Psalm, it kind of is a progression, and the first part of the Psalm, 00:03:58.599 --> 00:04:06.799 really, after He makes His introductory comment, which is the summary of the Psalm, truly God 00:04:06.799 --> 00:04:09.079 is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. 00:04:09.079 --> 00:04:15.199 He then goes on to express and explain His own situation or what had happened to Him. 00:04:15.199 --> 00:04:21.680 He's giving us a biography, an autobiography of what has happened in His spiritual life. 00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:23.519 He was drifting from God. 00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:26.480 Now, this is Asaph. 00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:35.280 This is a man of spiritual character, David's musical director, someone of spiritual significance. 00:04:35.280 --> 00:04:41.199 We would maybe call him a worship leader today, not in our context, but in many contexts it 00:04:41.199 --> 00:04:43.000 would be regarded as such. 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:46.759 Say, the deep, mature faith, you only need to look at some of the other Psalms he wrote, 00:04:46.759 --> 00:04:51.719 the Psalm 50 or Psalm 73, right through to 83, he was a man of deep conviction, a man 00:04:51.719 --> 00:04:54.560 of genuine and deep faith. 00:04:54.560 --> 00:04:59.879 And yet, this mature believer experienced spiritual drift. 00:04:59.879 --> 00:05:02.599 And the Psalm is really honest. 00:05:02.599 --> 00:05:07.920 This great leader shows and expresses, and under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, 00:05:07.920 --> 00:05:14.920 it's given to us, poor Asaph, as exposed in front of the Christian world for centuries 00:05:14.920 --> 00:05:19.199 as to his own heart, but that is God's way, isn't it? 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:22.319 He's honest and he's vulnerable. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:28.759 And that honesty and that vulnerability is a very important reality for us to remember 00:05:28.759 --> 00:05:34.360 and to consider in our Christian lives, especially I see here to big first section, verses 2 to 12, about the prosperity of the 00:06:07.399 --> 00:06:08.399 wicked. 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:10.040 He looks at people that aren't believers. 00:06:10.040 --> 00:06:14.879 He looks at people that don't belong to the God of Israel, who haven't been rescued and 00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:23.879 come under the wing of this sovereign Lord, and he sees them as just having a great time 00:06:23.879 --> 00:06:25.120 without having faith. 00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:29.800 And he really caricatures their lives in many ways. 00:06:29.800 --> 00:06:34.400 He's comparing But as for me, he says almost as a summary of all of that he's been saying, my feet had 00:08:38.960 --> 00:08:40.840 almost slipped. 00:08:40.840 --> 00:08:45.480 My steps had nearly, my feet had almost stumbled. 00:08:45.480 --> 00:08:48.960 My steps had nearly slipped. 00:08:48.960 --> 00:08:53.480 Tremendously honest about what he is experiencing. 00:08:53.480 --> 00:08:56.360 He'd almost lost his foundation. 00:08:56.360 --> 00:08:58.559 He'd become embittered. 00:08:58.559 --> 00:08:59.919 He was envious. 00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:02.439 He was covetous of a carefree life. 00:09:02.440 away from his relationship with the living God and his salvation. 00:09:12.400 --> 00:09:14.280 That's his testimony. 00:09:14.280 --> 00:09:17.600 And you know, that honesty is good. 00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:23.680 He's not glorying in it as we'll go on to see, but it's an honest reflection of how he was 00:09:23.680 --> 00:09:24.680 feeling. 00:09:24.680 --> 00:09:29.640 And there's a reminder, as we remind this morning, we're not the finished articles. 00:09:29.640 --> 00:09:31.000 We haven't all got it together. 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:34.440 I know we come at church and we pretend we've all honest with one another is so significant and so 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:48.960 important, his faith wavered. 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:56.480 But then he shares a really encouraging experience in verses 00:10:04.000 Maybe you feel that this evening. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.120 Your Christian faith is a weary some task. 00:10:08.120 --> 00:10:11.720 Then he goes on to say, until I went into the 00:10:17.399 He did the right thing. 00:10:17.399 --> 00:10:19.440 He went into the presence of God. 00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:25.800 He made his way back into that place in the Old Testament, which was the symbol and the 00:10:25.799 --> 00:10:30.799 reality of God's presence, the temple, the sanctuary, the place where the people of God 00:10:30.799 --> 00:10:37.199 met with their God in the Old Testament, where there was the priests, brought their sacrifices 00:10:37.199 --> 00:10:41.159 to the living God, where there was the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. 00:10:41.159 --> 00:10:49.159 And he goes to that place because it symbolizes and it reminds him of who his God is, the 00:10:49.159 --> 00:10:57.199 God who is among the people, the God who is the redeeming, the saving God who has taken 00:10:57.199 --> 00:10:59.399 his people out of slavery. 00:10:59.399 --> 00:11:02.559 And he knows that that's the place to go. 00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:04.199 Isn't that great? 00:11:04.199 --> 00:11:10.000 That's good for us this evening because it's reminding us that the place we take our complaints, 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:13.679 it legitimizes our complaints before the living God. 00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:19.039 It legitimizes us crying out to God in our weakness and in our struggles and our battles, 00:11:19.039 --> 00:11:26.000 but to go to God with it, to break the silence, to change the line of vision and to focus, 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:31.559 not to focus on the comparative realities around us, but to see God's perspective, 00:11:31.559 --> 00:11:39.319 to see what He sees and to understand what He wants us to do. 00:11:39.319 --> 00:11:46.399 We go not to a building, not to a physical temple, but we remind ourselves that when 00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:52.559 Christ died on the cross, which we will be remembering shortly, that as He did so, the 00:11:52.559 --> 00:11:57.879 curtain was ripped from the Holy of Holies from top to bottom so that our access is also 00:11:57.879 --> 00:12:04.159 to God, into His nearer presence through Jesus' the way, Jesus' the stairway, Jesus' 00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:08.639 the door, Jesus' our way into God's nearer presence. 00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:13.240 And we remind ourselves that it's because of what Christ has done and as we trust in 00:12:13.240 --> 00:12:19.120 Christ, we go to the living God, we go to our Father himself that things were not quite as they seem and he learns about the lost, 00:13:43.320 --> 00:13:47.040 he learns about himself and he learns about God. 00:13:47.040 --> 00:13:50.040 He learns about the lost, he says, I went into the sanctuary and then I discerned the 00:13:50.040 --> 00:13:57.759 end and he recognizes, he uses the same picture, the same illustration, he recognizes not him 00:13:57.759 --> 00:14:02.520 that's on slippery ground, it's those who are not believers that are on slippery ground 00:14:02.520 --> 00:14:05.720 and he says, truly you've set them in slippery places. 00:14:05.720 --> 00:14:10.519 And there's that, he comes to that place as a difficult reality for us, a difficult truth 00:14:10.519 --> 00:14:17.120 but we can only see it through the prism of the cross because the cross is where we see 00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:21.279 God's justice and His love, the reality of judgment. 00:14:21.279 --> 00:14:28.800 God is both just and right and the know acceptance and belonging because He was, the Son was forsaken on the cross 00:15:39.319 --> 00:15:43.479 so that we wouldn't be forsaken and that we would trust in Him. 00:15:43.479 --> 00:15:48.079 And that's the reality that we remember when we celebrate the Lord's Supper. 00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:56.360 So there's a lost world, however successful and however popular, however rich --> 00:16:09.480 So He learned about their end, but He learned also about Himself, really interesting, what 00:16:09.480 --> 00:16:14.680 He says here in verse 22 and 23, 21 and 22, He says, when my soul was embittered, when 00:16:14.679 --> 00:16:20.120 I was pricked in heart, I was brutish and ignorant, I was like a beast before you. 00:16:20.120 --> 00:16:25.000 So He saw that His problem, His own problem was a heart problem. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:31.399 It was a problem with His own heart before the living God and that He had moved from 00:16:31.399 --> 00:16:38.719 trusting in God to being overly concerned with the circumstances around Him and the 00:16:38.719 --> 00:16:41.719 lives of people around Him. 00:16:41.720 --> 00:16:45.160 And He needed to recognize that He was living. 00:16:45.160 --> 00:16:52.720 He'd moved towards living without a sense of being God's or being made in God's image. 00:16:52.720 --> 00:17:02.440 It was almost like He reverted to being, or not reverted, but acted as if He didn't have 00:17:02.440 --> 00:17:08.839 a soul, that He was just part of the natural world, you know, like a human animal. 00:17:08.839 --> 00:17:09.839 I was brutish
