all about the gospel of Jesus Christ 00:00:22.960 --> 00:00:28.120 because the book of Galatians is all about our freedom in Christ. 00:00:28.120 --> 00:00:33.740 And this gospel not only brings us into the kingdom of God, 00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:39.260 this same gospel helps us to live as citizens of this kingdom. 00:00:40.439 --> 00:00:47.820 So, Christ the King Church, on the very outset, I want to convince you of this. 00:00:49.480 --> 00:00:55.960 We're all in desperate need of the good news that the book of Galatians declares. 00:00:55.960 --> 00:01:02.340 Ongoing, desperate need of the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:01:03.420 --> 00:01:05.359 It's life-changing news. 00:01:06.180 --> 00:01:10.099 And speaking of news, here we are in the fall, 00:01:10.299 --> 00:01:15.280 and there are young people who have gone back to school all over the nation. 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:22.099 And some of those young people are taking introductory to journalism classes. 00:01:23.420 --> 00:01:27.159 How to be a reporter of important news. 00:01:27.420 --> 00:01:31.760 And in order to write a headline, a catching front page headline, 00:01:32.040 --> 00:01:38.659 any journalist student needs to know the five W's and the H of a story. 00:01:39.099 --> 00:01:43.620 The who, what, when, where, why, and how of some kind of event. 00:01:43.620 --> 00:01:50.340 And so this morning, by way of an introductory scoop on the book of Galatians, 00:01:50.820 --> 00:01:59.080 I'm going to walk us through the who, what, when, where, why, and how of this good news. 00:02:00.219 --> 00:02:01.280 Breaking news. 00:02:02.820 --> 00:02:03.760 Life-changing news. 00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:11.659 The book of Galatians is the good news of what God has done through the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:02:11.759 --> 00:02:16.200 So let's start by talking about the who of the book of Galatians. 00:02:16.259 --> 00:02:19.700 And if you haven't already, would you open up to the book of Galatians? 00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:27.780 And in the very first verse, we learn about the person who wrote this, Paul, an apostle. 00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:33.280 We're going to learn in chapter 2 a little bit more about Paul's story. 00:02:33.819 --> 00:02:34.680 He was a Jew. 00:02:35.740 --> 00:02:37.620 And he was converted to Christ. 00:02:37.840 --> 00:02:40.099 That history is in Acts chapter 9. 00:02:40.860 --> 00:02:49.780 And part of his conversion was the risen Christ calling him to proclaim Christ to non-Jews. 00:02:52.120 --> 00:02:52.659 Gentiles. 00:02:52.659 --> 00:03:01.819 And so what we have here is Paul writing this letter to the book to the Galatians. 00:03:02.579 --> 00:03:08.840 It's originally a letter to a group of churches because he couldn't be there with them. 00:03:09.699 --> 00:03:13.039 And he became aware of something going on in these churches. 00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:19.019 And so out of love for them, he writes the letter to these Galatian churches. 00:03:19.020 --> 00:03:23.580 So what you learn from Acts is that Paul was this apostolic missionary. 00:03:24.180 --> 00:03:26.380 He would travel from city to city. 00:03:26.820 --> 00:03:29.100 And he would preach Christ in these cities. 00:03:29.520 --> 00:03:34.660 And as people responded by faith to what they were hearing, what God had done for them through Christ, 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:40.160 he would gather all those who became Christians into a group of people called a church. 00:03:41.060 --> 00:03:46.020 And then he would establish that church on the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:03:46.020 --> 00:03:52.280 We'll learn more about Paul as we make our way through the book of Galatians. 00:03:52.580 --> 00:03:55.020 But here's a little bit about these Galatians. 00:03:55.980 --> 00:03:59.080 Notice in 1-2, Paul says, 00:03:59.340 --> 00:04:04.800 An apostle, not for men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead. 00:04:04.980 --> 00:04:05.360 Verse 2, 00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:10.060 And all the brothers who are with me to the churches of Galatia. 00:04:10.060 --> 00:04:11.920 Not just one church. 00:04:13.060 --> 00:04:14.400 More than one church. 00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:15.340 Several. 00:04:16.939 --> 00:04:22.939 And these churches in Galatia were primarily made up of Gentiles. 00:04:23.160 --> 00:04:29.560 Non-Jews who had heard the gospel and having responded by faith that they had become Christians, 00:04:29.779 --> 00:04:31.439 they had become followers of Jesus. 00:04:31.439 --> 00:04:39.420 And so what this letter is, is a letter to them and all these churches. 00:04:40.219 --> 00:04:45.519 Tim Keller, in his very helpful commentary on the book of Galatians, 00:04:45.639 --> 00:04:50.420 says that there were social and racial divisions in the churches of Galatia. 00:04:50.519 --> 00:04:52.600 Because there were also Jews. 00:04:52.699 --> 00:04:57.100 There were Jewish synagogues all throughout the Mediterranean basin in the first century. 00:04:57.100 --> 00:05:01.879 And so Paul would go first to preach the gospel in a synagogue. 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:05.700 And if there wasn't a receptivity among the Jews, he would go then to the Gentiles. 00:05:06.240 --> 00:05:07.200 Preach the gospel to them. 00:05:07.700 --> 00:05:14.740 So what you need to understand is that the ground zero of the gospel itself took place in Jerusalem. 00:05:15.600 --> 00:05:19.180 The very first Christians were Jewish Christians. 00:05:19.180 --> 00:05:26.840 But the gospel quickly spread to Gentiles in the areas surrounding Jerusalem. 00:05:27.100 --> 00:05:31.420 Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the age, ends of the world. 00:05:33.160 --> 00:05:42.180 And what happened as a result of that is that you would have churches comprised both of Gentile Christians and Jewish Christians. 00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:50.360 And so there became some social and racial challenges for these churches to work through. 00:05:50.360 --> 00:05:57.860 For example, did a Gentile need to become a practicing Jew in order to be made right with God? 00:05:59.100 --> 00:06:00.759 That's what they were wrestling with. 00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:09.900 Now there was also a particular group of people in Galatia that were teaching something. 00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:19.980 They were insisting that Gentile Christians had to adopt the outward practices of the Mosaic Law. 00:06:20.360 --> 00:06:23.220 For example, they needed to be circumcised. 00:06:24.660 --> 00:06:26.879 They needed to observe some food restrictions. 00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:29.420 They needed to observe Jewish Holy Days. 00:06:29.520 --> 00:06:34.580 So that means if you were a Gentile working in Iconium in Galatia, 00:06:34.680 --> 00:06:37.759 you needed to take time away in order to get to Yom Kippur. 00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:54.319 Remember, what these teachers in Galatia were saying, though, is that in order for you to be right with God, Gentiles, 00:06:54.819 --> 00:07:01.339 not only do you have to believe in Jesus, but you had to obey the law of Moses. 00:07:01.339 --> 00:07:04.539 And then you will be right with God. 00:07:06.919 --> 00:07:09.159 So he's writing to these Christians. 00:07:09.639 --> 00:07:10.339 Paul is. 00:07:10.679 --> 00:07:13.039 Because he's gotten wind of this false teaching. 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:20.979 And he's writing to them because they're being disturbed by this false teaching. 00:07:20.980 --> 00:07:24.400 It's called legalism. 00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:29.960 Which brings me to not just the who, but now the what. 00:07:30.900 --> 00:07:36.360 And we see the what in verses 6 through 9 of chapter 1. 00:07:37.240 --> 00:07:44.400 Paul skips over any kind of thanksgiving for this church, which is typical in his other letters. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:49.780 He goes right from greetings to now getting down to business. 00:07:49.779 --> 00:07:50.739 Listen to what he says. 00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:56.939 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ 00:07:56.939 --> 00:07:59.359 and are turning to a different gospel. 00:08:00.500 --> 00:08:05.919 Not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 00:08:07.759 --> 00:08:12.739 This gets at the what of the book of Galatians. 00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:15.979 You might be thinking in your pew right now, 00:08:16.119 --> 00:08:18.099 I mean, what's the big deal, seriously? 00:08:18.100 --> 00:08:18.220 Seriously. 00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:22.560 We've got some confusion maybe in the churches of Galatia. 00:08:23.260 --> 00:08:27.500 I mean, it makes sense that there be some confusion between Jews and Gentiles who've come to Christ 00:08:27.500 --> 00:08:30.860 about what is our responsibility to the law of Moses. 00:08:31.020 --> 00:08:35.940 I mean, many of us have to wrestle through what is our responsibility to the law of Moses. 00:08:35.940 --> 00:08:41.580 Maybe you're just kind of thinking, well, that's not a big deal. 00:08:41.900 --> 00:08:42.720 Just work it out. 00:08:43.300 --> 00:08:43.820 Figure it out. 00:08:46.160 --> 00:08:51.620 But when you read verses 6 and 7, are you picking up on the urgency of the Apostle Paul? 00:08:51.620 --> 00:09:01.440 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel. 00:09:01.840 --> 00:09:03.720 There is urgency here. 00:09:04.580 --> 00:09:05.720 Great concern. 00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:14.679 What is going on, what's being taught in these churches in Galatia is far more dangerous than what we tend to think. 00:09:14.679 --> 00:09:16.339 This isn't just simply conduct. 00:09:20.059 --> 00:09:26.459 These teachers were insisting on a different gospel. 00:09:27.599 --> 00:09:29.799 Not the gospel of grace. 00:09:31.459 --> 00:09:35.699 They were insisting on a, quote unquote, gospel of works. 00:09:35.700 --> 00:09:46.540 A distorted gospel is contrary to the gospel of grace. 00:09:47.259 --> 00:09:48.759 The true gospel. 00:09:49.680 --> 00:09:54.200 A distorted gospel is no gospel at all. 00:09:54.700 --> 00:09:56.520 It is not good news. 00:09:56.519 --> 00:10:14.500 The Apostle Paul has come to realize that what is at stake here in these churches in Galatia with this teaching of a contrary gospel is the very nature of salvation. 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:19.620 How a sinner is made right with God. 00:10:19.620 --> 00:10:31.299 The false teachers in Galatia were saying that you can believe in Jesus, yeah, but in addition to that, you need to be circumcised. 00:10:31.799 --> 00:10:34.519 Or you need to observe the Jewish holy days. 00:10:34.779 --> 00:10:36.340 And then you'll be right with God. 00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:39.480 That's not good news. 00:10:41.060 --> 00:10:43.840 That's a salvation that depends on human effort. 00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:56.000 A gospel of works, quote unquote, gospel, cannot free sinners. 00:10:57.680 --> 00:11:00.180 It only enslaves them more. 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:13.820 And what you're going to see with this legalism is, legalism is the gospel plus obedience equals right standing with God. 00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:16.440 And that's not the gospel of grace. 00:11:18.200 --> 00:11:21.340 In chapter 2, verse 21, the Apostle Paul puts it this way, 00:11:21.480 --> 00:11:32.100 If righteousness, if right standing with God, if being right with God, if that were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. 00:11:32.100 --> 00:11:47.700 You see, obeying religious rules or even secular rules, you cannot obey your way into right standing with God. 00:11:47.700 --> 00:11:57.120 And what Paul does in the book of Galatians is he exposes this contrary gospel, which is no gospel at all. 00:11:57.580 --> 00:12:01.259 And then he explains the one true gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:12:01.660 --> 00:12:12.160 You see, the remedy of a false gospel that enslaves is the proclamation of the true gospel, which frees. 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:19.399 That's what we see Paul doing all throughout the book of Galatians. 00:12:19.480 --> 00:12:20.459 You see it in 1.3. 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:23.519 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:12:23.879 --> 00:12:24.419 Verse 4. 00:12:24.860 --> 00:12:30.659 Who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age according to the will of our God and Father. 00:12:31.059 --> 00:12:33.100 To whom be the glory forever and ever. 00:12:34.059 --> 00:12:34.379 Amen. 00:12:34.679 --> 00:12:35.259 That's gospel. 00:12:35.259 --> 00:12:40.460 If you turn to 3.13 and 14. 00:12:42.860 --> 00:12:47.500 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. 00:12:47.919 --> 00:12:49.439 For it is written, quote, 00:12:50.519 --> 00:12:53.679 Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, unquote. 00:12:54.019 --> 00:13:00.220 So that in Christ Jesus, the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles so that we might receive the promised spirit through faith. 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:00.879 Gospel. 00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:05.120 4.4 through 7. 00:13:05.259 --> 00:13:11.480 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his son, born of a woman, born under the law, 00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:17.200 to redeem those who were under the law so that we might receive adoption as sons. 00:13:17.759 --> 00:13:23.399 And because you are sons, God has sent the spirit of his son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 00:13:23.559 --> 00:14:19.399 And what was at stake then is at stake today because there continues to be distortions of the gospel. 00:14:19.399 --> 00:14:26.860 There's this thinking that we can all default into in this room. 00:14:28.199 --> 00:14:37.480 Thinking that, okay, faith in Jesus plus some kind of obedience on my behalf will keep me in right standing with God. 00:14:37.699 --> 00:14:38.539 That is a legalism. 00:14:38.539 --> 00:14:44.699 Let me try to help you ferret this out a little bit. 00:14:48.919 --> 00:14:50.639 On what basis does God love you? 00:14:54.599 --> 00:14:57.639 Maybe you're working through something like this. 00:14:57.639 --> 00:15:04.599 Anyone in the room wondering if God still loves you because you haven't read your Bible in three weeks? 00:15:06.059 --> 00:15:07.039 It's a legalism. 00:15:08.539 --> 00:15:15.240 Is anyone in the room wondering if God still loves you because you haven't shared your faith with anybody? 00:15:16.879 --> 00:15:24.319 Is anyone in the room wondering if God still loves you because you just haven't been consistent in your attendance on a Sunday morning service? 00:15:25.259 --> 00:15:29.219 Is anyone in the room wondering if God still loves you because you haven't quit smoking yet? 00:15:31.219 --> 00:15:36.199 As though your salvation depends on whether you're smoking or not. 00:15:36.200 --> 00:15:49.140 Paul is exposing legalism for what it is and he's providing the remedy in the one true gospel. 00:15:49.900 --> 00:15:53.360 What God has done through Jesus Christ, period. 00:15:55.060 --> 00:15:56.420 Nothing we can Galatians was most likely written around 48 AD. 00:16:42.900 --> 00:16:50.040 And the reason for that is it comes right after his first missionary journey to the area in which Galatia was. 00:17:10.680 --> 00:17:19.639 So for all purposes now, we're operating under the fact that this letter was written in AD 48, which makes it a really old letter. 00:17:19.640 --> 00:17:36.780 But this letter, written nearly 2,000 years ago, is as relevant today for us Gentiles as it was then for those Gentiles. 00:17:37.440 --> 00:17:38.920 It's about freedom. 00:17:42.820 --> 00:17:43.800 The 00:18:50.039 --> 00:18:51.960 Well, we have a lot in common with them. 00:18:52.940 --> 00:18:55.579 As Gentiles living in Kenosha in 2019. 00:18:57.319 --> 00:19:00.799 We all need to be reminded of the gospel. 00:19:00.799 --> 00:19:06.220 Because we all have this tendency to default into a legalism. 00:19:06.220 --> 00:19:16.779 The gospel of Jesus Christ transcends time and space. 00:19:17.640
