first five verses is what we're going to study today. 00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:13.480 I just want to remind you of where we've been in the book of Romans. 00:01:14.439 --> 00:01:18.280 Starting out with the theme, chapter 1, verse 17, Paul says, 00:01:18.740 --> 00:01:24.240 For in it, being the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith. 00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:27.640 As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith. 00:01:27.700 --> 00:01:32.680 And he's been building a case in the first eight chapters that righteousness comes to us. 00:01:32.740 --> 00:01:37.520 A right standing with God comes to us by faith alone. 00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:41.099 There is nothing we can do to earn God's favor. 00:01:41.500 --> 00:01:44.840 It is given to us freely as a gift. 00:01:45.539 --> 00:01:46.299 And he works through. 00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:51.179 The believers here in Rome would have been both Gentile and Jewish believers. 00:01:51.399 --> 00:01:57.699 And so he 00:07:18.340 --> 00:07:19.840 Aren't they God's special people? 00:07:20.840 --> 00:07:24.740 And we see that many of them are not receiving Christ. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:28.699 Many of them are hardened and turning away. 00:07:29.639 --> 00:07:35.220 Many of them still are practicing the old Jewish rites. 00:07:35.220 --> 00:07:37.640 What about them? 00:07:39.060 --> 00:07:40.340 And he laments that. 00:07:41.140 --> 00:07:42.300 Verses 1 through 3. 00:07:43.200 --> 00:07:45.900 Paul is burdened by it. 00:07:46.340 --> 00:07:53.160 He has great sorrow and unceasing anguish on behalf of the Israelites. 00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:57.200 He says that he's speaking the truth in Christ. 00:07:57.460 --> 00:07:58.300 He's not lying. 00:07:58.380 --> 00:08:03.440 His conscience bears witness in the Holy Spirit that this is how he feels. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:07.719 And he knows that he can't give away his salvation. 00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:11.100 But that if he could, he's saying, You'll remember he comes down off the mountain, is so angered that he breaks the tablets. 00:09:23.100 --> 00:09:31.680 He then gets a group of men that go through the people, slaying people, setting that right. 00:09:31.680 --> 00:09:33.480 He goes back up on the mountain to meet with God. 00:09:33.740 --> 00:09:35.340 He goes back to God's presence. 00:09:35.820 --> 00:09:37.759 And he pleads for the people. 00:09:38.220 --> 00:09:39.860 In Exodus 32, 31, it says, 00:09:39.940 --> 00:09:41.440 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, 00:09:41.820 --> 00:09:45.320 Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. 00:09:45.620 --> 00:09:47.480 They have made for themselves gods of gold. 00:09:47.580 --> 00:09:49.600 But now, if you will forgive their sin. 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:53.899 But if --> 00:10:21.560 And you were not willing. 00:10:21.559 --> 00:10:26.819 So Paul properly cares for Israel. 00:10:27.619 --> 00:10:29.919 They were God's special people. 00:10:30.859 --> 00:10:33.179 And he goes on to tell us how it is that they were. 00:10:33.319 --> 00:10:40.699 We see in verses 4 and 5 that Israel was uniquely blessed with eight privileges. 00:10:41.699 --> 00:10:43.559 Uniquely blessed with eight privileges. 00:10:43.559 --> 00:10:49.079 These were all privileges ultimately designed to show them Christ. 00:10:50.439 --> 00:10:56.259 Paul is heartbroken because according to the flesh, by all human understanding, 00:10:56.739 --> 00:11:02.099 if any people should have understood who Jesus was, it should have been the Israelites. 00:11:02.759 --> 00:11:08.839 They had a picture constantly being painted before them of their great need of a savior. 00:11:08.839 --> 00:11:13.339 And he came and so many missed it. 00:11:14.539 --> 00:11:19.579 So from purely human understanding, they should have all followed Christ. 00:11:20.299 --> 00:11:21.439 And yet so few did. 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:26.479 And he's going to work that out in further degree in the --> 00:12:19.559 Even to your old age I am he, 00:12:19.799 --> 00:12:22.220 and to gray hairs I will carry you. 00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:23.919 I have made and I will bear. 00:12:24.139 --> 00:12:26.159 I will carry and will save. 00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:28.779 There's lots of language in the Old Testament, 00:12:29.139 --> 00:12:32.120 speaking of Israel being the children of God.
