Let's hear God's word together. 00:00:22.900 --> 00:00:27.839 Sometime later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:37.600 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda, and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 00:00:38.539 --> 00:00:44.640 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie, the blind, the lame, the paralysed. 00:00:45.340 --> 00:00:48.659 One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years. 00:00:49.159 --> 00:00:56.240 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, 00:00:56.240 --> 00:00:58.740 Do you want to get well? 00:01:00.380 --> 00:01:05.200 Sir, the invalid replied, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. 00:01:05.760 --> 00:01:08.719 While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me. 00:01:09.320 --> 00:01:12.379 Then Jesus said to him, Get up, pick up your mat and walk. 00:01:13.099 --> 00:01:16.180 At once the man was cured. He picked up his mat and walked. 00:01:16.980 --> 00:01:18.939 The day on which this took place was a Sabbath. 00:01:18.939 --> 00:01:23.819 And so the Jewish leader said to the man who had been healed, It is the Sabbath. 00:01:24.620 --> 00:01:26.719 The law forbids you to carry your mat. 00:01:27.239 --> 00:01:31.939 But he replied, The man who made me well said to me, Pick up your mat and walk. 00:01:32.620 --> 00:01:36.539 So they asked him, Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk? 00:01:36.540 --> 00:01:39.540 The man who was healed had no idea who it was. 00:01:40.320 --> 00:01:42.860 For Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 00:01:44.060 --> 00:01:49.680 Later, Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, See, you are well again. 00:01:50.380 --> 00:01:54.320 Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you. 00:01:54.960 --> 00:02:00.820 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. 00:02:00.819 --> 00:02:07.799 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 00:02:08.439 --> 00:02:16.099 In his defence, Jesus said to them, My father is always at work to this very day and I too am working. 00:02:16.979 --> 00:02:20.219 For this reason, they tried all the more to kill him. 00:02:21.019 --> 00:02:26.639 Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own father, 00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:31.319 making himself equal with God. 00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:38.699 So our fourth sign, a healing at the pool of Bethesda. 00:02:41.339 --> 00:02:45.819 Whether you're listening today and you've been a Christian for a number of years, maybe even for decades, 00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:51.399 or if this is your first time visiting an online church, 00:02:52.399 --> 00:02:56.539 when we spend any time at all with Jesus in the Gospels, 00:02:56.639 --> 00:03:02.359 it is almost certain that he will take us by surprise, 00:03:03.079 --> 00:03:07.259 that sometimes he will perhaps even shock us. 00:03:08.199 --> 00:03:10.439 When we read his teaching, 00:03:11.379 --> 00:03:18.359 we discover here is someone with a great love for God and for people, 00:03:20.019 --> 00:03:23.099 somebody who taught about love and demonstrated love, 00:03:23.099 --> 00:03:30.439 but also someone who could talk equally clearly about the judgment of God. 00:03:30.939 --> 00:03:33.419 So nobody spoke about hell more than Jesus and we think, 00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:36.000 how do love and justice come together? 00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:37.180 And that surprises us. 00:03:38.459 --> 00:03:42.120 Maybe our surprise comes when we think about how he relates to other people. 00:03:42.979 --> 00:03:47.639 We see his patience, his kindness towards his disciples, 00:03:47.639 --> 00:03:50.939 even towards Judas who would betray him. 00:03:51.899 --> 00:03:58.079 Think about the way he welcomed the outsiders when everyone else would have been scandalised 00:03:58.079 --> 00:04:02.899 by spending time with some of the notorious people in Jesus' day. 00:04:03.019 --> 00:04:06.859 Jesus welcomed them and shared the good news with them. 00:04:06.860 --> 00:04:12.360 Perhaps our surprise and our shock comes when we think about the miracles of Jesus 00:04:12.360 --> 00:04:16.560 and we see him working in his world. 00:04:17.400 --> 00:04:20.120 Well, today in our story, Jesus says four things, 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:24.759 four sentences, each of which I suspect when we stop and reflect, 00:04:24.860 --> 00:04:28.939 we might find it surprising and perhaps even shocking. 00:04:28.939 --> 00:04:35.459 That was certainly true for the first people that heard Jesus speak. 00:04:36.579 --> 00:04:42.620 So this is the fourth of seven signs and it takes us again to the heart of the signs 00:04:42.620 --> 00:04:44.579 and John's purpose for them. 00:04:44.819 --> 00:04:47.639 This sign will speak to the mission of Jesus. 00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:50.839 Again, we will see him on a mission of mercy, 00:04:51.800 --> 00:04:54.459 bringing good news of salvation. 00:04:54.459 --> 00:04:59.419 But it will also clearly point to his identity. 00:04:59.639 --> 00:05:01.399 Here is Jesus, the son of God, 00:05:01.699 --> 00:05:06.419 who is God's chosen and sent saviour for the world. 00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:11.299 And as we think about these surprising words of Jesus, 00:05:12.279 --> 00:05:16.439 let's be careful not to make the mistake of the man in the story. 00:05:17.539 --> 00:05:20.679 Thinking about how he relates to Jesus, 00:05:20.680 --> 00:05:26.340 in a sense he might remind us of a child on their birthday, 00:05:26.819 --> 00:05:28.620 grabbing for the gifts, 00:05:29.500 --> 00:05:32.519 with no attention given to the giver at all, 00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:33.519 just want the stuff. 00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:37.780 And I hope we'll all realise 00:05:37.780 --> 00:05:43.259 that we need more than simply a sign. 00:05:43.259 --> 00:05:50.539 We need more than Jesus giving us temporary help for our trouble. 00:05:51.159 --> 00:05:56.240 You and I need Jesus as our Lord and saviour, 00:05:56.319 --> 00:05:57.240 whoever we are today. 00:05:58.159 --> 00:06:03.740 So let's begin with the probing question that Jesus asks. 00:06:03.819 --> 00:06:06.379 The first six verses give us the setting 00:06:06.379 --> 00:06:08.099 and then we get Jesus' first word. 00:06:08.159 --> 00:06:10.039 So the setting is this pool, 00:06:10.139 --> 00:06:11.699 this pool of Bethesda. 00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:15.120 And perhaps you know of hospices or hospitals 00:06:15.120 --> 00:06:16.659 that go by the name of Bethesda, 00:06:16.759 --> 00:06:18.860 named after our story. 00:06:19.019 --> 00:06:22.120 Bethesda was a gathering place for sufferers. 00:06:22.219 --> 00:06:24.500 Many sufferers were there. 00:06:24.620 --> 00:06:27.719 It was a place that was sheltered from the hot sun. 00:06:28.279 --> 00:06:30.599 And there was also a belief that the pool 00:06:30.599 --> 00:06:32.819 had healing properties. 00:06:33.120 --> 00:06:37.039 And so people would gather waiting for it to bubble up. 00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:42.000 You might think of a leisure pool 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.220 and that sense of anticipation, 00:06:44.780 --> 00:06:47.140 waiting for the wave machine to come on 00:06:47.140 --> 00:06:48.319 and the excitement. 00:06:48.520 --> 00:06:50.920 Well, imagine waiting for those bubbles 00:06:50.920 --> 00:06:52.500 in the hope that you're suffering. 00:06:53.140 --> 00:06:54.220 It might be over. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:56.740 So we're told in our story, 00:06:56.820 --> 00:07:00.200 there's this whole poolside of sufferers 00:07:00.199 --> 00:07:03.420 and Jesus takes the initiative 00:07:03.420 --> 00:07:05.920 to find out about one. 00:07:06.659 --> 00:07:11.759 One man who has been an invalid for 38 years. 00:07:12.759 --> 00:07:14.639 Now, if you know anything of Jesus, 00:07:15.339 --> 00:07:17.159 if you've heard any of his stories, 00:07:17.319 --> 00:07:20.439 you will expect to find in Jesus 00:07:20.439 --> 00:07:24.620 mercy and compassion for suffering people. 00:07:24.620 --> 00:07:27.740 And of course, it is true for us to remember 00:07:27.740 --> 00:07:30.000 that the heart of Jesus doesn't change. 00:07:30.100 --> 00:07:33.000 He still has mercy and compassion 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:34.399 for suffering people today. 00:07:35.939 --> 00:07:38.480 But we come to his first words in verse six 00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:39.439 and maybe we ask ourselves, 00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:43.360 what kind of question is Jesus asking? 00:07:44.660 --> 00:07:47.120 He goes to speak to this man 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:49.060 who's been an invalid for 38 years 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:49.759 and he asked him, 00:07:50.899 --> 00:07:53.899 do you want to get well? 00:07:55.620 --> 00:07:57.340 That seems blindingly obvious 00:07:57.340 --> 00:07:59.060 that the man would want to get well. 00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:02.360 So why does Jesus ask the question? 00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:05.199 Well, when you read John's gospel, 00:08:05.860 --> 00:08:07.920 we recognise that Jesus often speaks 00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:10.840 on a higher, on a hidden level. 00:08:11.319 --> 00:08:12.139 So in chapter three, 00:08:12.220 --> 00:08:14.459 he speaks to a religious leader called Nicodemus 00:08:14.459 --> 00:08:15.780 and he says to him, 00:08:16.259 --> 00:08:17.340 you must be born again, 00:08:17.420 --> 00:08:20.060 by which he means you need a work of God. 00:08:20.139 --> 00:08:21.259 You need the spirit to come 00:08:21.259 --> 00:08:22.860 and change you from the inside out. 00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:24.540 But Nicodemus is thinking, 00:08:24.620 --> 00:08:25.199 hold on a minute, 00:08:25.300 --> 00:08:27.860 how can I go back into my mother's womb? 00:08:27.899 --> 00:08:29.000 That just doesn't make any sense. 00:08:29.699 --> 00:08:31.840 Or then in chapter four of John's gospel, 00:08:31.840 --> 00:08:33.620 he's speaking to a woman by the well 00:08:33.620 --> 00:08:36.759 and Jesus says that he can give living water 00:08:36.759 --> 00:08:38.179 and the woman looks around and says, 00:08:38.259 --> 00:08:38.779 hang on a minute, 00:08:38.840 --> 00:08:39.639 you don't even have a bucket. 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:43.360 How can you possibly give me water? 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:47.560 Jesus speaks at a higher and a hidden level. 00:08:47.879 --> 00:08:50.000 Well, here's this probing question, 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:51.240 not a surface question, 00:08:51.340 --> 00:08:55.300 but a probing question to ask the man, 00:08:55.899 --> 00:08:56.560 and as we reflect, 00:08:56.639 --> 00:08:57.279 to ask ourselves to, 00:08:57.440 --> 00:09:00.200 what is it that you really want? 00:09:00.200 --> 00:09:03.200 Jesus is saying to the man, 00:09:03.320 --> 00:09:05.180 is it just healing you want? 00:09:07.480 --> 00:09:09.259 Or are you looking for something more? 00:09:10.400 --> 00:09:13.660 Can you see that your need runs deeper 00:09:13.660 --> 00:09:15.879 than simply the physical? 00:09:16.740 --> 00:09:18.300 Because bear in mind who is speaking. 00:09:19.220 --> 00:09:21.520 Bear in mind that it's Jesus who's asking the question. 00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:24.860 There's this growing tension in John's gospel. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:26.319 We've begun to see it with the signs. 00:09:27.199 --> 00:09:29.240 There are some people who are following Jesus 00:09:29.240 --> 00:09:31.259 only for the signs. 00:09:31.439 --> 00:09:32.639 They're here for the show 00:09:32.639 --> 00:09:34.679 or they're here because they're suffering 00:09:34.679 --> 00:09:35.679 and they want to get better 00:09:35.679 --> 00:09:37.319 or they want someone else to get better. 00:09:38.460 --> 00:09:40.220 So you've got people coming just for the signs 00:09:40.220 --> 00:09:41.179 while at the same time, 00:09:41.259 --> 00:09:43.779 they're opposing and rejecting Jesus and his word. 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:47.220 Jesus wants the man 00:09:47.220 --> 00:09:49.240 and he wants each one of us to recognise 00:09:49.240 --> 00:09:51.560 Jesus is the son of God 00:09:51.560 --> 00:09:53.720 and what matters is believing in him 00:09:53.720 --> 00:09:55.860 and believing in his words 00:09:55.860 --> 00:09:57.419 and ultimately believing in the work 00:09:57.419 --> 00:09:58.519 that he came to do, 00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:00.480 that his death on the cross was a death 00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:02.220 for my sin, 00:10:02.419 --> 00:10:03.279 to save me 00:10:03.279 --> 00:10:05.120 and to give me eternal life. 00:10:05.379 --> 00:10:06.299 To recognise 00:10:06.299 --> 00:10:10.740 that Jesus can do far more for us 00:10:10.740 --> 00:10:13.320 than we ever realise. 00:10:14.820 --> 00:10:17.659 This physical healing that Jesus is about to do 00:10:17.659 --> 00:10:20.000 stands for us as a signpost 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.279 for the still greater 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:23.779 spiritual 00:10:23.779 --> 00:10:26.379 and eternal healing 00:10:26.379 --> 00:10:29.000 that Jesus can do in our hearts. 00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:31.539 And so that probing question 00:10:31.539 --> 00:10:33.779 is designed to get the man to that point. 00:10:34.779 --> 00:10:36.199 And what comes next? 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:38.240 The next words of Jesus 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:39.539 is a simple command. 00:10:40.339 --> 00:10:41.779 But first we see how the invalid 00:10:41.779 --> 00:10:43.939 replies to his question 00:10:43.940 --> 00:10:46.280 and he's thinking on the lower level 00:10:46.280 --> 00:10:47.140 as many people do 00:10:47.140 --> 00:10:48.240 when they talk to Jesus. 00:10:49.580 --> 00:10:51.620 I have no one to help me into the pool 00:10:51.620 --> powerful words of healing 00:11:32.039 --> 00:11:32.860 and transformation. 00:11:33.860 --> 00:11:35.039 And of course we discover 00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:36.659 in verse 9 00:11:36.659 --> 00:11:37.779 that it's that second 00:11:37.779 --> 00:11:38.779 that is true. 00:11:38.779 --> 00:11:40.539 at once 00:11:40.539 --> 00:11:42.240 the man was cured. 00:11:42.339 --> 00:11:43.399 He
