passage we're considering today is all about faith. 00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:44.960 We're looking at the second half of Hebrews chapter 11. 00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:53.600 If you are visiting us today, maybe in support of a loved one, you've landed in the middle of a series 00:05:53.600 --> 00:06:01.120 or towards the end of a series from the book of Hebrews and indeed in the second of two talks on Hebrews chapter 11. 00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:08.639 We saw in the first half of chapter 11 last week that faith is trusting the promises of God. 00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:14.800 Faith trusts God for things we do not yet have and things we do not yet see. 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:24.560 We also saw in the first half of Hebrews 11 that faith recognizes that not even death is an obstacle to the promises of God. 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:35.360 That's why the Bible can say in Hebrews 11 verse 13 that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all died in faith, 00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:38.439 not having received the things promised. 00:06:40.360 --> 00:06:45.879 It's why again it can say at the end of the chapter in the passage we just heard read in verse 39, 00:06:45.879 --> 00:06:54.000 Now of an even greater God's spirit. 00:08:43.799 --> 00:08:47.179 Hebrews 11 verse 40 says, 00:08:47.959 --> 00:08:52.699 The reason the ancients died in faith, not having received what was promised, 00:08:53.259 --> 00:08:59.659 was, verse 40, because God had provided something better for us. 00:08:59.659 --> 00:09:06.519 That apart from us, they should not be made perfect. 00:09:08.019 --> 00:09:09.539 It was for our sake. 00:09:10.679 --> 00:09:15.019 Promises that weren't yet fulfilled for believers before Christ, 00:09:15.579 --> 00:09:19.899 have now been fulfilled for us who believe in Christ. overcomes the world. 00:10:40.379 --> 00:10:43.500 In the second half of Hebrews 11, this is what I want us to see this morning, 00:10:43.840 --> 00:10:47.279 we see four reasons that faith overcomes the world. 00:10:48.920 --> 00:10:53.519 First, faith overcomes the world because it doesn't fear the world's power. 00:10:54.899 --> 00:11:00.519 That's what we see in the example of Moses in verses 23 to verse 27. 00:11:00.680 --> 00:11:03.560 Faith overcomes the world because it's unafraid. 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:06.220 Look at verse 23. 00:11:07.779 --> 00:11:14.100 By faith, Moses, when he Hebrews, 00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:36.779 who were at that time enslaved to the Egyptians, 00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:40.459 all the baby boys born to the Hebrews would be killed at birth. 00:11:40.460 --> 00:11:44.980 But rather than give him up to be killed, 00:11:45.139 --> 00:11:47.600 Moses' parents hid their child for three months. 00:11:47.860 --> 00:11:51.519 And then they put Moses in a basket among the reeds by the river, 00:11:51.660 --> 00:11:53.379 watched over by his older sister, 00:11:53.879 --> 00:11:56.320 where he was discovered by Pharaoh's daughter, 00:11:56.400 --> 00:12:01.600 who then protected and adopted the boy and raised him as her own. 00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:09.960 Moses' parents defied the decree of Pharaoh at considerable risk, 00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:11.060 no doubt, to themselves. 00:12:12.200 --> 00:12:13.240 They were unafraid. 00:12:13.960 --> 00:12:15.779 We see it in the actions of Moses himself. 00:12:15.879 --> 00:12:16.600 Verse 27. 00:12:16.600 --> 00:12:22.080 By faith, Moses left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, 00:12:22.980 --> 00:12:27.220 for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 00:12:28.600 --> 00:12:30.800 Moses defied as an adult. 00:12:30.899 --> 00:12:33.159 He defied and confronted Pharaoh. 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:37.440 He repeatedly called for the Israelites to be set free 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:40.399 so that they could serve the Lord. 00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:42.600 He didn't fear the king. 00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:45.379 He didn't fear the power of Egypt. 00:12:45.379 --> 00:12:49.700 He didn't fear the power of the world because he did fear God. 00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:53.939 He endured as seeing him who is invisible. 00:12:56.659 --> 00:13:01.240 Brothers, sisters, we don't need to fear worldly powers. 00:13:03.259 --> 00:13:05.820 We don't need to fear the power of the world. 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:08.960 Now, Christians, let me point out, 00:13:09.019 --> 00:13:13.120 Christians are always watching the news, 00:14:34.939 --> 00:14:37.740 although it's scarcely been reported in the news. 00:14:39.199 --> 00:14:43.000 10,000 people who rallied outside New South Wales Parliament 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:44.819 to protest a corrupt bill, 00:14:45.659 --> 00:14:49.539 a corrupt bill that turns nurses and midwives 00:14:49.539 --> 00:14:51.399 into abortionists. 00:14:54.240 --> 00:14:56.179 Thankfully, parts of the bill were struck down 00:14:56.179 --> 00:14:57.019 in the upper house. 00:14:57.339 --> 00:14:58.860 But the central part 00:14:58.860 --> 00:15:04.339 that allows midwives and nurses 00:15:04.339 --> 00:15:06.879 who should protect life 00:15:06.879 --> 00:15:08.959 instead to take life, 00:15:09.539 --> 00:15:12.719 that central part is passed 00:18:25.059 and gladly spent and gave that money 00:18:25.059 --> 00:18:26.180 in the service of others, 00:18:26.220 --> 00:18:27.940 in all those ways we heard about last week. 00:18:27.940 --> 00:18:36.980 Now, I know a young man who won thousands of dollars 00:18:36.980 --> 00:18:38.559 playing poker online. 00:18:38.559 --> 00:18:44.059 The money he won was all from other online gamblers. 00:18:45.319 --> 00:18:48.899 He was smarter at poker than those other players 00:18:48.899 --> 00:18:51.639 and so he won the money they lost. 00:18:51.859 --> 00:18:53.500 Their money became his.
