elements? 00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:46.700 It is important that we understand what we're doing. 00:00:48.100 --> 00:00:53.299 It's important that we have a right understanding of the bread and the cup. be a false representation of what Jesus intends for it to be. 00:01:12.759 --> 00:01:19.000 More professing Christians misunderstand the meaning of the Lord's Supper than understand it correctly. Catholic Church teaches about the Lord's Supper is not biblical. 00:01:33.540 --> 00:01:36.180 That's the first point I want us to look at this morning. 00:01:36.760 --> 00:01:41.000 The Roman Catholic view of the Lord's Supper is called transubstantiation. 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:41.640 Transubstantiation. 00:01:42.579 --> 00:01:49.460 As I was going through some notes, files, looking at things I have done, taught on when we do the Lord's Supper, 00:01:50.460 --> 00:01:57.980 I could not believe it, but I've never taught that the Roman Catholic view of the Lord's Supper is incorrect. 00:01:57.980 --> 00:02:06.460 I apologize for that because a part of the work of a pastor in teaching is to point out false teaching. 00:02:06.459 --> 00:02:11.900 And as you'll see, this is false teaching. 00:02:12.699 --> 00:02:15.299 The Roman Catholic teaching about the Lord's Supper says this. 00:02:15.459 --> 00:02:20.039 First, when the elements, the bread and the wine, 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:24.240 when the elements of the Lord's Supper are consecrated by a priest, 00:02:25.019 --> 00:02:31.459 they say a literal metaphysical change takes place in those elements. 00:02:31.460 --> 00:02:42.719 They say that the substance of the bread and the wine is miraculously transformed into the literal body and blood of Jesus Christ. 00:02:43.879 --> 00:02:52.120 Roman Catholic teaching says the bread and the wine still look, feel, taste the same, 00:02:52.120 --> 00:03:01.480 but their substance changes and becomes the actual body and blood of Christ. 00:03:02.759 --> 00:03:06.000 The Roman Catholic teaching also says this. 00:03:06.640 --> 00:03:10.780 Whenever the Lord's Supper is observed, which they call the Mass or Eucharist, 00:03:10.780 --> 00:03:23.500 Jesus Christ is being sacrificed again on behalf of the participants in order to atone for their sins. 00:03:25.360 --> 00:03:30.900 Now, there are numerous reasons why Roman Catholic theology is wrong about this, 00:03:31.639 --> 00:03:33.420 but I want us to see two. 00:03:33.419 --> 00:03:42.859 First, it fails to recognize the symbolism Jesus was using when he instituted the Lord's Supper. 00:03:43.659 --> 00:03:47.060 I want you to look on the screen at a verse from Matthew's Gospel. 00:03:48.099 --> 00:03:54.939 In that section of Matthew 26, the disciples and Jesus were observing the Passover meal together 00:03:54.939 --> 00:04:00.879 when Jesus instituted what we're doing today, the Lord's Supper. 00:04:00.879 --> 00:04:10.439 The Scripture says, now, as they were eating, Jesus took bread and after blessing it, broke it and gave it to the disciples and said, 00:04:10.680 --> 00:04:14.000 take, eat, this is my body. 00:04:15.560 --> 00:04:22.699 Now, if you had been there, if you'd been one of the disciples, what would you have thought? 00:04:23.899 --> 00:04:27.540 Jesus is standing there right in front of you. 00:04:27.540 --> 00:04:39.460 He takes a loaf, broke it, gave it to the disciples and said, this is my body or take, eat, this is my body. 00:04:40.460 --> 00:04:46.939 You would have known, it would have been obvious that he was using symbolic language. 00:04:46.939 --> 00:04:59.879 No one sitting around that table or reclining around that table that day thought that Jesus was referring to the bread as his literal body. 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:06.639 Jesus was in the habit of using symbolic language in his teaching about himself. 00:05:06.899 --> 00:05:12.339 For an example, in John 15, he says, I am the vine, you are the branches. 00:05:12.339 --> 00:05:17.799 Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. 00:05:18.019 --> 00:05:20.839 For apart from me, you can do nothing. 00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:25.299 On another occasion, Jesus said, I am the door. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.839 If anyone enters by me, he will be saved. 00:05:30.159 --> 00:05:35.039 And then another occasion, he referred to himself as bread again, the bread of life. 00:05:35.139 --> 00:05:35.559 Look at it. 00:05:35.560 --> 00:05:37.959 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. 00:05:38.360 --> 00:05:40.420 Whoever comes to me shall not hunger. 00:05:40.780 --> 00:05:43.800 Whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:57.860 Now, it is obvious that Jesus uses words like a vine, a door, bread as figurative language. 00:05:57.860 --> 00:06:03.939 To symbolize something about who he is or what he does. 00:06:05.939 --> 00:06:10.900 No rational person would think otherwise, would they? 00:06:12.540 --> 00:06:20.060 What the Roman Catholic Church teaches about the bread and wine becoming the literal body and blood of Jesus is irrational. 00:06:22.139 --> 00:06:23.780 It is not biblical. 00:06:25.520 --> 00:06:27.580 It defies common sense. 00:06:27.860 --> 00:06:33.540 The Roman Catholic view is also wrong for a more important reason. 00:06:34.639 --> 00:06:41.939 It fails to recognize the finality and completeness of Jesus' death on the cross for our sins. 00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:53.259 The New Testament is clear in numerous places that Christ's death on the cross for our sins was a once and for all sacrifice. 00:06:53.259 --> 00:06:58.039 That it was something that was final. 00:06:58.039 --> 00:06:58.099 It was final. 00:06:59.039 --> 00:07:00.759 And it was never to be repeated. 00:07:00.759 --> 00:07:08.439 In fact, when Jesus died on the cross, one of the last things he said was, it is finished. 00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:11.360 The penalty for our sin had been paid. 00:07:12.099 --> 00:07:13.099 He said, it is finished. 00:07:13.699 --> 00:07:14.899 And he gave up his spirit. 00:07:14.899 --> 00:07:19.659 But the book of Hebrews has the most to say about this. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:22.219 I want you to look with me in Hebrews chapter 9. 00:07:22.220 --> 00:07:29.440 We're talking about how Jesus' death on the cross was a one-time event. 00:07:30.900 --> 00:07:31.980 Once and for all. 00:07:32.180 --> 00:07:34.220 A final, complete sacrifice. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:35.140 Look. 00:07:35.139 --> 00:07:42.159 For Christ has entered not into holy places made with hands, but into heaven itself. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:45.839 Now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 00:07:46.479 --> 00:07:55.079 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own. 00:07:55.079 --> 00:08:05.060 But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 00:08:05.939 --> 00:08:11.939 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 00:08:11.939 --> 00:08:19.759 So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time. 00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:25.339 Not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. 00:08:26.519 --> 00:08:37.639 The Roman Catholic teaching that Jesus is being sacrificed again and again every time the Lord's Supper is observed. 00:08:38.899 --> 00:08:40.320 It's just wrong. 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:42.480 It's more than wrong. 00:08:42.580 --> a lot of people, you're thinking to yourself, well I've never believed that. 00:09:21.740 --> 00:09:22.420 That's good. 00:09:23.420 --> 00:09:25.420 But what do you believe? 00:09:26.700 --> 00:09:38.019 --> 00:09:41.639 What is happening as we observe the Lord's Supper? 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:43.480 Let's look at this. 00:09:43.800 --> 00:09:45.220 The biblical view of the Lord's Supper. 00:09:46.019 --> 00:09:49.980 A symbolic and spiritual presence of Christ. 00:09:49.980 --> 00:09:57.680 The bread and the wine or grape juice is what we're using. 00:09:59.180 --> 00:10:01.899 Symbolize the body and blood of Jesus. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:07.960 As we've already seen, Jesus often used symbols to describe himself. 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:17.300 Therefore, the most biblical, rational, and natural way to understand what Jesus meant when he instituted the Lord's Supper 00:10:17.300 --> 00:10:26.480 is that the bread and the wine or the bread and the juice are symbols of his body and his blood. 00:10:27.620 --> 00:10:28.180 You think? 00:10:28.179 --> 00:10:38.419 It does symbolize his broken body, his shed blood, that which happened on the cross as he died for our sins. 00:10:39.359 --> 00:10:41.359 That's not all these elements represent. 00:10:42.439 --> 00:10:46.620 Number two, the bread and wine represent the spiritual presence of Jesus. 00:10:46.620 --> 00:10:58.079 Many Protestant Christians emphasize that Christ is spiritually present in a special way when we partake of the Lord's Supper. 00:10:59.179 --> 00:11:02.699 Jesus promised to be present whenever believers come together. 00:11:03.559 --> 00:11:12.399 Anytime we join together with two or three others to pray, to worship, Jesus has promised to be with us. 00:11:12.479 --> 00:11:14.139 Look at what he said in Matthew 18. 00:11:14.139 --> 00:11:22.139 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. 00:11:22.139 --> 00:11:29.179 So every time we meet on Sunday, the Lord is here with us. 00:11:30.600 --> 00:11:32.679 It's a time of worshiping him. 00:11:33.519 --> 00:11:36.600 It's a time of talking to him in prayer. 00:11:37.600 --> 00:11:39.639 Listening to him as he speaks through his spirit. 00:11:39.639 --> 00:11:50.620 The idea that many people will emphasize a lot to think about is that if Jesus is present whenever two or three Christians come together for worship, 00:11:51.319 --> 00:11:59.279 he must be present in a special way whenever we gather together to worship and observe the Lord's Supper. 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:01.019 Well, that's true. 00:12:01.899 --> 00:12:13.959 But we need to be careful not to make the Lord's Supper so much of a mystical or mysterious experience that we don't really understand what's going on. 00:12:13.960 --> 00:12:28.580 The Lord's Supper or the New Testament does not actually say that Christ is present in a special way when we observe the Lord's Supper. 00:12:29.740 --> 00:12:30.879 It really doesn't. 00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:37.200 But never think that the Lord is not here. 00:12:37.620 --> 00:12:39.279 Never think that he is absent. 00:12:40.179 --> 00:12:43.039 The Lord is with us through his spirit wherever we go. 00:12:43.860 --> 00:12:50.460 In a special way when we gather together for worship, including observing the Lord's Supper. 00:12:51.399 --> 00:12:59.179 So it's not wrong for anyone in this room to think this observing, participating in the Lord's Supper, 00:12:59.179 --> 00:13:03.519 this is a very special time of worship. 00:13:04.519 --> 00:13:07.439 In fact, we all should think that. 00:13:08.759 --> 00:13:13.500 But the key to experiencing the presence of Jesus right now for all of us 00:13:13.500 --> 00:13:18.839 is that we must have a personal relationship with him through faith. 00:13:19.339 --> 00:13:20.099 That's the key. 00:13:22.379 --> 00:13:28.419 If you don't have a real relationship with Jesus, trusting him as your Savior and Lord, 00:13:29.179 --> 00:13:30.239 it's through faith, 00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:35.099 then this is not going to be anything to you, mean anything to you. 00:13:35.739 --> 00:13:38.259 Wayne Grudel points out the importance of our faith. 00:13:38.379 --> 00:13:39.039 Look at what he says. 00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:46.199 Yet we must not say that Christ is present apart from our personal faith. 00:13:46.659 --> something in your life 00:14:34.219 --> 00:14:36.419 God's been dealing with you about, 00:14:36.519 --> 00:14:37.639 but you won't give it up. 00:14:38.500 --> 00:14:39.740 You won't confess it. 00:14:39.779 --> 00:14:40.919 You won't turn from it. 00:14:40.919 --> 00:14:41.919 Or, 00:14:42.519 --> 00:14:46.659 if the best way to describe you would be, 00:14:46.779 --> 00:14:49.579 you've just sort of drifted away from a close relationship with the Lord, 00:14:49.779 --> 00:14:53.059 and you're just more or less indifferent to the things of God right now. 00:14:55.159 --> 00:14:57.740 look at 00:16:17.740 --> 00:16:21.279 as we actually partake of the bread and the cup 00:16:21.279 --> 00:16:21.700 in a moment. 00:16:22.539 --> 00:16:22.980 Number two, 00:16:23.080 --> 00:16:25.399 the Lord's Supper proclaims the gospel. 00:16:25.399 --> 00:16:27.860 What we're doing out is sort of like 00:16:27.860 --> 00:16:29.439 we're acting out 00:16:29.439 --> 00:16:33.079 the good news about Christ's death 00:16:33.079 --> 00:16:34.480 for our sins. 00:16:35.299 --> 00:16:37.600 Look at this verse from 1 Corinthians 11, 26. 00:16:38.439 --> 00:16:39.939 For as often as you eat this bread 00:16:39.939 --> 00:16:41.039 and drink this cup, 00:16:41.419 --> 00:16:43.620 you proclaim the Lord's death 00:16:43.620 --> 00:16:44.259 until he comes. 00:16:44.500 --> 00:16:45.379 You proclaim it. 00:16:45.500 --> 00:16:46.559 We're doing that. 00:16:47.399 --> 00:16:49.179 Baptist theologian Miller Derrickson 00:16:49.179 --> 00:16:50.379 explains it like this. 00:16:50.379 -->
