a passage in Matthew chapter 2 verses 13 00:01:53.520 --> 00:01:59.480 through 23 in which we're gonna look back Matthew's gonna help us look back at 00:01:59.480 --> 00:02:05.939 some Old Testament passages and we're gonna see how they point to Jesus they're 00:02:05.939 --> 00:02:12.479 gonna show us how they foreshadowed this Jesus the Christ our King and what you're 00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:17.939 gonna see is Jesus is the great fulfiller he's the great fulfiller of so many Old 00:02:17.939 --> 00:02:26.819 Testament passages and where we're gonna land this plane is not only is Jesus the 00:02:26.819 --> 00:02:32.960 great fulfiller of the Old Testament but he's the great fulfiller of your deepest 00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:42.200 longing he came for you if you look at Matthew chapter 2 verses 13 what I want to 00:02:42.200 --> 00:02:46.460 point you to right out of the gate is the word fulfill it's used three times in this 00:02:46.460 --> 00:02:53.300 passage if you notice in verse 15 and they remain there until the death of Herod 00:02:53.300 --> 00:02:58.640 this was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet out of Egypt I called my 00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:05.759 son so note that the word fulfill there and then in verse 17 then was fulfilled 00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:11.099 what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah and then if you look at verse 23 and then 00:03:11.099 --> 00:03:15.459 and he went and lived in a city called Nazareth that what was spoken by the 00:03:15.459 --> 00:03:22.799 prophets might be fulfilled he shall be called a Nazarene and so in this passage we 00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:29.700 have three fulfillments pointing to Jesus I want to show you how now this isn't the 00:03:29.700 --> 00:03:32.740 first time the word fulfilled was used in Matthew Matthew's already used it a 00:03:32.740 --> 00:03:38.280 couple times if you look back in Matthew chapter 1 we see it in verse 22 where 00:03:38.280 --> 00:03:43.380 Matthew is talking about the the miraculous conception and in Mary and the 00:03:43.380 --> 00:03:49.500 birth of this son whose name is Emmanuel and he's saying that fulfilled Isaiah 7 14 and 00:03:49.500 --> 00:03:57.319 then we look down at chapter 2 verse 6 verse 5 actually they told him in Bethlehem of 00:03:57.319 --> 00:04:03.039 Judea for so it is written fulfilled by the prophet and he points to Micah 5 2 the 00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:08.180 Messiah is going to come from Bethlehem fulfillment in these two 00:04:08.180 --> 00:04:15.539 fulfillments it's very clear that they're talking about the Messiah and so what we see 00:04:15.539 --> 00:04:22.360 early on in Matthew is this kind of God spoke a prophecy about the Messiah and it 00:04:22.360 --> 00:04:31.259 very specifically came true in Isaiah 7 14 and Micah 5 2 when we turn to chapter 2 00:04:31.259 --> 00:04:39.439 verses 13 through 23 it's not that clear of a fulfillment it's a different kind of 00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:45.000 fulfillment that's happening of the Old Testament instead of saying God saying 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:51.579 something specific and specifically pointing to the Messiah in these three 00:04:51.579 --> 00:04:56.759 little fulfillments Matthew is saying that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament 00:04:56.759 --> 00:05:03.300 scripture in a different kind of way a more general way it's like the Old Testament 00:05:03.300 --> 00:05:08.579 sets kind of a trajectory it's a foreshadowing that only looking back through 00:05:08.579 --> 00:05:14.759 Christ do we see the fulfillment of it this is classically known as typology 00:05:14.759 --> 00:05:20.339 we're not going to quizzy on that don't worry about it but typology is a 00:05:20.339 --> 00:05:25.519 legitimate way of understanding fulfillment of the Old Testament in the New Testament 00:05:25.519 --> 00:05:33.339 and so just a little bit more on that when we see New Testament writers using 00:05:33.339 --> 00:05:39.399 scripture this way what they do is they're showing how Jesus fulfills kind of 00:05:39.399 --> 00:05:44.779 general themes general ideas in the Old Testament a classic example would be this 00:05:44.779 --> 00:05:51.620 remember the sacrificial system in the Old Testament the ongoing killing of animals in 00:05:51.620 --> 00:05:59.479 order to cover over sin well that is a type of sacrifice and it's a foreshadowing of something 00:05:59.479 --> 00:06:09.079 that will be fulfilled in Christ's one time sacrifice for all that's the point of Hebrews 10 and so we see 00:06:09.079 --> 00:06:16.300 this kind of fulfillment being used by New Testament writers and it's fulfillment of particular people 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:23.839 institutions themes and so when we get to Matthew chapter 2 I want to help you to understand there's a 00:06:23.839 --> 00:06:29.299 different kind of fulfillment of Old Testament going on here typically not what we usually think of 00:06:29.299 --> 00:06:36.139 fulfillment of prophecy it's a little broader than that and so I just thought we could just jump right in 00:06:36.139 --> 00:06:41.860 this morning and we'll look at these three fulfilleds you ready let's go 00:06:41.860 --> 00:06:54.620 fulfilled number one we see this in verse 13 through 15 now when they the magi had departed behold an angel 00:06:54.620 --> 00:07:00.740 of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said rise take the child Jesus and his mother Mary and flee to 00:07:00.740 --> 00:07:08.540 Egypt and remain there until I tell you for Herod remember he is a Simonizing politically savvy killer 00:07:08.540 --> 00:07:17.079 for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him and Joseph rose it was immediate he is 00:07:17.079 --> 00:07:23.139 quite the man he arose and took child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until 00:07:23.139 --> 00:07:29.879 the death of Herod this was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet out of Egypt I called 00:07:29.879 --> 00:07:40.159 my son now what's being quoted there is Hosea chapter 11 verse 1 out of Egypt I called my son in what 00:07:40.159 --> 00:07:50.719 the Hosea is talking about out of Egypt he's referencing the Exodus remember Pharaoh let my people go Moses 00:07:50.720 --> 00:08:00.720 Exodus Exodus and so what it is is a deliverance from the captivity in Egypt that's what's the backdrop 00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:09.420 there that's what's being talked about what I want you to dial in on is those words my son out of Egypt 00:08:09.420 --> 00:08:17.460 I called my son and there's two points I want to make here first one is this this is the first time 00:08:17.459 --> 00:08:27.259 in Matthew that this phrase my son is being used by God to speak about Jesus and so this is the first time 00:08:27.259 --> 00:08:36.779 we Matthew uses a prophet to communicate that that God is saying this is my boy this is my son conceived of 00:08:36.779 --> 00:08:43.460 the Holy Spirit and so Jesus this boy fully God fully man in one person 00:08:43.460 --> 00:08:55.080 here's the second thing I want you to see out of Egypt I called my son it's a reference to the people of God 00:08:55.080 --> 00:09:07.480 my son the Israelites it's a reference to a body of people and so my son is being used in Hosea 11 1 as a 00:09:07.480 --> 00:09:15.940 reference to God's people that he's delivering out of captivity from Egypt and the question becomes well how does 00:09:15.940 --> 00:09:29.379 Jesus fulfill that well he is the new my son he is the embodiment of God's new people God's new people the 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:37.060 church all who bow the knee to Jesus become Christians they are located in the son 00:09:37.059 --> 00:09:43.439 my son my son he's the embodiment of a people delivered not from the captivity of Egypt 00:09:43.439 --> 00:09:46.439 but from the captivity of sin 00:09:46.439 --> 00:09:48.179 remember 00:09:48.179 --> 00:09:50.259 Matthew 1 21 Hosea 11 chapter chapter 11 verse 1 it's 00:10:27.639 --> 00:10:31.080 it's this foreshadowing fulfilled in Jesus 00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:35.279 the second fulfillment I want you to see 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:41.559 is chapter or chapter 2 verses 16 through 18 this is a really interesting passage 00:10:41.559 --> 00:10:51.199 and I I'm telling you I had a lean heart this past week on people far wiser than me and helping understand this 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:57.680 it says then Herod when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men the magi became furious 00:10:57.680 --> 00:10:59.379 remember he was paranoid 00:10:59.379 --> 00:11:07.379 and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem in all that region who were two years old and under according to the time that 00:11:07.379 --> 00:11:11.680 he had ascertained from all the wise men and that was based upon when the star raised from 00:11:11.679 --> 00:11:13.079 we talked about that last week 00:11:13.079 --> 00:11:18.799 and then verse 17 he says then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:25.039 a voice was heard in Ramah weeping in loud lamentation Rachel weeping for her children she refused to be comforted 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:26.739 because they are 00:11:26.739 --> 00:11:27.699 no 00:11:27.699 --> 00:11:28.799 more 00:11:28.799 --> 00:11:31.959 verse 18 00:11:31.959 --> 00:11:38.919 what's being quoted from Jeremiah is Jeremiah chapter 31 that may ring a bell we'll come back to it chapter 00:11:38.919 --> 00:11:41.459 Jeremiah 31 verse 15 on here is fulfillment of God's plan right 00:12:20.659 --> 00:12:24.159 but look who he blames 00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:27.439 verse 16 then Herod 00:12:27.439 --> 00:12:34.819 when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men became furious and he Herod sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem 00:12:34.820 --> 00:12:44.100 Matthew is very clear to be putting the blame on Herod not God for the slaughter of these baby boys 00:12:44.100 --> 00:12:46.100 I just want to make sure you see that distinction 00:12:46.100 --> 00:12:55.220 but what Matthew is saying is that this this weeping this deep sorrow going on 00:12:55.220 --> 00:12:58.019 this is fulfillment of something 00:12:58.019 --> 00:13:00.220 this is God 00:13:00.220 --> 00:13:01.899 God brought this in a way 00:13:01.899 00:13:57.080 --> 00:14:00.299 and God's people are now being deported 00:14:00.299 --> 00:14:03.779 and Ramah was a staging point 00:14:03.779 --> 00:14:06.840 for the deportation of God's people to the nations 00:14:06.840 --> 00:14:07.480 to Babylon 00:14:07.480 --> 00:14:11.320 and so what we see going on here in Jeremiah 00:14:11.320 --> 00:14:13.820 in this section is not the exodus 00:14:13.820 --> 00:14:16.500 being called out of Egypt 00:14:16.500 --> 00:14:18.259 it's the exile 00:14:18.259 --> 00:14:21.100 and so why 00:14:21.100 --> 00:14:22.440 Rachel 00:14:22.440 --> 00:14:25.740 as a representative is weeping so much 00:14:25.740 --> 00:14:26.820 is because 00:14:26.820 --> 00:14:30.500 it looks like her people are seemingly no more 00:14:30.500 --> 00:14:32.840 and more significantly 00:14:32.840 --> 00:14:33.179 and more significantly 00:14:33.179 --> 00:14:34.259 perhaps 00:14:34.259 --> 00:14:35.240 is that 00:14:35.240 --> 00:14:37.100 it looks like
