wrote these words. 00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:36.039 At the time when God breathed out Psalm 24, 00:04:36.279 --> 00:04:41.439 Jerusalem as the city of God was regarded by the hearers at the time, inside the walls of the city was seen as God's palace. 00:04:53.719 --> 00:04:56.839 The tabernacle was seen as God's royal court. 00:04:56.839 --> 00:05:02.699 And the ark of the covenant inside the Holy of Holies was seen as God's throne. 00:05:04.500 --> 00:05:06.199 You see that movement of three spheres, 00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:10.759 from the city walls to the tabernacle to the Holy of Holies. 00:05:13.719 --> 00:05:15.299 I think in this psalm, 00:05:16.179 --> 00:05:19.019 David walks us through those spheres, 00:05:19.359 --> 00:05:21.639 outside the walls of Jerusalem, 00:05:21.779 --> 00:05:22.620 so in the world, 00:05:22.620 --> 00:05:24.660 and then approaching the gates, 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:26.740 and then finally in the holy place. 00:05:28.699 --> 00:05:32.759 It's likely that God gave this psalm for a special occasion, 00:05:32.899 --> 00:05:37.220 but then it continued to be sung for the centuries by God's people. 00:05:37.560 --> 00:05:39.720 We don't know for certain what this occasion was. 00:05:40.199 --> 00:05:42.959 Some have guessed that maybe it was 2 Samuel 6 00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:44.740 when the ark is being brought, 00:05:45.459 --> 00:05:47.860 and now all the people are going to go outside the city gates 00:05:47.860 --> 00:05:50.879 and march with the ark as it ascends the hill 00:05:50.879 --> 00:05:52.960 and comes into the gates of Jerusalem 00:05:52.960 --> 00:05:54.960 and then goes into the tabernacle, 00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:57.160 and then it was carried on by those priests 00:05:57.160 --> 00:06:00.420 after the ceremonial law can carry it into the Holy of Holies. 00:06:00.740 --> 00:06:03.900 Certainly would require a special psalm for such a great day 00:06:03.900 --> 00:06:05.699 if they're in the area, and they're trading. 00:07:23.319 --> 00:07:25.100 They're hearing this proclaimed to them as well. 00:07:25.500 --> 00:07:27.060 Look at verse 1 of Psalm 24. 00:07:28.360 --> 00:07:29.500 Here's what the congregation sings. 00:07:29.500 --> 00:07:33.220 The earth is the Lord's in all its fullness, 00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:36.740 the world and those who dwell therein. 00:07:38.459 --> 00:07:40.720 Well, what gives this God of Israel such a claim? 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:41.600 Why is that? 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:42.459 Verse 2. 00:07:43.019 --> 00:07:45.800 For he has founded it upon the seas 00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:49.060 and established it upon the waters. 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:53.199 This is God's domain. 00:07:54.339 --> 00:07:57.399 All the earth is ruled 00:08:13.180 Verse 9 of Genesis 1 says, 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:14.040 Then God said, 00:08:14.579 --> 00:08:16.060 Let the waters under the heavens 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:18.579 be gathered together into one place 00:08:18.579 --> 00:08:20.740 and let the dry land appear. 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:22.519 And so it was. 00:08:23.540 --> 00:08:26.560 The Lord established the earth. 00:08:26.900 --> 00:08:51.879 --> 00:08:55.059 And it's the Lord who brings order and life 00:08:55.059 --> 00:08:57.759 and causes his creatures to flourish. 00:08:58.919 --> 00:09:02.319 So here David describes God's continued control 00:09:02.319 --> 00:09:05.559 as creator and sustainer of life 00:09:05.559 --> 00:09:08.319 on this blue planet over the waters. 00:09:10.539 --> 00:09:13.039 And so there we have that first movement 00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:15.579 that scene in verses 1 and 2, 00:09:15.579 --> 00:09:18.740 declaring that God rules over all the earth 00:09:18.740 --> 00:09:19.519 from heaven. 00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:22.019 He is the king enthroned above, 00:09:22.139 --> 00:09:24.099 and the earth is his footstool. 00:09:24.599 --> 00:09:26.939 God's rule extends over all people, were built by the Jebusites. 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:54.879 And then when the Lord gave that city over 00:09:54.879 --> 00:09:56.060 to the Israelites, 00:09:56.279 --> 00:09:57.340 David fortified them 00:09:57.340 --> 00:09:58.879 and made that the capital. 00:09:59.879 --> 00:10:00.899 What do gates do? 00:10:01.040 --> 00:10:03.440 Think about gates to one of these ancient cities. 00:10:05.800 --> 00:10:08.879 Gates protect the citizens from every harm. 00:10:09.879 --> 00:10:11.019 They keep evil out, 00:10:11.560 --> 00:10:14.420 and they keep the citizens safely inside. 00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:17.460 Gates are used to keep out those 00:10:17.460 --> 00:10:19.000 who do not belong to the kingdom. 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:22.700 The gates are closed to the enemies of God. 00:10:25.320 --> 00:10:27.580 These gates of Jerusalem 00:10:27.580 --> 00:10:29.679 had withstood many attacks. 00:10:30.519 --> 00:10:32.960 You picture those scenes of an ancient battle 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:33.840 and the rams, you know, 00:10:33.879 --> 00:10:35.779 trying to burst through these ancient gates 00:10:35.779 --> 00:10:38.200 to break in so the enemies could spill over 00:10:38.200 --> 00:10:39.600 and take over the city. 00:10:40.879 --> 00:10:43.879 Their hinges were likely loosened 00:10:43.879 --> 00:10:46.059 from the barrages they'd withstood. 00:10:46.059 --> 00:10:49.359 He speaks of them as being, 00:10:49.939 --> 00:10:51.459 needing to be lifted up. 00:10:52.199 --> 00:10:54.000 We had this old fence, you know, 00:10:54.059 --> 00:10:54.719 around the house, 00:10:54.819 --> 00:10:56.739 and the gates are just scraping on the cement 00:10:56.739 --> 00:10:58.000 and squeaky. 00:10:58.359 --> 00:10:58.959 They're tired.
