Why do we have this passage? 00:00:45.780 --> 00:00:48.280 And why the Spirit? Why a voice from heaven? 00:00:48.579 --> 00:00:50.299 Why did Jesus need to be baptized? 00:00:50.299 --> 00:00:56.320 Well, to answer this, I want us to look at three key persons in this passage. 00:00:57.079 --> 00:01:00.399 Three persons who are revealed in this baptism. 00:01:00.599 --> 00:01:04.120 The Son, the Spirit, and the Father. 00:01:05.459 --> 00:01:08.159 We're going to look at these three persons in this story, 00:01:08.259 --> 00:01:12.099 and when we do, we will see why this baptism happens 00:01:12.099 --> 00:01:15.459 and why it's so significant for us today. 00:01:16.439 --> 00:01:18.239 But first, let's look at Jesus. 00:01:18.379 --> 00:01:20.239 Let's look at the Son, and this is my first point. 00:01:20.299 --> 00:01:21.500 The first thing to see, the Son. 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:25.219 So just look at the scene in front of us. 00:01:26.219 --> 00:01:28.659 John the Baptist is in the wilderness of Judea, 00:01:28.659 --> 00:01:30.899 out in the sticks, middle of nowhere, 00:01:31.019 --> 00:01:33.899 probably central Israel to the east, 00:01:34.679 --> 00:01:36.400 because John's at the River Jordan. 00:01:36.539 --> 00:01:39.939 The River Jordan is this big river that runs north to south 00:01:39.939 --> 00:01:41.719 to the east of Israel. 00:01:42.519 --> 00:01:44.400 And so John is out in the middle of nowhere, 00:01:45.179 --> 00:01:46.459 and what's he been doing there? 00:01:47.439 --> 00:01:49.319 Well, it's the best job description in the world. 00:01:49.859 --> 00:01:51.859 He's been preaching and baptising. 00:01:52.500 --> 00:01:53.280 It's the dream job. 00:01:54.379 --> 00:01:55.539 And look what he's been preaching. 00:01:55.659 --> 00:01:56.079 Verse 2. 00:01:57.500 --> 00:02:00.199 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:02:01.659 --> 00:02:04.739 And all sorts of folks are coming to him to be baptised. 00:02:04.739 --> 00:02:06.759 But what's this baptism all about? 00:02:06.899 --> 00:02:07.899 Well, look at verse 11. 00:02:09.120 --> 00:02:11.159 It's a baptism for repentance. 00:02:13.159 --> 00:02:15.539 And what were people doing when they were baptised? 00:02:15.599 --> 00:02:16.219 Verse 6. 00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:19.139 They were confessing their sins. 00:02:19.139 --> 00:02:24.459 This baptism is about being made right with God. 00:02:25.979 --> 00:02:29.079 Now, we don't need to think that this is a magical baptism 00:02:29.079 --> 00:02:30.879 that suddenly makes you sinless. 00:02:31.019 --> 00:02:32.759 No, just like our baptism, 00:02:33.579 --> 00:02:37.099 this is an outward sign of what needs to happen to the heart. 00:02:38.060 --> 00:02:39.479 Our sins need to be washed, 00:02:39.539 --> 00:02:41.239 and we need to be made right with God. 00:02:41.240 --> 00:02:44.540 And that's because all of John's ministry here, 00:02:44.600 --> 00:02:46.520 all that John is doing in this wilderness, 00:02:46.780 --> 00:02:50.100 is to get people ready for something. 00:02:51.020 --> 00:02:52.540 For something big. 00:02:53.760 --> 00:02:54.340 Verse 3. 00:02:55.219 --> 00:02:57.740 It's to prepare the way of the Lord. 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:02.320 John knows that the Lord is coming. 00:03:02.319 --> 00:03:07.019 God Almighty is coming here to earth. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:09.599 And so the heart of his message is, 00:03:09.799 --> 00:03:11.799 repent and be baptised. 00:03:12.680 --> 00:03:14.680 Your sins need to be dealt with. 00:03:14.799 --> 00:03:15.699 You need to be washed. 00:03:16.039 --> 00:03:17.659 Because God is
