--> 00:06:25.020 And it is my joy this morning to open up John chapter 9 to us. 00:06:25.700 --> 00:06:28.220 But let me just start with a little bit of an observation. 00:06:28.940 --> 00:06:35.100 I'm sure some of us have really enjoyed the good weather that we've been having during this time of lockdown, 00:06:35.100 --> 00:06:38.220 particularly in the months of April and May. 00:06:38.740 --> 00:06:42.740 The sun has been shining, the shorts and the t-shirt have been on, 00:06:43.320 --> 00:06:48.920 and maybe you even enjoyed a walk in the park, or you enjoyed soaking up the sun in the garden. 00:06:49.860 --> 00:06:57.020 But my wife Sabina and I have found something quite interesting about the sun during this lockdown period. 00:06:57.019 --> 00:07:04.859 So during our normal Scottish weather of overcast clouds and grey-tinted skies, 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:11.279 we can look out our windows and see clearly the wind blowing the trees to and fro. 00:07:11.579 --> 00:07:15.719 We can look down and see our neighbours running to get out of the rain. 00:07:17.219 --> 00:07:19.819 But during the sunny days of lockdown, 00:07:20.500 --> 00:07:25.879 we've realised that our windows aren't actually as clean as we thought they were. 00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:31.439 The sun has revealed that our windows are full of dirt and dust. 00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:36.759 Now without the light revealing this dirt, we would be none the wiser. 00:07:38.360 --> 00:07:43.680 But when the light shines on the windows, it reveals the extent of dirt that's there. 00:07:44.699 --> 00:07:46.459 The sun reveals things. 00:07:47.159 --> 00:07:50.279 But at the same time, the sun can be blinding. 00:07:50.279 --> 00:07:56.319 For example, you can be driving down the motorway, going 70 miles per hour, 00:07:56.459 --> 00:08:02.759 and suddenly that one cloud moves out the way, shooting that sunbeam directly at your eyes. 00:08:03.479 --> 00:08:08.819 And it takes you a second to pull down the sun flap or put on your sunglasses. 00:08:10.279 --> 00:08:14.659 The sun can both reveal and it can blind. 00:08:14.660 --> 00:08:16.900 Now we all know this. 00:08:16.980 --> 00:08:19.220 It's not any rocket science. 00:08:19.780 --> 00:08:24.820 But it's very relevant for the passage that we're looking at this morning in John chapter 9. 00:08:25.620 --> 00:08:34.480 Because in this passage, Jesus is reiterating the truth about himself that he mentioned in John 8 verse 12. 00:08:34.840 --> 00:08:36.080 Where Jesus said this, 00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:50.080 And Jesus says the same thing in our passage for this morning in verse 5. 00:08:50.720 --> 00:08:53.160 I am the light of the world. 00:08:54.520 --> 00:08:58.580 This seems like a small detail in quite a long passage. 00:08:59.220 --> 00:09:01.600 So why am I drawing attention to it now? 00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:11.279 Well, because the identity of Jesus as the light of the world is fundamental to our understanding of this passage. 00:09:12.100 --> 00:09:15.600 This chapter tells us when the light shines, 00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:19.580 some people are made to see, 00:09:20.600 --> 00:09:22.600 whilst others are blinded. 00:09:23.040 --> 00:09:24.220 The light is the same, 00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:26.920 but the reactions to it, 00:09:27.180 --> 00:09:30.259 the effects of that light are very different. 00:09:30.259 --> 00:09:34.439 Just as the sun can both reveal and blind, 00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:37.080 so too does Jesus, 00:09:37.179 --> 00:09:38.259 the light of the world, 00:09:39.399 --> 00:09:41.179 when shone into the darkness, 00:09:42.379 --> 00:09:44.439 reveal the truth to some 00:09:44.439 --> 00:09:46.519 and blind others. 00:09:47.899 --> 00:09:51.559 Jesus says that himself in John chapter 9 verse 39. 00:09:52.019 --> 00:09:54.259 For judgment I have come into this world, 00:09:54.860 --> 00:09:56.679 so that the blind will see, 00:09:56.679 --> 00:10:00.659 and those who see will become blind. 00:10:02.099 --> 00:10:04.819 So we're going to see in this passage 00:10:04.819 --> 00:10:06.879 how the blind receive sight, 00:10:07.199 --> 00:10:09.599 and how the seeing are made blind. 00:10:10.439 --> 00:10:13.339 We're going to be jumping in and out of the passage this morning, 00:10:13.419 --> 00:10:15.939 so it would be great if you have your Bible open in front of you 00:10:15.939 --> 00:10:17.179 to follow along. 00:10:18.179 --> 00:10:20.359 So the first thing we see in this passage 00:10:20.359 --> 00:10:22.719 is the blind receive sight. 00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:25.399 The blind receive sight. 00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:27.660 In verse 1, 00:10:27.740 --> 00:10:29.759 we see that Jesus is walking along, 00:10:30.080 --> 00:10:33.019 and he sees a man who's been blind from birth. 00:10:34.180 --> 00:10:36.500 And Jesus' disciples ask in verse 2, 00:10:36.899 --> 00:10:38.440 Rabbi, who sinned? 00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:39.860 This man? 00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:42.320 Or his parents that he was born blind? 00:10:43.920 --> 00:10:45.639 The disciples assume, 00:10:46.060 --> 00:10:48.379 like many people did at that time, 00:10:48.740 --> 00:10:50.899 that sin and suffering are connected. 00:10:50.899 --> 00:10:55.079 And that is a right assumption to make to an extent. 00:10:55.819 --> 00:10:58.019 The Bible says that our bodies, 00:10:58.360 --> 00:10:59.019 our world, 00:10:59.079 --> 00:11:01.199 and everything in it has been stained, 00:11:01.579 --> 00:11:03.259 and broken by sin. 00:11:04.139 --> 00:11:05.600 So in general terms, 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:07.139 sin and suffering are connected. 00:11:08.519 --> 00:11:11.319 But when we move from the general principle 00:11:11.319 --> 00:11:15.019 of suffering and sin, 00:11:16.220 --> 00:11:18.220 and apply that same truth 00:11:18.220 --> 00:11:19.680 to individuals, 00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:22.060 and to very specific 00:11:22.060 --> 00:11:24.340 and bad situations, 00:11:24.860 --> 00:11:27.940 and say that they result from a specific sin, 00:11:28.100 --> 00:11:30.180 we're going beyond what the Bible teaches. 00:11:31.820 --> 00:11:32.980 In many cases, 00:11:32.980 --> 00:11:34.960 we don't know why we suffer. 00:11:35.800 --> 00:11:36.920 And God's intention 00:11:36.920 --> 00:11:38.800 is hidden from us. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:40.879 But we cannot, 00:11:41.579 --> 00:11:42.639 and we should not, 00:11:43.359 --> 00:11:46.979 conclude that every suffering 00:11:46.979 --> 00:11:50.939 is a result of a specific sin. 00:11:51.639 --> 00:11:53.979 That is a dangerous road to take. 00:11:54.699 --> 00:11:56.199 And it can hurt many people. 00:11:56.359 --> 00:11:58.519 And it is simply not what the Bible says. 00:11:58.519 --> 00:12:01.659 In most cases, 00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:05.120 suffering is not the result of a specific sin. 00:12:05.259 --> 00:12:07.539 Sometimes we might not even know 00:12:07.539 --> 00:12:09.240 the reason for our sufferings. 00:12:10.740 --> 00:12:12.779 There is no point on us speculating. 00:12:14.539 --> 00:12:16.639 That's true in the case of this blind man. 00:12:17.259 --> 00:12:19.679 His blindness was not a result of sin. 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:22.240 But Jesus tells us the purpose 00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:24.539 behind this man's blindness in verse 3. 00:12:25.500 --> 00:12:26.199 Jesus says, 00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:29.340 Neither this man nor his parents sinned, 00:12:29.379 --> 00:12:31.320 but this happened so that 00:12:31.320 --> 00:12:34.460 the works of God might be displayed in him. 00:12:35.980 --> 00:12:38.100 The purpose of this man's blindness 00:12:38.100 --> 00:12:41.040 was so that the works of God 00:12:41.040 --> 00:12:42.920 may be seen and revealed. 00:12:44.640 --> 00:12:46.520 That's what Jesus has come to do. 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.280 To reveal the works of God. 00:12:49.340 --> 00:12:51.660 That is what he says in verses 4 and 5. 00:12:52.580 --> 00:12:54.400 Jesus has come into the world, 00:12:54.399 --> 00:12:57.079 and whilst he is still with them, 00:12:57.179 --> 00:12:58.039 with his disciples, 00:12:58.519 --> 00:13:02.319 this light must be shown to the entire world. 00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:07.179 Jesus sees this man who is physically blind, 00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:10.720 and through an amazing miracle in verse 6, 00:13:11.179 --> 00:13:13.259 he puts mud and spit on his eyes, 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:15.799 sends him to a pool to wash, 00:13:16.199 --> 00:13:17.579 and he is healed. 00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:20.639 What a wonderful miracle. 00:13:20.639 --> 00:13:23.799 This blind man can suddenly see 00:13:23.799 --> 00:13:25.639 for the first time in his life. 00:13:27.379 --> 00:13:31.220 His whole life has been completely changed. 00:13:31.580 --> 00:13:32.319 He was a beggar. 00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:35.399 He had no possibility to work. 00:13:36.100 --> 00:13:37.919 Bound to a life on the street, 00:13:38.039 --> 00:13:39.039 asking for money, 00:13:39.159 --> 00:13:41.159 depending on other people. 00:13:42.860 --> 00:13:44.539 No hope of getting better 00:13:44.539 --> 00:13:47.240 until Jesus comes 00:13:47.240 --> 00:13:50.360 and turns his life upside down. 00:13:51.560 --> 00:13:53.740 Imagine for a second that walk home. 00:13:54.560 --> 00:13:55.960 Imagine his joy, 00:13:56.740 --> 00:13:59.060 being able to see for the very first time. 00:13:59.600 --> 00:14:01.379 He can look up and see the sun, 00:14:01.460 --> 00:14:03.980 which up until now has only warmed his face. 00:14:04.720 --> 00:14:06.779 He can see the birds flying, 00:14:06.919 --> 00:14:08.820 the trees swaying in the breeze. 00:14:08.919 --> 00:14:11.659 He can see his parents' face 00:14:11.659 --> 00:14:13.500 for the first time. 00:14:13.500 --> 00:14:19.159 Suddenly, the world takes on a whole new light 00:14:19.159 --> 00:14:21.519 because his eyes have been opened 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:23.080 and he can see. 00:14:24.179 --> 00:14:27.340 He would have been skipping home with joy. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:30.879 So that's the physical side of it. 00:14:31.899 --> 00:14:35.059 But there is also a spiritual revealing of sight 00:14:35.059 --> 00:14:36.360 that happens to this man. 00:14:37.200 --> 00:14:39.120 As we journey through the passage, 00:14:39.279 --> 00:14:42.940 he understands more and more of who Jesus is. 00:14:43.500 --> 00:14:45.820 And then we see another miracle. 00:14:47.080 --> 00:14:49.360 Not only has this man received his sight, 00:14:49.779 --> 00:14:51.639 but at the very end of the passage, 00:14:51.799 --> 00:14:52.820 in verse 38, 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:55.879 we see that he receives spiritual sight. 00:14:56.820 --> 00:14:59.700 The identity of Jesus is revealed to him 00:14:59.700 --> 00:15:01.799 and he worships. 00:15:03.480 --> 00:15:06.860 Well, this isn't a light bulb, isolated moment 00:15:06.860 --> 00:15:08.740 where he suddenly sees Jesus 00:15:08.740 --> 00:15:10.500 and falls on his face in adoration. 00:15:10.500 --> 00:15:15.279 He comes to the conclusion of who Jesus is 00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:18.259 by miraculously receiving his sight 00:15:18.259 --> 00:15:21.779 and by coming up against severe opposition. 00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:24.860 So in verse 7, 00:15:24.940 --> 00:15:27.200 the man washes at the well and is healed. 00:15:27.899 --> 00:15:29.100 He goes home 00:15:29.100 --> 00:15:31.360 and his neighbors are confused 00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:34.440 because they've only ever known him 00:15:34.440 --> 00:15:35.519 as the blind man. 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:38.220 And so they ask in verse 10, 00:15:38.539 --> 00:15:40.179 how then were your eyes opened? 00:15:42.519 --> says that Jesus is a prophet, 00:16:21.220 --> 00:16:22.620 a spokesperson 00:16:22.620 --> 00:16:25.320 sent from God 00:16:25.320 --> 00:16:26.680 to deliver his message 00:16:26.680 --> 00:16:28.520 and to do his works. 00:16:29.960 --> 00:16:30.280 And then, 00:16:30.580 --> 00:16:31.860 in verse 33, 00:16:32.060 --> 00:16:34.640 he says that Jesus is from God. 00:16:36.440 -->
