:08:09.539 Even by the standards of the people around them, 00:08:09.839 --> 00:08:10.399 they were wicked. 00:08:10.579 --> 00:08:11.859 And the standards weren't very high. 00:08:13.019 --> 00:08:14.359 They worshipped false gods, 00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:17.359 and their gods were capricious and cruel, 00:08:17.599 --> 00:08:20.399 and the people that worshipped them became like them. 00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:22.779 And it was normal in those days 00:08:22.779 --> 00:08:24.819 for war to be very brutal. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:26.439 I suppose war always is brutal. 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:31.500 But the Assyrians took torture and intimidation 00:08:31.500 --> 00:08:36.559 and cruelty to just --> 00:09:11.740 because they were having some internal rebellions. 00:09:11.860 --> 00:09:13.199 They were having some famines and things. 00:09:13.600 --> 00:09:15.860 But Jonah knew that the first chance they got, 00:09:15.860 --> 00:09:19.019 they would love to come and conquer Israel 00:09:19.019 --> 00:09:22.240 and be just as cruel and merciless 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:24.120 as they had
