the concept of gratitude, of thankfulness. 00:02:12.060 --> 00:02:14.680 1 Thessalonians 5, 16 through 18, 00:02:15.479 --> 00:02:19.020 Paul is actually listing distinguishing marks of Christians. 00:02:20.079 --> 00:02:22.099 This is a place near the end of his letter where he's saying, 00:02:22.500 --> 00:02:25.939 these are the things, these are the qualities that should set you apart 00:02:25.939 --> 00:02:27.960 that make Christians unique in the world. 00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:31.979 And he lists three of them, and the third is gratitude. 00:02:31.979 --> 00:02:36.639 Now what's interesting about that, if you think about that, 00:02:37.879 --> 00:02:39.459 is it sort of raises the question, 00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:42.239 how could gratitude be unique to Christians? 00:02:44.299 --> 00:02:48.079 I mean, why is that something that Christians have the right to claim as theirs? 00:02:49.539 --> 00:02:53.739 In our culture right now, gratitude is one of the most popular things going. 00:02:53.959 --> 00:02:56.319 Everybody loves the idea of gratitude. 00:02:56.500 --> 00:02:59.899 We've talked about some controversial things in this church over the years. 00:02:59.899 --> 00:03:01.939 This is not one of those things. 00:03:01.979 --> 00:03:04.719 There's nothing controversial about gratitude. 00:03:05.939 --> 00:03:10.159 And the answer is, when Christians talk about gratitude, 00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:13.259 we're talking about something unique. 00:03:13.500 --> 00:03:15.659 It's actually something that is vastly different 00:03:15.659 --> 00:03:23.319 from what most people think of when they think of being thankful or cultivating gratitude, 00:03:23.319 --> 00:03:27.659 because it's rooted in our understanding of who God is 00:03:27.659 --> 00:03:30.060 and what he's done in the world and what he's done in our lives. 00:03:30.060 --> 00:03:35.640 And it's inseparably linked to that like a tree to its roots. 00:03:36.840 --> 00:03:41.180 So tonight we're going to compare Christian gratitude, 00:03:41.379 --> 00:03:44.819 what Paul talks about, what the Bible talks about in the Old and New Testament. 00:03:45.020 --> 00:03:47.319 We're going to compare that concept of gratitude 00:03:47.319 --> 00:03:52.379 with the sort of more prevalent, common cultural understanding of gratitude, 00:03:52.379 --> 00:03:56.039 which we'll call hashtag gratitude. 00:03:57.840 --> 00:03:59.139 And I'm not being snarky. 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:02.419 It's just better than saying the common cultural understanding of gratitude in the bourgeois spirituality of late modern America. 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.080 Virtually any episode of Oprah, any self-help book, any corner yoga class, 00:05:46.220 --> 00:05:50.760 you will emerge having been encouraged to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. 00:05:51.960 --> 00:05:58.080 If you look at mainstream publications like Time, the New York Times, Scientific American, 00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:06.379 they are regularly putting out articles that extol the virtues and the benefits of gratitude in your life. 00:06:06.539 --> 00:06:12.860 There was actually an NPR special that aired last, it was around Thanksgiving last year. 00:06:13.539 --> 00:06:15.539 And it was hosted by Susan Sarandon. 00:06:15.719 --> 00:06:20.139 And it was a one-hour special on all of the benefits of gratitude. 00:06:20.139 --> 00:06:21.300 Maybe you caught this. 00:06:22.219 --> 00:06:25.159 There are foundations like the John Templeton Foundation, 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:31.860 who give millions of dollars to gratitude research. 00:06:31.979 --> 00:06:37.519 People like Robert Emmons, who studies what is called the science of gratitude. 00:06:37.519 --> 00:06:38.519 Right? 00:06:39.339 --> 00:06:43.379 So it turns out that gratitude not only makes us feel happier, 00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:47.740 but it can also boost our immune system and lower our blood pressure. 00:06:48.699 --> 00:06:50.839 So gratitude has a lot of benefits. 00:06:51.039 --> 00:06:51.879 It's a good thing. 00:06:51.959 --> 00:06:54.759 We should be thankful for thankfulness. 00:06:55.159 was written by Barbara Ehrenreich. 00:07:13.100 --> 00:07:17.360 And she wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times in December. 00:07:17.579 --> 00:07:18.660 And the title is this. 00:07:19.100 --> 00:07:31.439 It's good to express our thanks, of course, to those who deserve recognition. 00:07:32.539 --> 00:07:33.500 And then she sort of says, 00:07:33.620 --> 00:07:35.339 But let's admit it. 00:07:36.199 --> 00:07:40.159 This gratitude is really about you and how you can feel better. 00:07:41.740 --> 00:07:46.299 So she's noting that most of the focus with what we're calling hashtag gratitude 00:07:46.299 --> 00:07:49.459 is on the one giving thanks. 00:07:49.459 --> 00:07:57.459 So all the benefits that come when we generate feelings of thankfulness. 00:07:58.259 --> 00:08:15.159 --> 00:08:15.480 She says, 00:08:15.560 --> 00:08:20.759 All you have to do is to generate within yourself the good feelings associated with gratitude 00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:23.600 and then bask in its warm, comforting glow. 00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:28.060 If there's any loving involved in this, it is self-love. 00:08:28.060 --> 00:08:33.000 And the current hoopla around gratitude is a celebration of onanism. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:35.080 You can look that one up later. 00:08:36.980 --> 00:08:39.340 Gratitude with no giver in mind. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:43.899 Thankfulness with no gift giver in mind. 00:08:44.559 --> 00:08:46.960 Gratitude simply for the sake of gratitude 00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:51.019 is really just a form of self-gratification, she's saying. 00:08:51.019 --> 00:08:56.980 And it really only enhances our narcissistic tendencies. 00:08:57.500 --> 00:08:59.519 It's a form of self-help. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:04.100 So by contrast, Paul calls us to a kind of gratitude 00:09:04.100 --> 00:09:07.299 that has a very specific object outside of ourselves 00:09:07.299 --> 00:09:08.980 and that object is God. 00:09:11.179 --> 00:09:12.439 Now why would he say that? 00:09:12.539 --> 00:09:15.120 Well, places like James 1.17 tell us. 00:09:16.319 --> 00:09:17.699 It says in James 1.17, 00:09:17.700 --> 00:09:22.120 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above coming down from the Father. 00:09:23.379 --> 00:09:26.300 So this is something that Paul, that James, that the apostles understood 00:09:26.300 --> 00:09:28.960 that every good gift, 00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:35.080 every good gift is a gift from God. 00:09:35.320 --> 00:09:35.800 Everything. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:37.360 Now most of the time, 00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:41.980 these are things that come through people into our lives. 00:09:42.740 --> 00:09:44.160 But what they recognize 00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:49.559 is that that gift is ultimately something that has come from God. 00:10:24.399 and your mom is like, 00:10:24.440 --> 00:10:25.560 you've got to write that thank you note. 00:10:25.639 --> 00:10:26.440 You haven't done that yet. 00:10:26.620 --> 00:10:28.560 You Scripture, 00:10:52.560 --> 00:10:54.440 I was really struck again 00:10:54.440 --> 00:10:57.660 by what Paul says in Romans 121. 00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:00.580 He's diagnosing the human condition 00:11:00.580 --> 00:11:01.620 and listen to what he says. 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:03.600 He says, 00:11:03.600 --> 00:11:05.220 For although they knew God, 00:11:06.620 --> 00:11:09.019 these are people in the fallen world, 00:11:10.180 --> 00:11:12.180 people like us apart from Jesus. 00:11:12.420 --> 00:11:12.800 He says, 00:11:13.159 --> 00:11:14.220 For although they knew God, 00:11:14.300 --> 00:11:15.720 they did not honor him as God 00:11:15.720 --> 00:11:17.360 or give thanks to him, 00:11:18.279 --> 00:11:21.000 but they became futile in their thinking 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:23.920 and their foolish hearts were darkened. 00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:27.159 So look at this diagnosis from Paul. 00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:27.700 He's saying, 00:11:27.980 --> 00:11:30.180 when we stop giving 00:11:36.920 in the broader context, 00:11:37.020 --> 00:11:38.560 this is a place where Paul is talking about 00:11:38.560 --> 00:11:40.580 how we have exchanged the glory of God 00:11:40.580 --> 00:11:43.080 for the glory of the things that God has made. 00:11:44.360 --> 00:11:45.960 So when we cut God off 00:11:45.960 --> 00:11:47.300 and when we cease to acknowledge 00:11:47.300 -->
