of us, we've already heard Christmas messages quite a bit. 00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:19.580 But as today's the first day, that's actually, there's some white stuff outside. 00:03:19.580 --> 00:03:22.940 I think it's fitting that we have just one more Christmas message before we move on. 00:03:23.020 --> 00:03:27.420 And actually, as I was looking at what to preach this morning, I wanted to preach a Christmas 00:03:27.420 --> 00:03:28.580 message for the new year. 00:03:28.660 --> 00:03:34.560 And I really hope that there's something in today's message that will help define 2016 00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:35.560 for each one of us. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:41.720 And as we look at this passage that Paul's writing about what Jesus did, and how Jesus, 00:03:42.220 --> 00:03:44.760 he writes poetically, saying in the form of God. 00:03:44.759 --> 00:03:50.639 But you know from Paul's other writings, he's saying that Jesus, who is God, that he did 00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:57.239 not hold on to the omnipresence and the omnipower, those qualities of who he is as God, and the 00:03:57.239 --> 00:03:58.939 glory and majesty of heaven. 00:03:59.159 --> 00:04:06.039 But he emptied himself, being born as a frail human being, as he entered into the fullness 00:04:06.039 --> 00:04:07.120 of what it means to be human. 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:13.379 And for some reason, a couple months ago, I was just, I was reading this passage, and 00:04:13.379 --> 00:04:15.300 it hit me in a whole new way. 00:04:15.420 --> 00:04:19.160 For some reason, as I read this, that image of being underneath my covers came into my mind, 00:04:19.220 --> 00:04:24.660 and it hit me for the first time ever in this way of realizing, like, what was that, like, 00:04:25.540 --> 00:04:30.000 when we think of the sacrifice of Jesus, we so often think about him taking on the fullness 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:31.680 of our death and our pain on the cross. 00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:36.740 But it hit me, the sacrifice of Jesus in him entering into the fullness of being human. 00:04:37.620 --> 00:04:41.400 You'll remember that Jesus famously taught his disciples and us to pray, 00:04:41.860 --> 00:04:43.180 our Father who art in heaven. 00:04:43.840 --> 00:04:47.639 And I never had thought about it until then, that when Jesus said, our Father who art in 00:04:47.639 --> 00:04:50.720 heaven, you and I would imagine what heaven is like. 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:54.160 But Jesus, it wasn't an imagination for him, it was a memory. 00:04:54.680 --> 00:05:00.319 As he speaks of the Father in heaven, the Son of God, eternally existent, 00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:04.879 had spoken, it was the Logos speaking the word, the universe into creation. 00:05:05.540 --> 00:05:07.079 He dwelt in heaven. 00:05:07.639 --> 00:05:12.040 If you read Revelation, where John gets a glimpse of what heaven is, you'll see that 00:05:12.040 --> 00:05:17.839 the Lamb of God there at the throne, and you have the elders bowing before him, 00:05:18.180 --> 00:05:22.279 and you have the angels and the seraphim and stuff that you and I can't even picture, 00:05:22.620 --> 00:05:25.459 just worshiping, crying out, holy, holy, holy is he. 00:05:25.459 --> 00:05:32.000 As Jesus says, our Father who art in heaven, he knows, and there's such a beautiful memory 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:32.579 for him. 00:05:33.019 --> 00:05:37.500 And then as he says, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, 00:05:37.979 --> 00:05:42.519 it's not just a wishful thinking for him, or imagine what that would talked about how sometimes we can feel as if Jesus can't really relate to us in our human temptation. 00:07:48.900 --> 00:07:50.000 Because he's God. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:55.740 I mean, we all believe that Jesus is God and is fully God, fully man. 00:07:55.980 --> 00:07:59.259 But when push comes to shove, we often think of him just as fully God. 00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:04.079 As if he had some kind of get-out-of-jail-free card, like get-out-of-temptation-free card, 00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:06.899 which when he was feeling tempted, he'd just be like, I'm God. 00:08:07.259 --> 00:08:08.339 And then he can get out of it. 00:08:08.759 --> 00:08:09.899 That's not what the Bible teaches. 00:08:10.040 --> 00:08:12.500 The Bible teaches he's fully God, but also fully man. 00:08:12.759 --> 00:08:14.480 And he fully experienced temptation. 00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:19.339 I remember George speaking to us about how, I think he was borrowing from G.K. Chesterton, who said that. 00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:25.500 That it is, the man who gives into temptation right away knows very little of the power of temptation. 00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:31.519 But the one who resists and resists and resists temptation knows much of the power of temptation. 00:08:31.879 --> 00:08:35.539 Because when you give into temptation right away, when you just gratify right away, 00:08:35.840 --> 00:08:38.740 you don't experience much of what temptation is. 00:08:38.740 --> 00:08:44.440 But as you resist, and as you resist, and as you resist, you know so much of what that is. 00:08:44.899 --> 00:08:48.080 And Jesus never giving in to the many temptations. 00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:52.440 The Bible tells us that he experienced every form of temptation. 00:08:52.600 like the moments before all of that? 00:09:13.419 --> 00:09:16.639 He knows he's going to have a crown of thorns pressed into his flesh, 00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:19.620 and that he's going to bear the fullness of our sin, 00:09:20.039 --> 00:09:21.560 and the fullness of death on the cross. 00:09:21.620 --> 00:09:22.360 He knows all that. 00:09:22.360 --> 00:09:27.060 What was it like the moments before he took that on? 00:09:27.879 --> 00:09:31.399 In some ways, I think it's akin to us being in that happy place 00:09:31.399 --> 00:09:34.320 and underneath your covers realizing it's go time. 00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:37.300 But in so many ways, it's obviously so different. 00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:45.360 And the power of this image and how I hope Christmas will define our 2016 00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:47.340 and is a sermon for the New Year's 00:09:47.340 --> 00:09:50.480 is that Paul is writing about the sacrifice of Jesus 00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:53.259 and in him emptying himself for us. 00:09:53.580 --> 00:09:58.680 He's writing about this as Jesus being, that being our example. 00:09:59.159 --> 00:10:03.060 And so the first point today is that Jesus is our true example 00:10:03.060 darkness has not overcome it. 00:10:42.820 --> 00:10:46.320 And Jesus entering into the frailty of the human condition, 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:47.900 and light has shone in the darkness 00:10:47.900 --> 00:10:50.260 and the darkness has not overcome it. 00:10:50.660 --> 00:10:55.840 Jesus is our example of what it means to enter into brokenness, 00:10:55.940 --> 00:10:56.800 enter into frailty, end the slave trade in England. 00:11:06.660 --> 00:11:08.379 I did my master's in history on this 00:11:08.379 --> 00:11:10.100 and one of the things that surprised me 00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:12.920 was that one of the core pieces 00:11:12.919 --> 00:11:15.579 that brought about the movement to end the slave trade 00:11:15.579 --> 00:11:18.439 was how the Christmas story captivated the hearts, 00:11:18.599 --> 00:11:21.699 the minds, the imaginations of these Anglicans in England 00:11:21.699 --> 00:11:23.979 and led them into politics, 00:11:24.099 --> 00:11:25.779 into all these various realms. 00:11:25.879 --> 00:11:27.659 And what was revolutionary about this 00:11:27.659 --> 00:11:30.360 is that the generation of Christians before them 00:11:30.360 --> 00:11:31.799 and the few generations before them 00:11:31.799 --> 00:11:34.719 of those who were serious followers of Jesus 00:11:34.719 --> 00:11:36.819 made sure to not go into politics, 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:38.939 made sure not to go into banking or finance 00:11:38.940 --> 00:11:42.680 or any of that stuff that was seen as part of the dark underbelly 00:11:42.680 --> 00:11:43.500 of human existence. 00:11:44.320 --> 00:11:47.160 Sometimes you'd find stories of the generation before them 00:11:47.160 --> 00:11:48.860 of politicians who became Christians 00:11:48.860 --> 00:11:50.340 and then they'd quickly leave politics 00:11:50.340 --> 00:11:52.380 because they wanted to walk in purity and righteousness 00:11:52.380 --> 00:11:54.280 and be real followers of Jesus. 00:11:55.180 --> 00:11:57.960 But William Wilberforce, this famous Anglican, 00:11:58.540 --> 00:12:01.500 in reading the Christian story in the Bible 00:12:01.500 --> 00:12:06.280 and seeing how God took on the frailty of the human condition 00:12:06.279 --> 00:12:08.860 and entered into the darkness and the brokenness 00:12:08.860 --> 00:12:10.039 and the filth of this earth, 00:12:10.740 --> 00:12:12.360 he, after becoming a Christian, 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:13.759 he was already a politician 00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:15.379 and he thought about leaving politics. 00:12:15.839 --> 00:12:17.179 But seeing the Christmas story, 00:12:17.259 --> 00:12:17.919 he thought, you know what? 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:22.059 I'm not going to leave this dark and messy world of politics. 00:12:22.379 --> 00:12:24.539 I'm going to enter right into the fullness of it. 00:12:24.959 --> 00:12:26.839 And like Jesus shone light in the darkness, 00:12:26.959 --> 00:12:28.199 I'm going to shine light in that darkness. 00:12:28.779 --> 00:12:30.879 And one of his best friends, his cousin Henry Thornton, 00:12:31.100 --> 00:12:34.100 he was really good with finances 00:12:34.100 --> 00:12:36.860 and as the Christmas story captivated his heart, 00:12:37.259 --> 00:12:39.460 he decided that he was going to enter into banking 00:12:39.460 --> 00:12:41.759 and I think he became the governor of the Bank of England. 00:12:42.980 --> 00:12:43.860 I'm pretty sure he did. 00:12:43.960 --> 00:12:46.779 He went on to be one of the most influential people 00:12:46.779 --> 00:12:48.580 involved in finance and banking in England. 00:12:49.019 --> 00:12:50.240 And that was a world at that time 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:51.460 that many Christians just thought 00:12:51.460 --> 00:12:54.600 that finance and banking is such a dark place. 00:12:54.720 --> 00:12:56.240 But he entered into the midst of it 00:12:56.240 --> 00:12:58.080 to bring light to all these other guys 00:12:58.080 --> 00:12:58.920 in finance and banking. as she became a Christian, 00:13:17.399 --> 00:13:19.180 she thought, I'm not going to leave this 00:13:19.180 --> 00:13:20.899 like the generations before me. 00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:22.259 I'm going to enter into the midst of it. 00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:24.399 What's the point of all that? 00:13:24.460 --> 00:13:26.100 The point is that they saw Jesus 00:13:26.100 --> 00:13:28.240 and what he did 00:13:33.419 --> 00:13:35.419 for what it means to be followers of Jesus. 00:13:36.100 --> 00:13:38.220 And truly we're called to be followers of Jesus. 00:13:38.519 --> 00:13:40.000 Often in North America today 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:41.240 when we talk about Christianity, 00:13:41.740 --> 00:13:43.919 we tend to think of it as a set of things 00:13:43.919 --> 00:13:45.080 we believe about I'd say, well, why would you go to heaven? 00:20:34.139 --> 00:20:35.279 They'd say, well, I'm a good person. 00:20:35.799 --> 00:20:36.339 What they're saying, 00:20:36.399 --> 00:20:37.460 even though they don't really believe 00:20:37.460 --> 00:20:38.539 in much of a spiritual realm, 00:20:38.720 --> 00:20:39.779 a lot of people, 00:20:40.119 --> 00:20:40.779 even our neighbors, 00:20:40.940 --> 00:20:43.119 believe that if they do enough good, 00:20:43.200 --> 00:20:44.460 they can earn their way 00:20:44.460 --> 00:20:46.299 into some beautiful afterlife. 00:20:48.160 --> 00:20:49.579 So that would be secular humanism. 00:20:49.639 --> 00:20:50.700 A lot of people believe that. 00:20:51.639 --> 00:20:53.019 Islam has five pillars. 00:20:53.139 --> 00:20:54.980 Judaism, 613 laws. 00:20:55.359 --> 00:20:55.879 And the idea is, 00:20:55.960 --> 00:20:57.759 if you do enough of these good things, 00:20:58.039 --> 00:20:59.319 that you're going to get your way into heaven. 00:20:59.319 --> 00:21:01.779 And Buddhism and other Eastern religions, 00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:03.480 the idea isn't so much what you do, 00:21:03.480 --> 00:21:05.440 but if you can learn to think rightly, 00:21:05.660 --> 00:21:07.960 you'll eventually be able to enter into nirvana, 00:21:08.099 --> 00:21:10.360 if you can detach yourself from the world around you. 00:21:10.740 --> 00:21:11.620 In all these religions, 00:21:11.779 --> 00:21:13.180 spiritualities are no religious, 00:21:13.440 --> 00:21:13.920 no thing. 00:21:14.339 --> 00:21:15.079 In all of this, 00:21:15.120 --> 00:21:16.460 it's about if we can think rightly, 00:21:16.599 --> 00:21:17.599 if we can act rightly, 00:21:17.700 --> 00:21:20.940 we'll climb our way into whatever that afterlife is. 00:21:26.579 about Jesus, 00:21:26.759 --> 00:21:27.980 God coming to earth 00:21:27.980 --> 00:21:29.240 and dying for us, 00:21:29.279 --> 00:21:31.160 is that heaven has come to earth. 00:21:31.160 --> 00:21:34.360 And so you and I can have true confidence, 00:21:34.759 --> 00:21:35.920 just like the people on the street, 00:21:36.019 --> 00:21:36.660 that we will, 00:21:36.759 --> 00:21:37.500 if we die tonight, 00:21:37.540 --> 00:21:38.140 we'll go to heaven 00:21:38.140 --> 00:21:39.900 and we'll spend eternity with them. 00:21:40.240 --> 00:21:42.680 And that we'll not only go to some so we see that Jesus is not only a great example, 00:22:02.860 --> 00:22:05.600 but he's also our all-sufficient sacrifice. 00:22:06.440 --> 00:22:07.759 And in the sacrifice of Jesus, 00:22:07.860 receive the power 00:22:20.440 --> 00:22:23.759 to begin to change from our failing 00:22:23.759 --> 00:22:25.220 of following his example, 00:22:25.220 --> 00:22:28.019 to begin to increasingly be 00:23:34.299 Here, as Paul writes about 00:23:34.299 --> 00:23:36.839 every knee bowing before Jesus is Lord, 00:23:36.920 --> 00:23:37.579 he's saying that, 00:23:38.059 --> 00:23:40.859 yeah, there are many kings out there in the world, 00:23:40.980 --> 00:23:43.099 but Jesus is king, 00:23:43.099 --> 00:23:44.339 he's Lord above all lords, 00:23:44.419 --> 00:23:45.719 he's king above all kings, 00:23:46.119 --> 00:23:49.119 and everyone is going to bow before him one day. 00:23:49.480 --> 00:23:50.959 We're living in a world where we know, 00:23:51.099 --> 00:23:53.779 though every
