00:01:23.299 --> 00:01:26.879 Jesus said to those who came to arrest him in verse 53, 00:01:27.159 --> 00:01:33.820 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me, but this is your hour and the power of darkness. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.760 And I want to take that as a title for our study this morning, the power of darkness. 00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:45.560 There are essentially two things I want us to think about, but of course there's going to be subheadings. 00:01:45.560 --> 00:01:47.120 So there's about 15 things. 00:01:47.260 --> 00:01:51.019 But we'll try and condense it to two main things as we look at it together. 00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:53.840 Number one, the depths of this darkness. 00:01:54.020 --> 00:01:56.500 And then in a few moments, the defeat of this darkness. 00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.859 So first of all, the depths of this darkness. 00:01:59.859 --> 00:02:04.700 Let's just try and get our bearings on the big biblical picture. 00:02:04.700 --> 00:02:12.539 Because from the beginning of his revelation of himself to us, our God is a God of light. 00:02:12.539 --> 00:02:19.340 The first words ever recorded of God are, let there be light as he banishes physical darkness. 00:02:20.780 --> 00:02:21.379 Gloriously. 00:02:21.959 --> 00:02:28.239 But we quickly find in the book of Genesis that the created order experiences spiritual darkness. 00:02:28.620 --> 00:02:34.199 And it comes along when God's word is denied in chapter 3 of Genesis and when it's disobeyed. 00:02:34.199 --> 00:02:45.780 And so spiritual darkness, as we talk about it, to give it a proper definition, is basically rebellion against God, rebellion against his word, rebellion against his ways. 00:02:46.459 --> 00:02:55.759 And the arch rebel, Satan, and all his efforts are channeled into rebelling and to bringing about rebellion. 00:02:55.759 --> 00:03:03.579 That's why we read in verse 47 about Judas' betrayal of Jesus. 00:03:03.580 --> 00:03:14.000 Because before we get to that, we read in verse 3 of our chapter that Satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the number of the twelve. 00:03:14.380 --> 00:03:19.900 And he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. 00:03:20.160 --> 00:03:25.300 And they were glad, verse 5 tells us, and agreed to give him money. 00:03:25.300 --> 00:03:33.040 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. 00:03:33.039 --> 00:03:39.280 I find these words at the beginning of chapter 22 that tease up our passage this morning, I find them quite chilling. 00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:43.060 That there is a gladness in deep darkness. 00:03:44.319 --> 00:03:47.919 That there is a celebration in deep darkness. 00:03:48.419 --> 00:03:56.840 The authorities couldn't legally arrest Jesus, so now they're glad they celebrate the dark deal done with Judas. 00:03:56.840 --> 00:04:06.039 And Judas himself has had a long-term problem managing his love of money. 00:04:06.599 --> 00:04:15.599 You know, well, I'm sure 1 Timothy 6.10 famously confirms what we see here, that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. 00:04:15.599 --> 00:04:20.120 And that's what we see worked out in Judas' life. 00:04:20.719 --> 00:04:26.879 John 12 recounts for us that occasion when Mary poured the expensive ointment in the feet of the Lord Jesus. 00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:29.600 And Judas Iscariot complained. 00:04:30.379 --> 00:04:34.759 He said, why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor? 00:04:34.759 --> 00:04:40.379 And John adds, he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. 00:04:41.480 --> 00:04:46.219 And having charge of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put in it. 00:04:47.500 --> 00:04:53.339 That's a way at the beginning of the adventures of the Lord Jesus Christ with his disciples. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:56.699 You've gone right through Luke's gospel. 00:04:56.699 --> 00:05:03.979 Do you remember in Luke 11.35, Jesus says, when the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness? 00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:09.899 When the light that is in you is darkness, then the addiction to money feels good. 00:05:11.579 --> 00:05:20.120 And ripping Jesus off is nothing in comparison to the joy and the satisfaction that the money you'll get promises you. 00:05:20.120 --> 00:05:25.699 And when you're a person like that, and in the presence of the Lord Jesus, and hearing all that he has to say, 00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:30.040 and totally unaffected by it, you're only there to hold the money bag, 00:05:30.300 --> 00:05:33.980 you're only there to pretend to be one of the disciples so that you can rip them off. 00:05:33.980 --> 00:05:40.040 When you behave like that for long enough, one day you'll find yourself capable not only of ripping Jesus off, 00:05:40.280 --> 00:05:41.699 but selling Jesus off. 00:05:44.199 --> 00:05:47.459 Capable of betraying the Lord of life. 00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:56.780 And not only betraying him, but betraying him for money and betraying him with a kiss. 00:05:58.699 --> 00:06:00.160 So verse 47. 00:06:01.500 --> 00:06:03.600 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd. 00:06:04.500 --> 00:06:07.439 And the man called Judas, one of the twelve was leading them. 00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:10.199 He drew near to Jesus to kiss him. 00:06:11.459 --> 00:06:14.180 Here's the depths of the darkness. 00:06:14.459 --> 00:06:16.319 Not only does he love money more than people, 00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:20.620 not only does he use a sign of love as a means of betrayal, 00:06:20.620 --> 00:06:26.219 but when the Lord tries to snap him back into reality, 00:06:26.480 --> 00:06:30.139 Judas is powerless to see sense. 00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:31.240 He can't stop himself. 00:06:31.379 --> 00:06:33.000 Look at verse 48 with me. 00:06:33.659 --> 00:06:34.480 Jesus said to him, 00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:38.420 Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? 00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:42.039 What a moment that was for Judas. 00:06:42.040 --> 00:06:45.480 The Lord Jesus looks him straight in the face and says, 00:06:46.080 --> 00:06:46.379 Judas. 00:06:46.620 --> 00:06:48.780 So he names him Judas. 00:06:49.560 --> 00:06:51.640 And he names his crime, would you betray? 00:06:52.020 --> 00:06:54.340 And he names his victim, the Son of Man. 00:06:54.500 --> 00:06:56.580 And he names his means with a kiss. 00:07:00.520 --> 00:07:02.520 But the darkness has overwhelmed Judas. 00:07:02.519 --> 00:07:06.279 And although he's been helping himself to the money, 00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:07.719 he cannot help himself now. 00:07:09.019 --> 00:07:10.839 He looks into the eyes of Jesus, 00:07:11.039 --> 00:07:13.000 who knows exactly what Judas is doing. 00:07:13.659 --> 00:07:16.019 And he goes ahead and executes his betrayal. 00:07:17.659 --> 00:07:21.819 For Judas, the depth of darkness is to hear Jesus question, 00:07:22.339 --> 00:07:25.799 Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? 00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:28.399 And for Judas to think in effect, 00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:32.620 Nevertheless, Jesus, not your will, but mine be done. 00:07:35.719 --> 00:07:39.379 But we don't just see exceptional rebellion in this text, 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:40.219 as we see with Judas. 00:07:40.299 --> 00:07:43.859 We also see typical rebellion in Peter. 00:07:45.739 --> 00:07:49.879 The incident here with Peter is the story of a follower of Jesus 00:07:49.879 --> 00:07:54.359 who, unlike Judas, was determined to do well. 00:07:54.360 --> 00:08:01.060 So how did Peter end up, as we heard read to us there so helpfully, 00:08:01.540 --> 00:08:03.780 weeping bitterly, full of regrets, 00:08:04.259 --> 00:08:07.360 having on three instances denied that he even knew Jesus? 00:08:08.319 --> 00:08:10.420 Well, we're going to slow the pace slightly now, 00:08:10.439 --> 00:08:13.740 and I want us to take a little bit more time over Peter 00:08:13.740 --> 00:08:16.699 as we trace how the darkness overwhelmed him, 00:08:17.080 --> 00:08:19.639 and maybe compare notes with Peter 00:08:19.639 --> 00:08:22.360 and see some parallels from our own experience. 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:25.080 I want to notice, I think, four things. 00:08:25.160 --> 00:08:26.780 Notice, first of all, the problem with Peter 00:08:26.780 --> 00:08:28.740 was his personal confidence. 00:08:30.520 --> 00:08:33.759 We see with both Judas and Peter 00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:36.879 that the behavior of these men is not just human frailty. 00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:39.600 There is profound spiritual darkness at work. 00:08:39.840 --> 00:08:42.899 Have a look back to chapter 22, verse 31. 00:08:44.539 --> 00:08:45.159 Jesus said, 00:08:45.159 --> 00:09:01.939 Now, can you imagine the Lord Jesus saying that to you? 00:09:02.259 --> 00:09:05.259 Saying your name twice with a sense of urgency and saying, 00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:06.860 Now, look, here's the issue. 00:09:08.100 --> 00:09:10.959 Satan has demanded to have you. 00:09:10.960 --> 00:09:14.300 Would that not make you very cautious? 00:09:14.500 --> 00:09:17.180 Would that not make you extraordinarily careful? 00:09:17.320 --> 00:09:19.340 But there doesn't seem to be much of that with Peter, 00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:20.080 verse 33. 00:09:20.540 --> 00:09:22.200 Lord, I'm ready to go with you, 00:09:22.360 --> 00:09:23.879 both to prison and to death. 00:09:25.280 --> 00:09:26.019 And Jesus said, 00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:28.600 I tell you, Peter the cock will not crow this day 00:09:28.600 --> 00:09:31.639 until you deny three times that you know me. 00:09:34.200 --> 00:09:36.639 There's Peter imagining that imprisonment and death 00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:40.080 won't be able to prize him from Jesus' side. 00:09:42.059 --> 00:09:44.500 And yet Jesus knows and tells him 00:09:44.500 --> 00:09:45.980 that before the night is out, 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:49.580 Peter will deny even knowing Jesus. 00:09:50.740 --> 00:09:55.600 So his first problem is his personal confidence, 00:09:55.960 --> 00:09:59.419 his ability to make promises to Jesus 00:09:59.419 --> 00:10:03.399 about his love and commitment and faithfulness to him. 00:10:03.399 --> 00:10:07.240 His second problem is what we might call his willful disobedience. 00:10:07.299 --> 00:10:10.139 Just try and track the deterioration with me here. 00:10:10.980 --> 00:10:12.079 At this point, 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:14.919 there is still strength to be found for Peter. 00:10:15.699 --> 00:10:18.419 Jesus has a strategy to stop his followers 00:10:18.419 --> 00:10:20.179 being overwhelmed by darkness. 00:10:20.319 --> 00:10:21.480 He has prayed for Peter. 00:10:21.840 --> 00:10:22.899 He has warned Peter. 00:10:23.259 --> 00:10:25.319 And now at the beginning of our particular section, 00:10:25.419 --> 00:10:26.199 in verse 39, 00:10:26.679 --> 00:10:28.699 as Jesus came out and went, 00:10:28.799 --> 00:10:29.539 as was his custom, 00:10:29.659 --> 00:10:30.480 to the Mount of Olives, 00:10:30.759 --> 00:10:32.120 and the disciples followed him, 00:10:32.120 --> 00:10:33.580 and when he came to the place, 00:10:33.899 --> 00:10:34.620 he said to them, 00:10:34.820 --> 00:10:38.720 pray that you may not enter into temptation. 00:10:39.659 --> 00:10:42.080 And temptation can mean either temptation to sin 00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:46.340 or meaning a time of severe trial and testing. 00:10:48.600 --> 00:10:51.980 And the Lord Jesus knew about the power of darkness. 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:55.039 He saw it as a clear and present danger. 00:10:55.039 --> 00:10:58.199 And he says to the disciples, 00:10:58.819 --> 00:11:04.500 pray that you will not enter into either temptation to sin 00:11:04.500 --> 00:11:07.759 or a severe time of trial and testing 00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:09.719 that will lead to temptation to sin. 00:11:11.139 --> 00:11:11.620 Again, 00:11:11.860 --> 00:11:13.740 because you know your way through Luke's gospel, 00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:14.959 back in chapter 11, 00:11:15.059 --> 00:11:15.659 verse 4, 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:17.500 in what we call the Lord's Prayer, 00:11:17.620 --> 00:11:18.679 he gave an example. 00:11:19.079 --> 00:11:20.939 He taught his disciples that they ought to pray, 00:11:21.059 --> 00:11:22.360 lead us not into temptation. 00:11:22.360 --> 00:11:27.320 And Jesus wanted his disciples to acknowledge, 00:11:27.480 --> 00:11:28.800 as we pray to our Heavenly Father, 00:11:29.240 --> 00:11:30.700 on a routine basis, 00:11:31.220 --> 00:11:34.320 that we are not personally able to stand in the hour of trial. 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:38.180 It's the opposite of what Peter felt with his self-confidence. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:41.360 The Lord Jesus wants us on our faces every day, 00:11:41.740 --> 00:11:41.980 saying, 00:11:42.100 --> 00:11:42.320 Lord, 00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:44.300 we will not stand in the hour of trial. 00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:46.899 That's the point of that clause. 00:11:46.899 --> 00:11:50.340 And you may recall that Jesus had also 00:11:50.340 --> 00:11:54.360 precisely warned them about this in chapter 21. 00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:57.620 Have a quick look back to verse 33 of chapter 21. 00:11:58.019 --> 00:11:58.419 He says, 00:11:58.500 --> 00:11:59.639 Heaven and earth will pass away, 00:11:59.939 --> 00:12:01.519 but unfounded sense 00:14:16.360 --> 00:14:18.059 of spiritual confidence 00:14:18.059 --> 00:14:21.519 and through willful disobedience, 00:14:21.659 --> 00:14:24.039 neglectful disobedience 00:14:24.039 --> 00:14:24.539 in prayer. 00:14:25.699 --> 00:14:26.959 Third thing we see, 00:14:27.479 --> 00:14:28.059 we notice, 00:14:28.219 --> 00:14:29.759 is Peter's careful distance. 00:14:31.839 -->
