00:01:54.380 As we look at the psalm, we're going to look at it as a dichotomy in the sense of being an either-or option. 00:01:54.780 --> 00:01:58.240 The psalm prevents for us an either-or option. 00:01:59.260 --> 00:02:01.620 No middle third option. 00:02:01.620 --> 00:02:14.219 So the two groups that are presented here in the psalm are the opposers of God and the people of God. 00:02:14.980 --> 00:02:25.060 So the opposers of God are described there with this foolish attribute that comes through in verse 1. 00:02:25.060 --> 00:02:32.199 They're described as a fool because they say in their heart, there is no God. 00:02:32.640 --> 00:02:36.219 This is a description that overwhelms who they are. 00:02:36.800 --> 00:02:40.759 This belief, this lack of belief in God, this lack of reverence for God. 00:02:41.240 --> 00:02:46.259 And these opposers of God in verse 1 are also said that there is none who does good. 00:02:46.259 --> 00:03:00.000 And in verse 3, it goes on to explain that as God inspects them, God finds there is none who does good, not even one. 00:03:01.939 --> 00:03:11.280 One of the things we see with the opposers of God in this psalm is that there's no mitigation in God's description. 00:03:11.879 --> 00:03:14.539 These people are without virtue. 00:03:14.539 --> 00:03:18.979 They are people who stand in complete opposition to God. 00:03:20.099 --> 00:03:32.340 And as we come and look at these people, we are left with the realization that even their seemingly good actions are going to be corrupted by self-interest. 00:03:33.340 --> 00:03:42.919 So I think as we look out upon people who are not part of the people of God, people who oppose God, people who say there is no God in their heart, 00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:49.179 we want to come and say it's maybe not that bad or there's still some good in them. 00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:53.719 There's still something righteous in them that's inclined towards God. 00:03:54.099 --> 00:03:57.219 We don't want to see them as completely opposing God. 00:03:57.659 --> 00:04:00.139 But this is how the psalm describes such people. 00:04:00.359 --> 00:04:05.500 These ones, the fool who would say there is no God, they are completely without good. 00:04:05.500 --> 00:04:07.719 They are not even one that's found. 00:04:08.500 --> 00:04:18.500 And so as we come and think, how do we understand these seemingly good acts that people who are not following God are doing? 00:04:18.980 --> 00:04:29.480 As we come and evaluate those, one of the things we can find is that these good acts can be an attractive disguise for a corrupted heart. 00:04:29.480 --> 00:04:35.160 So it looks good on the outside, but the motivations within are not God-honored. 00:04:35.720 --> 00:04:51.980 In fact, the motivations are self-honoring, which speaks to really the fundamental nature, the fundamental problem that humans have is this nature, this inclination towards self-honoring choices rather than decisions that are God-honoring. 00:04:51.980 --> 00:05:07.600 I think an illustration that might be helpful as we think of a con artist who comes and with much kindness and concern and apparent love approaches someone in an effort to build up their confidence. 00:05:08.960 --> 00:05:20.040 And then as it comes to find out that the con artist has really done all these good things in an effort to perform sort of a trick or deception upon the person. 00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:25.780 And so as we come and think about these opposers of God, what about the good things that they're doing? 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:30.280 And we come and ask, where's the heart? 00:05:30.780 --> 00:05:32.520 That's the question that we need to ask. 00:05:32.760 --> 00:05:35.939 It's not what are they doing, but where is the heart? terror, with great fear that God will put upon these people. 00:06:23.959 --> 00:06:27.500 I said we were looking at two opposite things today. 00:06:27.560 --> 00:06:30.040 We had the opposers of God, but we also have the people of God. 00:06:30.160 --> 00:06:33.639 And so the second half of the psalm brings up the people of God. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:41.240 And as we come and think about the people of God, I think it's important to know that the people of God are not righteous either. 00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:46.939 And we've looked at the flaws of the opposers of God, but the people of God are just as flawed. 00:06:48.860 --> 00:06:57.480 Deuteronomy chapter 9 is a lengthy description of God's people and specifically how God's people are not righteous. 00:06:57.480 --> 00:07:01.620 Let me read part of that passage for you. 00:07:01.900 --> 00:07:07.700 Just so we can see that the people of God, even though they are the people of God, have no righteousness of their own. 00:07:07.879 --> 00:07:11.379 So it's in Deuteronomy chapter 9, verses 6 through 8. 00:07:11.379 --> 00:07:19.779 Know therefore that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness. 00:07:20.579 --> 00:07:23.199 For you are a stubborn people. 00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:29.120 Remember and do not forget how you provoke the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. 00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:37.060 From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 00:07:37.060 --> 00:07:45.839 Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. 00:07:47.160 --> 00:07:49.959 So we come and think of the people of God. 00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:58.959 That God has chosen them and preferred them, not based on their righteousness, but based on God's choice for them. 00:07:59.959 --> 00:08:05.579 We will find that the people of God, despite not being righteous, that God will defend his people. 00:08:05.579 --> 00:08:07.240 That God will defend them. 00:08:07.740 --> 00:08:11.979 And we see in verse 5 that God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you. 00:08:13.419 --> 00:08:21.139 And as we think of God defending his people, I think for us that's an important thing that we can use in our life. 00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:24.120 It's the recognition that God will defend us. 00:08:24.740 --> 00:08:28.479 So often we want to rely upon our own strength, our own power. 00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:34.879 When people oppose us, when people bring people of God is that God offers hope. 00:08:54.400 --> 00:09:03.620 And there in verse 6 we see the psalmist as the psalmist reflects upon the forthcoming goodness that God will provide. 00:09:04.180 --> 00:09:05.500 There in verse 6 the psalmist says, 00:09:05.860 --> 00:09:10.020 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion. 00:09:10.019 --> 00:09:14.779 So this idea of salvation for Israel. 00:09:15.419 --> 00:09:18.840 We come and we find that fulfilled in the work of Jesus. 00:09:19.159 --> 00:09:22.079 Because God's people, they're not righteous. 00:09:22.699 --> 00:09:23.879 They need God's help. 00:09:24.299 --> 00:09:27.720 And there is a salvation that the psalmist look forward to. 00:09:28.100 --> 00:09:32.259 It's a salvation that we can look and see that is fulfilled in the work of Jesus. 00:09:32.840 --> 00:09:36.439 As Jesus comes and lives a perfect life. 00:09:36.440 --> 00:09:40.620 Is able then to stand on behalf of these unrighteous people. salvation for which the psalmist look is ultimately fulfilled in the work of Jesus. 00:09:54.500 --> 00:09:58.300 And even as the psalmist had hope in the salvation that was to come. 00:09:59.080 -->
