00:04:34.719 And I figured this was a safe passage to preach at Christ Church 00:04:34.719 --> 00:04:42.860 because this is all about how Christ is literally in everything. 00:04:42.860 --> 00:04:47.960 Now, this should come as no surprise to you. 00:04:48.180 --> 00:04:52.100 I hope I'm not coming preaching something that is radically new 00:04:52.100 --> 00:04:53.000 or radically hope we're going to see 00:05:00.500 --> 00:05:07.660 is how embedded and present and powerful 00:05:07.660 --> 00:05:13.699 the person of Christ is in every moment of our lives. 00:05:14.699 --> 00:05:17.079 Because if you've been a follower of Jesus for some time, 00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:20.199 you believe in Jesus, you worship Christ, 00:05:20.379 --> 00:05:22.220 you understand who he is. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:25.079 But I think a lot of us just don't really 00:05:25.079 --> 00:05:28.879 experience the constant awareness 00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:32.279 of how present Jesus is. 00:05:32.979 --> 00:05:34.939 I think that matters in two big ways. 00:05:35.099 --> 00:05:37.959 First, because as we walk around as individuals, 00:05:38.180 --> 00:05:41.240 as we try to live our lives and figure out what to do 00:05:41.240 --> 00:05:43.159 and make decisions and deal with our emotions 00:05:43.159 --> 00:05:45.659 and do all these things that the world requires of us, 00:05:46.399 --> 00:05:50.599 we're not always aware of Christ's role 00:05:50.599 --> 00:05:54.019 in that detail of life. 00:05:55.079 --> 00:05:58.479 And then secondly, as we come together as a church 00:05:58.479 --> 00:06:01.180 and we worship and we try to get to know people 00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:04.459 and we have studies and we eat fellowship lunches 00:06:04.459 --> 00:06:05.719 and all these kinds of things, 00:06:06.039 --> 00:06:08.539 sometimes we're not even aware of the role 00:06:08.539 --> 00:06:13.159 that Christ plays here among us as a community. 00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:16.240 And so what's beautiful about this passage 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:18.740 is it really lays out both of those things. 00:06:18.819 --> 00:06:22.659 It talks about how Christ is prominent that the Apostle Paul gives. 00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:26.500 The first one is this phrase, 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:29.360 the image of the invisible God. 00:07:29.899 --> 00:07:30.980 See if that gets something you see, 00:07:41.020 --> 00:07:44.980 but an invisible God is something that can't be seen. 00:07:45.780 --> 00:07:48.740 And so it's a conflict even in the language 00:07:48.740 --> 00:07:51.020 that Jesus makes visible 00:07:51.020 --> 00:07:54.720 what otherwise would be invisible. 00:07:55.560 --> 00:07:58.220 The Greek word there is the Greek word for icon. 00:07:59.060 --> The image of the invisible God. 00:08:27.319 --> 00:08:30.860 He's also the firstborn of all creation. 00:08:31.900 --> 00:08:32.720 Now this is interesting 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:35.060 because particularly in the ancient world, 00:08:35.059 --> 00:08:37.399 and it's still true in a lot of cultures today, 00:08:37.479 --> 00:08:40.539 being the firstborn was very important. 00:08:41.019 --> 00:08:43.359 The firstborn had certain privileges, 00:08:43.899 --> 00:08:45.599 had certain responsibilities. 00:08:46.439 --> 00:08:50.259 The firstborn was kind of the leader of the family. 00:08:50.859 --> 00:08:52.339 Now what's important here, 00:08:52.439 --> 00:08:55.759 this Greek word firstborn is prototokos. 00:08:55.899 --> 00:08:59.419 Proto is the first and tokos is the word for born. 00:08:59.619 --> 00:09:00.059 The prototokos, 00:09:00.759 --> 00:09:02.239 what's important here is not so much 00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:03.440 that he was the firstborn 00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:05.519 because he wasn't really born, 00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:09.799 but that he is the inheritor 00:09:09.799 --> 00:09:12.560 of what God has designed. 00:09:13.340 --> 00:09:15.379 That he is a unique representation 00:09:15.379 --> 00:09:18.180 of who God is. 00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:21.539 He is first of all the world 00:09:21.539 --> 00:09:23.279 in terms of his importance. 00:09:23.379 00:09:42.059 and things on earth. 00:09:43.179 --> 00:09:44.919 Now when we read that phrase, 00:09:45.079 --> 00:09:47.620 we think about the heavens 00:09:47.620 --> 00:09:48.919 and to us, 00:09:49.059 --> 00:09:50.600 because we're kind of in this religious setting, 00:09:50.679 --> 00:09:52.480 we think heaven in a religious sense, 00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:55.019 but what Paul probably meant by heavens 00:09:55.019 --> 00:09:57.000 was more the sky, 00:09:57.659 --> 00:09:58.480 the space. 00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:00.420 So I want you to imagine, 00:10:00.560 --> 00:10:02.700 some of you maybe have been in settings like this 00:10:02.700 --> 00:10:03.500 where you are, 00:10:04.379 --> 00:10:07.259 where you're somewhere that's very, very dark 00:10:07.259 --> 00:10:08.899 and you're there at night. 00:10:09.060 --> 00:10:10.620 Maybe you're on a camping trip 00:10:10.620 --> 00:10:12.980 or you're out on the ocean somewhere. 00:10:13.519 --> 00:10:15.279 And if you imagine in your mind 00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:18.080 what the heavens look like 00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:20.220 when you're not in a city 00:10:20.220 --> 00:10:23.020 and you see the stars, 00:10:23.860 --> 00:10:27.100 you can see the stripe of the Milky Way. 00:10:28.360 --> 00:10:31.820 And the Apostle Paul is describing that image 00:10:31.820 --> 00:10:33.780 to people in the first century 00:10:33.780 --> 00:10:38.420 that Jesus is creator of all of those things. 00:10:39.480 --> 00:10:41.759 And so we can imagine it from their perspective, 00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:43.560 but we could also imagine it from our perspective 00:10:43.560 --> 00:10:44.960 because we see those stars 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:47.900 and we know a little bit more about what they are. 00:10:48.660 --> 00:10:51.620 We know that each of those stars are suns 00:10:51.620 --> 00:10:54.879 with planets in their own galaxies, 00:10:55.960 --> 00:10:59.259 in a size of space 00:10:59.259 --> 00:11:02.280 that is completely unfathomable. 00:11:03.400 --> 00:11:08.040 And Jesus created all of that. 00:11:08.900 --> 00:11:10.200 That's what we're told. 00:11:10.860 --> 00:11:13.040 The Jesus that we phrase 00:11:26.299 --> 00:11:29.100 that he is over all powers, 00:11:29.179 --> 00:11:31.939 whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities. 00:11:32.299 --> 00:11:34.240 And these words signify 00:11:34.240 --> 00:11:36.700 different kinds of authorities 00:11:36.700 --> 00:11:38.879 in the ancient world. 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:40.700 There were political authorities, 00:11:40.939 --> 00:11:42.259 there were religious authorities, 00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:43.620 there were civic authorities, 00:11:43.620 --> 00:11:45.019 there were local authorities. 00:11:45.399 --> 00:11:47.299 And the point that Paul is trying to make here 00:11:47.299 --> 00:11:50.659 is that Jesus' authority is over all of those. 00:11:52.200 --> 00:11:54.000 For us then, we could imagine, 00:11:54.100 --> 00:11:55.779 and I want to invite you just to think in your head 00:11:55.779 --> 00:11:58.919 about what kinds of people 00:11:58.919 --> 00:12:01.620 have authority over you. 00:12:01.620 --> 00:12:04.220 For kids, maybe it's your parents. 00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:06.379 For students, your teachers. 00:12:07.279 --> 00:12:09.460 If you have a job, then your employer. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:12.120 If you started a company, then it's your investors. 00:12:13.060 --> 00:12:14.299 There's local authorities. 00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:17.539 There's whoever runs Berkeley or the city you 00:12:28.080 who have some level of authority over our lives. 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:31.240 Some of that we're grateful for. 00:12:31.860 --> 00:12:35.300 A lot of it, we are less than grateful for. 00:13:34.600 Each of those phrases is uniquely important. 00:13:35.439 --> 00:13:37.039 Everything is created in him. 00:13:37.480 --> 00:13:38.319 And we don't, 00:13:38.840 --> 00:13:41.240 this phrase occurs all throughout the New Testament 00:13:41.240 --> 00:13:44.259 where we have this idea of being in Christ. 00:13:44.259 --> 00:13:47.419 Christ, as if Christ were a sphere. 00:13:48.399
